Abstract:Two disinfectants, sodium hypochlorite and peracetic acid( PAA),were used to treat sludge from a membrane bioreactor treating hospital wastewater. Both disinfectants were effective for killing total bacteria, total coliforms and faecal coliforms in the MBR sludge, and sodium hypochlorite performed slightly better than PAA. When the mixed liquor suspended solids( MLSS) were 6 000 mg / L, the contact time was 1 h,and the dosage of the two disinfectants was more than 200 mg / L,the logarithm removal rate of total bacteria and total coliforms was no longer increased significantly with the increase of the disinfectant dosage, and the logarithm removal rate of faecal coliforms was greater than that of total bacteria and that of total coliforms, indicating that total bacteria and total coliforms were more resistant to the disinfectants than faecal coliforms. The disinfection efficiency of sodium hypochlorite and PAA mainly occurred in the first 10 min, later the disinfection efficiency of PAA still rose and that of sodium hypochlorite changed little when using large dosage of two disinfectants. The disinfection reaction of sodium hypochlorite was quicker than that of PAA,but the consumption of sodium hypochlorite was larger than that of PAA.
