A Novel Synthesis of Hierarchical Porous Carbons from Interpenetrating Polymer Networks for High Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes

Abstract:A novel strategy for the synthesis of hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs) from interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) for advanced supercapacitor electrodes was reported. There is hydrogen-bonding interaction between resorcinol/formaldehyde (R/F) resol and zinc tartrate, and they were introduced into the inter space of sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) to form IPNs. HPCs with foam-like macropores, uniform mesopores (similar to 3.8 nm), and abundant micropores were fabricated by direct carbonization of the IPNs. The macropores come from the pyrolysis of PAAS, and the uniform mesopores are ascribed to the synergistic effect of PAAS and zinc tartrate, while the decomposition of IPNs and zinc tartrate and the carbothermal reduction process generate abundant micropores. The resultant HPCs with a high specific surface area up to 1371 m(2) g(-1), as a supercapacitor electrode exhibit a high specific capacitance of 283 F g(-1) at 1.0 A g(-1). Besides, the electrode shows high rate capability in which a high current density of 20 A g(-1) for charge/discharge operation is available (182 F g(-1)). Moreover, HPC-1.5 electrode shows excellent electrochemical stability up to 10000 cycles at 2.0 A g(-1) with 95.86% retention. This finding highlights new opportunities for well-structured porous carbons derived from IPNs to achieve advanced supercapacitor devices. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We design a novel solvent- and self-template strategy to fabricate carbon materials with ultramicro-, supermicro- and mesopores through a simple solvothermal reaction of phloroglucinol and terephthaldehyde in dioxane using acetic acid as the catalyst, followed by carbonization. Dioxane serves simultaneously as a solvent in the reaction system and a template to generate mesopores (3.6 nm). Meanwhile, phloroglucinol/terephthaldehyde polymeric organic frameworks act as a self-template to produce regular and well-developed ultramicropores (0.54 nm) and some supermicropores (0.86 and 13 nm) during carbonization. High specific surface area (1003 m(2) g(-1)) coupled with hierarchical porous structure endow the resultant carbon electrode excellent electrochemical properties including a satisfactory specific capacitance (214 F g(-1) at 1.0 A g(-1)), excellent rate capability (154 F g(-1) at a very high current density of 50 A g-1) as well as superb long-term cycling stability (95.5% retention of initial capacitance after 10000 cycles) in alkaline electrolyte. Compared with traditional synthetic strategy for porous carbons, the present approach can be easily carried out, avoiding tedious procedure, customized hard/soft template or extra activation step, and thus highlights new opportunities towards the simple and highly efficient synthesis of well-designed porous carbons for supercapacitor applications. Synthesis and Electrochemical Performance of Microporous Carbon Using A Zinc(Ii)-Organic Coordination Polymer

Abstract:Microporous carbon was prepared using a novel procedure based on a zinc(II)-organic coordination polymer. The polymer was prepared through the coordination interaction of zinc ions with tartaric acid, and then it was introduced into the open networks of resorcinol/formaldehyde (R/F) resol using hydrogen-bonding interactions. The R/F resol and zinc-organic coordination compound system copolymerized to produce an R/F and zinc-organic coordination copolymer. The copolymer was then heat-treated at 950 degrees C to decompose and evaporate zinc to fabricate microporous carbon materials. The carbon materials possessed relatively regular large micropores, with a specific surface area of up to 1260 m(2).g(-1) and a total pore volume of 0.63 cm(3).g(-1). The resultant microporous carbon materials were used as supercapacitor electrodes, exhibiting an equivalent series resistance of 0.46 Omega, and ideal capacitive behavior with a rectangular shape in cyclic voltammograms. Galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements of the carbon materials gave a specific capacitance of 196 F.g(-1) at a current density of 1 A.g(-1) and 137 F.g(-1) at a large current density of 10 A.g(-1). A high retention of 98% was measured for the long-term cycling stability (similar to 1000 cycles) of the mesoporous carbon. Overall, the microporous carbon materials exhibited very good electrochemical performance. This study highlights the potential of well-designed microporous carbon materials as electrodes for diverse supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization was utilized to prepare well-defined cylindrical molecular bottlebrushes which were employed as building blocks and transformed into porous nanonetwork-structured carbons (PNSCs) via hypercross-linking chemistry and shape-regulated carbonization. The as-prepared PNSCs exhibited a unique nanomorphology-tunable characteristic by simply varying carbonization conditions. Because of their three-dimensional network nanomorphologies with well-developed hierarchical porous structures and conductive carbon framework, the PNSCs demonstrated excellent electrochemical performance in lithium-sulfur batteries.

