Abstract:A complex engineering system is usually characterized by a number of interacting factors in which the relationship between these factors is not precisely known. So establishing an empirical model to predict these systems is a very troublesome task. This paper demonstrates the use of back-propagation (BP) neural networkto alleviate this problem. How to model a complex system with BP network is introduced in detail, including the solutions of some key and knotty questions such as initialization of BP network, determination of the architecture of BP network and choice of training precision and so on. Based on our experience, some new and useful advice has been put forward. As a demonstration, applications of BP neural network in predicting coal ash fusion temperature and in optimizing coal blending are presented. The results indicate that our advice is helpful for modeling a complex system satisfactorily. At last, the prospect of application of artificial neural networks in coal blending are given.

Abstract:In this article, we use the data mining theory to construct a BP neural network model to predict MPG (mile per gallon). Based on the nonlinear properties of the six variables given, considering the imperfection using two main variables at the same time, we've processed the problem via data preparation, model selection, construction, modification and error comparison as well as model adaption period. At the end of this article, we've discussed the principles of acquiring proper parameters based on the distinctions of the neural network chosen and give some possible improving directions. In this manner, in case the original data is given, the predicted MPG result will come out automatically and satisfactorily.

Abstract:A novel algorithm based on the hybrid of ant colony algorithm and BP algorithm (ACA-BP) is presented in this paper. It adopts ACA to search the optimal combination of weights in the solution space, and then uses BP to obtain the accurate optimal solutions. The proposed method can obtain better generalization ability. Compared with BP neural network, the ACA-BP neural network can achieve better performance in predicting the coal ash fusion temperature.

Abstract:Coal ash fusion temperature is important to boiler designers and operators of power plants. Fusion temperature is determined by the chemical composition of coal ash, however, their relationships are not precisely known. A novel neural network, ACO-BP neural network, is used to model coal ash fusion temperature based on its chemical composition. Ant colony optimization (ACO) is an ecological system algorithm, which draws its inspiration from the foraging behavior of real ants. A three-layer network is designed with 10 hidden nodes. The oxide contents consist of the inputs of the network and the fusion temperature is the output. Data on 80 typical Chinese coal ash samples were used for training and testing. Results show that ACO-BP neural network can obtain better performance compared with empirical formulas and BP neural network. The well-trained neural network can be used as a useful tool to predict coal ash fusion temperature according to the oxide contents of the coal ash.

Abstract:Back-propagation (BP) neural network models were developed to accurately predict the maximum burning rate and fixed carbon burnout efficiency of 16 typical Chinese coals and 48 of their blends. Early stopping method was used to prevent the BP neural network from over-fitting. The generalisation performance and prediction accuracy of the neural network thus became significantly improved. Pearson correlation analysis results showed that the maximum burning rate was most relevant to coal calorific value as well as carbon and ash content. Fixed carbon burnout efficiency was most relevant to coal volatile matter, fixed carbon and calorific value. Accordingly, three-layer BP neural network models with three input factors were developed to predict the combustion characteristics of power coal blends. The BP neural network used to predict the maximum burning rate gave a relative mean error of 1.97%, which was considerably lower than that given by the quadratic polynomial regression (7.06%). Moreover, the BP neural network used to predict the fixed carbon burnout efficiency gave a relative mean error of 0.91%, which was significantly lower than that given by the quadratic polynomial regression (4.03%).
LVQ-CPSO-BP-based prediction technique of coal gas permeability rate

Abstract:In order to solve the lower prediction accuracy of coal gas permeability through BP neural network, the LVQ-CPSO-BP prediction method was put forward based on learning vector quantization (LVQ) classification algorithm, chaos particle swarm optimization (CPSO), and BP neural network after considering five major influencing factors, namely, burial depth of coal-bed, effective stress, tempera-ture, gas pressure, and compressive strength, which were analyzed and summarized: The burial depth of coal-bed was divided into two layers through macroscopically determining the critical value. On the ba-sis of the inflection point relationship between effective stress and gas permeability, the inflection point was determined and the effective stress was divided into two sections microscopically; Four micro- scopic sample parameters were classified and identified with LVQ based on the inflection point feature. BP neural network was used to train and output the prediction results, and the weights and threshold values of BP neural network were optimized with CPSO; The effectiveness of LVQ-CPSO-BP algorithm is verified by the sample cases. The proposed method was compared with BP algorithm, GA-BP algo-rithm and PSO-BP algorithm. The results have indicated that the correct recognition rate of LVQ classi-fication is higher, and the prediction accuracy of CPSO-BP is better than the others. The overall predic-tive value is well consistent with the measured value; the prediction accuracy is even higher when the effective stress is reduced.

