Abstract:This is a comprehensive review on the chemical cleaning techniques available for the conservation of historic stone relics.This research discusses principles for cleaning,different types of pollutants,chemical cleaning technologies and their correlation with other special cleaning methods,the main principles of chemical cleaning methods and examples of their application,plaster cleaning technologies and so on.Some examples of collaborative research work with Zhejiang University are presented.The review will provide some ideas for Chinese researchers in stone conservation.

Abstract:This research was conducted as part of the National Technology Support Project 'Research on the cleaning of harmful surface residues in the stone grotto',and is prepared as a draft of 'Standard chemical cleaning procedures to clean surface pollution on immovable stone relics'.In order to get an extensive and in-depth understanding of the subject,the experiences with laboratory chemical cleaning and on-site chemical cleaning at Yungang grotto is discussed.International chemical cleaning technique requirements and processes were reviewed.Also included were preliminary field investigations,criteria for selection of cleaners,glue and attachment techniques,evaluation of results,laboratory research and on-site tests.Positive and negative factors related to the chemical cleaning of stone relics are discussed.This work,therefore,provides useful information for the development of standards for chemical cleaning of stone relics.

Abstract:Ancient mortars played a crucial role in the construction of historical architectures due to their physical and chemical compatibility with traditional building materials such as stones and bricks. Therefore, the analysis and optimization of the ancient mortar formula are significant in the restoration and preservation of historical sites. In this work, 20 mortar samples selected from five ancient stone pagodas in Zhejiang Province, China, were analyzed. The results showed that mud, lime-soil mortar, lime-sand mortar, and lime-gypsum mortar were used as binders in these pagodas. The Ca(OH)(2) / aggregate ratio ranging from 0.3 to 2.7 was usually used to prepare lime mortar. Protein and polysaccharide were also found in some samples.
EVALUATION OF THE ORGANOSILICON MATERIALS FOR ANCIENT GREY BRICKS PRESERVATION

Abstract:Grey bricks were produced manually and used as the major traditional building materials in ancient China. However, the characteristics of grey bricks make them vulnerable to water, salt and other environmental factors. Organosilicon materials have been tested as the effective protective agents for silicate based stones. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of different organosilicon materials on grey bricks by total and half immersions. The penetration depths, appearance alterations, water adsorptions, hydrophobic properties, porosities and compressive strengths were measured after the treatments. The samples were also experienced the salt solution immersion, freeze-thaw and UV aging tests to evaluate the durability of different preservation treatments. It is found that different characteristics of the organosilicon materials lead to different preservation performances, but it remains difficult to determine an appropriate material for the preservation of ancient architectures built with grey bricks, considering the consolidation performance, water resistance property and durability.

Abstract:Essential oils and their active antimicrobial components are promising in controlling the biodeterioration of outdoor stone cultural heritage, but their high volatility, hydrophobicity, and sensitivity to light, heat, and oxygen limit their practical application. To overcome the limitations of essential oils in the conservation of outdoor stone cultural heritage, we developed a sustained release system based on halloysite nanotubes. Firstly, we acid-etched the halloysite nanotubes by 4 M HCl to increase their specific surface area and pore volume, which thereby enhanced the loading capacity of halloysite nanotubes. Then, as a model active ingredient (AI), cinnamaldehyde was loaded into acid-etched halloysite nanotubes by vacuum method. A series of experiments revealed that the cinnamaldehyde loaded into acid-etched halloysite nanotubes not only improved their thermal stability but also could be slowly released into the deionized water, following Fickian diffusion. Finally, the cinnamaldehyde-loaded halloysite nanotubes were used in field experiments on Feilaifeng limestone. After a year of monitoring, the number of microorganisms on the limestone surface was greatly reduced after the treatment of cinnamaldehyde-loaded halloysite nanotubes. The cinnamaldehyde-loaded halloysite nanotubes showed great potential in controlling the biodeterioration of outdoor stone cultural heritage.

Abstract:Many exposed surfaces of stone relics were covered by grease stains by tourists' touching or leaning. The grease stains have changed the appearance of stone relics seriously, so they are always supposed to be removed. However, the stones coated with grease always keep a better look than bare ones. In this work, a series of experiments were designed to explore whether grease can protect the stones. The results of SO2 corrosion experiment showed that SO2 had a corrosion effect on sandstones in the presence of water. Whereas the samples coated with grease almost remained unchanged after the corrosion test. From the salt destruction test, it was observed that grease stone samples were also less destroyed than blank ones. It means that grease stain can prevent the attack of SO2 corrosion and salt destruction, which are the major factors of damage in Yungang Grottoes, China.

