Abstract:This paper studies the interval estimation problem of reliability parameters of binomial distribution, in the case of zero-failure data, using the method of two-sided M-Bayesian credible limit. It proves the hypothesis that was provided by Han [1]: two-sided M-Bayesian credible limits is superior to the corresponding two-sided classical confidence limits when estimation reliability derived from binomial distribution in the case of zero-failure data.

Abstract:In this paper, by establishing a Borel–Cantelli lemma for a capacity which is not necessarily continuous, and a link between a sequence of independent random variables under the sub-linear expectation and a sequence of independent random variables on ℝ∞ under a probability, we give the sufficient and necessary conditions of the strong law of large numbers for independent and identically distributed random variables under the sub-linear expectation, and the sufficient and necessary conditions for the convergence of an infinite series of independent random variables, without the assumption on the continuity of the capacities. A purely probabilistic proof of a weak law of large numbers is also given.

Abstract:The central limit theorem of martingales is the fundamental tool for studying the convergence of stochastic processes, especially stochastic integrals and differential equations. In this paper, the central limit theorem and the functional central limit theorem are obtained for martingale-like random variables under the sub-linear expectation. As applications, the Lindeberg’s central limit theorem is obtained for independent but not necessarily identically distributed random variables, and a new proof of the Lévy characterization of a GBrownian motion without using stochastic calculus is given. For proving the results, Rosenthal’s inequality and the exponential inequality for the martingale-like random variables are established.

Abstract:We present a short proof of a celebrated result of Gács and Körner giving sufficient and necessary condition on the joint distribution of two discrete random variables $X$ and $Y$ for the case when their mutual information matches the extractable (in the limit) common information. Our proof is based on the observation that the mere existence of certain random variables jointly distributed with $X$ and $Y$ can impose restriction on all random variables jointly distributed with $X$ and $Y$.

Abstract:A rational probability distribution on four binary random variables $X, Y, Z, U$ is constructed which satisfies the conditional independence relations $[X \mathrel{\text{$\perp\mkern-10mu\perp$}} Y]$, $[X \mathrel{\text{$\perp\mkern-10mu\perp$}} Z \mid U]$, $[Y \mathrel{\text{$\perp\mkern-10mu\perp$}} U \mid Z]$ and $[Z \mathrel{\text{$\perp\mkern-10mu\perp$}} U \mid XY]$ but whose entropy vector violates the Ingleton inequality. This settles a recent question of Studený (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory vol. 67, no. 11) and shows that there are, up to symmetry, precisely ten inclusion-minimal sets of conditional independence assumptions on four discrete random variables which make the Ingleton inequality hold. The last case in the classification of which of these inequalities are essentially conditional is also settled.

Abstract:Through the study of large deviations theory for matrix Brownian motion, Biane-Capitaine-Guionnet proved the inequality $\chi(X) \leq \chi^*(X)$ that relates two analogs of entropy in free probability defined by Voiculescu. We give a new proof of $\chi \leq \chi^*$ that is elementary in the sense that it does not rely on stochastic differential equations and large deviation theory. Moreover, we generalize the result to conditional microstates and non-microstates free entropy.

Abstract:It is known that few characterization results of the logistic distribution were available before, although it is similar in shape to the normal one whose characteristic properties have been well investigated. Fortunately, in the last decade, several authors have made great progress in this topic. Some interesting characterization results of the logistic distribution have been developed recently. In this paper, we further provide some new results by the distributional equalities in terms of order statistics of the underlying distribution and the random exponential shifts. The characterization of the closely related Pareto type II distribution is also investigated.

Abstract:We consider a sequence of dependent Bernoulli variables where the success probability of the trial conditional on the past history is a linear function of the mean number of successes achieved to that point. An almost sure invariance principle is established for the partial sum and we also generalize the model to a multi-dimensional case, extending the results of Heyde (2004), James et al. Abstract:We consider a class of dependent Bernoulli variables where the conditional success probability is a linear combination of the last few trials and the original success probability. We obtain its limit theorems including the strong law of large numbers, weak invariance principle, and law of the iterated logarithm. We also derive some statistical inference results which make the model applicable. Simulation results are exhibited as well to show that with small sample size the convergence rate is satisfying and the proposed estimators behave well.

