Abstract:The elastodynamic problems of magneto-electro-elastic hollow cylinders in the state of axisymmetric plane strain case can be transformed into two Volterra integral equations of the second kind about two functions with respect to time. Interpolation functions were introduced to approximate two unknown functions in each time subinterval and two new recursive formulae are derived. By using the recursive formulae, numerical results were obtained step by step. Under the same time step, the accuracy of the numerical results by the present method is much higher than that by the traditional quadrature method.

Abstract:Summary By means of introducing a new dependent variable and the separation of variables technique as well as the superposition method, the axisymmetric plane strain dynamic problem of a special non-homogeneous magneto-electro-elastic hollow cylinder is finally transformed to two Volterra integral equations of the second kind with respect to two functions of time. At each time subinterval, a cubic Hermite polynomial is adopted to approximate the two undetermined functions, and the recursive formula is obtained.The integral equation is then solved successfully. The transient responses of displacements, stresses, electric and magnetic potentials are finally determined. Numerical results are presented at the end.
Exact Solution and Transient Behavior for Torsional Vibration of Functionally Graded Finite Hollow Cylinders

Abstract:Exact solutions are obtained for transient torsional responses of a finitely long, functionally graded hollow cylinder under three different end conditions, i.e. free–free, free–fixed and fixed–fixed. The cylinder with its external surface fixed is subjected to a dynamic shearing stress at the internal surface. The material properties are assumed to vary in the radial direction in a power law form, while keep invariant in the axial direction. With expansion in the axial direction in terms of trigonometric series, the governing equations for the unknown functions about the radial coordinate r and time t are deduced. By applying the variable substitution technique, the superposition method and the separation of variables consecutively, series-form solutions of the equations are obtained. Natural frequencies and the transient torsional responses are finally discussed for a functionally graded finite hollow cylinder.

Abstract:On the basis of equilibrium equations for static electric and magnetic fields, two unknown functions related to electric and magnetic fields were firstly introduced to rewrite the governing equations, boundary conditions and initial conditions for mechanical field. Then by introducing a dependent variable and a special function satisfying the inhomogeneous mechanical boundary conditions, the governing equation for a new variable with homogeneous mechanical boundary conditions is obtained. By using the separation of variables technique as well as the electric and magnetic boundary conditions, the dynamic problem of a functionally graded magneto-electro-elastic hollow sphere under spherically symmetric deformation is transformed to two Volterra integral equations of the second kind about two unknown functions of time. Cubic Hermite polynomials are adopted to approximate the two undetermined functions at each time subinterval and the recursive formula for solving the integral equations is derived. Transient responses of displacements, stresses, electric and magnetic potentials are completely determined at the end. Numerical results are presented and discussed.

Abstract:Non-dimensionalized equations and boundary conditions are presented for the torsion problem of an anisotropic body. The error of the fundamental solution cited in some boundary element books Is pointed out after an examination of the fundamental solution. Furthermore,a necessary and sufficient boundary integral equation is given for the problem and compared with the conventional boundary integral equation. Numerical results show that great errors of the boundary shear stresses obtained by the conventional boundary integral equation appear with a small error of torsion stiffness. Meanwhile,the necessary and sufficient;boundary integral equation always gives accurate results.

Firstly, a new dependent variable is introduced to rewrite the governing equation, the boundary conditions as well as the initial conditions. Secondly, a special function is introduced to transform the inhomogeneous boundary conditions to the homogeneous ones. Then by virtue of the orthogonal expansion technique, the equation with respect to the time variable is derived, of which the solution can be obtained. The displacement solution is finally presented, which can degenerate in a rather straightforward way to the solution for a homogeneous orthotropic cylindrical shell and isotropic solid cylinder as well as that for a non-homogeneous isotropic cylindrical shell. Using the present method, integral transform can be avoided. It is fit for a cylindrical shell with arbitrary thickness subjected to arbitrary thermal loads. It is also very convenient to deal with dynamic thermoelastic problems for different boundary conditions. Besides, the numerical calculation involved is very easy to be performed. Several examples are presented.
A Theoretical Solution of Cylindrically Isotropic Cylindrical Tube for Axisymmetric Plane Strain Dynamic Thermoelastic Problem

