Abstract:In recent years, government investments in implementing restrictive public policies on the treatment and discharge of effluents from the aquaculture industry have increased. Hence, efficient and cleaner methods for aquaculture production are needed. Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) offers water conservation by recycling the treated aquaculture water for reuse. RAS wastewater treatment using a moving bed bioreactors (MBBRs) process has been considered well suited for maintaining good water quality, thereby making fish farming more sustainable. Currently, improvements were achieved in tackling the influence of salinity, organic matter, disinfectant, and bioreactor start-up process on the MBBR performance efficiency. This review highlights an updated overview of recent development made using MBBR to treat the residual water from RAS. Precisely, nitrification and simultaneous nitrification-denitrification (SND), and other hybrid processes for nitrogen removal were elucidated. Finally, future challenges and prospects of MBBRs in RAS facilities that need to be considered were also proposed.

Abstract:Abstract Recirculating aquaculture systems ( RAS s) are intensive aquaculture facilities models that depend on diverse water treatment equipment to maintain good water quality and produce safe and healthy high‐quality aquatic products. This article combines the main farming‐mode of water purification recirculating processes with recent cultivation‐mode scientific research and the current development of the recirculating aquaculture industry. Harmful substances are present in aquaculture wastewater due to large quantities of residual particulate matter such as residual feed, faeces and small suspended solid particles, as well as ammonia, nitrite, bacteria and carbon dioxide ( CO 2 ), in the water. These harmful substances seriously affect the quality of aquatic products, so water treatment equipment is needed to remove these substances, add oxygen (O 2 ) to the water and adjust the temperature of the water to ensure a high‐quality environment for fish survival. This article reviews the equipment for physical filtration (e.g. solid–liquid separation equipment, microscreen drum filter and foam fractionator) that could remove suspended solids during the water treatment of RAS s and the equipment for biological filtration (e.g. fluidized sand biofilter ( FSB ), moving‐bed biofilm reactor ( MBBR ) and rotating biological contactor ( RBC )) that could remove ammonia nitrogen, nitrite and other hazardous substances from wastewater, as well as equipment for water disinfection and sterilization, O 2 addition, CO 2 removal and temperature control. Comprehensive analysis and discussion of water treatment efficiency are provided for reference to create efficient high‐end recirculation aquaculture models and increase the precision and intelligence degree of recirculating water treatment technologies in the future.

Abstract:The generation of solids by aquaculture activities has led to many problems in animal welfare, environmental quality, water treatment effects and public health, such as gill and intestinal damage, water eutrophication, system components blockages and antibiotics transfers through the food chain to human; thus, effective solid wastes management is very important. The purpose of this review is to summarize the sources, characterization methods, harmfulness, removal technologies and reutilization of solids in aquaculture water, including (i) different sources of solids, such as uneaten feed, feces and debris; (ii) solids characterization based on the general parameters, particle size distribution and chemical composition; (iii) the toxicity and detriment of solids to cultured species, the environment, aquaculture system components and human health; (iv) Solids removal, effluents solids thickening and source control techniques for better solids management; and (v) various methods for the reutilization of aquacultural solid wastes for resource value‐adding. In addition to these five specific objectives, the merits and drawbacks of each method or technology and future research priorities are discussed. The present review provides an understanding of the role played by solids in aquaculture water and provides guidance for aquacultural solid wastes precision management, aquaculture practices and technological developments. Thus, solids management can be carried out based on this guidance to improve animal welfare and the stability of water treatment systems, reduce harm to the environment and public health, and enable the development of aquaculture in a sustainable way.
Performance evaluation of an intensive pond aquaculture system for commercial freshwater fish production

Abstract:The aquaculture wastewater in China has been faced with ever-more strict limitations on its discharges during recent years, especially for the freshwater pond aquaculture industry, and the same trend will continue in the future. Under this circumstance, intensive pond aquaculture (IPA) which is considered as an upgrade mode of the traditional pond aquaculture has been developing rapidly in China since 2013, but few literatures indicate its applicability. In this study, an improvement of IPA called intensive pond aquaculture system (IPAS) was made to investigate the benefits and water quality of the system, experiments on some commercial fishes cultivated in a modified earthen pond were conducted in a fish farm. The system mainly consists of raceways, recirculating water purification area, waste collection area, some equipments, sedimentation basins and purification pond. The results showed that the values of water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and nitrite nitrogen (NO2--N) were within the reference range. During the whole production season, the costs (119,534.35$/ha) were mainly made up of pond rent, fingerlings, feed, electricityÂ charge and wages, and the average profit obtained was 42,657.69 $/ha. Based on the study, IPAS has the advantages of environment-friendly, high efficiency compared with the traditional pond aquaculture. Future research should focus on the optimization of waste collection modes and the reduction of initial investment and production costs.
Assessment of Water Quality and Fish Production in an Intensive Pond Aquaculture System

