Abstract:For the excellent complex and recognition function,cyclodextrins have attracted wide research interest. In order to utilize these special properties of cyclodextrins more effectively, immobilization of cyclodextrins,with specific orientation,upon solid substrate is necessary in many potential applications. This paper summarizes the common methods to prepare monolayer/multilayers of cyclodextrins on solid substrate,including the Langmuir-Blodgett method,Layer-by-Layer technique,and chemical adsorption. These methods are compared and evaluated. The application situation of these systems is introduced. Finally,based on preparations and applications,the future research directions of cyclodextrins monolayer/multilayers membranes are discussed. Improving routine methods and developing simpler methods will be the key research of this area in the future.

Abstract:In this paper, the structure and properties of cyclodextrins (CDs) with hydrophilic external and hydrophobic internal cavities are presented. For the special molecular structure of CDs, the characteristics and performances of membranes will be improved by introducing CDs and their derivatives into the membrane. The preparation methods and applications of membranes with CDs are reviewed, including separation of isomers, transfer of metal ions, controlled release of drugs, drug detection and analysis, hydrolyzation of esters etc. The study on molecular conduit of CDs is summarized. Based on these reviews, the prospect of membrane with CDs is discussed.

Abstract:A new class of crystalline inclusion complexes of a multiarm hyperbranched polyether combined with various cyclodextrins (CDs) was successfully prepared. Using self-condensing ring-opening polymerization, a kind of multiarm polyether with a hyperbranched poly(3-ethyl-3-oxetanemethanol) core and multiple linear poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) arms was obtained. It has been found that this kind of hyperbranched polyether can be dissolved in water. Adding alpha-CDs to the multiarm hyperbranched polyether solution, molecular recognition results in the formation of crystalline inclusion complexes based on the noncovalent interactions between the linear PEG arms of the polyether particles and the a-CDs. These multiarm polyether inclusion complexes have been well characterized. Interestingly, quite different from inclusion complexes of CDs and linear polymeric guests, the complexes of the multiarm hyperbranched polyether with a-CDs show a novel lamellar morphology. The experimental results validate that the resultant lamellar crystals have a juxtaposed structure. In addition, the formation mechanism of these inclusion complexes of a multiarm polyether with a-CDs has also been well described. Besides the role of displacement of associated water molecules and the presence of hydrogen bonding between CDs in channel structure CD inclusion complexes, the noncovalent intermolecular forces between CDs and polymers also play an important role in the formation of complex architectures.

Abstract:Cyclodextrin-based molecular tube is a hollow tubular polymer synthesized by threaded cyclodextrins. Recently, it has received extensive attention since its tubular molecular structure and selective inclusion complexation characteristic with various guest molecules including small molecules and polymers. In this paper, the main properties of cyclodextrin-based molecular tube are introduced and the preparation methods are reviewed and compared with each other in detail. The research about the selective inclusion complexation between molecular tube and guest molecules, which include long-chain aliphatic and aromatic compounds is elaborated. The assembling mechanism and influencing factors of complexation are discussed. The applications of molecular tube in self-assembled monolayers, artificial chaperone and potential applications in constructing of novel self-assembly supramolecular architecture are summarized. Finally, the future research directions and problems to be solved in this area are suggested.

Abstract:Highly stable inclusion complexes between cyclodextrin (CD) and guest molecules form due to their host-guest interaction. Polymer systems based on the complexes have been extensively reported in recent years. In this review, we highlight some recent advances from polymer systems with adamantane (Ada), azobenzene (Azo), ferrocene (Fc) and so on as guest molecules in terms of their synthesis, properties and functions. Various polymer topologies ranging from linear, branched, comb-like and hyper-branched are discussed in detail. Abstract:Calculations have been done on β-cyclodextrin 6-O-monobenzoate and its complexes using molecular mechanics MM2 force field. The guest molecules involved were n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, cyclooctane and methylcyclooctane. Owing to lack of dipole–dipole and hydrogen-bonding interactions in the inclusion complexation of the modified cyclodextrin, the calculations of the geometry of the complexes and the inclusion process indicated that the complex formation is stabilized by van der Waals interaction. The energy differences of the modified cyclodextrins by calculation show that the size, shape, conformation of the guest molecules play significant roles in the inclusion complexation.

