Abstract:The broadband measurement of complex permittivity of materials based on transmission line methods has been attracting more and more interests in scientific research and industrial applications. In this paper, by removing the transition section in conventional implementations and applying high-order mode-matching theory of axisymmetric coaxial discontinuity, we propose a single-cavity coaxial transducer for broadband measurement of complex permittivity of lossy media. With an ultra simple structure, the sample holder can be designed to install any coaxial connector, and its radial and longitudinal dimensions can be arbitrarily designed to fit variant capacity demands. Full-wave simulation and experimental measurement show that the proposed transducer can obtain the same precision as previous designs. The proposed approach also applies for two-port transducers. We expect a wide range of practical applications of this general approach in scientific research and industrial applications.

Abstract:The method of real ray trace for the time characteristic analyzing of laser pulse is presented. By tracing the sampling rays with optical path or phase initialized by given input pulse and limited by the entrance pupil, the output pulse samples are calculated including the pulse width and energy distribution and the fitting pulse curve is obtained. Further more, this method can be also used for analyzing the affection of the tolerance in pulse transmission systems to the beam quality. Taking some pulse transmission systems as examples in which there are different diffraction components such as diffraction gratings, binary optical elements and holographic elements, the output pulse curves come from different input pulse are given, and the functions of different diffraction elements as pulse boarder and compressor are compared. As shown by the results that the multiple diffraction of binary optical elements will not only generates multiple focus points at the output space to affect the space quality of laser beam, but also leads to broad the pulse width so as to change the laser's time characteristics.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a novel method to measure the high-frequency properties of nanomaterials with commercial radio-frequency instruments and sample stages made of coaxial cables.By using this method,we have achieved a time-resolution about 10 pico-second in measurements of pulse-delay in various transmission lines.We have found the difference in delay time, signal distortion and attenuation between copper wires and multi-walled carbon nanotube bundles when they are both served as the cores of coaxial cables for transmission of nano-second pulses.This method has a potential to be applied in high-frequency studies of other nanomaterials.

Abstract:A method of on-line coaxality error measuring for rotary parts was introduced.The collection of non-touching high precision mesuring point with the application of laser-optical displacement sensors.Both the placement of the sensors and the whole measuring project were presented,and the algorithm for coaxality error based on them was introduced.The result of experiment illustrates that the whole system precision arrives 0.02 mm.

Abstract:Due to its properties of low attenuation, high capacity and reliability, the widespread optical fiber network has become an attractive option for long-distance transmission. The signal transmission delay in fiber, as an essential characteristic, becomes a significant parameter that has broad effects on the performance of optical communications, fiber timing distribution systems, phased array antennas, and some other large-scale scientific or engineering facilities. We report a novel method for signal transmission delay measurement in optical fibers. Based on phase discrimination, dual-frequency locking and measurement, it achieves a very high measurement precision of 0.2 ps with a 0.1 ps resolution, and dynamic range over 50 km. Using a phase shift and frequency locking technique, the measurement ambiguity can be resolved within only a few seconds. It greatly simplifies the measurement procedure and requires much simpler equipment. A good agreement in measurement results with the conventional pulsed method is obtained as well.

Abstract:Most of the timing scenarios call for the need of precise delay measurement and compensation for coaxial cables. However, experience to date has shown that the cable delay can only be characterized by other physical quantities such as time interval or group delay, etc. In this paper, the principles of three existing commonly used measurement methods were discussed and the various factors that can affect the measurement results were analyzed. Measurement setups and the corresponding uncertainty budgets for the three techniques were then designed and explained. With the aim to quantify numerical effects of the influential factors, specific experiments on a 50 m antenna cable were conducted on time interval measurement to obtain the optimal range of the instrument's trigger level based on external pulses with different rise time settings, as well as on group delay measurement to determine the influence of different frequency aperture settings. Then, experiments using the relatively proper parameters, which we believe, to the optimal extent, would mitigate the measurement uncertainties were performed. In order to ensure the measurement consistency across the methods, the measurement results were compared and cross-validated to obtain the recommended selections of parameters to align the measurements for coaxial cable delay utilizing the different methods.

