Abstract:Electrochromic (EC) materials can exhibit reversible changes in their light absorption properties within the entire electromagnetic spectrum via redox reactions induced by the application of a low voltage on the order of a fraction of a volt to a few volts, holding great potential in many commercial applications, including smart windows, rear‐view mirrors, protective eyewear, and electronic paper. Of all EC materials, black EC materials, especially those that can reversibly switch between black and transmissive states, have attracted considerable attention in the research field of electrochromism, because of their significant usefulness for a number of commercial applications especially in smart windows and displays, as well as the tremendous challenges in their preparations and improvements. In recent decades, numerous black EC materials and devices, including neutral‐state black to oxidized‐state transmissive (black‐to‐transmissive) and oxidized‐state transmissive to neutral‐state black (transmissive‐to‐black), have been created in studies. This review focuses on the development of black‐to‐transmissive electrochromism in π‐conjugated polymer‐based EC materials from the perspective of the realization methodology, containing the donor–acceptor approach and physical color mixing strategy. A conclusion and an outlook are presented to point out the challenges and perspectives for further study of black‐to‐transmissive electrochromism in π‐conjugated polymer‐based materials and devices.

Ultra‐high Performance Thermochromic Polymers via a Solid‐solid Phase Transition Mechanism and Their Applications

Abstract:Thermochromic materials are substances that change colour in response to temperature variations. Today, sustainability concerns are the main drivers of thermochromic research, with smart, energy efficient windows being one of primary applications. While vanadium oxides and leuco dyes are traditionally the main thermochromic materials, hydrogels operating based on change of solvation have risen as some of the most promising materials due to their high optical transparency and good solar modulating abilities. In this work, a distinct mechanism for thermochromism arising from the crystalline solid to amorphous solid polymer transition, with a corresponding transition from an opaque state to a transparent state is disclosed. Both ultra‐high optical transparency (Tlum up to 99%) and ultra‐high solar modulation (ΔTsolar up to 87%) were observed. The transition temperature was tunable from 11 to 61 ͦ C by tuning the polymer structure. When incorporated into applications such as greenhouse materials and thermoelectric devices, significant performance enhancement was observed, due to the thermochromic material functioning as a thermal valve, speeding up solar heat absorbance while inhibiting the cooling process via its phase transition. Abstract:Using ethyl cellulose, polyethylene, cyclohexane and Span80 to prepare thermochromic microcapsule by oil phase separation method was presented. The wall of microcapsule was made of ethyl cellulose and polyethylene, whereas the core was made of thermochromatic material (CoCl 2·6H 2O). Cyclohexane and Span80 were used as solvent and emulsifier, respectively. The physical properties of microcapsules were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), biomicroscope and hot stage polarized optical microscopy (HS-POM). And the heat resistance, solvent resistance, chemical stability and polymer compatibility of the thermochromic microencapsules were investigated. Finally, the effects on thermochromism and project performance of the paint in different content of the thermochromic microcapsule were discussed. The results indicate that the mean size of microcapsules is about 4.5 μm, and reversible thermochromic paint has fine performance.

Abstract:For the purpose of extending the color-change range of thermochromic materials, the new thermochromic microcapsules (TCMs) were designed by combining thermochromic materials with optimized dispersive-cationic dyes. Three types of TCMs, which displayed three primary colors of red, yellow and blue when exposed to high temperature, were prepared separately. By color matching with three-primary colors, the matched TCMs could present remarkable thermochromic properties. Especially, with the variety of ambient temperature, the colors of the TCMs could change reversibly between different tones and exhibit more gorgeous colors than common thermochromic materials, which made it possible to solve the problem of the narrow color-change range for common thermochromic material. In this paper, the mechanism of expanding thermochromic colors, thermochromic performances, color matching effects and thermal stabilities of the TCMs and the modified fabrics were investigated. The TCMs were of practical significances for developing thermochromic intelligent textiles.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid halide materials have been gaining tremendous interest due to unique optical, electrical and magnetic properties. However, large bandgap limits their applications. Here, we report a series of organic-inorganic hybrid halide semiconductors, with an exotic and fully reversible thermochromatism, narrow bandgap and near-infrared luminescence. Through precise molecular modification, we successfully adjusted bandgap from 1.910 to 2.120 eV. And then effective temperature-derived bandgap modulation, from 2.120 to 1.590 eV. Changing temperature results in the reversible color between yellow and purple black. The intrinsic bandgap is negligible after repeated heating/cooling cycles, indicating better thermal and environmental stability. Thermochromic behavior of hybrid structures is usually caused by lattice distortion, lattice expansion or ion rearrangement. This work demonstrates that an efficient thermochromism leading to bandgap modulation, and it has great potential in the application of intelligent windows and temperature sensors. In addition, thermochromism induced bandgap narrowing provide new insights for the further of organic-inorganic hybrid halide materials.

