Abstract:Objective: To analysis the hazards and discuss how to prevent them associated with the biopsies of primary malignant bone tumors. Methods:The misdiagnoses and complications with the biopsy procedures in 236 patients with primary malignant bone tumors in our hospital (including 23 patients who were biopsed in other hospitals prior to be admitted to our hospital)from Jan.1989 to June 1998 were analysed. Results:The study showed the 33 biopsies (13.89%)resulted in inaccurate diagnoseis, and 12 biopsies were considered to be nonrepresentative or poorly performed. There were complications of biopsies 24 cases(10.17%).According to the data, the problems associated with biopsies affected on the overall treatment courses in 25 patients (10.59%).As the results of biopsies, unnecessary amputations were performed in 7 patients (of whom,5 cases were biopsed in other hospitals),the definitive surgeries were delayed in 6 cases, undertreatment surgeries necessitating the second wider resection were operated in 4 patients, while in 8 cases incorrect adjuvant chemotherapy was administrated. Conclusions:The data revealed the biopsy of bone tumors was an inherent difficult procedure with a high rate of risks, and the fault appears to lie with the disease itself and the inexperience of the surgeon. The biopsy of bone tumors should be done more carefully. If the orthopaedist or other practitioner,or the hospital is not equipped to perform accurate diagnostic studies or next treatment,it is in the patient's best interest to be referred to a tumor center before performance of the biopsy.
