Abstract:Fel Ursi is a dried product obtained from the gallbladder of Ursidae animals, such as Selenarctos thibetanus or Ursus arctos, through gallbladder surgery for bile drainage. It is one of the rare animal medicinal materials in China and is known for its therapeutic effects, including clearing heat, removing toxins, extinguishing wind, relieving spasms, clearing the liver, and improving vision. Research has also found that Fel Ursi has pharmacological effects against cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and antioxidant stress properties. Recently, numerous studies have confirmed the close relationship between cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and the gut microbiota as well as gut metabolites. Fel Ursi contains bile acid components that may have bidirectional regulatory effects on the gut microbiota and gut metabolites. This aspect could represent a potential therapeutic pathway for Fel Ursi in the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. This article comprehensively summarized relevant literature in China and abroad, reviewed the research progress on the pharmacological effects of Fel Ursi against cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and explored the impact of Fel Ursi on gut microbiota and gut metabolites, thereby aiming to provide references for further in-depth research and clinical application of Fel Ursi.

Abstract:Objective Nettle (Urtica)contained many chemical constituents which had wide spread pharmacological activity andapplication.In this study,these researches were reviewed to provide the scientific basis for further development and utilization of medical nettles during the recent twenty years.Method Based on the research results reported in the related literatures,this paper summarized the chemical constituents,pharmacological effects,quality and safety evaluation,development and application of Urtica L. Result A variety of constituents were discovered in Urtica L.,such as flavonoids,lignanoids,coumarins,steroids,organic acids. Medical nettles have the significantly activities of benign prostatic hyperplasia inhibition,anti -rheumatism,hypoglycemic,anti -in-flammation,analgesic,antibacterial and antioxidation,and were mainly used for rheumatism and benign prostatic hyperplasia.The studies on quality control and safety evaluationof medical nettleswere not sufficient and should be further strengthened.Conclusion Nettle has a high research value.

Abstract:Herbal medicinal products are widely considered beneficial and gaining importance in preventing and treating several diseases. Urtica dioica L. (UD) is a medicinal plant that has been used as an herbal remedy and dietary supplement for centuries based on traditional experience or random trials without the know-how of phytoconstituents. UD is one of those herbs with a long record of anti-inflammatory activity and several mechanisms of action have been discussed. Plant part, extraction solvent, and phytoconstituents have a determinant effect on both efficacy and therapeutic objective. Current literature mainly elaborates on the antioxidant effect of Urtica species, with the anti-inflammatory role of UD still being a matter of discussion, as in vitro and in vivo studies have only been characterized to such an extent. In order to elaborate on this topic, the present review aims to characterize the anti-inflammatory action of several UD extracts according to in vitro and in vivo results, as well as the possible molecules and respective mechanism responsible for its anti-inflammatory effect on several pathologies. Despite the knowledge gathered so far surrounding the anti-inflammatory activity of UD, further studies are required to characterize the mechanism of action and discriminate between the molecules underlying the beneficial effects of nettle on inflammatory diseases.

Abstract:Several members of family Urticaceae are mainly found in the temperate and subtropical zones of the Northern Hemisphere and are important medicinal plants. Among them, Urtica dioica L. (Urticaceae) is an annual or perennial herb that has been used for feeding and medicinal purposes since long time and is the most exploited species of Urticaceae. Recently, it has received attention to be used as animal feed, as its fresh leaves fed to animals in moderate, dried, and other forms. This review details the advantages of U. dioica as an alternative feed in terms of germplasm specificity, nutritional composition, and feed application status. Its roots, stems, leaves, and seeds are rich in active ingredients. It has also been found to have anticancer effects through antioxidant action and promotion of apoptosis of cancer cells. In shady conditions, U. dioica is highly adaptable while under stressful conditions of drought; it also reduces light absorption and ensures carbon assimilation through light energy conversion efficiency. Therefore, it can be added to animal diets as a suitable feed to reduce costs and improve economic efficiency. This paper investigates the feasibility of using U. dioica as a feed and systematically presents the progress of research and exploitation of U. dioica .

Abstract:The Pharmacodynamics of Urtica fissa, U. laeteviens Maxim. subsp. laetevirens. and U. dioica L. subsp. gansuensis C.J.Chen was studied. The results of the experiment showed that their decoction can significantly inhibit footpad swelling induced by carrageenin and ear swelling induced by xylene in mice. They can decrease the rats' pain caused by hot board also.