Abstract:The driving forces leading to the inclusion complexation of cyclodextrins were reviewed, which included the electrostatic interaction, van der Waalsinteraction, hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bonding, release of conformational strain,exclusion of cavity-bound high-energy water, and charge–transferinteraction. It was shown that except for the release of conformation strain and exclusion of cavity-bound water, the otherinteractions were indeed contributive to the complex formation. However, it was concludedthat the enthalpy and entropy changes of the complexation were not good criteria to be used injudging whether a particular driving force was present or important, mainly because of theoccurrence of enthalpy-entropy compensation. On the other hand, the multivariate quantitativestructure-activity relationship analyses usually could illustrate which driving forces wereimportant in certain inclusion complexation systems.

Abstract:The scope of this review gives an insight into the inclusion complex of essential oil (EO) using cyclodextrins (CDs), including mechanism, preparation and characterization. It also mentioned that this process was influenced by the size of the inner cavity of CDs and the chemical profile of EOs. The scope has looked forward to derivative CDs, which are further modifications of native CDs to achieve more solubility and efficiency by adding hydroxyl, sulfobutylether, and methyl groups, and by using an esterification process. Subsequently, the cyclodextrin metal organic frameworks, which correspond to native CDs connected via a metal cation, were anticipated as a biocompatible porous material demonstrating a more sustained release of EOs. Indeed, supramolecular cyclodextrins obtained through the covalent binding between cyclodextrins and cross-linked reagents led to higher water solubility, stability, and sustained release. It then moves on to combining CD with biopolymer by grafting or dual encapsulation, which was studied to modulate the profile of EO release. It then moves on experimental designs used to optimize the encapsulation efficiency to reduce the amount of CD and EO added, minimize energy and time, and optimize the medium efficacy.

Abstract:A series of inclusion complexes between cyclodextrins (α-, β-, HP-β-, and γ-cyclodextrin, HP-β-cyclodextrin = 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin) and [Zn(dmit) 2 ] 2− anion (dmit = 1 , 3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate) were investigated by electronic spectra, induced circular dichroism (ICD) spectra, 1 H-NMR spectra, and quantum chemistry calculations. The stoichiometry of inclusion complexes [Zn(dmit) 2 ] 2− @cyclodextrins in solution was determined by the method of continuous variation. The experimental data showed that inclusion complex [Zn(dmit) 2 ] 2− @β-cyclodextrin adopted 1:2 and 1:1 guest-to-host inclusion ratios in solution, and the inclusion constants (K inclu ) were computed to be 5.85 × 10 7 M −2 and 1.63 × 10 4 M −1 , respectively. In the case of [Zn(dmit) 2 ] 2− @γ-cyclodextrin, the continuous variation method showed the inclusion complex adopted 1:1 guest-to-host ratio and K inclu was determined to be 3.27 × 10 4 M −1 . Moreover, inclusion complex [Zn(dmit) 2 ] 2− @HP-β-cyclodextrin showed different inclusion modes in solution as well. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) was used to assist assignment of the ICD signals in inclusion complexes [Zn(dmit) 2 ] 2− @cyclodextrins. The p → π* transition of [Zn(dmit) 2 ] 2− chromophore, which occurred in the cavity of cyclodextrin, was calculated to be perpendicular to C=C double bonds and thus parallel to the symmetric axis of the host. When subject to the well-known Harata and Kodaka’s rule, the TD-DFT calculations coincided very well with the spectroscopic data in elucidation of the p → π* transition relevant ICD signals of [Zn(dmit) 2 ] 2− @cyclodextrins.
Host-guest stoichiometry affects the physicochemical properties and releases kinetics of beta-cyclodextrin/ ferulic acid inclusion complexes

