Abstract:Due to their significance both in theory and industrial application, zero-wait scheduling problems (ZWSPs) of batch plants have received more and more attentions. However, how to tackle large-scale ZWSPs with setup times is still a challenging problem. This paper presents a novel hybrid permutation-based differential evolution (HPDE) for this purpose. More specifically, ZWSPs are formulated as asymmetrical traveling salesman problems (ATSP). To deal with ATSP model effectively, a permutation-based DE (PDE) algorithm and fast complex heuristic (FCH) local search scheme are proposed. Furthermore, HPDE, a hybrid approach of PDE and FCH local search, is proposed. The performances of HPDE are illustrated based on extensive experiments and comparisons with recently developed approaches in literature. The results demonstrate that HPDE reaches high-quality solutions in short computational time. Furthermore, it requires fewer user-defined parameters, rendering it applicable to real-life large-scale ZWSPs with setup times.
Event-triggered Distributed Nash Equilibrium Seeking over Directed Graphs and Its Application to Power Management

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of distributed discrete-time Nash equilibrium computation with event-triggered communication over directed graphs is studied. Each agent can only receive strategies from its neighbors through a directed and unbalanced graph, while its cost function may rely on the information of all agents. To this end, each agent needs to estimate the strategy profile. Meanwhile, an event-triggered communication mechanism is introduced, which can effectively compensate for network resource loss. Concretely, specific moments that each agent transmits its information are decided by the pre-designed event-triggered condition. In this setting, two discrete-time Nash equilibrium seeking algorithms with event-triggered communication are designed, respectively considering that the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector of the adjacency matrix associated the directed communication graph is known and unknown in advance. It is rigorously proved that both algorithms can linearly converge to the Nash equilibrium with a small error. Finally, a power management example in smart grids is presented to verify the performance of proposed algorithms.

Abstract:For the feature that different data have different real-time requirements in the industrial field,a TDMA-based scheduling algorithm is proposed.The scheduling algorithm is proposed based on the EPA wired scheduling algorithm and in the scheduling algorithm a Communication Macro Cycle is divided into two phases,periodic packet transferring phase and non-periodic packet transferring phase.In the periodic packet transferring phase,each device is allocated a time slot to transfer data with the highest priority.In the non-periodic packet transferring phase,the gateway device allocates time slot to each device according to their priority.The scheduling algorithm has both determinacy and real-time.A algorithm is also proposed to calculate the Communication Macro Cycle,the time of periodic packet transferring and non-periodic packet transferring phase.Testing through tree network shows that the scheduling algorithm achieves low packet loss rate.

Abstract:Software development is becoming a more and more complicated task, and traditional client/server based software engineering management methods may not be suitable for large-scale software development. With the rapid development of the network technologies solutions have been emerged. This paper proposes a software engineering management method based on the Peer-to-Peer infrastructure. By exploring the characteristics of P2P, our system takes "Peer Group" as the unit to build up services such as source code management, task assignment, and software visualization. Our framework overcomes the bottleneck existed in the server in the traditional C/S structure, and transfers the loads of the server to the network boundary. Our method takes full advantages of the computation resources, and increases the system's performances. A performance test using our method in software development for practical applications will also be shown in the paper.
Study and realization of EPA communication schedule algorithm based on parallel processing

Abstract:In view of the problems of large memory footprint and low lookup efficiency existing in the present software implementation of the EPA (Ethernet for plant automation) communication schedule algorithm, the paper proposes a hardware implementation method based on the field programmable gate array (FPGA). This method adopts a strategy of storing messages intensively and constructing communication schedule lists separately, and based on this, devises a parallel processing scheme for lookup of the communication schedule lists. The results of the test on a platform with a Altera Cyclone II FPGA as the main controller show that compared with the software implementation, this implementation method decreases the consumption of memory resources, enhances the message lookup efficiency by 9 times, and doubles the performance of communication.
An Effective Estimation of Distribution Algorithm for Solving Uniform Parallel Machine Scheduling Problem with Precedence Constraints

Abstract:In this paper, an effective estimation of distributed algorithm (eEDA) is proposed to solve the uniform parallel machine scheduling problem with precedence constraints (prec-UFPMSP). In the eEDA, the permutation-based encoding scheme is adopted and the earliest finish time (EFT) method is used to decode the solutions to the detail schedules. A new effective probability model is designed to describe the relative positions of the jobs. Based on such a model, an incremental learning based updating method is developed and a sampling mechanism is proposed to generate feasible solutions with good diversity. In addition, the Taguchi method of design-of-experiment (DOE) method is used to investigate the effect of key parameters on the performance of the eEDA. Finally, numerical tests are carried out to demonstrate the superiority of the probability model, and the comparative results show that the eEDA outperforms the existing algorithm for most cases.

