Abstract:An analytic model of optimal financing contract was developed for venture companies,which takes the non-currency earnings,entrepreneurial spirit,realizability of investor's control right and its realizing cost as the main influencing factors on the optimal financing contract of a venture company. The influence of the disposition of control right on the financing structure of a venture company was discussed so as to propose the possible measures to take for improving its financing efficiency. The results showed that an effective financial market,bankrupt mechanism and guarantee system to ensure the control right of investors are crucial to the financing efficiency. To play the role of the control right on financial contracting,the following measures are advised to take,i.e.,reduce the non-currency earnings of entrepreneur and the control right realizing cost of investors,and enhance the realizability of investors' control right and the guaranteed value of company assets.

Abstract:Capital structure is one of the most important research fields in corporate finance and investment. However,the studies on capital structure can not make break through under the structure of MM theorems framework. Some researchers import kinds of factors exogenously to explain the realistic problems and can not form a uniform and powerful theoretical system. This article starts with the limitations of MM theorems. Firstly,the hypothesis that firms can borrow with risk free rate is impossible in the real world. Secondly,MM theorems indicate that firm value is unaffected by capital struc-ture in the case without corporation tax,and firms prefer 100% debt ratio in the case with corporation tax,which are not consistent with actual situations. Finally,MM theorems’ deductions use arbitrage analysis,which induces the doubt that why the managers who pur-sue maximization of firm’s value do not adopt the optimal capital structure and allow the presence of arbitrage opportunities. Then this article points out the risk asymmetry between debt and equity because debt should be priced by total risk of the firm while equity should be priced by diversified risk in capital market. It induces the changes of debt cost and equity cost can not offset when the capital structure alters,which make firm value changes with capital structure and an optimal capital structure definitely exist. Based on this idea,this article acquires the optimal capital structures in both cases with and without corporation tax through minimizing the weighted average capital costs. These results are very different from MM theorems. The optimal capital structure is entire equity financ-ing or a debt ratio between 0 and 100%,which depends on the inter-section point of security market line and vertical axis. Finally,this article discusses the factors influencing the optimal capital structure through comparative static analysis and numerical analysis,which shows the optimal debt ratio decreases with the increasing of the firm’s risk and debt maturity,and the decreasing of the expected re-turn of market zero-beta portfolio and corporation tax rate.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine whether corporate ownership affects corporate capital structure. This study also seeks to find out whether there is difference in dynamics of the capital structure between these two groups of firms. Design/methodology/approach - Based on panel data of China's listed firms from 1998 to 2007, this paper employs a static empirical model to validate the difference in capital structure between these two groups of firms, and then, a dynamic empirical model is used to explore the dynamic adjustment of the capital structure. Findings - The empirical results show that there is structural difference in static capital structure between state-owned and private listed firms. Further study results tell us that the adjustment to an optimal capital structure is to be faster for the private firm than for the state-owned firm. Practical implications - The findings suggest that compared with state-owned firms, private firms face higher financial friction in financing activities, but have more incentive to adjust toward optimal capital structure to maximize the shareholders' benefit. This study offers insights to corporate managers interested in privatization, when a state-owned firm is privatized, that firm becomes subject to the disciplining forces of the market and more active to pursue maximum market value of the firm, thus the adjustment to an optimal capital structure to be faster for private firm than for state-owned firm. Originality/value - This paper for the first time looks at the influence of ownership on capital structure, from both static and dynamic perspective. And this study is helpful for regulators, and corporate managers to understand the corporate financial management behavior.

Abstract:Through path analysis based on structural equation modeling approach,this paper conducts an empirical study on the effect path of micro-determinants of capital structure in Chinese listed companies.First of all,the paper discusses the specifying process of determinants,and chooses the feasible financial indicators to measure these determinants.Secondly,with path analysis,the direct effect is successfully separated from the indirect effect of firm’s operating characteristics on their capital structures,by virtue of intermediate variables.Finally,it concludes that different dimensions of firms’ operating characteristics would have diverse effect paths on their debt ratios.

Abstract:In order to reconsider the changes of adjustment speed caused by the recapitalization cost, this research adopted dynamic capital structure theory with adjustment speed as one of the independent variables to analyze the relationship between capital structure and company performance. Instead of applying the commonly used regression models, this research used the decision tree C4.5 algorithm and association rules of priori algorithm. Taking the predictive models created by the decision tree as the main result and supporting it with association rules which help to explain the relationships between capital structure and company performance, this research shows how capital structure influences company performance. As the result presents, a company tends to have better performance when its debt ratio is low, and Tobin’s Q and ROA will turn worse as the ratio gets higher. However, maybe because of the financial leverage, ROE will not decrease when the ratio is high but will increase instead. In addition, this research found out that adjustment speed is negatively related to company performance, meaning that even though a company is more flexible in adjusting itself, it might still perform badly since it is deviating from its optimum leverage. This research found that not only capital structure, but other variables such as price-earnings ratio, research and development expense ratio, and dividend payout ratio also determine a company’s performance.

