Abstract:This study examined whether time slack would influence the prediction of task completion time and whether need for cognition would influence prediction accuracy if time scenarios were manipulated. With a laboratory experiment in which 140 subjects were involved, two major results were obtained: (1) People expected time slack to be greater in the future than in the present, but the operation of time slack scenarios did not reduce the participants' optimism about when their tasks would be completed. Time constraint scenarios enhanced their prediction optimism. (2) Individual differences in need of cognition would influence the effects of operation of time scenarios.

Abstract:A geometric illustration of the Lorentz transformations is given. According to similarity between space and time and correspondence between a ruler and a clock, like the division number in a moving ruler, the tick number of a moving clock is independent of its relative speed and hence invariant under the Lorentz transformations. So the hand of the moving clock never runs slow but the time interval between its two consecutive ticks contracts. Thus it is Einstein's concept of slowing of the hands of moving clocks to create the clock paradox or twin paradox. Regrettably, the concept of the clock that Einstein retained is equivalent to Newton's concept of absolute time that he rejected. This is a blemish in Einstein's otherwise perfect special relativity.

Abstract:Time dilation is a difference in measured time between two clocks that either move with different velocities or experience different gravitational potentials. Both of these effects stem from the theory of relativity and are usually associated with classically defined trajectories, characterized by position, momentum, and acceleration. However, when spatial degrees of freedom are treated in a quantum way and a clock is allowed to be in a coherent superposition of either two momenta or two heights, additional quantum corrections to classical time dilation appear, called kinematic and gravitational quantum time dilations, respectively. We show that similarly to its classical counterpart, kinematic quantum time dilation is universal for any clock mechanism, while gravitational quantum time dilation is not. We also show that although both of these effects reduce to incoherent averaging of different classical time dilation contributions, there exists an additional quantum time dilation effect that has no classical analog and can be extracted from higher-order corrections to the system's Hamiltonian.

Abstract:We study the dynamical evolution of two quantum clocks interacting with a relativistic gravitational potential. We find a time dilation effect for the clocks in agreement with the gravitational time dilation as obtained from the Schwarzschild solution in General Relativity. We perform our investigation via the Page and Wootters quantum time formalism. The gravitational redshift, as emerging from our framework, is also proposed and discussed.

Abstract:The phase of matter waves depends on proper time and is therefore susceptible to special-relativistic (kinematic) and gravitational (redshift) time dilation. Hence, it is conceivable that atom interferometers measure general-relativistic time-dilation effects. In contrast to this intuition, we show: (i.) Closed light-pulse interferometers without clock transitions during the pulse sequence are not sensitive to gravitational time dilation in a linear potential. (ii.) They can constitute a quantum version of the special-relativistic twin paradox. (iii.) Our proposed experimental geometry for a quantum-clock interferometer isolates this effect.

Abstract:Culture is ubiquitous and is everywhere.As an important part of nonverbal communication,the transmission of time message also has profound cultural connotation.Different cultures have shaped different concepts of time.The differences between Chinese and western culture in philosophy,historical background and social system and so on have caused their differences in concept of time and attitude toward time,and as a result,have created different modes of time orientation.The way to deal with time and use time,to a great extent,influences the effect of cross-cultural communication between them.This article,through contrastive analyses of the cultural factors causing the differences in time concept between Chinese culture and western culture,aims at a deeper understanding of the different orientations of time,in order to increase the effectiveness of cross-cultural communication.

Abstract:The special theory of relativity has fundamentally changed our views of space and time. The relativity of simultaneity in particular, and the theory of relativity as a whole, still presents significant difficulty for beginners in the theory. The difficulty stems from the fact that the usual presentation of special relativity is based on Newtonian concepts, which are relativized and change their meaning in the course of the presentation. A better pedagogical practice, in our opinion, would be to base the presentation from the very beginning on the four-dimensional formulation of Minkowski and thus remove from the theory all the paradoxical connotations that invariably accompany the usual presentation of special relativity.

