Abstract:Four soil sequences of stagnic anthrosols, including Fe-accumuli-, Fe-leachi-, Hapli-, and Gleyi-groups, with different land use were collected from Zhejiang province for studying the changes in iron and manganese oxides and their relative genetic characteristics of stagnic anthrosols after conversion of paddy fields to upland(vegetable land and nursery land). Each of sequences consisted of two or three soil profiles varying in land use, incluing rice field, vegetable land, and nursery land. Both field morphologic observation and chemical characterization were applied to study the changes. The results showed that, after several years of conversion from paddy field to vegetable or/and nursery land, anthrostagnic soil moisture regime in stagnic anthrosols disappeared and turned into aquic soil moisture regimes. Meanwhile, redox features of anthrostagnic epipedon and hydragric horizon formed under former anthrostagnic cultivation were also altered. Totally, changes of redox features in anthrostagnic epipedon were greater than those in hydragric horizon. The changes in Fe and Mn new growth were greater than those in Fe and Mn chemical components, and the changes of amorphous and organically complex Fe and Mn oxides were those in free and total forms of Fe and Mn. After conversion of paddy field to upland, amorphous, organically complex and water soluble Fe and Mn oxides and their activity in the soils significantly decreased, and abudance of root channel coated with rust mottling and blood-like iron mottling in anthrostagnic epipedon was gradually decreased, and finally disappeared.
