Abstract:AIM: To investigate the effects of irbesartan on malondialdehyde and superoxide dismuase in diabetic rats. METHODS: Forty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: control group, diabetic group, irbesartan group and captopril group. At the end of 12 wk, the rats were killed. Urine volume, body weight, kidney weight/body weight, plasma glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin A (HbAlc), urinary β_2-microglobulin(β_2-MG), urinary albumin excretion rate(UAR), creatinine clearance(Ccr), levels of malondialdehyde(MDA) and activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD) in plasma and renal tissues were measured. RESULTS: At the end of 12 wk, urine volume, kidney weight/body weight, plasma glucose, HbAlc, UAR, Ccr, urinary β_2-MG excretion, MDA levels of blood and renal tissue in diabetic rats were significantly higher than those of the control group, while the body weights were much lower than those of the control group (P0.05). UAR, Ccr, urinary β_2-MG and MDA of serum and renal tissue in rats of irbesartan and captopril groups were significantly less than those of diabetic group(P0.05). SOD activity of serum and renal tissue in rats of irbesartan and captopril groups were significantly higher than those of diabetic group(P0.05). CONCLUSION: Irbesartan can delay the progress of renal function injury in diabetic rats. And the mechanism may be that irbesartan can reduce the MDA levels and improve SOD activity in diabetic rats.
