Abstract:Context-adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) is chosen by H.264 video coding standard as entropy codec. To the difference coefficients, CAVLC defines many tables and uses the different tables dynamically for higher coding efficiency, but complicated code-tables result in higher computation. So a high performance-decoding algorithm using a new variable step-length group approach is proposed for H.264 coefficient tables in this paper. Through analyzing the structure of code-tables and statistic characteristic of code matching, the similar prefix codes are classified into one group to avoid the full-tree search process. The computer simulation shows that the proposed algorithm can enhance the whole decoding speed 3 times faster than full search algorithm, and if the bitrate is higher, the result is better.

Abstract: Based on thorough analysis of coding and decoding methods of CAVLC in H.264, this paper proposes two methods, sub-table method and hybrid method from binary tree and sub table, to improve the normal table look-up decoding efficiency implement-ed in reference code. Sub-table method splits the original table into several small ones for improving search efficiency, and binary tree & sub table hybrid method employs binary tree within each sub table. The testing result shows that these two methods can pro-vide 1.7 and 3 times higher speed individually compared with the original one at the cost of only a little memory space.

Abstract:In this paper, a real-time H.264/AVC baseline profile decoder is implemented on independent platform. Computationally intensive modules in the reference decoder are optimized for various hardware platforms. Especially, a fast group-based CAVLC entropy decoding algorithm is provided in detail, and several strategies are discussed from software optimization opinion. The experiments show that the speed of our developed software-based decoder is 3 times faster than that of the H.264/AVC reference decoder. The maximum decoding speed of 74 fps for CIF sequence is achieved on Intel Pentium 4 processor, with the same video quality as the reference decoder. © 2005 IEEE.
An Improved Method for Scalable Video Coding at Low Bit Rates

Abstract:Scalable video coding (SVC) now is becoming one extension part of the H.264/AVC standard. The bandwidth of video transmission systems is different, and the terminal units of video communication are diverse, so the SVC will be more popular because of its scalability in coding different picture size, frame rate and bit rate. However, the flexibility of SVC can't solve the conflict between the bit rate and the video quality, especially in the very low bit rate condition. In this paper, we describe a new approach to deal with this problem. We downsample the layer with high resolution, and then code the different layers with SVC. Finally, we upsample the high layer data in the decoder. Experiments show that this method can achieve better subjective quality in the low bit rate condition.

Abstract:In general, context-based adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) decoding in H.264/AVC standard requires frequent access to the unstructured variable length coding tables (VLCTs) and significant memory accesses are consumed. Heavy memory accesses will cause high power consumption and time delays, which are serious problems for applications in portable multimedia devices. We propose a method for high-efficiency CAVLC decoding by using a program instead of all the VLCTs. The decoded codeword from VLCTs can be obtained without any table look-up and memory access. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves 100% memory access saving and 40% decoding time saving without degrading video quality. Additionally, the proposed algorithm shows a better performance compared with conventional CAVLC decoding, such as table look-up by sequential search, table look-up by binary search, Moon's method, and Kim's method. Abstract:A mixed hardware/software architecture for CABAC decoding in H.264/AVC is proposed in this paper. For the purpose of flexibility, ctxldx calculation process is implemented by software, while others are implemented by hardware. An optimized parallel decoding architecture that allows decoding two binary symbols at one clock cycle is designed to enhance overall decoding performance. An efficient scheme of accessing context models is presented. Experimental results show that the proposed architecture improves the decoding performance by 20% compared to conventional scheme. The proposed design can achieve HDTV 1080i video processing requirement when operated at 140 MHz.

Abstract:In this paper, the decode flow of the H.264 decoder has been introduced,and the process of the entropy coder in the decoder has been analyzed. An optimize of deviding blocks to lessen the searching range has also been brought forward, so that the decoding speed of processing the entropy coder is greatly increased.

Abstract:CABAC(Context-based Adaptive Binary Arithmetic coding) is an efficient entropy codec which adopt by H.264.It has a better compression rate than others,such like CAVLC,but harder to implement.This paper gives out an implementation of one-cycle CABAC decoder base on the previous work[1].The critical paths are improved by table replacing,branch prediction,logic moving and inverter optimization;the area is also reduced by registers redesigning.The decoder is typed out,test chip achieves a decoding rate of 250Mbin/s @1.03mW and reduces 46% area consuming comparing with the previous implementation.
A Memory and Speed Efficient CAVLC Decoder

Abstract:A memory and speed efficient CAVLC (context adaptive variable length coding) decoder for H.264/AVC baseline profile is proposed. Because the CAVLC consists of a kind of bit-level operations, general processor (like RISC or MIPS) and DSP incorporating multiple parallel arithmetic units (like SIMD or VLIW) are ineffective to decode it. Though the dedicated hardwires are very effective to decode the CAVLC, they are expensive and not programmable. Also, the size of the CAVLC lookup table is more than 400 bytes. Demand for highly flexible and fast implementations and lower memory size for CAVLC decoding is rising nowadays. The four instructions--ShowBits, GetBits, FlushBits and LeadingBits, are designed after the exploiting of the functions coverage. In order to reduce the codewords matching miss and the lookup table size, a new grouping, remainder generation method and a merged lookup table (LUT) are used; and the specific group decoding instruction GroupDecoding is also presented. In summary, a based instruction set level acceleration with the codewords group partition hardware architecture is proposed to speed up the CAVLC decoding. Based on those instructions and the hardware platform, the CAVLC decoding can be significantly accelerated compared with the method in H.264 reference software. Simulation results show that the architecture is sufficient for the CAVLC decoding of 30 frames HDTV (1902 x 1080 pixels) per second.
Novel Algorithm for Context-Adaptive Variable Length Coding