Abstract:Photochromic materials are a family of compounds which can undergo reversible photo-switches between two different states or isomers with remarkably different properties. Inspired by their smart photo-switchable characteristics, a variety of light-driven functional materials have been exploited, such as ultrahigh-density optical data storage, molecular switches, logic gates, molecular wires, optic/electronic devices, sensors, bio-imaging and so on. This review commences with a brief description of exciting progress in this field, from systems in solution to modified functional surfaces. Further development of these photo-switchable systems into practical applications as well as existing challenges are also discussed and put in prospect.

Reversible thermochromic microcapsules with SiO 2 shell for indicating temperature and thermoregulation

Abstract:In this study, we successfully designed and synthesized a series of thermochromic phase change microcapsules with different core-shell ratios. Reversible thermochromic phase-change material systems (TC-PCMs) with excellent color-change performance were prepared as the core materials by selecting the components of the three-component thermochromic compound, and then the SiO 2 shell was assembled on the interface of TC-PCMs droplets in oil-water emulsion by interfacial polymerization. The microstructure and chemical composition of the resulting microcapsules were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). SEM images showed that these microcapsules have spherical shape and well-defined core-shell structure. According to differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) tests, these bifunctional microcapsules exhibited excellent heat storage and release properties, high heat storage capacity and good thermal stability. The melting and solidifying enthalpies of microPCMs were 181.3 J/g and 174.5 J/g, respectively. In addition, the resulting microcapsules have good thermochromic reversibility with a color transition temperature of 52 °C. The thermal conductivity of TC-PCMs was enhanced by 132.4 % after loading SiO 2 shells. Furthermore, these microcapsules exceeded the target temperature and successfully achieved the thermochromic function. The bifunctional microcapsules developed in this study have great potential for application in textiles, smart material coatings, luminescent thermal sensors and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:Among the stimuli-responsive materials, thermochromic materials have received tremendous scientific attention. However, traditional organic or inorganic thermochromic materials need a complex preparation process and possess a single performance. Herein, we report a new 1D organic-inorganic hybrid material, lead iodide hybrid, [PbI4 center dot 4-MAPY] (CP-1) (4-MAPY = pyridin-4-ylmethanamine), with line-sharing PbI6 octahedral chains and excellent reversible thermochromic properties (transition between lemon yellow and carmine red). In addition, the results of experimental and theoretical calculations illustrate that [PbI4 center dot 4-MAPY] is an indirect band gap semiconductor, and the band structures are contributed by inorganic chains. Overall, this work might afford a strategy for the detection of new dielectric and thermochromic switchable materials.

Abstract:Organic thermochromic luminescent materials are very promising in applications of thermo-history recording, sensing and anti-counterfeiting. However, the current reported organic thermochromic systems still have the drawbacks of slow responsive speed, low colour contrast and unsatisfactory repeatability. In this paper, we reported a twisted fluorophore based on 1,4-bis[2,2-bisphenyl-vinyl]benzene skeleton with A-D-A structure (OD-CN), which shows strong solvatochromism in solution with emission shifts up to 135 nm, highly efficient red emission in solid state (660 nm, 11.62%) and unprecedented thermochromic behaviour in linear low density polyethylene matrix with high emission contrast (red to greenish yellow), fast responsiveness (within 1 s) and good repeatability (over 10 times). OD-CN doped LLDPE films show potential applications in anti-counterfeiting and as an example, it was applied as multi-channel anti-counterfeiting printings on paper money. What's more, the strategy of blending fluorophores with solvent effects and solid-state emission into apolar polymer matrixes to realize thermochromisms is general.