Abstract:This paper tackles the problem of parallelizing heterogeneous computational tasks across a number of computational nodes (aka agents) where each agent may not be able to perform all the tasks and may have different computational speeds. An equivalent problem can be found in operations research, and it is known as scheduling tasks on unrelated parallel machines (also known as R∥Cmax). Given this equivalence observation, we present the spanning tree decentralized task distribution algorithm (ST-DTDA), the first decentralized solution to R∥Cmax. ST-DTDA achieves decomposition by means of the min–max algorithm, a member of the generalized distributive law family, that performs inference by message-passing along the edges of a graphical model (known as a junction tree). Specifically, ST-DTDA uses min–max to optimally solve an approximation of the original R∥Cmax problem that results from eliminating possible agent-task allocations until it is mapped into an acyclic structure. To eliminate those allocations that are least likely to have an impact on the solution quality, ST-DTDA uses a heuristic approach. Moreover, ST-DTDA provides a per-instance approximation ratio that guarantees that the makespan of its solution (optimal in the approximated R∥Cmax problem) is not more than a factor ρ times the makespan of the optimal of the original problem. In our empirical evaluation of ST-DTDA, we show that ST-DTDA, with a min-regret heuristic, converges to solutions that are between 78 and 95% optimal whilst providing approximation ratios lower than 3.

Discrete Event Dynamic Systems

Abstract:In this paper we use the event synchronization scheme to develop a new method for parallel simulation of many discrete event dynamic systems simultaneously. Though a few parallel simulation methods have been developed during the last several years, such as the well-known Standard Clock method, most of them are largely limited to Markovian systems. The main advantage of our method is its applicability to non-Markovian systems. For Markovian systems a comparison study on efficiency between our method and the Standard Clock method is done on Connection Machine CM-5. CM-5 is a parallel machine with both SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) and MIMD (Multiple Instruction Multiple Data) architectures. The simulation results show that if event rates of Markovian systems do not differ by much then both methods are compatible but the Standard Clock method performs better in most cases. For Markovian systems with very different event rates, our method often yields better results. Most importantly, our simulation results also show that our method works as efficiently for non-Markovian systems as for Markovian systems.

Abstract:In order to meet the requirement of communication for emergency-response in power systems and ensure real-time,accurate and flexible information communication as much as possible,a design scheme for the message management system is proposed.The design includes that of the system functions,the processing flow chart of message transfer,the object-oriented definition of message class and the Java-based solution.Finally,samples of application in a real power company are shown to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme,which can provide necessary functions such as the standardization of message,real-time message transfer and message monitoring in emergency-response procedures.

Abstract:SIMULATION, Volume 100, Issue 12, Page 1197-1223, December 2024. This paper documents the origins and development of the parallel and distributed simulation field, especially as it relates to parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) technology. My focus is on the people and ideas that contributed to the creation and evolution of PDES technology over the past five decades. Much of this paper reviews the research conducted in academia and research laboratories that were the driving forces behind the development of PDES technology as well as subsequent efforts in government and industry to bring the technology to modeling and simulation practitioners. The origins of PDES technology lie in a fundamental technical issue called the synchronization problem. This problem is discussed, as well as the two main solution approaches that were created. The development of these approaches and their evolution to form the time management services of the High Level Architecture (HLA) standard are described, as well as the community of researchers and practitioners that formed in establishing this field. Commercialization efforts are discussed followed by a brief discussion of areas requiring further research. The importance of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International (SCS) and its flagship journal, Simulation, in the development of the field are discussed. Throughout this discussion, I provide my personal observations and take away lessons concerning the development of the field.

Abstract:The permutation flow-shop scheduling problem (PFSSP) is a typical combinational optimization problem, which is of wide engineering background and has been proved to be strongly NP-hard. In this paper, a hybrid algorithm based on differential evolution (DE), named HDE, is proposed for the single-objective PFSSPs. Firstly, to make DE suitable for solving PFSSPs, a largest-order-value (LOV) rule is presented to convert the continuous values of individuals in DE to job permutations. Secondly, after the DE-based exploration, a simple but efficient local search, which is designed according to the PFSSPs’ landscape, is applied to emphasize exploitation. Thus, not only does the HDE apply the parallel evolution mechanism of DE to perform effective exploration (global search), but it also adopts problem-dependent local search methodology to adequately perform exploitation (local search). Based on the theory of finite Markov chains, the convergence property of the HDE is analyzed. Then, the HDE is extended to a multi-objective HDE (MHDE) to solve the multi-objective PFSSPs. Simulations and comparisons based on benchmarks for both single-objective and multi-objective PFSSPs are carried out, which show the effectiveness, efficiency, and robustness of the proposed HDE and MHDE.