Abstract:A novel algorithm for entropy coding was introduced to code block after discrete cosine transform and quantization in conventional video compression. The algorithm was based on context-adaptive variable length coding(CAVLC) of H.264.Level and run were coded thus separately using inerratic code tables.All code words could be obtained through a few simple calculations avoiding the look-up table,which substantially reduced random-access memory(RAM) requirement at encoder or decoder systems. The algorithm selected different code tables according to the known coding information,thus ensuring the context-adaptive performance.Three ways were adopted to code run according to the number of zero coefficients in block,which improved the compression efficiency.Simulation results show that the algorithm achieves excellent performance of compression in various coding conditions.

Abstract:This paper presents a memory-efficient CAVLC decoding architecture for H.264/AVC. In the proposed architecture, not only the memory space is reduced for decoding the syntax elements such as coeff token, total zero, and run before, but also the decode efficiency is improved. After the analysis of the decoding principle of the CAVLC, we simplify the coeff-token VLD table and propose a new coeff-token VLD based on arithmetic operation and the look-up table combination architecture. The run-before VLD can used the same principle as the proposed coeff-token VLD. Otherwise, the proposed scheme also adope the zero block skipping technique and multiple symbols decoding scheme when decoding SignTrail. The simulation results show that our system can run at I68MHz clock frequency and the average cycles for decoding one macro-block is 136 cycles. The proposed architecture can achieves an approximate 39-53% savings in memory access without video quality degrading.

The AVS-M decoder is redesigned according to wm2.5a reference code, and a few methods of optimization about memory, structure and algorithm are given. Abstract:H.264/AVC is the latest international video coding standard, which provides a superior coding efficiency, compared with MPEG-4 and other previous standards. Context Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding (CABAC) was adopted by H.264/AVC and plays a very important role in improving the video coding efficiency. However, the coding speed of CABAC is restricted by high computational complexity, which becomes a major bottleneck in many applications. According to the analysis of the CABAC coding flow and its computational complexity, an effective accelerating CABAC algorithm based on adaptive probability estimation update (APU-CABAC) to improve its coding speed is proposed. Instead of every binary symbol's coding, the probability estimation update part in APU-CABAC is done after every packet. In addition, the packet size is adaptively adjusted according to the comparison of the symbol changing frequency coefficient of the last and current packets. Experimental results show that APU-CABAC provides a substantial improvement in the coding speed of CABAC while coding efficiency declines only a little.

Abstract:Arithmetic coding-decoding is an efficient method to compress and decompress symbols of unequal probability.However,it takes the DSP much time on calculating and forces the DSP to burden large amount of jumping operation for which the pipeline architecture of DSP is not suitable.An improved method is proposed to realize arithmetic coding and decoding.Querying the table,the DSP not only reduces the amount of judgment and jumping operation but also saves the calculation time.This improved method also reduces the hardware requirement of DSP and makes DSP easier to fulfill the arithmetic coding-decoding.

Abstract:The H.264/AVC design adopts a multidirectional spatial prediction model to reduce spatial redundancy, where neighboring pixels are used as a prediction for the samples in a data block to be encoded. In this paper, a recursive prediction scheme and an enhanced (block-matching algorithm BMA) prediction scheme are designed and integrated into the state-of-the-art H.264/AVC framework to provide a new intra coding model. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the coding efficiency can be on average increased by 0.27 dB with comparison to the performance of the conventional H.264 coding model.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a novel intra prediction coding scheme for H.264/AVC. Based on our proposed minimum distance prediction (MDP) scheme, the optimal reference samples for predicting the current pixel can be adaptively updated corresponding to different video contents. The experimental results show that up to 2 dB and 1 dB coding gains can be achieved with the proposed method for QCIF and CFF sequences respectively.

Abstract:Compared to the CAVLC in H.264/AVC, CAVLC in HEVC has been improved much. One mechanism that contributes to the improvement is adaptive code word swapping based on previous coded symbol in the early design of HEVC. However, such a instantly swapping strategy often makes a wrong estimation of the real statistics and may lead to inefficient coding that may even worse than without adaptation. In this paper, we analyze potential loss caused by instantly swapping and propose a counter-based adaptation scheme to further improve the entropy coding efficiency. We discuss the bit-depth of those counters that achieves a trade-off between the adaptation capability and a good estimation of the statistics. The proposed scheme introduces a sum counter for each code table and a counter for each code. The sum counter determines when to shift all the counters to prevent overflow and make sure symbols far away influence less. The experimental results show that the counter based algorithm brings about 0.7% bits saving compared with the instantly swapping adaptation algorithm. Compared with the CAVLC without adaptation, the performance gain of the counter adaptation algorithm is about 4.0% bits saving. A variant of the proposed counter-based adaptation has been adopted by HEVC design.

Abstract:Variable length code is an integral component of many international standards on image and video compression. Recently, context-based adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) is adopted by the emerging JVT (also called H.264 in ITU, and AVC in MPEG-4). In this paper, we describe a novel architecture for CAVLC decoder, including a coeff_token decoder, level decoder, total_zeros decoder and run_before decoder. Together with a barrel shifter and controller, the pipeline architecture can decode every syntax element in one clock cycle. Therefore, it is very suitable for video applications that require high throughput.