Abstract:Aiming at the current problems of low enthalpy value and low coverage rate of phase change solvent in thermochromic microcapsules,the bi-functional microcapsules with reversible thermochromic property,and heat storage and temperature regulation properties were prepared by in-situ polymerization using chromogenic agent 2'-chloro-6'-(diethylamino)fluorane,chromogenic agent bisphenol A, and phase change material hexadecanoic acid dodecanol ester as the composite core materials and melamine resin as the wall material. The surface morphology, thermal properties, and discoloration properties of the microcapsules were studied. The results show that when the mass ratio of 2'-chloro-6'-(diethylamino) fluorane, bisphenol A, and hexadecanoic acid dodecanol ester is 0. 3:4:60 and the mass ratio of core to wall materials is 0. 8:1,the prepared microcapsules have smooth and spherical shape,the average particle size is about 3 mu m, the encapsulation rate reaches 86. 4%,the latent heat value is 138. 3 J/g, showing good color recovery after 120 cycles of temperature rising and cooling. After this microcapsules are applied on cotton fabrics by screen printing,the latent heat value of the printed fabric can reach 9. 74 J/g, and the fast reversible color change from red to white in the range of 25-40. can be achieved,exhibiting good heat storage temperature regulating property and thermal color changing response property.

Abstract:Photochromic materials have drawn enormous attention for their potential applications in optical memory storage and photoswitchable molecular devices. Although great achievements for photochromic materials have been fulfilled, it is still a big challenge to realize gated photochromism for ready tunable photochromic properties. In previous studies, rare examples of gated photochromism are reported. Herein, three triarylethylene derivatives FTrPE-oI, ClTrPE-oI and BrTrPE-oI with reversible thermally activated photochromic characteristics are designed and synthesized, whose crystalline powders show no photochromism until thermally activated treatments to relative temperature. Temperature acts as a gate to switch the photochromic properties by switching the aggregation state from crystalline to melted amorphous. With this progress, a broader structural realm becomes accessible for gated photochromic materials, which can now be synthetically tailored for advanced future applications, e.g., in research on gated molecular machines and switches, in studies of photoisomerization mechanisms, or in the generation of thermal tracing materials. To showcase the potential of these distinct thermally activated photochromic materials, their applications in encrypted thermal printing, thermal trace monitoring as well as multi-level anticounterfeiting are demonstrated, in addition to a comprehensive photochemical study of all compounds. Developing gated photochromic in organic molecules has tremendous application potential in many fields. Here, a series of triphenylethylene derivatives is successfully developed to realize thermally activated photochromism by efficiently manipulating the intermolecular interactions. With this progress, a suggestive molecular designing strategy is provided to achieve next-generation functionalized photochromic materials toward widespread applications in material science fields. image

Colorless to Multicolored, Fast Switching, and Highly Stable Electrochromic Devices Based on Thermally Cross-Linking Copolymer

Abstract:Transparent-to-colored electrochromic devices exhibit promising application prospects and have gained popularity. Herein, two triphenylamine derivatives TPA-OCH3 and TPA-CN with styryl moieties and different donor or acceptor units were designed and synthesized to further prepare solvent-resistant thermally cross-linking polymer P(TPA-OCH3) and P(TPA-CN) without any additional initiator. P(TPA-OCH3) and P(TPA-CN) possess two pairs of redox peaks, and P(TPA-OCH3) shows a lower onset oxidation potential compared to P(TPA-CN) because of the pendent donor unit. Correspondingly, both polymers exhibit multicolored changes from the neutral colorless state to noticeable oxidized colors under different potentials. Furthermore, the thermally cross-linking copolymer P(TPA-OCH3-co-TPA-CN) was obtained by TPA-OCH3 and TPA-CN (the molar ratio is 2:1) and presents outstanding electrochromism with four color changes (colorless-orange-blue-purple) due to the multistep redox process of TPA-OCH3 and TPA-CN units. It is more intriguing that the electrochromic device based on the copolymer films possesses a high optical contrast of 57.8% at 680 nm, fast switching time (0.52 and 0.66 s), and robust cyclic stability over 30 000 cycles with very little decay. Therefore, the thermally cross-linking copolymer is a promising candidate material for high-performance transmittive electrochromic devices, such as smart windows, sunglasses, and E-papers.