Abstract:A partially alternative derivation of the expression for the time dilation effect in a uniform static gravitational field is obtained by means of a thought experiment in which rates of clocks at rest at different heights are compared using as reference a clock bound to a free falling reference system (FFRS). Derivations along these lines have already been proposed, but generally introducing some shortcut in order to make the presentation elementary. The treatment is here exact: the clocks whose rates one wishes to compare are let to describe their world lines (Rindler's hyperbolae) with respect to the FFRS, and the result is obtained by comparing their lengths in space-time. Only at the end of the paper the corresponding GR metric is derived, to the purpose of making a comparison to the solutions of Einstein field equation. The exercise may nonetheless prove pedagogically instructive insofar as it shows that the exact result of General Relativity (GR) can be obtained in terms of physical and geometrical reasoning without having recourse to the general formalism. It also compels to deal with a few subtle points inherent in the very foundations of GR.

Abstract:The theory of relativity associates a proper time with each moving object via its world line. In quantum theory however, such well-defined trajectories are forbidden. After introducing a general characterisation of quantum clocks, we demonstrate that, in the weak-field, low-velocity limit, all "good" quantum clocks experience time dilation as dictated by general relativity when their state of motion is classical (i.e. Gaussian). For nonclassical states of motion, on the other hand, we find that quantum interference effects may give rise to a significant discrepancy between the proper time and the time measured by the clock. The universality of this discrepancy implies that it is not simply a systematic error, but rather a quantum modification to the proper time itself. We also show how the clock's delocalisation leads to a larger uncertainty in the time it measures -- a consequence of the unavoidable entanglement between the clock time and its center-of-mass degrees of freedom. We demonstrate how this lost precision can be recovered by performing a measurement of the clock's state of motion alongside its time reading.

Abstract:Experimental tests on `time dilation' began in 1938 with Ives and Stilwell's work of the transverse Doppler effect due to atoms in inertial flight. Rossi and Hall (1941) inaugurated the era of fast moving elementary particles that dominated the scene until the discovery of the Mossbauer effect (1957). This discovery suggested the use of photons emitted without recoil in crystalline solids for testing both time dilation and gravitational red shift. Finally, around 1970, Hafele and Keating dealt again with time dilation by sending macroscopic atomic clocks around the Earth. The interpretations of these experiments by experimenters have been characterized by the use of additional hypotheses not necessary for the formal development of the theories under test (the idea that all clocks measure proper time) or hypotheses completely extraneous to the theories themselves (the idea that atoms are clocks). If these assumptions are dropped, it turns out that the only experiments concerning time dilation are those performed with elementary particles in inertial flight. The historical and epistemological implications are discussed.

Abstract:The precision of optical atomic clocks is approaching a regime where they resolve gravitational time dilation on smaller scales than their own extensions. Hence, an accurate description of quantum clocks has to take their spatial extension into account. In this article, as a first step towards a fully relativistic description of extended quantum clocks, we investigate a quantized version of Einstein's light clock fixed at a constant distance from a large massive object like the Earth. The model consists of a quantum light field in a one-dimensional cavity in Schwarzschild spacetime, where the distance between the mirrors is fixed by a rigid rod. By comparing a vertical and a horizontal clock, we propose an operational way to define the clock time when the clock resolves gravitational time dilation on scales smaller than its extension. In particular, we show that the time measured by the vertical light clock is equivalent to the proper time defined at its center. We also derive fundamental bounds on the precision of these clocks for measurements of proper time and the Schwarzschild radius.

Abstract:The epitome of a causal or anti-chronological behavior would be to see a clock running backwards in time. In this essay, we point out that this is indeed possible, but there is no problem with causality. What you see is not what is really happening. Locally, causality is always respected. However, our observation should be cause for pause to astronomers and cosmologists, who strictly observe events occurring at very large distances or very long ago and certainly not locally. It can be that what you see is not what you necessarily get.

Abstract:Time plays a fundamental role in our ability to make sense of the physical laws in the world around us. The nature of time has puzzled people -- from the ancient Greeks to the present day -- resulting in a long running debate between philosophers and physicists alike to whether time needs change to exist (the so-called relatival theory), or whether time flows regardless of change (the so-called substantival theory). One way to decide between the two is to attempt to measure the flow of time with a stationary clock, since if time were substantival, the flow of time would manifest itself in the experiment. Alas, conventional wisdom suggests that in order for a clock to function, it cannot be a static object, thus rendering this experiment seemingly impossible. Here we show, with the aid of counterfactual measurements, the surprising result that a quantum clock can measure the passage of time even while being switched off, thus lending constructive support for the substantival theory of time.

