Abstract:The third-order nonlinear optical properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) films doped with charge flowable 3,7-di(piperidinyl)phenothiazin-5-ium chloride, which tested by Z-scan method with nanosecond laser beam at 532nm, are reported. Large third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities (up to 10−7esu) and high second hyperpolarizabilities (up to 10−27esu) are found. The third-order nonlinear absorptions change from reverse saturated absorptions to saturated absorptions with different percentage of the phenothiazinium dye in the poly(methyl methacrylate) films, which can be explained by the accumulation phenomenon of the phenothiazinium. The results suggest that the phenothiazinium salt is a promising material for third order non-linear applications.
Nonlinear refraction in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$ single crystals

Abstract:Hybrid lead halide perovskites, such as CH$_3$NH$_3$PbX$_3$ (X=I, Br), are direct gap semiconductors that offer many superior optoelectronic properties combined with extremely simple solution-processing fabrication methods. This makes them very attractive for use in applications like solar cells or light-emitting devices. Recently, also their nonlinear optical properties have received increased attention due to reports of high nonlinear refraction in thin films and nanoparticles. However, understanding of the underlying mechanisms is poor and limited by the lack of knowledge of fundamental parameters like the nonlinear refractive index of the bulk material. Here, we measure both nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction in a CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$ single crystal using the Z-scan technique with femtosecond laser pulses. At 1000 nm, we obtain values of 5.2 cm/GW and 9.5$\cdot$10$^{-14}$ cm$^2$/W for nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction, respectively. Sign and magnitude of the observed refractive nonlinearity are reproduced well by the two-band model. To our knowledge, these measurements mark the first characterization of nonlinear refraction in any metal halide perovskite single crystal and thus will serve as an important reference for assessing the potential of this emerging material class for nonlinear optical applications.
Topography and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Thin Films Containing Iodide-Based Hybrid Perovskites

Abstract:This article covers selected properties of organic-inorganic thin films of hybrid perovskites with the summary formulas CH3NH3MI3, where M = Pb, Cd, Ge, Sn, Zn. The paper discusses not only the history, general structure, applications of perovskites and the basics of the theory of nonlinear optics, but also the results of experimental research on their structural, spectroscopic, and nonlinear optical properties. The samples used in all presented studies were prepared in the physical vapor deposition process by using co-deposition from two independent thermal sources containing the organic and inorganic parts of individual perovskites. Ultimately, thin layers with a thickness of the order of nanometers were obtained on glass and crystalline substrates. Their structural properties were characterized by atomic force microscopy imaging. Spectroscopic tests were used to confirm the tested films' transmission quality and determine previously unknown physical parameters, such as the absorption coefficient and refractive index. Experimental results of the nonlinear optical properties were obtained by studying the second and third harmonic generation processes and using initial sample polarization in the so-called Corona poling process. The obtained experimental results allowed us to determine the second- and third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of the tested materials.
Impact of Structural Dynamics on the Optical Properties of Methylammonium Lead Iodide Perovskites

Abstract:Organolead halide perovskites have attracted a lot of attention over the recent years mostly due to their bright prospective application in photovoltaic devices. For further development, characterization of their physical properties plays a seminal role in order to gain an in‐depth understanding of these mid‐bandgap ionic semiconductors. Their unique optical and electronic properties are a result of their characteristic electronic structure. Temperature dependent optical spectroscopy, i.e., absorption and photoluminescence (PL) characterization, gives access to their electronic nature that draws strong correlations to their structural properties. Those properties include static and dynamic disorder, and defects or phase transitions, which will be demonstrated in the first part of this research view. The second part focuses on ion migration in these hybrid semiconductors, which can strongly affect the slow dynamics of optical properties. Light‐activated ions result in a number of complex processes that can lead to an increase, but also a decrease of PL intensity, or induce PL intermittency. Parameters like light intensity, crystal quality, and defect density all influence these processes, and ultimately the electronic nature of the hybrid perovskites. We will briefly summarize current achievements and point out challenges for upcoming research.

Optical Nonlinearity of MEH-PPV Thin Film

Abstract:The Z-scan technique was used to investigate the third-order optical nonlinearity of MEH-PPV and PPV thin-films. The measured magnitude of every x((3)) of the two polymers was the order of 10(-9) esu and the x((3)) of MEH-PPV was larger than that of PPV's. At the same time, the crystal orbital program was used to calculate the electronic structure of two polymers. According to our discussion, the p-(pi) conjugation between the oxygen atom and the PPV main chain in the MEH-PPV should be the one of the main reasons for MEH-PPV having the larger x((3)) value.