Abstract:Novel three-dimensional (3D) foam-like porous carbon architectures with homogeneous N doping and unique mesopore-in-macropore structures have been fabricated from a metal-organic complex via a simple template-free solid state method, which have a high specific surface area (2732 m2 g-1), large pore volume (3.31 cm3 g-1), interconnected hierarchical pore structures with macro/meso/micro multimodal distribution and abundant surface functionality N doping (5.36 wt%). These characteristics give high catalytic performance for oxygen reduction with an onset potential of 0.98 V [ versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)] and a half-wave potential of 0.83 V (versus RHE) in alkaline media, which are comparable with those of the state-of-the-art platinum/carbon catalyst and many noble metal free catalysts. These results demonstrate the significant advantages of the unique mesopore-in-macropore porous structures with efficient heteroatom doping, which provides abundant accessible active sites for high mass and charge transports. The present work provides a new, simple and environmentally safe synthesis strategy for the preparation of 3D porous carbon architectures for use as efficient electrochemical energy devices and gives good insight into the fabrication of advanced nanostructured materials.

Abstract:Constructing three-dimensionally interconnected nanoscale networks is critical for porous materials to achieving enhanced pore accessibility and fast mass transport. Currently, development of facile and effective methods for fabrication of three-dimensional polymeric and carbonaceous networks with a well-defined nanostructure is still challenging. Herein, we present a successful development of a novel class of polymeric and carbonaceous nanoscale networks based on the union of self-assembly and hypercrosslinking. A poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-polystyrene (PMMA-b-PS) diblock copolymer was first self-assembled into uniform PMMA@PS core-shell nanospheres, and then the resulting nanospheres were used as building blocks to construct polymeric nanoscale networks by hypercrosslinking. Due to their hypercrosslinked framework, the as-prepared polymeric nanoscale networks were further transformed into carbonaceous nanoscale networks after carbonization. The resulting nanoporous materials have well-developed three-dimensionally interconnected hierarchical porosity and thus hold great promise in many applications, for example, as CO2 capture materials and as supercapacitor electrodes.
Hollow Carbon Nanospheres with Developed Porous Structure and Retained N Doping for Facilitated Electrochemical Energy Storage.

Abstract:Development of highly porous carbons with abundant surface functionalities and well-defined nanostructure is of significance for many important electrochemical energy storage systems. However, porous carbons suffer from a compromise between porosity, doped functionality, and nanostructure that have thus far restricted their performances. Here, we report the design of highly porous, nitrogenenriched hollow carbon nanospheres (PN-HCNs) by an interfacial copolymerization strategy followed by NH3-assisted carbonization, and further demonstrate their significance and effectiveness in enhancing the electrochemical performances. The PN-HCN simultaneously delivers a large surface area (1237 m(2) g(-1)) and high N functionalities (6.25 atom %) with a remarkable efficiency of the surface area increase to N loss ratio enabled by NH3 treatment while inheriting the hollow nanospherical structure. Accordingly, owing to the enhanced surface area and retained N doping, the prepared PN-HCN demonstrates outstanding electrochemical performances as a cathode host in lithium-sulfur batteries, including a near-to-theoretical capacity of 1620 mAh g(-1), high rate capability and good cycling stability (789 mAh g(-1) at 0.5C after 200 cycles). These results are superior to those of HCN without NH 3 treatment. Also, PN-HCN exhibits superior capacitances (203 F g(-1)) and fast ion transport ability in supercapacitors. Our finding shows the simultaneous achievement of both highly porous structures and sufficient N functionalities for high-performance applications.

Abstract:A facile approach to fabricate novel highly microporous carbons has been developed by direct carbonization of lowly cross-linked polystyrene. The as-prepared highly microporous carbons demonstrate unusually high micropore rate (97%), high surface area (1108 m(2) g(-1)) and uniform pore size distribution, and thus exhibit excellent size-selective adsorption and electrochemical properties.