Abstract:Based on experimental data of coal slurry,three BP neural network models with 8,7 and 5 input factors,were set up for predicting the slurry concentration.Three BP neural networks′ algorithm was Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm,and their learning rate was 0.01.The hidden neurons number was settled by practical training effect of the networks.The hidden neurons number of BP model with 8,7 and 5 input factors is 27,30 and 24,respectively.Two data treated method were tested by seven input factors network model,which proves that the first method is the better one.The mean absolute error of the neural network models with 5,7 and 8 factors is 0.53%,0.50% and 0.74%,respectively,while that of the existed regression model is 1.15%.This indicates that the neural network models,especially the 7 factors′ model,are effective in predicting the slurry.The HGI input neuron in eight input factors′ model affects the prediction result because of its interference to other input factors.The effect of H and N in coal on the slurry is slight.

Abstract:A novel technique, the back-propagation (BP) neural network, is presented for predicting the ash fusion temperature from ash compositions for some Chinese coals instead of the traditional techniques, such as the ternary equilibrium phase diagrams and regression relationships. In the applications of the BP networks, some modifications to the original BP algorithm are adopted to speed up the BP learning algorithm, and some useful advice is put forward for the choice of some key parameters in the BP model. Compared to the traditional techniques, the BP neural network method is much more convenient and direct, and can always achieve a much better prediction effect.

Abstract:Temperature of flue gas exhausted from utility boilers is an improtant index affecting the heat loss of boilers,and it is comprehensively affected by many factors,such as boiler load,coal sort,and controlled parameters in the combustion system etc.,the relationship among them is difficult to be described by using a linear mathematical formula.By using the historical operation data of boiler,as well as the data of furnace-entering coal sort,the temperature model of flue gas exhausted from boilers has been established by adopting three nonlinear tools,i.e.the support vector machine(SVM),least square support vector machine(LSSVM),and BP neural network(BPNN),respectively,at the same time,the model's parameters of the first two algorithms have been optimized and selected by using the cross-validation method and combining with the genetic algorithm.Comparatoin and analysis of prodicted results from three prediction models show that the generalization ability of SVM method is comparatively high,and has rapid converging speed.In view of the influence of coal quality upon the combustion condition in boilers,under condition of considering the facter of coal quality,the predictionmodel for temperature of flue gas exhausted from boiler has been established and predicted by usingSVM method respectively,results show that the establishment and prediction of model after considering coal quality boast even higher accuracy.
The Investigation of Carbon Content in Fly Ash for a BP Neural Network-based Pulverized Coal-fired Boiler

Abstract:Carbon content in fly ash is a major index, which reflects the combustion efficiency of a pulverized coal-fired utility boiler. On the basis of a BP (inverse propagation of error) neural network method set up was a 11-23-1 type BP neural network model. In accordance with the specific features of a four-corner tangentially fired pulverized- coal utility boiler 11 parameters which can influence combustion have been selected to serve as input factors of the neural network. The parameters include: pulverized coal fineness, burner tilting angle, oxygen content in flue gas, parameters of 5 ranks of coal, operation combination of burner spray nozzles, etc. A training course was conducted for the established model and model parameters were obtained. The error predicted by using the model is less than 6% when compared with actual values. On this basis the authors have also proposed a simplified method for analyzing the carbon content in fly ash, which may be affected by a single parameter. This makes it possible to attain under certain conditions a concise and intuitive reflection of multi-dimensional non-linear law contained in the network. The results of the calculation and analysis indicate that the model- based method can effectively identify the mechanism of various parameters in influencing the carbon content in fly ash and may be employed to conduct the analysis, prediction and optimized regulation of carbon content in boiler fly ash.
Prediction Model of Coal Gas Permeability Based on Improved DBO Optimized BP Neural Network

