Abstract:Objective To investigate the manifestation and the cause of protrusion deformity of the second and/or third costal cartilages after sternal elevation operation. Methods Five children (male 3, female 2) aging from 4 to 15.2 years with the second and/or third costal cartilages protrusion deformity after sternal elevation were analysed. Results The incidence was 3.29% . The time of the deformity appearance ranged from 10 to 23 months (average 14.8 months) postoperatively. The lateral chest radiography showed the thorax was slight flat. One patient underwent the deformed cartilage excision, the other 4 were continued to follow up. Conclusions The protrusion is a common deformity after sternal elevation operation. It may be related to the growth center damage of the costochondral junction. Avoiding damaging the growth center during operation might have some effects on prevention.