Abstract:<p>Hierarchical 1D carbon structures are attractive due to their mechanical, chemical and electrochemical properties however the synthesis of these materials can be costly and complicated. Here, through the combination of inexpensive acetylacetonate salts of Ni, Co and Fe with a solution of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), self-assembling carbon-metal fabrics (CMFs) containing unique 1D hierarchical structures can be created via easy and low-cost heat treatment without the need for costly catalyst deposition nor a dangerous hydrocarbon atmosphere. Microscopic and spectroscopic measurements show that the CMFs form through the decomposition and exsolution of metal nanoparticle domains which then catalyze the formation of carbon nanotubes through the decomposition by-products of the PAN. These weakly bound nanoparticles form structures similar to trichomes found in plants, with a combination of base-growth, tip-growth and peapod-like structures, where the metal domain exhibits a core(graphitic)-shell(disorder) carbon coating where the thickness is in-line with the metal-carbon binding energy. These CMFs were used as a cathode in a flexible zinc-air battery which exhibited superior performance to pure electrospun carbon fibers, with their metallic nanoparticle domains acting as bifunctional catalysts. This work therefore unlocks a potentially new category of composite metal-carbon fiber based structures for energy storage applications and beyond.</p>

Abstract:Porous Fe2O3 nanotubes have been fabricated by annealing the electrospun precursor nanofibers. Moreover, the mechanism for the formation of the controllable Fe2O3 nanostructures is investigated through manipulating the concentration of the electrospun precursor solution and also discussed based on their morphological evolution processes. When evaluated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the porous Fe2O3 nanotubes exhibit good lithium storage performance with high specific capacity of 1407.9 mAh g(-1) and good cycling stability (stable up to 250 cycles), which is attributed to the unique morphology of the porous, hollow and continuous one dimensional (1D) nanostructures. These results demonstrate that further improvement or optimization of electrochemical performance in metal oxide-based electrode materials could be realized by the design of 1D nanostructures with unique morphologies. Abstract:A unique "integrated hard-templating strategy" is described for facile synthesis of a carbonaceous material with a novel three-dimensional (3D) branched hollow architecture. A set of steps, including template formation, surface coating and template removal, all occur in a spontaneous and orderly manner in the one-pot hydrothermal process. Investigations on structural evolution during the process reveal that pre-synthesized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles are first dissociated and then self-assembled into 3D branched superstructures of ZnO as templates. Initial self-assembly is followed by coating of the glucose-derived carbonaceous materials and etching of interior ZnO by organic acids released in situ by hydrolysis of glucose. The 3D-branched hollow architecture is shown to greatly enhance supercapacitor performance. The research described here provides guidance into the development of strategies for complex hollow carbonaceous architectures for a variety of potential applications.

Abstract:A unique general, large‐scale, simple, and cost‐effective strategy, i.e., foaming‐assisted electrospinning, for fabricating various transition metal oxides into ultrafine nanoparticles (TMOs UNPs) that are uniformly embedded in hierarchically porous carbon nanofibers (HPCNFs) has been developed. Taking advantage of the strong repulsive forces of metal azides as the pore generator during carbonization, the formation of uniform TMOs UNPs with homogeneous distribution and HPCNFs is simultaneously implemented. The combination of uniform ultrasmall TMOs UNPs with homogeneous distribution and hierarchically porous carbon nanofibers with interconnected nanostructure can effectively avoid the aggregation, dissolution, and pulverization of TMOs, promote the rapid 3D transport of both Li ions and electrons throughout the whole electrode, and enhance the electrical conductivity and structural integrity of the electrode. As a result, when evaluated as binder‐free anode materials in Li‐ion batteries, they displayed extraordinary electrochemical properties with outstanding reversible capacity, excellent capacity retention, high Coulombic efficiency, good rate capability, and superior cycling performance at high rates. More importantly, the present work opens up a wide horizon for the fabrication of a wide range of ultrasmall metal/metal oxides distributed in 1D porous carbon structures, leading to advanced performance and enabling their great potential for promising large‐scale applications.

Abstract:Hollow nanoporous carbon architectures (HNCs) present significant utilitarian value for a wide variety of applications. Facile and efficient preparation of HNCs has long been pursued but still remains challenging. Herein, we for the first time demonstrate that single-component metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) crystals, rather than the widely reported hybrid ones which necessitate tedious operations for preparation, could enable the facile and versatile syntheses of functional HNCs. By controlling the growth kinetics, the MOFs crystals (STU-1) are readily engineered into different shapes with designated styles of crystalline inhomogeneity. A subsequent one-step pyrolysis of these MOFs with intraparticle difference can induce a simultaneous self-hollowing and carbonization process, thereby producing various functional HNCs including yolk-shell polyhedrons, hollow microspheres, mesoporous architectures, and superstructures. Superior to the existing methods, this synthetic strategy relies only on the complex nature of single-component MOFs crystals without involving any other constituents and tedious operations, making it convenient, efficient, and easy to scale up. An ultra-stable Na-ion battery anode is demonstrated by the HNCs with extraordinary cyclability (93% capacity retention over 8000 cycles), highlighting a high level of functionality of the HNCs.