Abstract:In the production enterprises, the distributed hybrid flow-shop scheduling problems widely exist in the actual production controlling and decision, especially in the production of steel and aluminum. Considering the uncertain processing time in the actual production environment, the constraint of deteriorated variable processing time is added in some problems. In this paper, the distributed hybrid flow-shop scheduling problem with deterioration effect (DHFSP-DE) is investigated. The framework of evolutionary multitasking memetic algorithm (MTMA) is designed to address the proposed model. In the proposed method, evolutionary transfer learning is utilized to communicate between two independent DHFSP-DE solvers. The implicit knowledge of the scheduling scheme can be transferred into other solvers to guide the evolution of the population. The memetic algorithm combines a strategy of local intensification with a population-based paradigm. These strategies can capture the implicit knowledge of DHFSP-DE. This paper makes the first attempt to work on the framework of evolutionary multitasking learning for DHFSP-DE problems. The experimental results on the different instances show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed MTMA algorithm. Note to Practitioners —The distributed hybrid flow-shop scheduling problem with deterioration effect (DHFSP-DE) is modeled based on the production process of aluminum. The DHFSP-DE is also widely used in the production process of various industries. As the processing time of the job is varied with time, the determined scheduling problem is transformed into a scheduling problem with deterioration effect. This transformation makes the problem even more complicated. The problems are more complex than static problems because they require greater computational dimensionality for evolutionary computation, resulting in the use of computational resources. An evolutionary multitasking memetic algorithm is designed to solve DHFSP-DEs cooperatively. The solutions of the solver can be transferred to other solvers through the mapping of DHFSP-DEs. The transferred solution can affect the evolution process. The efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed MTMA are verified by the comparison experiments. In addition, the MTMA framework can be applied to other scheduling problems.

Abstract:Timing control while preserving determinism is often a key requirement for ensuring the safety and correctness of distributed cyber-physical systems (CPS). Discrete-event (DE) systems provide a suitable model of computation (MoC) for time-sensitive distributed CPS. The high-level architecture (HLA) is a useful tool for the distributed simulation of DE systems, but its techniques can be adapted for implementing distributed CPS. However, HLA incurs considerable overhead in network messages conveying timing information between the distributed nodes and the centralized run-time infrastructure (RTI). This paper gives a novel approach and implementation that reduces such network messages while preserving DE semantics. An evaluation of our runtime demonstrates that our approach significantly reduces the volume of messages for timing information in HLA.

Abstract:The distributed manufacturing has become a prevail production mode under the economic globalization. In this article, a memetic discrete differential evolution (MDDE) algorithm is proposed to address the distributed permutation flow shop scheduling problem (DPFSP) with the minimization of the makespan. An enhanced NEH (Nawaz–Enscore–Ham) method is presented to produce potential candidate solutions and Taillard’s acceleration method is adopted to ameliorate the operational efficiency of the MDDE. A new discrete mutation strategy is introduced to promote the search efficiency of the MDDE. Four neighborhood structures, which are based on job sequence and factory assignment adjustment mechanisms, are introduced to prevent the candidates from falling the local optimum during the search process. A neighborhood search mechanism is selected adaptively through a knowledge-based strategy which focuses on the adaptive evaluation for the neighborhood selection. The optimal combinations of parameters in the MDDE algorithm are testified by the design of experiment. The computational results and comparisons demonstrated the effectiveness of the MDDE algorithm for solving the DPFSP.

Abstract:Inter-satellite link (ISL) scheduling is required by the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) to guarantee the system ranging and communication performance. In the BDS, a great number of ISL scheduling instances must be addressed every day, which will certainly spend a lot of time via normal metaheuristics and hardly meet the quick-response requirements that often occur in real-world applications. To address the dual requirements of normal and quick-response ISL schedulings, a data-driven heuristic assisted memetic algorithm (DHMA) is proposed in this paper, which includes a high-performance memetic algorithm (MA) and a data-driven heuristic. In normal situations, the high-performance MA that hybridizes parallelism, competition, and evolution strategies is performed for high-quality ISL scheduling solutions over time. When in quick-response situations, the data-driven heuristic is performed to quickly schedule high-probability ISLs according to a prediction model, which is trained from the high-quality MA solutions. The main idea of the DHMA is to address normal and quick-response schedulings separately, while high-quality normal scheduling data are trained for quick-response use. In addition, this paper also presents an easy-to-understand ISL scheduling model and its NP-completeness. A seven-day experimental study with 10 080 one-minute ISL scheduling instances shows the efficient performance of the DHMA in addressing the ISL scheduling in normal (in 84 hours) and quick-response (in 0.62 hour) situations, which can well meet the dual scheduling requirements in real-world BDS applications.

