Abstract:Using numerical calculation the distribution of pump wave, Stokes wave and sound wave in optical fiber during the whole SBS process can be achieved, which is useful to analyze the transient SBS processing and the influence of SBS reflectivity and threshold from the fiber length, pump pulse width. Hereby a new type of fiber phase conjugator with adjustable core radius is shown in this paper.

Abstract:In this paper, the pulse waveform of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The variations of SBS pulse waveform with pump parameters, structural parameters and medium parameters are experimentally investigated with a Nd∶YAG Q-switched laser，and numerically simulated using SBS theory model. The theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the experimental results. The results indicate that modulation of pulse waveform is difficult to realige with low pump energy, short focal length, long lens-cell distance and long phonon life time. The influence of the pump parameters, structural parameters and medium parameters on SBS pulse waveform is discussed extensively.

Abstract:Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) as a phase conjugate mirror is successfully used in high power solid state laser system due to its self adaptive character and his simple step without optical damage in SBS medium. In oscillator and in amplifier with the SBS phase conjugate mirror the output beam quality has been improved. The beam quality with the diffraction limit and high power were obtained.

Abstract:A novel optical parametric oscillator with KTP as medium crystal inside a Nd:YAG phase conjugate resonator was reported. In the phase conjugate resonator, the laser beam quality is promoted by phase-conjugate mirror, which is realized by stimulated. Brillouin scattering effect, and Q-switch is generated simultaneously. The laser output at 1.57 μm with 15 mJ energy and 8 ns pulse width was obtained on this device.

Abstract:In order to improve the performance of the two-cell stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) system, this paper proposes the methods of using mixtures, which require amplifier media to have small absorption rate, and generator media to have high optical breakdown threshold and Brillouin frequency shift equal to that of the amplification media. The characteristics of the two-cell SBS system are studied experimentally by using CCl4 as amplifier medium and CCl4, C2H5OH and CCl4/C2H5OH liquid mixture as generator medium pumped by Nd:YAG Q-switched laser. The obtained results show that liquid mixture in generator cell improves the power load ability, phase conjugation fidelity, energy reflectivity (ER) and ER stability.

Abstract:Since Zel' dovich discovered the phase conjugate character or stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), there has been considerable interest in using phase conjugation to improve the beam quality of high power laser. In this paper we report our investigation of the Nd:YAG laser oscillator with a SBS cell filled with high pressure gas SF6 as the SBS nonlinear medium. The SBS cell acts at the same time as the phase conjugating mirror and as the Q-switch because of its intensity dependent reflectivity. As a result laser pulses with the energy of 100 mJ and the duration of 10 - 25 ns per pulse have been obtained. The beam profile is nearly TEM00-mode.

Abstract:According to the relationships between the chemical structure of the medium and the absorption coefficient, a series of new media with small absorption coefficients has been found, which are suited for use as the amplifier media. The stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) parameters of these media have been calculated or measured when the pump wavelength is 1.064 μm. Choosing C 2Cl 4 and C 4Cl 6 as amplifier medium and C 2H 5OH as generator medium, we investigated the performances of two-cell SBS system pumped by Nd:YAG Q-switched laser. The C 2H 5OH has a high optical breakdown threshold and the Brillouin frequency shift of C 2H 5OH is close to those of C 2Cl 4 and C 4Cl 6. The results indicate that the system has the characteristics of high power-load ability, high phase-conjugation fidelity and high energy reflectivity stability.

Abstract:We designed a pulse compressor for S-band highpower test stand at Tsinghua University. This pulse compressor is made up of a spherical resonant cavity with quality factor of 100,000 and an RF polarizer. It has the ability of compressing a pulse from 3.6 us to 300 ns with the power gain of 7. A short description of the pulse compressor is presented, together with the RF design.