Abstract:Abstract Exceptionally large surface area and well-defined nanostructure are both critical in the field of nanoporous carbons for challenging energy and environmental issues. The pursuit of ultrahigh surface area while maintaining definite nanostructure remains a formidable challenge because extensive creation of pores will undoubtedly give rise to the damage of nanostructures, especially below 100 nm. Here we report that high surface area of up to 3,022 m 2 g −1 can be achieved for hollow carbon nanospheres with an outer diameter of 69 nm by a simple carbonization procedure with carefully selected carbon precursors and carbonization conditions. The tailor-made pore structure of hollow carbon nanospheres enables target-oriented applications, as exemplified by their enhanced adsorption capability towards organic vapours, and electrochemical performances as electrodes for supercapacitors and sulphur host materials for lithium–sulphur batteries. The facile approach may open the doors for preparation of highly porous carbons with desired nanostructure for numerous applications.

Abstract:Hollow microporous organic nanospheres (H-MONs) are prepared by using polylactide-b-polystyrene diblock copolymers (PLA-b-PS) as the precursor via a hyper-cross-linking mediated self-assembly strategy, in which the hyper-cross linking PS block forms the microporous organic shell framework, and the degradable PLA block produces the hollow mesoporous core structure. The formation mechanism, morphology, and porosity parameters of the resulting H-MONs are systematically investigated. Moreover, based on the hyper-cross-linking generated rigid microporous organic frameworks, hollow microporous carbon nanospheres (H-MCNs) can be achieved by further pyrolysis progress. The obtained H-MCNs as electrode materials of a supercapacitor exhibit excellent electrochemical performance with specific capacitances of up to 145 F g(-1) at 0.2 A g(-1), with almost no capacitance loss even after 5000 cycles at 10 A More especially, H-MONs can be further act as "nanoreactors" for the synthesis of Fe3O4 nanoparticles within hollow cores to construct magnetic core-shell Fe3O4@H-MONs nanocomposite materials. Our strategy represents a new avenue for the preparation of hollow morphology-controlled microporous organic polymers with various potential applications.

Abstract:This paper reports the fabrication of a new micro/nano carbon architecture array which owns the characteristics of inner-porous, desired conductivity and large effective surface area. The micro/nano inner-porous carbon structures were fabricated for the first time, with ordinary and cost-effective processes, including photolithography, oxygen plasma etching and pyrolysis. Firstly, micro/nano hierarchical photoresist structures array was generated through photolithography and oxygen plasma etching processes. By introducing a critical thin-film spin-coating step, and followed with carefully pyrolyzing process, the micro/nano photoresist structures were converted into innerporous carbon architectures with good electric connection which connected the carbon structures array together. Probably the inner-porous property can be attributed to the shrinkage difference between positive thin film and negative photoresist structures during pyrolyzing process. It is demonstrated that the simple method is effective to fabricate inner-porous carbon structures with good electric connection and the carbon structures can be used as electrochemical electrodes directly and without the addition of other pyrolysis or film coating processes. The electrochemical property of the carbon structures has been explored by cyclic voltammetric measurement. Compared with solid carbon microstructures array, the cyclic voltammetry curve of inner-porous carbon structures shows greatly enhanced current and improved charge-storage capability, indicating great potential in micro energy storage devices and bio-devices.

Abstract:Controllable fabrication of mesoporous carbon nanoparticles (MCNs) with tunable pore structures is of great interest, due to the remarkable effect of pore structure on electrochemical performance of the materials. However, it has remained a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate the controlled synthesis of MCNs with tunable closed pore structures via a silica-assisted coassembly strategy, which employs polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymers as soft template, phenolic resol and tetraethyl orthosilicate as carbon and silica precursors, respectively. Through simply varying the sequential cross-linking of the silica and carbon precursors or the copolymer composition, novel MCNs with alluring spherical, hollow-hoop-structured, or yolk-shell-like closed mesopores are tunably prepared. In particular, serving as cathode materials of lithium-sulfur batteries, the resultant silica-hybridized MCNs with the exceptional hollow-hoop mesopores and a moderate sulfur-loading content of 46 wt % exhibit top-level electrochemical performance. This study opens an avenue for tunable construction of mesoporous particles with closed pores and provides clues for the effect of pore geometry on the electrochemical performance of porous cathode materials for lithium-sulfur batteries.