Abstract:The parallel-machine scheduling problem has been an active research field over the past decades because of its practical applications. The present study proposes job-driven scheduling heuristic (JDSH) and machine-driven scheduling heuristic (MDSH) to solve a practical-size dynamic parallel-machine scheduling problem with stochastic failures. The proposed methodology is applicable for solving an identical, uniform or an unrelated parallel-machine scheduling problem. In addition, it is sufficiently robust to accommodate product mix or demand changes. A practical-size wire-bonding workstation from an integrated-circuit packaging plant is adopted for the empirical application. The empirical results are promising, and lead to the use of MDSH as the scheduler a priori. The proposed heuristics are suitable for practical application due to their efficiency and effectiveness. When an automatic shop-floor control system is available, the proposed heuristics are seen to be superior schedulers for providing a real-time scheduling decision.

A Heuristic Method for Unstructured Pattern Management over Data Streams.

Abstract:Pattern management is an important task in data stream mining and has attracted increasing attention recently. Variations of data stream patterns typically imply some fundamental changes of underlying objects and possess significant domain meanings. Many database applications require investigating the history information to get the knowledge about the evolving process of data streams. However, in most circumstances, the data stream patterns are unstructured: limited memory space cannot record all the patterns discovered online, no training sets or predefined models are available, and large numbers of noises bring another non-trivial challenge. This paper presents our research effort in online pattern management over such streams. A novel algorithm is proposed to detect stream changes, organize meaningful patterns and distinguish useful variations from noises. It extracts new trends from unstructured data heuristically, and involves a special parameter to identify whether the current event should be treated as significant. Several experiments are performed and the results prove this new method feasible and efficient.

Abstract:The paper presents a distributed algorithm that regulates the power outputs of multiple dispersed energy storage systems (DESS), which can be used to provide desirable services for power systems, such as renewable generation output smoothing and secondary control. The algorithm is based on the cooperative control principle of network control theory and it satisfies both the power balance requirement of power systems and the fair utilization among the DESS. The most distinct feature of the algorithm is that each DESS only requires the information from its neighbors through some local communication networks (CN), utilizing a virtual leader embedded in one or several DESS to receive a power command signal. In addition, to improve the robustness of the CN among DESS, two optimization models are formulated to design the so-called “ N-1” redundant network, while considering both economic issues and convergence rate. These features enable the DESS under the algorithm to have both self-organizing and adaptive coordination properties under some adverse conditions. Simulation on the IEEE 123-bus distribution system validates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
Two Parallel Swendsen-Wang Cluster Algorithms Using Message-Passing Paradigm

Abstract:In this article, we present two different parallel Swendsen-Wang Cluster(SWC) algorithms using message-passing interface(MPI). One is based on Master-Slave Parallel Model(MSPM) and the other is based on Data-Parallel Model(DPM). A speedup of 24 with 40 processors and 16 with 37 processors is achieved with the DPM and MSPM respectively. The speedup of both algorithms at different temperature and system size is carefully examined both experimentally and theoretically, and a comparison of their efficiency is made. In the last section, based on these two parallel SWC algorithms, two parallel probability changing cluster(PCC) algorithms are proposed.

Abstract:This article presents a data management solution based on the data distribution service (DDS) communication model. The basic DDS communication model consists of a unidirectional data exchange where applications that publish data ‘push’ the relevant data, which is updated to the local caches of co-located subscribers to the data [1]. DDS has no specified center node to forward data packets and maintain the communication data. This type of publish-subscribe (P/S) model presents integrity and consistency challenges in data management. Unlike peer-to-peer (P2P) distributed storage, DDS applications have a hard real-time environment and fewer data features, and the core problem is ensuring the integrity and consistency of data in distributed systems under this hard real-time environment. This article begins with a brief introduction of the communication model used by DDS, then analyzes persistent data management problems caused by such model, and provides an appropriate solution to these problems. This solution has been implemented in a prototype system of the real-time service bus (RTSB) of Tsinghua University.
