Epidemiological Investigation of Kawasaki Disease in Yunnan Province

Abstract:ObjectiveTo investigate the incidence,distribution and epide mi ological characteristics of Kawasaki disease in Yunnan Province.Method The epidemic questionnaires of Kawasaki disease jointly made by Japan an d China were adopted.The questionnaires were filled by the departments of pediat rics of 126 hospitals above county level,and mother and child health care hospi t als in Yunnan Province.The children diagnosed as Kawasaki disease from January 1 997 to December 2001 were chosen as the subjects.ResultsThe re turn rate of questionnaires was 85.7%,594 cases of the affected children had bee n reported during the period of five years.The incidence rate per 100000 childen were 4 45.The ratio male to female was 1 50 to 1(356/238).The majority of chi ld ren with Kawasaki disease were under five years old (86 2%).Most of the affecte d children(398,67 0%)were from city.There were 45 cases(7 6%)who were ethnic mi no rity.Among 399 cases,114 of them had sequela of heart.No death case was reported .Four cases(0 7%)relapsed.ConclusionThe incidence of Kawasaki disease in Yunnan Province are significantly lower than that of Japan and appro aching that of some provinces of China.However,the number of the children with s equela of heart is higher than that of Japan and some provinces of China.The doc tors working at grassroots hospitals should have acquaintance with Kawasaki dise ase and improve their level of diagnosis and treatment.