Abstract:In the present paper, based on the representation of the logistic distribution as a normal scale mixture obtained by L. Stefanski in 1990, it is demonstrated that the logistic distribution can be limiting for sums of a random number of random variables and other statistics that admit (at least asymptotically) additive representation and are constructed from samples with random sizes. These results complement a theorem proved by B. V. and D. B. Gnedenko in 1982 that established convergence of the distributions of extreme order statistics in samples with geometrically distributed random sizes to the logistic distribution. Hence, along with the normal law, this distribution can be used as an asymptotic approximation of the distributions of observations that can be assumed to have an additive structure, for example, random-walk-type time series. An approach is presented for the definition of the new asymmetric generalization of the logistic distribution as a special normal variance–mean mixture.

Comput., 35 (2006), pp. 964–984] asserts that for any collection of [math] independent nonnegative random variables [math], each with expectation at most 1, [math], where [math]. In this paper, we investigate this conjecture for the class of discrete log-concave probability distributions, and we prove a strengthened version. More specifically, we show that the conjectured bound [math] holds when [math]'s are independent discrete log-concave with arbitrary expectation.

Abstract:In this paper, we give an alternative proof of the fact that, when compounding a nonnegative probability distribution, convex ordering between the distributions of the number of summands implies convex ordering between the resulting compound distributions. Although this is a classical textbook result in risk theory, our proof exhibits a concrete coupling between the compound distributions being compared, using the representation of one-period discrete martingale laws as a mixture of the corresponding extremal measures.

Abstract:The literature has covered the features and uses of the traditional univariate and bivariate logistic distributions in great detail. It is reasonable to wonder, though, if logistic marginals and conditionals could exhibit a similar behavior. A phenomenon that is comparable to both bivariate exponential and bivariate normal distributions. In this study, we will concentrate on bivariate distributions where one family of conditionals is marginal and the other family is of logistic type. Pseudo-logistic distributions are the name for such distributions. Research on conditionally specified models has revealed, however, that only in cases where the variables are independent will logistic marginals and both conditionals be of the logistic form occur. We talk about the features of distributional aspects and how they are built using the original. Both the original and the new conditioning regimes are used in two different ways. Possible generalizations are also considered. We also provide an example of a Pseudo-logistic model application.

Abstract:We investigate conditional entropy with respect to monotonic (invariant, decreasing, or increasing) measurable partitions. In particular, we obtain Brin-Katok's and Katok's entropy formula for conditional entropy with respect to invariant, decreasing and a large class of increasing partitions. Our proofs develop new adaptions on applying conditional variants of Shannon-McMillan-Breiman theorems corresponding to the monotonic partitions, to link with the local and global conditional entropy forms. As an application, we obtain a number of reformulations of the unstable entropy for ergodic measures of general diffeomorphisms.

Abstract:As alternatives to the normal distributions, $t$ distributions are widely applied in robust analysis for data with outliers or heavy tails. The properties of the multivariate $t$ distribution are well documented in Kotz and Nadarajah's book, which, however, states a wrong conclusion about the conditional distribution of the multivariate $t$ distribution. Previous literature has recognized that the conditional distribution of the multivariate $t$ distribution also follows the multivariate $t$ distribution. We provide an intuitive proof without directly manipulating the complicated density function of the multivariate $t$ distribution.

A Short and General Duality Proof for Wasserstein Distributionally Robust Optimization

Abstract:We present a general duality result for Wasserstein distributionally robust optimization that holds for any Kantorovich transport cost, measurable loss function, and nominal probability distribution. Assuming an interchangeability principle inherent in existing duality results, our proof only uses one-dimensional convex analysis. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the interchangeability principle holds if and only if certain measurable projection and weak measurable selection conditions are satisfied. To illustrate the broader applicability of our approach, we provide a rigorous treatment of duality results in distributionally robust Markov decision processes and distributionally robust multistage stochastic programming. Additionally, we extend our analysis to other problems such as infinity-Wasserstein distributionally robust optimization, risk-averse optimization, and globalized distributionally robust counterpart.

Abstract:The probability distribution of a function of a subsystem conditioned on the value of the function of the whole, in the limit when the ratio of their values goes to zero, has a limit law: It equals the unconditioned marginal probability distribution weighted by an exponential factor whose exponent is uniquely determined by the condition. We apply this theorem to explain the canonical equilibrium ensemble of a system in contact with a heat reservoir. Since the theorem only requires analysis at the level of the function of the subsystem and reservoir, it is applicable even without the knowledge of the composition of the reservoir itself, which extends the applicability of the canonical ensemble. Furthermore, we generalize our theorem to a model with strong interaction that contributes an additional term to the exponent, which is beyond the typical case of approximately additive functions. This result is new in both physics and mathematics, as a theory for the Gibbs conditioning principle for strongly correlated systems. A corollary provides a precise formulation of what a temperature bath is in probabilistic term