Abstract:The growth of microorganisms has increased the risk of biodeterioration of numerous cultural heritage stones, thereby considerably increasing the efforts required to preserve them. This report details a blend of biocides that can be used in various situations to prevent biological colonization. The efficacy of this biocide blend in removing algae, fungi, bacteria, lichen, and mosses has been demonstrated through chlorophyll content mea-surements, high-throughput sequencing (HTS) data, quantifying photochemical efficiency in Photosystem II (PSII), and microscopic investigations. This biocide blend can be utilized either alone or in combination with water repellents or consolidation materials. Furthermore, this biocide blend mixed along with water repellent (acrylic latex) has a durability 4.3 times higher than those of single-component biocides for controlling biological recolonization. However, the water repellent concentration should be limited to 4% to minimize any impacts on color and/or appearance of the heritage sample. Rock samples were reinforced using nano-MgO-based consol-idation materials with a maximum compressive strength of 0.532 MPa; there were no evident differences with or without treatment with the biocide blend. Meanwhile, the biocide blend notably impacted the biological control of recolonization. HTS data revealed that there was a considerable difference between the microbial species compositions and community structures before and after biocide treatment. Specifically, the general species (Proteobacteria and Epistylidae) replaced the specialist species (Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyta and Ascomycetes) on the stone surface. Importantly, the treated stone revealed its original hue. These results suggest that this biocide blend can significantly influence biological control on cultural heritage materials.

Abstract:Abstract Metal cultural relics are witnesses to the development of human history and civilization, containing rich value and connotation. Metal cultural relics have existed in the natural environment for hundreds and thousands of years and are facing severe corrosion problems, urgently requiring protection. Cleaning is the primary task of protection for metal cultural relics. Laser cleaning technology has attracted the interest of cultural relics scholars because of non-abrasive, non-contact, high efficiency and applicability to various materials. In order to enhance the understanding and application of laser cleaning technology on metal cultural relics, this paper provides a comprehensive review of the research advancements regarding the history and mechanism of laser cleaning technology, the corrosion mechanism of different metal cultural relics (copper relics, iron relics, silver relics, gold relics), as well as the application achievements of laser cleaning for metal cultural relics. The present study discusses the key problems and the development prospects of laser cleaning technology of metal cultural relics. Ultimately, the article will provide new ideas for the research and practice for the cleaning and protection of metal cultural relics.
Quantification of surface changes and volume losses of selected rock types due to different cleaning processes

Abstract:The restorative cleaning of natural stones has a special significance for the preservation of important cultural assets or the slowing of their deterioration. Organisms such as fungi, lichens or mosses, but also emission dirt such as soot soften and otherwise damage both the surface and the internal structure of the building stone. In order to quantify the effects and in particular the abrasiveness of selected cleaning methods, cleaning experiments were carried out on six different naturally and artificially weathered rocks using cold water under high pressure, hot water under high pressure as well as hot-water steam. The types of rocks studied include marble, limestone, granite, sandstone and tuff. Surface changes in roughness and topography were quantified using two surface-sensitive methods: confocal microscopy as well as 3D shadow triangulation. The two high-pressure cleaning methods were found to have a significantly stronger abrasive effect than steam cleaning when the distances were too small. The cleaning performance, which was compared using biologically weathered samples, was lowest for steam cleaning. However, the high temperatures of the steam also permanently eliminate much of the biological matter on and under the surface, as observed in the field test. The results presented should make it possible for the conservator to assess, which cleaning procedures to use for the different rock varieties depending on the degree of weathering.