Abstract:An inclusion system of embedding ferulic acid into β-cyclodextrin (FACD) with different host-guest stoichiometries was prepared by a co-precipitation method. Then, the physicochemical properties and release kinetics of the FACD were evaluated. The results of thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) proved the successful embedding of FA into the β-cyclodextrin matrix. Four mathematical models were applied to adjust the ferulic acid release profile and identify preferential kinetics. The results of physicochemical properties confirmed the successful formation of the complexes. The loading capacity (LC) and encapsulation efficiency (EE) of the inclusion complex (1 : 0.5) were 41.0 ± 3.28 mg g-1 and 52.1 ± 2.31%, respectively, which were significantly higher than other molar ratios. The release behaviour revealed that loaded FA molecules under various host-guest stoichiometries obey different release models. While lower host-guest stoichiometry (1 : 0.5) provided desirable EE, the moderate host-guest stoichiometry (1 : 1) exhibited faster release behaviour. The FACD inclusion complex could be a promising bioactive material for food preservation.
Studies on Molecular Recongnition of (A)-Cyclodextrin with Diphenyl Compounds

Abstract:The cyclodextrins(CDs) are a class of cyclic oligosaccharides made up of six(a), seven(a)or more [a-(1,4)-linked] D-glucopyranose units, and shaped like truncated cones with primary and secondary hydroxyl groups crowning the narrower rim and wider rim respectively. As they have a hydrophobic cavity of appropriate dimension, they can bind with various guest moleculars, such as hydrocarbon, cyclohexane, aromatic compounds, to form inclusion complexes. The cyclodextins inclusion complexation has been considered an ideal model mimicking the enzyme-substrate interaction and a lot of effect has been devoted to it. In this paper, we report our investigation on the inclusion complexation behavior of a-cyclodextrin(a-CD) with diphenyl compounds in order to further explore the molecular recongnition mechanism of 2:1 inclusion complexation of a-CD with aromatic compounds.Figure 1: Possible structures of the inclusion compounds.The inclusion complexation behavior of a-CD with sym-diphenyl-urea, sym-diphenyl-thiourea and diphenyl kotone as respective guest moleclars was studied by ultraviolet spectrometric titrations.The absorption spectral changes observed for the compounds in the absence and presence of a-CD are used to draw the corresponding Benesi-Hildebrand plots and caculate the complex stability constant value (Ks) for the inclusion compounds.The 2:1 inclusion complexations show higher binding constants by cooperative binding of one guest molecular in the closely two hydrophobic cyclodextrin cavites as compared with 1:1 inclusion complexations.The highest value observed for sym-diphenyl-urea could be due to the formation of a hydrogen bond between the carbonyl group and the hydrogen in the hydroxyl group of CD and this is not possible with sym-tiphenyl-thiourea. The lowest value observed for diphenyl kotone indicate the hydrophobic interaction is one of the binding force of cyclodextrin inclusion complex.

Abstract:Cyclodextrins can encapsulate various molecules and have exciting applications in supramolecular, pharmaceutical, material, food and environmental chemistry. Typically, the encapsulation into the cyclodextrin cavity confers to the guest improved solubility, stability, bioavailability and organoleptic properties. In recent years, cyclodextrin multi-cavity systems have also been studied to encapsulate biomolecules or drugs. This context has inspired us to synthesize and characterize two new β and γ-cyclodextrin dimers and compare their complexation behavior. The two cavities in the same molecule significantly improve the stability of inclusion complexes. Particularly we investigated cholic acid, cholesterol and doxorubicin as guests. The extent of binding between a guest molecule and β and γ-cyclodextrin dimers was established by molecular docking. Cholic acid at physiological pH was chosen as a water-soluble cholesterol analog for the investigation in water by isothermal calorimetry. We found that dimers can include cholate species, cholesterol and doxorubicin better than native cyclodextrins, and the cyclodextrin type tunes the stability of inclusion complexes.