Abstract:Urtica species is an angiosperm plant in the Urticaceae family. It serves as a traditional food and medicinal herb, possessing high nutritional value and various bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides, flavonoids, and polyphenolic compounds. In the realm of animal feeds, Urtica spp. can replace traditional protein feed sources and high-quality forage, thereby reducing feed costs. Moreover, Urtica spp. extract exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and boosts immune regulation. Hence, Urtica spp. plays a beneficial role in enhancing animal performance and improving their immune function. Recently, with the development of sustainable farming techniques, the demand for feed additives that prioritize safety, the absence of drug residues, and environmental friendliness have grown. Consequently, Urtica spp. and its extracts have received widespread attention in animal production. This article summarizes the biological functions of Urtica spp. and its application in animal husbandry while also outlining future prospects for its application. It will provide a scientific basis and reference point for the application of Urtica spp. in animal health and breeding.
Pharmacological and toxicological evaluation of Urtica dioica

Abstract:Context: Medicinal plants are a largely unexplored source of drug repository. Urtica dioica L. (Urticaceae) is used in traditional medicine to treat diverse conditions. Objective: The present study describes the antidiabetic, antiinflammatory, antibacterial activity, and toxicological studies of Urtica dioica. Materials and methods: U. dioica leaves were subjected to solvent extraction with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol, and aqueous, respectively, and screened for antidiabetic (300 mg/kg bw by glucose tolerance test; GTT), antiinflammatory (200 mg/kg bw by rat paw edema assay) and antibacterial activities [by disc-diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assays]. Toxicological studies were carried on Artemia salina and Wistar rats; phytochemical analyses were carried out, using chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. Results: The aqueous extract of U. dioica (AEUD) significantly (p < 0.001; 67.92%) reduced the blood glucose level during GTT in Wistar rats with an effective dose of 300 mg/kg bw in dose-dependent studies. High-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode-array detection (HPLC-DAD) analysis showed the presence of hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives and flavonoids in AEUD. Hexane Fraction-2 (HF2) exhibited both antiinflammatory activity (48.83% after 3 h), comparable to that of indomethacin (53.48%), and potent antibacterial activity with MIC values ranging from 31.25-250 µg/mL against all the tested strains. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed fatty acid esters and terpenes as the major constituents of HF2. Toxicity tests showed higher safety margin of all the solvent extracts with LC(50) > 1000 μg/mL each on A. salina. Discussion and conclusion: Our results showed that the U. dioica leaves are an interesting source of bioactive compounds, justifying their use in folk medicine, to treat various diseases.

Abstract:Introduction This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the phytochemical constituents, traditional uses, and pharmacological applications of Urtica dioica (UD), commonly known as stinging nettle. Methodology An extensive literature search was conducted to identify 278 relevant articles. After eliminating 38 duplicates, we thoroughly analysed the remaining 240 articles by examining their titles and abstracts. Finally, 126 articles were selected for inclusion in this comprehensive study on UD. Discussion This review explores the plant identifiable characteristics, geographical distribution and taxonomic classification. The phytochemicals found in plants include sterols, fatty acids, alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, lignans, and essential oils, all of which contribute to their medicinal and therapeutic properties. It exhibits a broad range of pharmacological activities including anti-inflammatory, hypoglycaemic, antiurolithiatic, neuroprotective, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiproliferative, and anticancer effects. UD leaves contain high levels of antioxidants, which may be useful for the treatment of breast cancer by inducing apoptosis. UD extracts exert a protective function by regulating blood glucose levels and β-cell activity, exhibiting insulin-like effects. It also inhibits pro-inflammatory pathways and demonstrates hepatoprotective properties following hepatectomy. UD extract inhibits the proliferation and migration of cancer cells and displays antiviral activity against rotavirus and feline immunodeficiency virus. Furthermore, UD is effective in treating chronic conditions, such as prostatitis, dandruff, and osteoarthritis, thereby reducing the need for conventional medications. Conclusion The diverse uses and biological properties of UD make it a subject of interest for future research.

Abstract:<span><i>Urtica dioica</i> L. (Urticaceae), commonly known as stinging nettle, is an herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the group of phytoalimurgic vegetables, including the wild edible species that were all used in the past when there was a shortage of food. The plant is well known from everybody for the dermatitis it causes when touched, due to biochemical mediators such as histamine and acetylcholine. Recently there was a rediscovery of the plant as food and medicine because of the range of biological activities exhibited such as antirheumatic, anti-infective, immuno-modulatory, anti-hyperglycaemic, and allergy relief. This review, providing a botanical, phytochemical and pharmacological overview of the species, aims to contribute to arouse interest in the scientific community on this promising plant.</span>

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To isolate and identify the chemical constituens in the water-soluable fraction of Urtica fissa with anti-inflammatory and analgestic activity. METHODS Compounds were isolated by a combination of polyester, polyamide and silical gel colum chromatography, and their structures were identified by UV,IR,MS and NMR spectroscopic methods.RESULTS Seven known compounds were isolated from Urticafissa and identified as potassium nitrate(Ⅰ) , isorhamnetin(Ⅱ), kaempferol-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(Ⅲ) , quercetin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (Ⅳ),isorhamnetin-3-O-β-rutinoside(Ⅴ),3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid(Ⅵ),rutin (Ⅶ).CONCLUSION Compound Ⅳ and Ⅴ are isolated from genus Urtica for the first time,compound Ⅱ , Ⅲ , Ⅵ and Ⅶ are obtained from Urtica fissa for the first time.