Abstract:By combining temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD) with temperature-dependent Raman scattering, we have characterized the structural transitions and lattice dynamics of the hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite CH3NH3PbI3. The XRD measurements cover distinct phases between 15 K and 370 K and demonstrate a general positive thermal expansion. Clear anomalies are found around the transition temperatures. The temperature evolution of the lattice constants reveals that the transition at 160 K/330 K is of the first-/second-order type. Raman measurements uncover three strong low-frequency modes, which can be ascribed to the vibration of the Pb/I atoms. The temperature evolution of the modes clearly catches these transitions at 160 K and 330 K, and confirms the transition types, which are exactly consistent with the XRD results. The present study may set an experimental basis to understand the high conversion efficiency in methylammonium lead iodide.

Abstract:Methylammmonium lead iodide perovskites (CH3NH3PbI3) have received wide attention due to their superior opto-electronic properties. We performed first-principles calculations to investigate the structural, electronic, and optical properties of mixed halide perovskites CH3NH3Pb(I1-yXy)(3) (X = Cl, Br; y = 0, 0.33, 0.67). Our results reveal the reduction of the lattice constants and dielectric constants and enhancement of band gaps with increasing doping concentration of Cl-/Br- at I-. Electronic structure calculations indicate that the valance band maximum (VBM) is mainly governed by the halide p orbitals and Pb 6s orbitals, Pb 6p orbitals contribute the conduction band minimum (CBM) and doping does not change the direct semiconductor material. The organic cation [CH3NH3](+) does not take part in the formation of the band and only one electron donates to the considered materials. The increasing trends of the band gap with Cl content from y = 0 (0.793 eV) to y = 0.33 (0.953 eV) then to y = 0.67 (1.126 eV). The optical absorption of the considered structures in the visible spectrum range is decreased but after doping the stability of the material is improving.
Nonlinear optical properties of two and three-dimensional hybrid perovskite using single beam F-scan technique at 1064 nm

Abstract:In this paper two-photon absorption coefficient $\beta$ and nonlinear refractive index ${n}_{2}$ have been measured at 1064 nm for a new two-dimensional (CH3(CH2)2NH3)2(CH3NH3)2Pb3Br10 hybrid perovskite. The nonlinear optical properties were measured using transmission and reflection F-scan techniques. As a reference, a three-dimensional CH3NH3PbBr3 has been used. As expected, the values obtained for ${n}_{2}$ and $\beta$ show a difference between these two materials. The figure of merit for both, three dimensional and two-dimensional perovskites are F=0.31 and F=0.04, respectively, implying that these materials can be used in photonics applications such as optical limiting devices and all-optical switching.

The Effects of the Organic-Inorganic Interactions on the Thermal Transport Properties of CH3NH3PbI3

Abstract:Methylammonium lead iodide perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3), the most investigated hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite, is characterized by a quite low thermal conductivity. The rotational motion of methylammonium cations is considered responsible for phonon transport suppression; however, to date, the specific mechanism of the process has not been clarified. In this study, we elucidate the role of rotations in thermal properties based on molecular dynamics simulations. To do it, we developed an empirical potential for CH3NH3PbI3 by fitting to ab initio calculations and evaluated its thermal conductivity by means of nonequilibrium molecular dynamics. Results are compared with model systems that include different embedded cations, and this comparison shows a dominant suppression effect provided by rotational motions. We also checked the temperature dependence of the vibrational density of states and specified the energy range in which anharmonic couplings occur. By means of phonon dispersion analysis, we were able to fully elucidate the suppression mechanism: the rotations are coupled with translational motions of cations, via which inorganic lattice vibrations are coupled and scatter each other.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) lead halide perovskites have emerged as a promising class of coordination polymers for solar cells, photodetectors, and light-emitting devices. These compounds thus far comprise methylammonium, formamidinium, or cesium as cations. In this work, we introduce a new methylhydrazinium 3D perovskite, CH3NH2NH2PbBr3, that crystallizes in the polar P21 structure at room temperature and undergoes a phase transition to the cubic Pm3̅m phase at 418 K. This perovskite exhibits strong second-harmonic generation activity, features switchable dielectric behavior, thermochromism, and two-photon energy upconversion under 800 nm excitation.

