Abstract:Macadamia plants were treated with excessive, normal and insufficient irrigation at the flowering stage with no-irrigation as the control. The results showed that irrigation had significant effects on Macadamia plants. SOD and POD activity and photosynthate content increased and pollen development and fertility and nut set percentage improved with irrigation volume. Excessive irrigation rate did not improve the above parameters but showed a negative effect. Water deficit decreased the activity of SOD and POD, hindered the development of the pollen and finally resulted in a yield reduction. Drought-tolerance varied with cultivars. Of the 3 cultivars studied, Kau appeared to be most drought-tolerant, followed in sequence by Pahala and O.C..It is recommended that irrigation at a rate equivalent to 60% of the field capacity be made at the flowering stage if drought occurs at that time so as to improve pollination and fertilization and raise fruit-setting percentage.