Abstract:Pond aquaculture plays a major role in world aquaculture production, especially in China. To make pond aquaculture more precise, ecologically sound, and efficient, in this study, an intensive pond aquaculture system (IPAS) was designed and built to produce freshwater fish that are commonly reared in China. Aquatic plants and filter-feeding, omnivorous fish were used to rehabilitate the aquaculture water quality, and the particle size distribution (PSD) model of suspended solids in the pond raceways was investigated. The results showed that the water quality in the purification pond was improved compared to that in the sedimentation basins, and it was close to the water quality in the raceways, which were within the acceptable range. The number distribution of suspended solids can be described by the power law model (R-2 = 0.901 +/- 0.032), which can provide guidance for solids removal using different methods. Moreover, during one production cycle, economic benefits of the IPAS were also evaluated; the return on investment (ROI) of 35.69% and benefit cost ratio (BCR) of 1.36 indicated that this kind of aquaculture mode has achieved a better profit. There are many fish species in China, so developing an IPAS with a wide application range requires further study in the future.
An integrated recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) for land-based fish farming: The effects on water quality and fish production

Abstract:To mitigate the serious water pollution caused by the rapid expansion of the aquaculture industry in recent years, the development of improved aquaculture systems with more efficient water usage and less environmental impact has become essential. In this study, a land-based recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) was established that consisted of purification units (i.e., a primary biological pond, two parallel horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands [CWs], and a long ecological ditch) and 4–5 series-connected recirculating ponds. This system was mainly designed to stock channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), fifteen spine stickleback (Spinibarbus sinensis) and yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco), and the culture efficacy was evaluated based on a 2-year field experiment covering two growing seasons. According to the results, the primary biological pond played a role in sedimentation or nutrient retention, although this was not as evident when the CWs were functioning. The water flowing through the wetland system at a hydraulic loading rate (HLR) of 600mm/day displayed lower values for the temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), suspended solids, organic matter and nutrients, whereas the electrical conductivity (EC) was higher, suggesting the accumulation of dissolved solids in the system. Due to the recirculation treatment, the trophic status of the recirculating ponds increased gradually along the direction of the flow and was notably lower in comparison to the control. As a result, the fish production responded to the variation of the water quality, which was reflected in the measurements of culture efficacy (final weight, survival rate, SGR and yield). The three main rearing species showed a decreasing trend along the direction of the flow, which was higher compared to the control, whereas an opposite trend was observed for filter-feeding fish. A Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the main culture species were inclined to live in meso- or oligotrophic conditions, and the silver carp adapted to more eutrophic conditions. Because RAS can provide better environmental conditions year-round, the present culture method could be more suitable for species that are sensitive to water quality in typical subtropical areas.

Abstract:Aquaculture or aquatic farming is an important source of food, nutrition, and livelihood globally. Conventional farming techniques are limited by low yields, are water intensive and cause nutrient pollution. Recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), wherein water is treated and reused (recirculated), provides up to 100 times higher yields and is well-known to be a sustainable farming technique. This paper discusses the merits and challenges of RAS and reviews the different processes applied for the treatment of water—including solids removal, ammonia removal and disinfection—in RAS. Since, ammonia generally assumes foremost concern in RAS, this work focuses on nitrification in RAS. Parameters affecting nitrification process and the different types of commonly used reactors have been reviewed.

Abstract:ABSTRACTBiofloc technology (BFT), initially adapted for shrimp farming in the 1970s, represents a sophisticated ecosystem of microorganisms designed to enhance aquaculture productivity and sustainability. Despite its established history, research into BFT is surprisingly still at an early stage globally. This review conducted a bibliometric analysis of 612 articles from major aquaculture journals spanning 2008–2023 to systematically explore the development, trends, and focal points of BFT research. The analysis revealed that the bulk of significant contributions originates from Brazil and China, and highlighting areas of interest can be categorized into four hotspots, such as (1) efficient nitrogen transformation, (2) biofloc microbiology, (3) biofloc's immunostimulant properties, and (4) the evaluation of research methodologies. At the end, the microecology concept was introduced, and the cross‐discipline methods were promoted in the aquaculture field. Notably, much of the BFT research is still at an exploratory phase, with numerous functional bacteria unidentified and optimization strategies for BFT underdeveloped. These gaps present opportunities for enhancing aquaculture through improvements in wastewater management, product quality, safety, and yield. Furthermore, the review notes a growing trend in applying microbiome research and microecological analysis in aquaculture, with high‐throughput sequencing data increasingly used to understand microbial interactions and nitrogen transformation within bioflocs. This direction promises to unlock further insights into the complex microbial ecosystems of bioflocs and their applications in sustainable aquaculture.
The Design and Experiment of Low-Cost Solar Collector Systemfor Recirculation Aquaculture