A special designed connector and a pairs of tapers are used in the system to achieve a good transmission performance. The system is calibrated by the measurement of a pillbox cavity. Abstract:A novel photonic approach to realize the instantaneous microwave frequency measurement with digital output is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. Based on the power fading function of a double-sideband modulated microwave signal transmitting in a dispersive fiber channel, the microwave frequency to digital code mapping can be realized in a multi-channel system where each channel is configured with a predetermined amount of dispersion. The coding process involved here is similar to that of the photonic analog-to-digital conversion. The principle of the system is discussed in detail. An experiment is carried out, in which the frequency identification with 4-bit quantization levels in 17.5GHz measurement range is demonstrated. The measurement range and the resolution are discussed theoretically and numerically.

Abstract:A fiber optic analogue transmission system for pulse signal in strong electromagnetic is introduced.By correcting the photoelectric cell's nonlinearity in advance,and by increasing the RC coupling time constant the system has wide dynamic range,little nonlinear distortion and wide pass band from 1 Hz to 150 MHz.By adjusting the input circuit along with an antenna the system can be used to measure pulse magnetic field or electric field.Design methods for the pulse electromagnetic field coupling circuits and measurement examples are presented.The examples show that the system is suitable for measuring wide band pulse electromagnetic field.

Abstract:The measurement and inspection methods based on ultrasonic technology usually request accurate measuring the propagation time of ultrasonic wave in media.In accordance with the technology of ultrasonic nondestructive pressure measurement,a sing-around device was developed for measuring the propagation time of ultrasonic wave.In measurement,the signal received by the receiving probe is output through the gate circuit and then re-triggers the transmitting probe.In order to enhance the stability and sensitivity,highly stable circuits are adopted in the device.The results of experiment show that by using this device,0.5ns of time change of propagation can be detected.

Abstract:In order to effectively evaluate the attenuation distribution of the dielectric rod coated with resistive thin-film, a new test fixture is designed using parallel strips and tapered structure. Hyperbolical tapered lines to parallel strips and angle gradient transitions near the connectors can operate in an ultrawideband frequency range from 1GHz to 40GHz. In the whole range, insertion loss of this fixture is blow 3dB, and return loss is higher than 13dB. The measured attenuation distribution of a dielectric rod coated with resistive thin-film is consistent with the actual at different frequencies.

Abstract:Optical fiber is the cornerstone of the contemporary inter-network and has produced profound and far-reaching effect on modern information society ever since it was invented. The detection of key parameters of optical fiber such as length, refractive index, and chromatic dispersion is of great significance to ensure the quality and security of communication network. Here, a synchronous, fast, and high-precision measurement method for the length and dispersion of optical fibers is proposed, where the time-of-flight measurement and spectral interference are organically combined using an optical frequency comb (OFC) with the assistance of a modulated narrow linewidth single-frequency laser. The length and the dispersion coefficient distribution can be preciously obtained directly and simultaneously by measuring only single-frame interference spectrum. The excellent time–frequency characteristics of the OFC and our unique algorithm enable the realization of extremely high measurement accuracy and resolution: a resolution of @ 500 m and an accuracy of 1.5 cm ( relatively) @ 11 000 m, as well as a dispersion measurement accuracy of 0.5%. The method boasts rapid measurement, ample bandwidth, elimination of scanning, and exceptional precision, making it highly applicable in both optical communication and optical fiber sensing systems.

Abstract:Impedance of vacuum components in the ring is very important in the analysis of beam instability. This paper describes the construction of a broadband impedance measurement system. This system applies the coaxial line methods of M. Sands and J. Rees. The system is made up of HP8720B vector network analyser and a PC computer. A new RF connector is designed to get the inner conductor straining and RF impedance matching. A pillbox cavity is measured by this system. The result agreed well with the MAFIA calculation

Abstract:For the applications of TDR system in measuring water content, FDTD equations were obtained based on the propagation equations of electromagnetic wave. Using the equations the program was compiled in Matlab for simulation. Through comparing simulating curve and test curve it turns out that the simulating curve accords with test curve well for water content measuring TDR system in homogeneous medium, whereas the simulating curve does not for analog coaxial cable system in layered medium, although the inflexion points are shown correctly.