Abstract:Halide perovskite (Cs3Cu2Br5) is synthesized by a thermal injection method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) proves that the Cs3Cu2Br5 crystal phase is an intersection phase. The Cs3Cu2Br5 organic glasses are fabricated by dispersing Cs3Cu2Br5 materials in methyl methacrylate (MMA). The nonlinear absorption (NLA) and the nonlinear refraction (NLR) performances of Cs3Cu2Br5/PMMA organic glasses are measured via the open-aperture (OA) and the closed-aperture (CA) Z-scan technique, respectively. The samples show typical reverse saturable absorption (RSA) and self-focusing effect with the change of input energy (40–72 μJ). Meanwhile, the room-temperature photo-luminescence (PL) measurement reveals light emission for Cs3Cu2Br5. The effects on nonlinear optical (NLO) properties are investigated by controlling the input energy and the amount of the sample. The Cs3Cu2Br5/PMMA organic glasses exhibit excellent NLA and NLR properties. The NLA coefficient of (Cs3Cu2Br5)18/PMMA organic glass is much higher than those of lead-containing perovskite such as CsPbCl3 and CsPbBr3 nanosheets. This results in Cs3Cu2Br5/PMMA organic glasses show superior optical limiting (OL) performance. The Cs3Cu2Br5 perovskite materials show great potential in devices such as light-emitting diodes and optical switches.

Abstract:The temperature dependence of absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies were used to study the optical properties of 2D perovskite films, including n = 1 and 3 of (PEA)(2)(CH3NH3)(n-1)[PbnI3n+1] (PEA = C6H5(CH2)(2)NH3). In (PEA)(2)[Pb1I4] (PEPI), excitons coupling to optical phonons with an average energy of similar to 30 meV dominate the photophysics of absorption and PL. (PEA)(2)(CH3NH3)(2)[Pb3I10] (shortened as PMPI3), nominally prepared as n = 3, actually was a mixture of multiple layered perovskites with various n. In absorption, a PMPI3 film presents respective n materials' excitonic features, coupling to phonons with an average energy of similar to 30 meV; in analyzing PL peaked singly at similar to 1.6 eV and its width as a function of temperature, we found that PMPI3 behaves like PEPI at around 80 K but like 3D perovskite near room temperature, with three times larger electron-phonon interaction strength compared to that in PEPI.

Abstract:Organic/inorganic hybrid perovskite materials, such as CH3NH3PbX3 (X = I, Br), have attracted the attention of the scientific community due to their excellent properties such as a widely tunable bandgap, high optical absorption coefficient, excellent power conversion efficiency, etc. The exposure of perovskite solar cells and photovoltaic devices to heat can significantly degrade their performance. Therefore, elucidating their temperature-dependent optical properties is essential for performance optimization of perovskite solar cells. We synthesized CH3NH3PbBr3 (MAPbBr3) single crystals through the polymer-controlled nucleation route and investigated the optical properties and molecular structure evolution of them with temperature. Through temperature evolution photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, we found that the fluorescence intensity was greatly affected by increasing the temperature, with an asymmetric PL profile suggesting that more captured excitons undergo radiative complexation. The optical photographs showed that the color of MAPbBr3 single crystals faded. Raman spectroscopy revealed that during the heating process, the structure of MAPbBr3 was still preserved at 90 °C since all of the Raman bands were very clear. When the temperature increased to 120 °C, the Raman bands of the internal modes became very weak. On further heating, the inorganic framework on sample's surface started to disintegrate above 210 °C. During the heating process, the PL spectra exhibited significant changes in spectral intensity, peak position and Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM). The PL spectral intensity decreased abruptly with increasing temperature. The peak position was blue shifted with increasing temperature, and the peak shape showed an obvious asymmetry. The FMWH of the PL spectra was gradually broadened with the increase in the temperature, and there was a sharp increase from 270 °C to 300 °C. These variations in the PL spectra with temperature indicate that the optical properties of MAPbBr3 are greatly affected by temperature, which in turn affects the application of MAPbBr3 in fields such as optical devices. These results may be instructive for the application of MAPbBr3.

Abstract:(Na1−xKx)0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NKBT) (x=0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) thin films with good surface morphology and rhombohedral perovskite structure were fabricated on quartz substrates by a sol–gel process. The fundamental optical constants (the band gaps, linear refractive indices and absorption coefficients) of the films were obtained through optical transmittance measurements. The nonlinear optical properties were investigated by Z-scan technique performed at 532nm with a picosecond laser. A two-photon absorption effect closely related with potassium-doping content was found in thin films, and the nonlinear refractive index n2 increases evidently with potassium-doping. The real part of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) is much larger than its imaginary part, indicating that the third-order optical nonlinear response of the NKBT films is dominated by the optical nonlinear refractive behavior. These results show that NKBT thin films have potential applications in nonlinear optics.
Ultrafast Third Order Nonlinear Optical Properties of Self-Assembled Indium Phthalocyanine Multilayer Films