Abstract:It is sometimes necessary to clean gilt statues to restore their appearance so as to coordinate with similar statues.However,there are risks of damaging the object's surface and of leaving residues on the object using traditional mechanical and chemical cleaning methods.Cleaning a gilt statue by using an advanced laser cleaning technology was pesented.A method using a vertical laser through liquid membrane was employed to clean a gilt bronze statue.The laser light parameters were: λ,1064nm,power,155 ~ 165,Qdiv10,and an energy density in the range 0.30 ~ 0.50J / cm2.After cleaning,the contour lines of the body and face of the statue became much clearer,with the statue having the sheen of gilt.The ancient handicraft techniques were fully revealed.The cleaning effect was evaluated by visual inspection and three dimensional microscopic examinations.The laser cleaning method has the advantages of high efficiency,safety and controllability.This experiment confirmed that laser cleaning is compatible with this batch of gilt bronze statues,and provides a useful reference for cleaning other gilt bronze objects.

It has the characteristics of non-contact, environmental protection, high efficiency, flexibility, energy saving and wide application range. Compared with mechanical friction cleaning, chemical corrosion cleaning, ultrasonic cleaning, dry ice cleaning and other technologies, it has obvious advantages. At present, laser cleaning technology has been widely used in the fields of aerospace body paint removal, cultural relics sample cleaning, mold and mechanical parts product cleaning, mainly used for paint treatment, rust removal, oil removal and particles. Abstract:Ceramic cultural relics are an essential part of China's historical and cultural heritage. Binders such as epoxy resin adhesive are often used in the repair of ceramic artifacts. After long-term placement, these binders lose their bonding function, so they need to be cleaned so that new binders can be used to continue repairing the ceramic samples. In this paper, laser cleaning technology is combined with the protection of ceramic cultural relics. Try using nanosecond pulsed laser cleaning machine to clean epoxy on the ceramic surface. In this paper, we use laser confocal high power microscope to observe and compare the cleaning effect of adhesive, and explore the best cleaning parameters. According to the control variable method, the three influencing parameters of laser power, scanning speed, and cleaning parameters were changed to control the cleaning degree of epoxy resin. It was observed that when the scanning speed was 500mm/s, the laser power was 35W, and the number of cleaning times was 29, the epoxy resin and contaminants on the ceramic surface were cleaned entirely without damaging the base. When the laser power is increased or the processing times are raised, the removal rate of epoxy resin on the surface of the substrate increases, but the substrate the substrate will be damaged. Therefore, this group of tests is the best combination of cleaning parameters.
Toward a Non-Invasive Cleaning of the Wall Painting Using Polyelectrolyte Hydrogel

Abstract:Developing advanced cleaning systems for the removal of unwanted layers from painted surfaces is still a challenging issue that needs to be addressed in the field of cultural heritage. In this work, we proposed the use of novel polyelectrolyte hydrogels prepared via free radical polymerization and freeze-thaw methods. Zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) was cross-linked with methylacryloyloxyethyl trimethylammonium (DMC) through covalent bonding to yield zwitterionic polyelectrolyte poly(SBMA-co-DMC) (PSD). Introducing PSD into the polyvinyl alcohol/carboxymethyl chitosan (PVA/CMC) hydrogel network enhanced the intermolecular electrostatic interactions and changed the porous structure and swelling behaviors, thus leading to improved mechanical properties. The adsorption ability of the PVA/CMC/PSD polyelectrolyte hydrogels toward dyes (rhodamine B and congo red) and metal ions (Cu2+ and K+) varied with increasing amounts of PSD, which could be attributed to cationic PSD tuning the net charges in the hydrogel. The cleaning effectiveness of the PVA/CMC/PSD polyelectrolyte hydrogels was assessed on wall painting mock-ups coated with soil, red paint, and soluble salts, using microscopic and spectroscopic analyses. The results showed that the hydrogel adhered to rough surfaces and removed unwanted substances effectively without leaving determinable residues, providing a possible safe and efficient method for the cleaning of important artifacts.