Abstract:Objective To study the anti-rheumatism fraction in Herba Urticase,and to provide theoretic basis for its further exploitation and utilization.Methods Different fractions were isolated by extraction with different polar solvents,i.e.petroleum,diethy1 ether,ethy1 acetate and aqua.These fractions were screened by anti-inflammatory and analgestic experiments.The inhibition of auricle edema induced by xylene and pain caused by hot board and acetic in mice was used to test the anti-rheumatism effect.Results Four fractions were isolated from Urtica fissa,among which ethy1 acetate part had obvious anti-inflammatory and analgestic effects.It could inhibit the ear edema induced by xylene,granuloma induced by cotton ball and pain caused by hot borad and acetic acid in mice.Conclusion The extraction of ethy1 acetate is the active part with anti-rheumatism effect in Urtica fissa.

Abstract:Dengzhanxixin (DZXX), the dried whole plant of Erigeron breviscapus (Vaniot) Hand.-Mazz., belonging to Compositae and first published in Materia Medica of South Yunnan by Lan Mao in the Ming Dynasty (1368 AD–1644 AD), is included in Medicinal Materials and Decoction Pieces of the 2020 edition of the Pharmacopeia of the People’s Republic of China . Its main chemical components are flavonoids that mainly include flavonoid, flavonols, dihydroflavones, flavonol glycosides, flavonoid glycosides, coffee acyl compounds, and other substances, such as volatile oil compounds, coumarins, aromatic acids, pentacyclic terpenoids, phytosterols, and xanthones. Among them, scutellarin and 1,5-dicoffeoylquininic acid are the main active components of DZXX. DZXX has pharmacological effects, such as improving cerebral and cerebrovascular ischemia, increasing blood flow, inhibiting platelet aggregation, promoting antithrombotic formation, improving microcirculation, reducing blood viscosity, protecting optic nerves, exhibiting anti-inflammatory properties, scavenging free radicals, and eliciting antioxidant activities. It is widely used in the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular ischemic diseases, kidney diseases, liver diseases, diabetic complications, and glaucoma. Pharmacokinetic studies have shown that the active components of DZXX have a low bioavailability and a high elimination rate in vivo. Nevertheless, its utilization can be improved through liposome preparation and combination with other drugs. Acute and subacute toxicity studies have shown that DZXX is a safe medicinal material widely used in clinical settings. However, its target and drug action mechanism are unclear because of the complexity of its composition. In this paper, the clinical application and pharmacological toxicology of DZXX are reviewed to provide a reference for further studying its active components and action mechanism.

Evaluation of Urtica dioica Phytochemicals against Therapeutic Targets of Allergic Rhinitis Using Computational Studies

Abstract:Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a prevalent inflammatory condition affecting millions globally, with current treatments often associated with significant side effects. To seek safer and more effective alternatives, natural sources like Urtica dioica (UD) are being explored. However, UD's mechanism of action remains unknown. Therefore, to elucidate it, we conducted an in silico evaluation of UD phytochemicals' effects on known therapeutic targets of allergic rhinitis: histamine receptor 1 (HR1), neurokinin 1 receptor (NK1R), cysteinyl leukotriene receptor 1 (CLR1), chemoattractant receptor-homologous molecule expressed on type 2 helper T cells (CRTH2), and bradykinin receptor type 2 (BK2R). The docking analysis identified amentoflavone, alpha-tocotrienol, neoxanthin, and isorhamnetin 3-O-rutinoside as possessing a high affinity for all the receptors. Subsequently, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to analyze the key interactions; the free energy of binding was calculated through Generalized Born and Surface Area Solvation (MMGBSA), and the conformational changes were evaluated. Alpha-tocotrienol exhibited a high affinity while also inducing positive conformational changes across all targets. Amentoflavone primarily affected CRTH2, neoxanthin targeted NK1R, CRTH2, and BK2R, and isorhamnetin-3-O-rutinoside acted on NK1R. These findings suggest UD's potential to treat AR symptoms by inhibiting these targets. Notably, alpha-tocotrienol emerges as a promising multi-target inhibitor. Further in vivo and in vitro studies are needed for validation.