Abstract:Accurate measurement of coal gas permeability helps prevent coal gas safety accidents effectively. To predict permeability more accurately, we propose the IDBO-BPNN coal body gas permeability prediction model. This model combines the Improved Dung Beetle algorithm (IDBO) with the BP neural network (BPNN). First, the Sine chaotic mapping, Osprey optimization algorithm, and adaptive T-distribution dynamic selection strategy are integrated to enhance the DBO algorithm and improve its global search capability. Then, IDBO is utilized to optimize the weights and thresholds in BPNN to enhance its prediction accuracy and mitigate the risk of overfitting to some extent. Secondly, based on the influencing factors of gas permeability, effective stress, gas pressure, temperature, and compressive strength, they are chosen as the coupling indicators. The SPSS 27 software is used to analyze the correlation among the indicators using the Pearson correlation coefficient matrix. Additionally, the Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA) is employed to extract the original data. Then, the original data is divided into principal component data for the model input. The prediction results of the IDBO-BPNN model are compared with those of the PSO-BPNN, PSO-LSSVM, PSO-SVM, MPA-BPNN, WOA-SVM, BES-SVM, and DPO-BPNN models. This comparison assesses the capability of KPCA to enhance the accuracy of model predictions and the performance of the IDBO-BPNN model. Finally, the IDBO-BPNN model is tested using data from a coal mine in Shanxi. The results indicate that the predicted outcome closely aligns with the actual value, confirming the reliability and stability of the model. Therefore, the IDBO-BPNN model is better suited for predicting coal gas permeability in academic research writing.

Abstract:Back-propagation (BP) neural network models were developed to accurately predict the ignition temperature and activation energy of 16 typical Chinese coals and 48 of their blends. Pearson correlation analysis showed that ignition temperature and activation energy were most relevant to the moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon, calorific value and oxygen of coals. Accordingly, three-layer BP neural network models with five input factors were developed to predict the ignition characteristics of power coal blends. The BP neural network for ignition temperature gave a relative mean error of 1.22%, which was considerably lower than 3.7% obtained by the quadratic polynomial regression. The BP neural network for activation energy gave a relative mean error of 3.89%, which was considerably lower than 10.3% obtained by the quadratic polynomial regression. The accuracy of the BP neural network was significantly higher than that of traditional polynomial regression.

Abstract:On the basi of 120 coal ash samples, a CSBP model basedo n BP ( Back Propaga tion) Neural Ne twork optimized by Cuckoo Search ( CS ) was proposde for predicting the ash deformation temperature of single coals, coals mixed witha ddictives and mixed coals.The thirteen chemical composition parameters and combined parameters were employed as inputs, and the ash deformation temperature was used as output of the CSBP model.The results show that whether single coal, coal mixed with additivesor mixed cola s, CSBP modleahsa bettre perfor mance compared with BP model and the average relative errors are reduced to 3.11%, 4.08%and 4.22%, respectively.In addition, comparing the prediction results of three kinds of samples,both the CSBP model and BP model haveh igher prediction errors for coals mixed with addicit ves and mixed coals more ht an that for single coals.

Abstract:Coal seam impact risk assessment is the premise of coal mine safety, which can reduce the occurrence of underground impact pressure accidents and directly affect the safety, coal production, economic and social benefits of coal mining enterprises. In order to evaluate the impact risk of coal seams more reasonably and comprehensively, and consider the weights of different influencing factors on the impact risk of coal seams, the neural network model is proposed to evaluate the impact risk of coal seams. Mining depth, impact tendency, geological structure and mining technology are selected as the influencing factors of coal seam impact risk. Each influencing factor contains different evaluation indices, a total of 18. The 18 evaluation indices and the impact risk level are normalized and quantified. The BP neural network model for evaluating coal seam impact risk level is established, and the impact risk of 2-1 coal seams in a mine in Inner Mongolia is comprehensively evaluated and analyzed in this study. The results show that the BP neural network model can represent coal seam impact risk level well. The application of the BP neural network model to evaluate coal seam impact risk level has the characteristics of high precision, fast calculation speed and less artificial calculation, which provides an efficient and convenient method for the evaluation of coal seam impact risk.

Abstract:The nonlinear back-propagation (BP) neural network models were developed to predict the maximum solid concentration of coal water slurry (CWS) which is a substitute for oil fuel, based on physicochemical properties of 37 typical Chinese coals. The Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm was used to train five BP neural network models with different input factors. The data pretreatment method, learning rate and hidden neuron number were optimized by training models. It is found that the Hardgrove grindability index (HGI), moisture and coalification degree of parent coal are 3 indispensable factors for the prediction of CWS maximum solid concentration. Each BP neural network model gives a more accurate prediction result than the traditional polynomial regression equation. The BP neural network model with 3 input factors of HGI, moisture and oxygen/carbon ratio gives the smallest mean absolute error of 0.40%, which is much lower than that of 1.15% given by the traditional polynomial regression equation.

