A Time Geographical Framework and Prospect of Urban Ageing Study

Abstract:The 21st century sees that urban ageing problem becomes a focus worldwide and the researching topic of many subjects. After comparing the research approach applied in sociology with that applied in geography, this paper proposes to introduce the approach of time-geography into the study of urban ageing problem, to form the fundamental research framework. By focusing on the individual spatial behavior and city structure of the elderly people, time-geography rethinks urban ageing problem from a spatial perspective at the micro level. Combined with social gerontology's macro level focus, the attention at micro level would give an integral understanding and explanation of urban ageing study. This cross-disciplinary interaction will fertile in the research for solution to the urban ageing problem. On this basis, this paper also describes the practical future of time-geography applying in the fields such as the time and space management of urban elderly service, the welfare service for the elderly, the elderly community study, etc.