This review comprehensively explores the latest advancements in cyclodextrin chemistry, focusing on the synthesis and characterization of cyclodextrin derivatives and their inclusion complexes. This review examines the biological activities of cyclodextrins, highlighting their pharmacological properties and pharmacokinetics, and discussing their promising applications in drug delivery systems. Furthermore, the industrial utilization of cyclodextrins, including their role in nanomaterials and nanostructured coatings, as well as their potential in environmental remediation, are explored. Abstract:Cyclodextrins have received attention recently due to their superior binding with countless hydrophobic molecules. The host-guest interaction between the cyclodextrin cavity and the hydrophobic component not only facilitates the formation of a strong inclusion complex (IC), but also improves its stability against thermal degradation. The functionality of cyclodextrins for the delivery of hydrophilic components is less explored in comparison. This study discusses the application of β-cyclodextrin (βCD) for the delivery of highly bioavailable and hydrophilic iron, ferric sodium EDTA, which exhibits great functionality in the presence of polyphenols and phytates with potential application in food fortification. The formation of IC was dependent on the cyclodextrin amount and alcoholic co-solvent and was influenced by the stirring duration. For ferric sodium EDTA, the highest inclusion rate (IR) of ∼77% was obtained after 72 hours of mixing in 25.4% (v/v) alcohol at a ratio of iron : βCD of 1 : 6. A higher IR (∼96%) was obtained after 6 hours of stirring with less soluble ferrous ammonium phosphate in comparison. The melting temperature (Tm) of the ferrous ammonium phosphate complex increased from ∼172 to ∼294 °C. The high IR and enhanced thermal resistance of the complex make βCDs potential carriers for ferrous ammonium phosphate delivery and fortification of foods processed at high temperatures.

Abstract:Sodium Sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) is a derivative of β-cyclodextrin, characterized by its stereo structure, which closely resembles a truncated cone with a hydrophobic internal cavity. The solubility of insoluble substances within the hydrophobic cavity is significantly enhanced, reducing contact between the guest and the environment. Consequently, SBE-β-CD is frequently employed as a co-solvent and stabilizer. As the research progresses, it has been observed that the inclusion of SBE-β-CD is reversible and competitive. Besides, some inclusion complexes undergo distinct physicochemical property alterations compared to the guests. Additionally, certain guests exhibit varying inclusions with SBE-β-CD at different concentrations. These features have contributed to the expanding applications. SBE-β-CD finds widespread application in pharmaceutics as a protective agent and pKa regulator, in pharmaceutical analysis as a chiral substance separator, and in biomedical engineering for encapsulating dyes and modifying sensors. The article will elaborate in detail on the physicochemical properties of SBE-β-CD, encapsulation principles, and factors influencing the formation of inclusion complexes. Furthermore, the review focuses on the application of SBE-β-CD through encapsulation in pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical analysis, and biomedical engineering. Finally, the prospects and potential applications of SBE-β-CD are discussed.

Abstract:Research into macromolecular self-assembly has been progressively developing since the 1970s but with a little affect from the achievements of supramolecular chemistry. In recent years, this situation has changed as more and more factors and concepts in supramolecular chemistry have been introduced into studies of the self-assembly of polymers. In this respect, inclusion complexation based on cyclodextrins plays a remarkable role. In this tutorial review, we address how inclusion complexation has been employed and used to promote the recent developments in macromolecular self-assembly. These include the amphiphilicity adjustment of macromolecules, non-covalent linkages for forming pseudo block copolymers and micelles, surface modification and functionalization of polymeric micelles and vesicles, and the combination of synthetic polymeric assemblies with biological moieties. Furthermore, the realization of the reversible stimuli-responsiveness of polymeric assemblies and materials, particularly hydrogels by means of controllable inclusion complexation is discussed as well.

Abstract:Recent progresses in molecular self-assembly based on the inclusion complexation between cyclodextrins and various guest macromolecules have been reviewed, which include ( I) polyrotaxanes molecular necklace), polypseudorotaxanes, his ( polypseudorotaxane) s or bis ( polyrotaxane) s, molecular tubes or his molecular tube) s and supramolecular hydrogels induced by the complexation between cyclodextrins or their dimers and the polymer guests including linear, comb, multi-arms star or hyperbranched ones; (2) linear or hyperbranched supramolecular polymers prepared by the self-assembly of bridged cyclodextrins and their bridged guest molecules; (3) intelligent systems showing stimuli responsive properties including temperature, pH, light or guest molecules; (4) polymeric micelles and hollow spheres made in water by the inclusion between a linear hydrophilic polymer containing cyclodextrin as side groups and a linear hydrophobic polymer with adamantine appendants. In addition, the potential applications of the resultant assemblies are discussed.