Abstract:Fiber-delay measurement is one of the key fundamental technologies in numerous fields. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-precision and concise optical time delay measurement system based on the technique of linear optical sampling, reaching the precision better than 100 fs under averaging. The use of only two optical frequency combs without locking the carrier-envelope-offset frequency greatly simplifies the structure of the time-delay measurement system. We also experimentally investigate the current limitations on the precision of the system. The timing jitter noises of two sources are mainly non-common mode, and are both restricted to the frequency sources. Our results indicate that the proposed device can measure fiber length fluctuations below 10 $\mu {\rm{m}}$, paving the way for further analyses of the external disturbances on the fiber link.

Abstract:We demonstrated a sub-100 picosecond level transmission stability clock-offset measurement via a 50 km nonreciprocal fiber link with a dual comb LOS technique. This experiment result supports the remote high precision time and frequency transmission and synchronization of two or more combs over practical commercial optical communication system fiber links, which conformed to the DWDM international standards system. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first similar demonstration have been reported.

Abstract:In the past few decades, Pulsed Power (PP) has been one of the fastest growing technologies, with more and more systems frequently emerging in domains such as civil, medical and military. These systems are based on high-voltage pulses, up to several hundreds of kilovolts, with temporal parameters ranging from microsecond levels to sub-nanosecond levels. One of the biggest challenges in this technology is the accurate and precise measurement of the generated PP. The PP measurement systems must possess high-voltage and wideband properties simultaneously, which is often conflicting. The central elements of a PP measurement system are a voltage divider and a termination load. The work presented in this article is dedicated to the second element of the PP measurement system. This paper describes the development of a 50 Ω coaxial termination load and its connectors for a high power ultrawideband (UWB) pulse measurement systems. The principle roles of these devices are to serve as a dummy matched load for the former and to facilitate the connections between different components of the pulse measurement system for the latter. These devices are designed to withstand pulse voltage amplitudes at least up to 500 kV with temporal parameters, such as rise time and pulse duration, varying from nanosecond to sub-nanosecond ranges. The main challenge in the development of a high-voltage UWB termination load is the tradeoff between the high-voltage and wideband characteristics, both of them requiring opposite dimensional aspects for the load device. This challenge is overcame by the special exponential geometry of the load device. The design employs a 30 cm long low-inductance tubular ceramic 50 Ω resistor, enclosed in a critically dimensioned shielding conductor of an exponential inner profile. This shrinking coaxial structure makes it possible to maintain a good level of matching all along the 50 Ω load. The results obtained through 3D electromagnetic modeling and vector network analyzer measurements show good agreement and confirm the reflection coefficient below −27 dB up to at least 2.5 GHz for the load device. Moreover, calculations demonstrate that the load device is very well adapted for nanosecond and sub-nanosecond pulses with voltage peaks as high as 500 kV. These results demonstrate the high-voltage and UWB properties of the developed load device and prove the utilization of this device in the measurement systems for the accurate and precise measurements of the PP.

Abstract:The characteristics of signal transmission over the power line networks are the key factors to be considered in designing the distribution line communication systems. A novel approach is proposed firstly for the measurement of signal transmission over the networks, then on the basis of great amount measurements, the signal attenuation and group delay as well as noises are discussed and analyzed. Finally the countermeasures against the general characteristics are proposed and the industry test result proves that the countermeasures are really effective.

Abstract:We propose a novel technique to measure fiber dispersion without any derivative operation and index measurement. Based on the relationship between the dispersion and the signal in optical computing optical coherence tomography, dispersion can be deduced with high accuracy from optical computing OCT signal position and resolution. The group velocity dispersion and third order dispersion of single mode fiber and dispersion compensating fiber with lengths of 10 m-10 km are measured to be in good consistence with the nominal value.
