A General Comparative Study of Chinese and Western Politics

Abstract:Politics, a product of human thinking and social activity, has developed through different paths in China and the West. In terms of the tradition of politics, there have existed in the West two major traditions, namely, democratic politics and monarchic politics, related by continuity, and characterized by negation. There has been basically only one tradition in China, as long as the ancient Chinese civilization, continuous and undisrupted, displaying a tendency of continuity. In other words, Western politics has developed in a state of competition, whereas Chinese politics has developed in a non-antagonistic state. It is this different mode of development that has led to the different characteristics between Chinese and Western politics in the scope of study, methodology, theoretical representation, practical function as well as the relationship between politics and religion. Under the domination of these characteristics, Chinese and Western politics have entered a state of conflict and integration once they were confronted in modern history.