Abstract:Cultural heritage assets constitute a fundamental socioeconomic resource, but the actual works of art need to be maintained, counteracting degradation processes, to transfer these benefits to future generations. In particular, the removal of soil, aged coatings, and vandalism/overpaints is one of the most needed interventions in art restoration. Traditional cleaning methodologies, based on classical solution and polymer chemistry, only grant limited control of the cleaning interventions, with the risk of affecting the original components of the artifacts, and often involving the use of toxic or non-environmentally friendly compounds. Alternatively, materials science, colloids, and soft matter have provided valuable and safe solutions in the last decades. This review provides a selection of the most recent and advanced methodologies for the wet cleaning of works of art, spanning from nanostructured cleaning fluids (microemulsions, surfactants swollen micelles) to physical and chemical gels. The new methodologies work on different physico-chemical mechanisms, such as processes for detaching/dewetting, to selectively remove the unwanted layers in sustainable and cost-effective interventions. The best performing systems, like microemulsions confined in "twin-chain" polyvinyl alcohol gels, have been assessed in the cleaning of masterpieces such as works by Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Roy Lichtenstein. Particular attention is dedicated to "green" chemistry systems, using low-toxicity solvents or bio-based/waste materials to build gel networks. Finally, current trends and future perspectives are given, showing that advanced systems for art cleaning link with transversal fields of crucial importance even beyond Cultural heritage conservation, e.g., detergency, tissue engineering, drug-delivery, food industry and cosmetics.

Abstract:Both conservation and intervention methods must be compatible with each other and appropriate for the original building materials. Therefore, the characterization of historic building materials is indispensable for investigating chemical composition, micro-structure and morphological features to study the current condition, environmental influence and change mechanism due to natural aging or man-made decay processes. Given the great variety of chemicals which can be analyzed, complex problems related to architectural heritage materials are investigated via optimized methodologies. Among the existing techniques, optical microscopy (OM) is an inexpensive and dominating tool to obtain preliminary information on complex samples. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) can provide real three-dimensional topographies showing sample surface properties. Electron microscopes combined with energy dispersion X-ray analysis (EM-EDX) are the instruments specifically developed to acquire images of target materials at high magnification. Infrared and Raman spectroscopies are frequently used to characterize inorganic and organic compounds. Thermal analysis can rapidly and accurately measure changes in crystalline structure, dehydration and decomposition. X-ray based technologies have a wide range of applications as follows. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is one of the most frequently used techniques for elemental analysis. X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a fast and inexpensive technique for the characterization of man-made and natural materials. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is applied to quantify the valence and electronic levels of specific elements. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful technique for detecting the electronic structure of matter. UV–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy is also of great importance in architectural heritage, which can reveal different physicochemical mechanisms causing color. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) can effectively eliminate the pollution on the surface and detect the internal elements of the target material. Ion beam analysis can quantify trace elements with high sensitivity. Mass-based techniques are mainly applied to identify unknown organic substances at the molecular level. This review describes some classical applications of individual techniques and provides scientific support for scientists and engineers to make decisions in the context of architectural heritage.

Abstract:The surface quality of murals degraded seriously after long-term contamination. The existing cleaning methods are challenging to remove these contaminants without damaging the mural surface. The objective of this study was to eliminate the contaminants on the surface of murals by nanosecond pulsed laser irradiation. We adopted the apparatus of the Nd: YAG laser with a Q-switch (wavelengths λ = 355 nm and 1064 nm) to study the cleaning characteristic of the mural. The time-resolved imaging of the laser interaction process between contaminants and mural surfaces was visualized through pump–probe detection technology to elucidate cleaning mechanisms. Results showed that laser cleaning was suitable for cleaning the soot and dust contaminants on the surface of white lime, but it generated irreversible damage to the surface when eliminating these contaminants on the pigment layer. The control method of damage suppression and the safe range of laser parameters for different surface materials was obtained by investigating acoustic wave propagation and statistics of ejecting particles. The element analysis was carried out by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, which indicated that laser irradiation did not affect the chemical characteristics of the mural surface. This investigation provides a comprehensive understanding of laser cleaning, which is significant to developing cultural heritage protection technology.

Abstract:We explore femtosecond laser cleaning of materials used in the construction of historic monuments, such as stone and steel covered in typical contaminants caused by harsh environments that may be found in urban areas. We address the cleaning of these materials from a conservation perspective, taking as examples the preservation and cleaning of iconic structures such as the steel and the granite of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Hawkesbury sandstone, a popular building material of a variety of monuments in Sydney (Australia), Makrana marble taken from the Soami Bagh Samadh temple of Agra in India, and also graffiti removal. We demonstrate that femtosecond laser pulses can clean a range of different contaminants such as biofilm, environmental soiling, rust, and spray paints, while preserving the integrity of the underlying substrates. Femtosecond laser cleaning is a fast and effective method and a safer alternative to lasers with longer pulse durations for the preservation of historic monuments.