Abstract:Objective To study the chemical constituents of the EtOAC soluble fraction from Urtica fissa with obviously anti-inflammatory and analygestic effect. Methods The compounds were isolated by polyamide and silical gel colum chromatography and identified by UV, IR, NMR, and MS. Results Twelve compounds were isolated from U. fissa and identined as quercetin (Ⅰ), kaempferol (Ⅱ), kaempferol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (Ⅲ), quercetin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (Ⅳ), caffeic acid (Ⅴ), chlorogenic acid (Ⅵ), scopolin (Ⅶ), scopoletin (Ⅷ), kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside (Ⅸ), quercetin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (Ⅹ), isorhamnetin-3-O-β-D-rutinoside (Ⅺ), β-sitosterol ( ⅩⅡ ). Conclusion Compounds Ⅰ-Ⅺ are all isolated from U. fissa for the first time and compounds Ⅶ, Ⅹ, and Ⅺ are found in plants of Urtica L. for the first time also.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance Medical Uncariae Ramulus Cum Uncis consists of Uncaria rhynchophylla (Miq.) Miq. ex Havil, Uncaria macrophylla Wall, Uncaria sinensis (Oliv.) Havil, Uncaria hirsuta Havil, and Uncaria sessilifructus Roxb, which belongs to the species widely used in the genus Uncaria . These species resource widely distributed in China and abroad, and the hook-bearing stem is the primary constituent enrichment site. There are many different forms and architectures of chemicals, depending on the extraction site. Traditional remedies employing URCU had been used widely in antiquity and were first compiled in renowned ancient masterpiece 'Mingyi Bielu (名医别录)' written by Hongjing Tao. In modern pharmacological studies, both the total extracts and the phytoconstituents isolated from URCU have been shown to have neuroprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, and autophagy-enhancer properties. Aim of the study This review concentrates on the traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, and nanomaterials studies of URCU, with a perspective to assist with further research and advance. Material and methods The Chinese and English literature studies of this review are based on these database searches including Science Direct, CNKI, Wiley online library, Spring Link, Web of Science, PubMed, Medalink, Google scholar, Elsevier, ACS Publications, iPlant, Missouri Botanical Garden, Plant of the World Online. The pertinent data on URCU was gathered. Results Based on the examination of the genus Uncaria , 107 newly marked chemical compositions have been identified from URCU from 2015 to present, including alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, steroids, and others. Pharmacological studies have demonstrated that URCU has a variety of benefits in diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and migraine, due to its neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. According to metabolic and toxicological studies, the dosage, frequency, and interactions of the drugs that occur in vivo are of great significance for determining whether the organic bodies can perform efficacy or produce toxicity. The research on URCU-mediated nanomaterials is expanding and increasing in order to address the inadequacies of conventional Chinese medicine. The alkaloids in URCU have the capability to self-assemble with other classes of components in addition to being biologically active. Conclusion URCU plants are widely distributed, abundant in chemical constituents, and widely used in both traditional and modern medicine for a variety of pharmacological effects. The utilization of herbal medicines can be raised by assessing the pharmacological distinctions among several species within the same genus and may accelerate the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine. Controlling the concentration of drug administration, monitoring metabolic markers, and inventing novel nanotechnologies are effective strategies for synergistic influence and detoxification to alleviate the main obstacles that toxicity, low bioavailability, and poor permeability. This review can assist further research and advances.

Effects of UV-B Pre-Treatments on Physiological Properties and Accumulation of Active Ingredients in Herbal Plant, Prunella Vulgaris

Abstract:Aim: The effects of UV-B pretreatment on biosynthesis of active ingredients in Prunella vulgaris L. were studied from three aspects: active ingredients, physiological and biochemical parameters and key enzymes of rosmarinic acid metabolism pathway. Methodology: In greenhouse, the seedlings of P. vulgaris were subjected to UV-B treatment for 30 min from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. every day for 10 days and then transplanted to field. After ripening, the leaves were harvested for physiological and biochemical estimations and the expression of key enzyme genes and the contents of active ingredients were measured by ear picking. Results: The results of active ingredient content showed that artificial UV-B radiation increased the contents of phenolic acids and individual flavonoids at mature fruiting stage compared with control plants. Physiological and biochemical results indicated that increase in peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase activities seem to be active responses to alleviate the deleterious effects of UV-B in P. vulgaris. Under UV-B pretreatment, genes related to rosmarinic acid/phenolic acid biosynthesis were significantly (p<0.05) over-expressed at seedling stage of P. vulgaris. Interpretation: This study indicated that UV-B pretreatment in the seedling stage before transplantation to field is effective for inducing phenolic acid and flavonoid accumulation in P. vulgaris ears at mature fruiting stage.