Abstract:A method for synthetic aperture passive millimeter wave imaging based on stimulated Brillouin scattering(SBS) in optical fiber is proposed.In the system of the passive millimeter wave imaging,a single-sideband signal carrying the amplitude and phase information of the millimeter wave is acquired in each link.In this scheme,the single-sideband suppressed-carrier modulation of the millimeter wave signal is achieved by using SBS in fiber to suppress a sideband of the modulated millimeter wave signal and to amplify another.Apparently,this technique realizes electro-optic modulation and up-conversion of the millimeter wave.Furthermore,optical filtering and amplification of the single sideband are demonstrated.Compared with traditional up-converted approaches,the sparse aperture passive imaging based on SBS is discussed theoretically.In addition,the viability of this scheme is rigorously analyzed.Experimental results demonstrating the viability of this scheme are presented.Therefore,compared with traditional approaches,this scheme is simpler and more competitive.As the amplification of the single-sideband signal′s power,this system based on SBS could be used to achieve the image of the millimeter wave with lower power.

Abstract:In this paper,a method of choosing mixture medium in two-cell stimulated Brillouinscattering(SBS)system to improve the system performance is proposed.The Brillouin frequency shift(BFS)of mixture medium varies with the mixing ratio andthus the difference of the BFS between the two cells can be eliminated.The two-cellSBS system with acetone(C3H6O)in its generator cell and mixture liquid ofCCl4/C2Cl4 in its amplifier cell is investigated.The C3H6O has a high optical breakdown threshold and the mixture liquid of CCl4/C2Cl4 has a small absorption coeffi-cient and the same BFS as that of C3H6O when the volume fraction of CCl4 is 4%.Compared with two-cell SBS system with the same liquid(C2Cl4)or different liquid(C3H6O and C2Cl4)in generator and amplifier cell,the SBS system with mixture liq-uid(CCl4/C2Cl4)in amplifier cell and C3H6O in generator cell improves thepower-load,energy reflectivity(ER),phase conjugation(PC)fidelity and ER stabil-ity.

Abstract:The method of generating equal-amplitude spectral lines by multi-frequency phase modulation is used in stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) suppression. The spectra of three, five, seven, and eleven equal-amplitude spectral lines are obtained in experiment with flatnesses less than 0.3 dB. Theoretical research on SBS suppression shows that the threshold power after modulation is in reverse proportion to the maximum square of amplitude moduli of fundamental frequency and the nth harmonic wave. The threshold powers of three, five, seven, and eleven equal-amplitude spectral lines are improved by 5.21, 8.36, 9.39, and 10.76 dB, respectively.

Abstract:Optical phase conjugation by stimulated Brillouin scattering, excited by an inhomogeneous light field with a self-focusing strong component, has been investigated. The conjugation fraction \ensuremath{\eta} depends on the intensity ratio \ensuremath{\sigma} of the strong component to the total pump light, attaining a maximum at a certain value of \ensuremath{\sigma}. Theoretical analysis shows that a four-wave-mixing process is involved in its physical mechanism. By taking into account the effect of self-focusing, a fair agreement with experiments is obtained.

Abstract:A new method is proposed to study the properties of stimulated photorefractive backscattering and four-wave-mixing (SPB-FWM) and total-internal-reflection (TIR) self-pumped phase conjugators. The phase conjugators are simulated with external configurations using a KNSBN:Cu crystal, a plane mirror and a prism. As a result, the parameters such as beamwidth and intensity of the contra-directionally propagating pump beams for the FWM interactions in the crystal can be easily controlled. The dependence of self-pumped phase conjugation reflectivity and FWM coupling strength on these parameters of the pump beams have been studied.
Compression and Broadening of Phase-Conjugate Pulses in Photorefractive Self-Pumped Phase Conjugators