Abstract:We consider a Landau theory of coupled charge and spin-density wave order parameters as a simple model for the ordering that has been observed experimentally in the La_2NiO_4 and La_2CuO_4 families of doped antiferromagnets. The period of the charge-density wave is generically half that of the spin-density wave, or equivalently the charges form antiphase domain walls in the antiferromagnetic order. A sharp distinction exists between the case in which the ordering is primarily charge driven (which produces a sequence of transitions in qualitative agreement with experiment) or spin driven (which does not). We also find that stripes with non-collinear spin order (i.e. spiral phases) are possible in a region of the phase diagram where the transition is spin driven; the spiral is circular only when there is no charge order, and is otherwise elliptical with an eccentricity proportional to the magnitude of the charge order.

Abstract:This paper identifies a potential gap between time preference and intertemporal choices such as time discounting tasks: The intertemporal choices could be partly driven by a biased perception of time and thus may not completely reveal actual time preference. To test this, we explore the causal relationship between time perception and intertemporal choices by conducting a laboratory experiment in which cognitive load is used as a stimulating instrument to induce differences in time perception. We establish that the perceived time lengths for subjects with high cognitive load are shorter than those with low cognitive load and that individuals who underestimate time appear more patient in their intertemporal choices. Mediation analyses show that time perception mediates a significant portion of cognitive load's effect on intertemporal choices. Our study thus demonstrates that time preference identified by intertemporal choices might be confounded by potentially biased time perception, calling for improving suboptimal time-related economic decisions due to an individual's misperception of how time flies.

Abstract:The thought experiment (called the clock paradox or the twin paradox)proposed by Langevin in 1911 of two observers, one staying on Earth and the other making a trip toward a star with a velocity near the light velocity is very well known for its surprising result. When the traveler comes back, he is younger that the stay on Earth. This astonishing situation deduced from the theory of Special relativity sparked a huge amount of articles, discussions and controversies such it remains a particular phenomenon probably unique in Physics. We propose to study it. First we looked for the simplest solutions when one can observe that the published solutions correspond in fact to two different versions of the experiment. It appears that the complete and simple solution of Moller is neglected for complicated methods with dubious validity. We propose to interpret this avalanche of works by the difficulty to accept the conclusions of the Special Relativity, in particular the difference in times indicated by two clocks, one immobile and the second moving and finally stopping. We also suggest that the name "twin paradox" is maybe related to some subconscious idea concerning conflict between twins as it can be found in the Bible and in several mythologies

Aspects of clock synchronization in relativistic kinematics -- a tutorial

Abstract:This tutorial, addressing physics teachers and undergraduate students, aims at clarifying some aspects of time in special relativity. In particular, time dilation is usually presented only as the well-known ratio of lab time over proper time, $R$. Above ratio is useful, e.g. for describing the decay length of an unstable particle in the lab. But essential characteristics of time dilation, missed out in many textbooks, are manifest in the differences (quadratic, absolute and relative) between lab time and proper time. After an introduction to the basics, we regard the movement of a clock over a fixed spatial distance $\Delta x$. Explicit formulae are given for $R$ and for the differences, and their behaviour as functions of the velocity is discussed and plotted. Approximate formulae are given for very slow movements. Time synchronization within an inertial system by "slowly" moving a clock over a finite distance $\Delta x$, mentioned vaguely in some textbooks, may quantitatively be comprehended by requiring the time difference to be less than the clock's time resolution. We derive explicit formulae for the maximal velocity obeying these constraints (to the best of our knowledge not presented elsewhere).

Abstract:According to relativity, the reading of an ideal clock is interpreted as the elapsed proper time along its classical trajectory through spacetime. In contrast, quantum theory allows the association of many simultaneous trajectories with a single quantum clock, each weighted appropriately. Here, we investigate how the superposition principle affects the gravitational time dilation observed by a simple clock - a decaying two-level atom. Placing such an atom in a superposition of positions enables us to analyze a quantum contribution to a classical time dilation manifest in spontaneous emission. In particular, we show that the emission rate of an atom prepared in a coherent superposition of separated wave packets in a gravitational field is different from the emission rate of an atom in a classical mixture of these packets, which gives rise to a quantum gravitational time dilation effect. We demonstrate that this nonclassical effect also manifests in a fractional frequency shift of the internal energy of the atom that is within the resolution of current atomic clocks. In addition, we show the effect of spatial coherence on the atom's emission spectrum.