Abstract:A dynamic thermoelastic solution of a cylindrically isotropic cylindrical tube or solid cylinder with axisymmetric plane deformations is developed. Since there exist thermal boundary conditions and tractions on the two surfaces of a cylindrical tube, the problem under consideration is with inhomogeneous boundary conditions. Therefore we introduce a special function to transform the inhomogeneous boundary conditions to homogeneous ones for an unknown function. Then by using the method of separation of variables, the unknown function can be expressed as the multiplication series of Bessel functions and unknown time functions. Thirdly, by virtue of the orthogonal properties of Bessel functions, the equations about these unknown time functions are derived and the solutions are obtained. Finally, the displacement is obtained by adding the two parts mentioned above. By means of the present method, integral transform can be avoided. It is suitable for arbitrary thermal loads and mechanical loads. Numerical results are also presented for thermal shocked, cylindrically isotropic cylindrical tube and solid cylinder.

Abstract:By using the power-exponential function method and the extended hyperbolic auxiliary equation method, we present the explicit solutions of the subsidiary elliptic-like equation. With the aid of the subsidiary elliptic-like equation and a simple transformation, we obtain the exact solutions of Hirota equation which include bright solitary wave, dark solitary wave, bell profile solitary wave solutions and Jacobian elliptic function solutions. Some of these solutions are found for the first time, which may be useful for depicting nonlinear physical phenomena. This approach can also be applied to solve the other nonlinear partial differential equations.

Recently, Guo and Liu (2008) derived Liouville-type results for the positive solution of the semilinear elliptic system (0.1) in the whole space & Ropf;N (N >= 3). However, the case N = 2 is different and difficult because u and v may change signs. Using the method of moving spheres in the integral form combined with integral inequalities, we give a complete classification of the classical solutions to the above system in & Ropf;2. This seems the first result for the classification of solutions (u, v) (here u and v are not required to be positive solutions) to the critical order system (0.1) in the two-dimensional case.

Abstract:In this paper, a detailed and comprehensive linear stability analysis of a rolling toroidal wheel is performed. The wheel is modeled as a rigid toroid-shaped body rolling without slipping on a horizontal surface. The nonlinear equations of motion constitute a Differential-Algebraic Equations system, given by the dynamic equilibrium equations augmented with the nonholonomic constraints, which arise from the no-slip condition. The circular steady motion and the linearized equations of motion along this relative equilibrium are obtained, for both the solid and hollow tori. The expressions of the linearized equations and the corresponding eigenvalues are derived analytically as a function of the torus aspect ratio. The variation of the stability boundary with the torus aspect ratio is shown. A comparison of the results obtained in the solid and hollow scenarios is included, and all the results are validated with the rolling hoop, which corresponds to a degenerate torus with zero aspect ratio. In the particular case of the steady straight-line rolling and spinning about a vertical diameter, which constitute limit motions of the circular steady motion, the critical rotational and angular speeds required for stabilization are obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, with the help of Mathematica, three travelling wave solutions for a class of nonlinear evolution equations u(tt) + au(xx) + bu + cu(3) = 0 are obtained by trigonometric function method and Wu-eliminition method which include new trarelling wave solutions, bell soliton solutions and kink soliton solutions. Some equations such as Duffing equation, Klein-Gordon equation, Landau-Ginburg-Higgs equation and phi(4) equation are particular cases of the evolution equations. The method also can be applied to other nonlinear equations.

Abstract:We study an abstract linear viscoelastic equation in Hilbert space. It fits some convolution type of integro-differential equations which govern dynamics in viscoelastic or thermoviscoelastic materials. A new semigroup approach is proposed which is adapted from a semigroup approach designed originally to a second-order abstract linear integro-differential equation. As compared with the existing semigroup approach, the system contraction can be obtained readily. Sufficient conditions for the system exponential stability are also established. An illustrative example is given, and numerical simulations are provided. They are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis.

The displacement solution was finally obtained by adding the two parts mentioned above. The present method can avoid the integral transform and is fit for arbitrary loads. Numerical results are presented for internally shocked isotropic and cylindrically isotropic cylindrical shells and externally shocked cylinders, as well as for an externally shocked, cylindrically isotropic cylindrical shell that is fixed at the internal surface.