Abstract:To the problem of fluctuations in the amount of blast furnace gas which affects the gas scheduling and gas balance,the improved back propagation(BP) network was used to build the forecasting model of blast furnace gas output.Since there were a lot of factors affecting the output of blast furnace gas,the input of the model was determined through understanding the operation mechanism of blast furnace gas and the correlation analysis of practical production data.Practical production data of blast furnace was also used to train the model.The Bayesian regularization method was used for improving the generalization ability of artificial neural network.Simulation shows that this model has high accuracy in forecasting the trends of the output of blast furnace gas,to provide the scientific basis and decision support for the gas resources balance and scheduling.As a result,it is useful to reduce the leaking gas and improve the utilization ratio of gas and the information-based degree of the whole enterprise as well.This forecasting model has been successfully applied in the gas scheduling system of Hangzhou Iron Steel Group Company(HISGC) of China and the running results demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:In order to study the methods for the prediction of coal reservoir permeability,based on the analysis of the information about coalbed methane well tests,the main influence factors on permeability of coal reservoir were analyzed.It was found that there is a noticeable co-relation between buried depth,reservoir press,in-situ stress and coal reservoir permeability in the mining areas.Based on the field survey data of coal reservoir permeability and the analysis of main factors controlling in the mining areas,the regression analysis and the BP network models of prediction for coal reservoir permeability were established.The models were used to predict the coal reservoir permeability.Compared the results predicted by regression analysis and BP artificial neural network with those analyzed by sample testing,the error is small,and the error of BP network method is smaller than that of regression analysis.Prediction of coal reservoir permeability based on analysis of well test data is feasible and the result is reliable.

Abstract:In this paper,a particle swarm optimization algorithm,which has strong global exploratory capability and efficiency,is employed to improve back propagation neural network.The PSO-BP neural network model with 7 input factors is set up for predicting the slurry concentration.The method in this paper is proved to feasible by the comparison with the result in the reference 2.The mean absolute error of the neural network model with 7 factors is 0.18%.At the same time,the model with 7 input factors is feasible by researched in this paper.

Abstract:Conventional ash-component-based slagging indices and ash fusion temperatures (AFTs) successfully predict the slagging behavior of steam coals. However, these methods fail to tell the ZDc slagging potential accurately. In this paper, a back propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) is proposed to predict the slagging potential for both ZDc and other steam coals. Python is used for the training, verification and test of the BP-ANN. In training and verification, 12 ZDc, 2 lignite, 3 blend coal samples are analyzed and other 63 coals are collected as data. The result shows that the accuracy rate of the network based on ash components is 62.5%, close to the value of conventional slagging indices. It can only predict the slagging potential of certain coals. In contrast, modifying the network with coal properties can greatly increase the accuracy rate to 87.5%. The verification results of 14 samples are completely consistent with the actual slagging behavior, and that of 2 samples shows the slagging tendency. After that, 30 samples are collected from other papers for test. The results of 25 samples are completely consistent with the actual slagging behavior and that of 3 samples shows the slagging tendency, only 2 samples telling the wrong results.

Abstract:We have developed a new method to suppress spontaneous combustion of coal piles by covering the surface of coal piles with pulverized coal. Experimental studies of three type of coal samples from China (YJL, CYW, and SW) with particle size ratio of 10:1 were performed to investigate the low‐temperature oxidation of coal pillars. In this work, we have also demonstrated that the distributions of oxygen concentration, the temperature field, as well as the spontaneous combustion of three typical Chinese coal samples can be predicted accurately using back‐propagation neural network (BPNN) by MATLAB. Pearson correlation analysis showed that temperature and oxygen concentration highly depend on the ratio of pulverized coal thickness to coal piles thickness, activation energy, void ratio, wind speed, and low‐temperature oxidation time. Three‐layer BPNN models with five input factors were developed to predict the low‐temperature oxidation process under pulverized coal. The prediction data of BPNN are fitting better with our experimental data, which confirms that BPNN modelling can accurately predict the low temperature oxidation process of coal.This article is protected by copyright.