Abstract:The temperature control of recirculation aquaculture consumes a large amount of conventional energy. Therefore, using renewable energy, such as solar energy, for heating is the trend in recirculation aquaculture. However, the existing solar collector system in aquaculture hasÂ problems of high initial investment and slow cost recovery. This paper presents a low-cost solar collector system for supplying a hot water for an aquaculture system. The system consisted of solar collector, circulating piping systemï¼ pump, a solar power supply device and storage tank. A solar battery was adopted for power of the system, driving the pump to work. A double black plastic film acted as the heat collecting material. The system uses water flow between two layers of black film to absorb the heat generated by the solar radiation. And the heat was stored in the storage tank through the circulation water.Â The cost of the collector is about a quarter of the flat plate collector, significantly reduces the system cost. TheÂ experimentÂ resultsÂ indicatedÂ that the average daily collector efficiency of the system could reach 49.6%.
Solid Phase Distribution Simulation of Culture Pond with Recirculating Biofloc Technology Based on Computational Fluid Dynamics

Abstract:Biofloc technology (BFT) has been widely used in situ tilapia rearing for its benefits such as saving protein-feed and reducing the adverse impacts on environment. And biofloc concentration has huge effect on aquaculture system. More specifically, TSS(total suspend solid) and the uniformity of the biofloc distribution can greatly affect cultured animals on feeding enthusiasm, and high TSS even will threat the survival of breeding objects. In production, because of the biofloc sedimentation, the bottom of traditional BFT system usually extremely high, so the recirculating biofloc technology (RBFT) system has become a hot topic in recent study. To investigate the improvement on biofloc distribution uniformity of RBFT system compared with situ BFT system, an Euler-Euler multi-phase turbulence 3-D model combined with the kinetic theory of granular flow was applied to simulate the solid-liquid-gas three-phase flow in culture ponds of two kinds of BFT system. At first, the tank meshing was finished based on the commercial software Workbenching 15.0. The grid independent validation was done to choose the acceptable mesh. At last, the mesh was imported in numerical simulation software (Fluent) to analyze the velocity contours and streamlines of liquid phase, distribution characters of solid phase in these two models. In this simulation, pressure-based solver and second-order implicit transient formulation were adopted. The boundary conditions of water and air inlet were set as velocity, and their outlet were regard as pressure outlet equated to the local atmospheric pressure. What’s more, according to the SIM-PLE algorithm, pressure-velocity coupling was calculated. The bioflocs were regarded as to be distributed in the bottom initially. Unsteady simulations were performed when all residuals fall below 10-3, while 40 iterations per time step were used to ensure numerical stability. To have an accurate results, third-order monotone upstream-centered schemes for conservation laws (MUSCL) was used. The simulation results show that when the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of RBFT system is 0.45 h, its flow field has an irregularly varying flow directions namely spreading all over the space, and a severe turbulent flow is complex in contrast with BFT system. On one hand, this flow field results in a more homogeneous velocity distribution and less dead zone flow field in recirculating culture pond, and on the other hand, bioflocs are gathering at the main center area, which is beneficial to biofloc recirculating. What is particularly worth mentioning is that there is only a small amount of biofloc’s sedimentation at bottom in recirculating culture pond, and this result can efficiently avoid the anaerobic bacterium’s breeding caused by the biofloc sedimentation at bottom corners of culture ponds. In addition, the solid phase volume fraction is about 0.1 in recirculating culture pond’s model, and this concentration of suspended solid is suitable for growth of cultured aquatic animal like tilapia and shrimp. According to the comparison between simulation value and experimental data, the simulating value’s error is less than 20%, and the simulation results are trustworthy. In conclusion, the study shows that the RBFT system can overcome the disadvantages including uneven distribution of biofloc and too much dead zone in situ BFT system.
Exploring the mechanism of a novel recirculating aquaculture system based on water quality parameters and bacterial communities

