Local Clusters in Global Commodity Chains--Cased by the "business Circles" in Dongguan

Abstract:Following a brief theoretical review on the relations between global commodity chain and industrial clusters, with particular emphasis on the recent policy implications for investment policies in developing countries, this paper discusses the changing patterns of global_local ties in the business circles in Dongguan based on our field researches conducted in 1999 and 2000 in this area. We suggest three key transformations in local industrial policies while the competitive emphasis shifts from cost advantage to the agglomeration advantages and the division between the overseas market and the domestic market is increasing blurred after China's entrance to WTO.