Abstract:An ultrathin composite films with alternated layers containing anionic lithium tetracarboxyl indium phthalocyanine chloride (ClInPc(COOLi)4) and cationic poly(diallydimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDDA) were prepared using layer-by-layer assembly technique. The resulting films were characterized by Ultraviolet-visible and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, showing regularly consecutive adsorption. The ultrafast third-order nonlinear optical properties of the films were investigated via a 4f coherent imaging system with phase object with 190 fs laser pulses at 532nm. The results demonstrate that the ultrathin films exhibited excellent selffocusing effect (n2 - 8.86 x 10-17 m2/W) and reverse saturable absorption properties (beta - 5.19 x 10-10 m/ W), while the nonlinear optical response of the same composite in aqueous solution were found to be negligible. Our results indicate that the ClInPc(COOLi)4/PDDA film is a promising candidate for future nonlinear optical devices.
First-Principles Studies of Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties of Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Halide Perovskites

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites have ignited tremendous interests for photovoltaic applications. However, their nonlinear optical response has not been studied although many of these structures lack the centrosymmetry and exhibit ferroelectricity. In this work, we employ our developed large-scale parallel, first-principles simulation tool (ArchNLO) to explore second-order nonlinear optical properties of a typical family of organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites, CH3NH3MX3 (M= Ge, Sn, Pb; X=Cl, Br, I). We find that these hybrid perovskites exhibit second harmonic generation and linear electro-optic effect. The nonlinear optical effects are strongly influenced by the types and positions of cations/anions and corresponding band gaps. Particularly, the distorted cubic phase, which is essentially triclinic, of CH3NH3SnI3 shows significant second harmonic generation and electro-optic effect, which are comparable with those widely used materials, such as GaAs. These second-order optical properties of organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites and their low-temperature, solution-based fabrication pave the way for achieving and implementing nonlinear optical devices with low cost.

Abstract:We report the study of the mechanical structure and optical properties of lead halide perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 using ab initio methods. The ground state energy calculations were performed within density functional theory and generalized gradient approximation using the pseudopotential method with plane-wave basis sets. The norm conserving pseudopotential was used. The ground state properties of the electronic structure of the perovskite were used and elastic parameters such as bulk modulus B, Young’s modulus E, shear modulus G, and Poisson’s ratio υ were determined and found to be in good agreement with experimental values. The ratio B / G obtained was found to be greater than 1.75. Poisson’s ratio ( υ ) was obtained as 0.25 implying that CH3NH3PbI3 is a ductile material. The absorption coefficient within the energy range of 0 to 6 eV was found to be 5.76 × 105 cm−1 indicating maximum absorption. The absorption coefficient compares well with the available experimental and computed values.

Abstract:For improving third-order optical nonlinear properties of metallophthalocyanine films,an thin composite film with alternating layers containing anionic tetra sulfonated phthalocyaninavanadium(VOTsPc) and cationic polyethylenimine(PEI) has been prepared by the electrostatic self-assembly technique.The alternating multilayer assemblies of VOTsPc/PEI were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy,showing the regularly consecutive adsorption process.Surface morphology of the fabricated VOTsPc/PEI thin film was studied by atomic force microscopy technique.The result showed that the film surface was smooth and homogeneous.The closely packed nanoparticles,with the average diameter of 75 nm and the mean interface roughness of 4.406 nm,can be easily seen on the film surface uniformly.By using a frequency-doubled Q switched Nd:YAG pulse laser system with ns/ps laser pulse,the third-order optical nonlinear properties of the film were studied by Z-scan measurements at wavelength of 532 nm with 4 ns pulses.By simulation and calculation of the experimental data,the nonlinear refractive index,n2 value and the nonlinear absorption coefficient,β value of a 30-bilayer VOTsPc/PEI film is 4.87×10~(-6) esu and 1.2×10~(-5) m/W,respectively.The third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ~((3)) value of the film is 1.57×10~(-6) esu by calculation.The VOTsPc/PEI film shows strong nonlinear reverse saturable absorption performance and has broad application prospects.

Abstract:A series of poly(heteroarylene methines) containing one pyrrole or thiophene ring alternating with a carbon atom in the main chain were synthesized. The resonant third-order optical nonlinearity at 532 nm was studied by using degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) techique. The resonant second-order hyperpolarizabilities γ and third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(3) were up to 10-30esu and 10-8esu respectively. Poly{pyrrole-[2,5-diyl(p-N,N-dimethlamino)benzylidene]} (PPDMAB) was chosen to be further studied mainly due to its good solubility and film forming performance.Time-resolved Optical Kerr effect (OKE) of PPDMAB was investigated with femtosecond laser pulses at 790 nm. Only an ultrafast component of OKE of PPDMAB was observed and its dephasing time was 84.7 fs, which is attributed to π-electron-cloud distortion occurring upon the non-resonant excitation. The off-resonant second-order hyperpolarizabilities γ and third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(3) of PPDMAB were also determined by transient OKE. The results show that PPDMAB exhibit large off-resonant nonlinearities γ as large as γ=5.78×10-32esu, for each structural units and χ(3) as large as χ(3)=1.26×10-10esu for the material have been obtained.