Abstract:To mitigate the serious environmental problems caused by aquaculture wastewater discharge, the development of improved aquaculture systems with more self-purification capacity and less environmental impact has become essential. A novel recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) with ecological ponds was introduced. However, the mechanism of how the ecological ponds decompose the nutrients from the residual feed and excrement of fish is still unclear. Therefore, we designed a seven-week field experiment to explore the dynamic of water quality and the shift of bacterial communities during the initial stage of the RAS ecosystem to maintain the stability of the system. According to the result, the dissolved oxygen concentration maintained at 5.63 to 10.22 mg·L-1 in aquaculture water, and electrical conductivity increased by 100% to over 800 μs·cm-1. High-throughput sequencing showed that the abundance and diversity of the bacterial communities in sediment samples were significantly higher than in water samples, and the Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, and Actinobacteria were dominant phyla in all samples. The relative abundance of ammonia-oxidizing archaea, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria was lower than 0.10, but rising. Redundancy analysis suggested that TOC, EC, NO3-, and NO2- were the most important factors shaping the bacterial communities in aquaculture water. Our studies assessed the RAS with ecological ponds for the first time based on water quality parameters and bacterial communities, which indicates that decomposition capacity is insufficient but improved at the initial stage of the operation, and potential risks like eutrophication require attention.

Abstract:Recirculating aquaculture systems (RASs) have been identified as having high potential for aquaculture development, attributed to their significant advantages, such as higher productivity, reduced water consumption, and improved sustainability. However, increased energy requirements due to the high amount of water recycling and temperature control leads to high operational costs and added environmental impacts from the use of fossil fuels, causing a barrier to their widespread deployment. This study examines the potential for renewable energy integration with RASs to improve their financial and environmental feasibility, while also presenting an overview of its potential and challenges for system optimisation modelling, which is presently absent in the existing literature. Renewable energy coupled with more efficient practices through process integration and advanced monitoring has the potential to make the system more sustainable and profitable. This study offers a comprehensive understanding of the sustainability challenges concerning energy demands in RASs, the significant potential for growth by adopting renewable energy and wider dynamic systems optimisation modelling, and directions for problem-solving using energy optimisation models. To address the challenges of intermittency and instability that arise in the development of renewable energy for RAS, more research on economic and energy optimisation is needed to meet the requirements of design, planning, scheduling, operation, and control of aquaculture. Systematic decision-making guidelines for greater energy efficiency in aquaculture based on system optimisation modelling can improve the sustainability of aquaculture and help to address UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs). With new technological advances in renewable energy, artificial intelligence and water treatment, system-based optimisation models may help identifying which renewable energy types, technology options and energy efficiency improvements should be integrated into different aquaculture systems to transform the economic competitiveness and sustainability of the industry.

A novel combined recirculating treatment system for intensive marine aquaculture

Abstract:This study established a pilot-scale recirculating treatment system that coupled an ecological process with a biological process to achieve adequate water quality and to minimize the water consumption for intensive marine culture. The recirculating treatment system consisted of a settling cell, a biofilter tank, a bivalve tank and gravel beds. The toxic pollutants, threatening the growth of bivalves, were reduced by the settling cell and the biofilter tank, so that the polyculture of shrimp and bivalves could be achieved. The living bivalve tank could function well as a remover of remaining small suspended solids (SS), and other pollutants. As the SS was reduced to a very low level by bivalve tank before the water flowing into the gravel beds, the risk of clogging was prevented. The studies suggested that the system maintained high removal efficiencies of SS, ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) and nitrite nitrogen (NO2--N) and could contribute to the increase in shrimp yield.

Abstract:The need for fish arises from the need for protein in humanâ€TMs diet. Protein is required both for maintenance and growth of worm-out cells. Protein could be sourced from plants-vegetable protein, as well as animals-animal protein, the latter mainly in the form of fish and meat. Fish is a cheap source of protein for human consumption. For this reason, most countries have turned their attention to the development and exploitation of their fisheries resources.Â The recirculatory system is an intensive method of culturing fish. It enables the fish farmer to completely control all the parameters in the production. This study presents a review of the basic and technical parameters needed for Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (RAS). Specifically the study present the principle for the system, the major equations for the design of a recirculation system and its assumptions, the concept of mass balance on the design of oxygen supply, ammonia removal, solids removal and water requirement in the culturing system. In conclusion, study emphasizes that Recirculation Aquaculture systems should be built with good hydraulic effects that is designed by skill personnel, who have acquired relevant engineering knowledge.Â

