The Origin of Movable Type Printing

Abstract:This article investigates the origin of movable type in both Asia and Europe. During the Song Dynasty Bi Sheng invented movable type printing. This article argues that the reasons why movable type did not advance and spread in printing by replacing with the woodblock printing in China are not aesthetic preference,lack of ink technology,and / or high fixed cost,but economically calculation-based choice.Following the principles of cost-balance and preferring to do easy work rather than hard work,the shortage of workers cutting a woodblock made movable type chosen in Korea. It was very possible that the information on movable type printing in China and Korea diffused into Europe. Inspired by woodblock printing,it was also very possible that people using alphabetic character invented movable type printing,at that time,there was a high demand of books and documents in Europe. With the lead types,Gutenberg' s movable-type printing system had special advantages over other movable-type printing systems. Book printing market in China had two supporting points: the imperial power and society,and it was monopolized by aristocracy in Korea; in Europe,however,from the beginning of the book printing,there was a strong commercial nature. Merchant,commodity,freeman,voluntary organizations,the spread of ideas and the formation of the mechanism of early capitalism all together resulted in the fascinating consequences of Gutenberg ' s movable-type printing in Europe.
