Maize Breeding for Drought Resistance

Abstract:Drought is the main constraint for maize production. So it is very necessary to breed maize for drought resistance. The paper indicated the main breeding methods for drought resistance and focused to introduce the experiences of CIMYYT on stress management and the use of secondary traits and selection indices. Timing, stress intensity and uniformity are the key factors for stress management. Grain yield, ears per plant, anthesis-silking interval, leaf senescence, tassel size and leaf rolling are the important secondary traits for drought tolerance.