Abstract:Pulse propagation and shaping are investigated in photorefractive self-pumped phase conjugators in both transmission- and reflection-grating regimes. The dispersion properties of self-pumped phase conjugators are analyzed by taking into account both the grating dispersion and the angular dispersion. The complex transfer functions are obtained by treating the crystal as a linear dispersive medium. We show that the pulse width as a result of the self-pumped phase conjugation is much wider in the reflection regime than in the transmission regime. The experimental results are consistent with the results calculated for the transmission-grating regime, indicating that this type grating is the dominant mechanism in the case of a femtosecond self-pumped phase conjugator. Abstract:Phase conjugation with high quality can be obtained by stimulated Brillouin scattering in the focused beams' scheme, even when the in homogeneous pump light contains a self-focusing strong component. The scattered light originates from the selftrapped filament regions. The conjugation fraction η depends on the intensi ty ratio a of the strong component and the total incident light, attaining a maximum ηmax (=80%) at a certain value of σ. By taking in-tc account the effect of self-focusing on η(σ), a fair agreement with experiments is obtained.

Abstract:A novel method is demonstrated to tunably compensate dispersion effect in phase modulated radio over fiber (RoF) links using an optical carrier Brillouin processing technique, which is based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) to control the phase shift of optical carrier in the modulated lightwave signal. Since this phase shift can be dynamically tuned, frequency response can be tunably improved. Both simulation and experimental results show that a uniform frequency response ranging from 1–12 GHz with a fluctuation of less than ±1 dB can be obtained by an optimal phase shift on the optical carrier.

Abstract:Phase conjugation in degenerate four-wave mixing with a squeezed input beam is investigated. We show that the phase conjugate mode is always super-Poissonian and never squeezed, but the combination mode may be squeezed to an extent even greater than the input probe wave.

Abstract:We designed and fabricated an S-band compact pulse compressor with a single spherical resonant cavity and an RF polarizer for the S-band high power test facility at Tsinghua University. The average power gain of the pulse compressor was optimized to 5.2 with input pulse length of 3.6 μs and a compression ratio of 12. This pulse compressor will replace the existing SLED-type pulse compressor with two cylinder resonant cavities, which makes the RF system of the high-power test facility compact. The RF design, mechanical design and cold test of the pulse compressor are presented in this paper.
Study on Phase Conjugate Characteristics of the Terbium-Copper-Doped Potassium Sodium Strontium Barium Niobate Crystal

Abstract:In this paper we demonstrate the phase conjugate characteristics of a Tb:Cu:KNSBN crystal, using the self-pumped phase conjugator, the bridge double phase conjugator and the coherently induced double phase conjugator. Respectively. The experimental results show that the Tb:Cu:KNSBN crystal has high "cat" self-pumped phase conjugate reflectivity, which is 57% at incident angle of 40 degrees and input intensity of 7.6 W/cm(2), and fast response. For the bridge double phase conjugator, two mutually incoherent e-polarized input beams enter the opposite crystal faces symmetrically with an included angle of 112 degrees. We measured the maximum phase conjugate transmissivity of 65% and the maximum phase conjugate reflectivity of higher than 250%. Moreover, we found that the temporal phase conjugate output varies with which input beam being blocked before the measurement. A peak reflectivity of as high as 300% was obtained when the beam ratio is 6.5. The Tb:Cu:KNSBN crystal has also been used to implement the coherently induced double phase conjugation and phase conjugate reflectivity similar to 320 has been obtained in a very large dynamic range of beam ratios.

Abstract:The model combining power balance equations, coupling amplitude equations and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) equation is established to simulate the spectrum evolution and SBS threshold in the amplifier stage. Four typical phase modulation seeds are employed to calculate the SBS spectrum evolution in fiber amplifier. The spectrum evolution results show that the top-hat shaped spectrum seed is optimal to suppress the SBS effect and scale the SBS threshold. The SBS threshold is studied in co-pumped and counter-pumped amplifiers. Simulation results show that counter-pumped amplifier is capable of generating about 2.5 times more output than co-pumped amplifier. The results provide theoretical basis on the design and experiment of continuous wave high power narrow linewidth fiber laser.