Abstract:Traditional planting and aquaculture has the problem of large consumption of water resources and land resources, and the water environmental pollution is also a difficult problem facing human beings. Population growth and food safety issues have promoted the concept of aquaponics——a recycling ecological planting and breeding mode. It combines hydroponics and recirculating aquaculture technology to realize water resources and nutrient recycling, low pollution and high productivity and efficiency. In this paper, hydroponics as the main vegetable cultivation method in aquaponics and the main equipment of water treatment in recirculating aquaculture are introduced, and the traditional equipment and its development prospects are analyzed. The greenhouse environments, water quality and nutrient circulation involved in intelligent monitoring and control of aquaponic systems are systematically analyzed and summarized. This paper summarizes the current development of technology and methods in aquaponics and provides prospects for future development trends. With the development of technology, in the future, the aquaponics system will become more intelligent, intensive, accurate and efficient.

Abstract:The growth of conventional aquaculture has created environmental issues due to excessive feeding, low dissolved oxygen level etc into the water body. Organic aquaculture is a recent development as a solution to these issues. It is a clean alternative to reduce pollution and to produce safer consumable food. In the past few decades, recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) were introduced to maintain pond water quality through lesser water exchange, by focusing on water reuse after treatment. In this study, the technical viability of RAS was analyzed for introduction in organic aquaculture systems. Indian major carps (IMCs) were cultured through conventional methods in the three tanks of conventional system, while the same species was grown organically in another three tanks in organic system. The stocking density and physical conditions were kept same for both cultured systems. The RAS consisted of fish culture tank with an average volume of each tank was 165 m 3 , a screen filter, foam fractionator and trickling filter. The various water quality parameters, i.e., solid size distribution in water, and removal efficiencies in biological treatment of both systems were compared. The present study, particle size distribution of solids in water body was measured by filtration, followed by weighing of dry residue solids. Pore sizes of 1000μ, 100μ, 20μ and 3μ were employed for filtration. For organic tanks, a majority of solids are of size between 1 mm and 100 μm. The larger sized particles (> 30 μm) constitute nearly 70 % of the solids and the trait differs from the generalized conclusions of that a major part of sediments will be of sizes less than 20 μm. For the conventional tanks, majority of solids are of size between 3 mm and 20 μm and TAN shows higher removal efficiencies for effluents from organic system rather than conventional system. The results showed that organic aquaculture causes lesser pollution load per weight of fish. The particle size distribution of organic water was better compatible to screening and sedimentation than conventional water. Also the filtration efficiencies in nitrifying trickling filters of both water bodies were comparable, with that of organic water slightly on the higher side. Thus recirculating water treatment systems are introduced in organic aquaculture.

Abstract:As wild-caught fish landings plateau and the global population grows, aquaculture has emerged as the fastest-growing agricultural sector. In the context of urbanization, we present the challenges and opportunities surrounding fish farming in its various forms. Intensive, highly controlled recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) treat and recycle fish effluent to maximize fish yields while conserving water. As a subset of RAS, aquaponic systems further enhance water use efficiency and reduce waste by including a hydroponic component that produces marketable plant crops. We discuss details of aquaponic system design and operation and provide a pictorial guide to the aquaponic system at the Rutgers EcoComplex.

Abstract:Feed management takes the key role in industrial aquaculture, and its purpose is to maximize growth, minimize feed waste, and produce a steady supply of metabolites. The feed management system is made up of feed type, feed level, feeding frequency and feed delivery approach. Feeds formulations and daily feed levels should be based on the energy requirements of the cultured aquatic. Feeding frequency and feed delivery approach can be modified to reduce waste feed, improve water quality and increase productivity.

Abstract:Intensification of aquaculture production must meet global protein requirements without placing excessive demand on earth' s resource capacity. Recirculating Aquaculture Systems ( RAS) incorporate intensive culture protocols controlling the aquaculture production environment, promoting sustainable resource consumption. Both periphyton ( fixed film) and biofloc ( suspended growth) microorganism cultures are being integrated to aquaculture production in RAS, cages and, ponds, with varied climatic conditions and culture species, both independently and in combination. Periphyton and biofloc form the basis of aquaculture ecosystems wherein the highest trophic level is the commercial species under production. Production advantages include feed substitute grazing on produced biomass with improved Food Conversion Ratio (FCR) and growth rate, destressing, probiotic and pathogen control and, water quality management. Review of deployment of fixed film and suspended growth to RAS across materials, processes, conditions and species increases understanding of both commonality and distinctions in utilization of the options and, supports protocols for their use in intensive aquaculture production.