An Empirical Test on Two Main Hypotheses of Capital Structure

Abstract:This paper tests the two hypotheses of capital structure-tradeoff theory and pecking order theory with data from Chinese stock market. We find that neither tradeoff theory nor pecking order theory can explain the capital structures of the listed companies in China. There is no hint that the listed companies would choose a target capital structure and move toward it continuously. The companies do not show any preference on debt financing. Therefore, the capital structure of the listed companies in China may be affected by the factors other than these two hypotheses.

Abstract:The paper constructs a two-way effects dynamic adjustment model,adopts panel data of Chinese non-financially listed companies and applies generalized method of moments(GMM) to empirically analyze how non-financial stakeholders(such as suppliers,customers and employees) affect the choice of capital structure from a dynamic perspective for the first time.The study finds that: ①The target capital structure doses exist in Chinese listed companies in China,and the adjustment cost of debt is an important factor affecting the choice of capital structure.②Generally speaking,the managers of Chinese listed companies seldom take the interest of the non-financial stakeholders into account while making decisions of capital structure.

Abstract:In the context of growing economic uncertainty, capital structure optimization is becoming a critical tool for minimizing financial risks, providing companies with the necessary stability and adaptability in modern conditions. This paper aims to develop theoretical foundations for the existing capital structure optimization methods and elaborate an optimal capital structure formation strategy to ensure companies’ financial stability and flexibility in conditions of high financial uncertainty. The article offers a stabilization-flexible approach to optimizing companies’ capital structure in financial instability and crises, making it possible to ensure the companies’ financial stability while preserving their ability to adapt to a volatile environment quickly. The main idea of the approach is the balanced use of equity capital and long-term and short-term liabilities to finance various components of assets, which helps to minimize risks and increase the efficiency of financial management. A roadmap for the implementation of the stabilization-flexible approach to optimizing the capital structure has been formed, the basis of which is the construction of a logical chain of actions, including the definition of companies’ goals, the assessment of available financial resources and risks, and the development of financing strategies, their implementation, further control and monitoring of results. The study results can be helpful for financial managers, analysts, and investors seeking to improve the efficiency of capital management and reduce the impact of external and internal risks on the financial condition of companies.

Abstract:The authors put forward that, with the help of game theory, the equili brium path about principal-agent problem is studied on the condition of perfect information, complete information and its asymmetry. Furthermore, the authorstry to find out the optimum choice and key equation for each side under pareto con ditions, meanwhile they draw out a conclusion that market mechanism imperfection and loss-of-credit will lead both sidesoff the correct path. The authors also points out that information asymmetry has great impact on principal-agent. And the perfect record of managers' credit and honesty and the encouragement of opera tors' devotion to their duties is the considerable solution to this problem.

Abstract:Based on the financial constraints, industry evolvement and the special shareholder structures, this paper establishes there hypotheses, which are the hypothesis of complementing and substi- tuting function of debt and equity, the hypothesis of industry evolve- ment and corporate strategy, and the hypothesis of shareholder struc- ture. This paper tests the three hypothesis using cross-sectional time series data of 376 listed companies publicly listed by the end of 1997. We find evidence that equity financing complements debt financing, as well as substitutes it. Output market competition affect the long- term debt and trade payables significantly, but in a different way. We find no evidence that the ratio of state owned shares or tradable shares affect the capital structure. But the short-term debt ratio and the total debt ratio are negatively related to the ratio of shares held by the largest shareholders.

Abstract:It is hypothesized in MM theorem and its revision that liability produce tax deductibility effect, so the larger the debt rate is, the larger the corporate value. That is to say, corporations should have as much debt as possible. The biggest drawback of this theory lies in the fact that it does not consider the possibility of bankruptcy due to the increase of the debt. The existence of bankruptcy cost will partly or totally offset the tax deductibility effect. As a result, the corporate financial leverage will be restrained. So it does not mean that the higher the debt rate is, the better the corporation is. The capital structure of a company can be optimized only when a balance is struck between income interest tax, and the sum of bankruptcy cost and agency cost.

Abstract:Since the formulation of the Miller and Modigliani propositions over 60 years ago, financial economists have been debating whether there is such a thing as an optimal capital structure—a proportion of debt to equity that can be expected to maximize long‐run shareholder value. Some finance scholars have followed M&M in arguing that both capital structure and dividend policy are irrelevant in the sense of having no significant, predictable effects on corporate market values. Another school of thought holds that corporate financing choices reflect an attempt by corporate managers to balance the tax shields and disciplinary benefits of more debt against the costs of financial distress. Still another theory says that companies do not have capital structure targets, but instead follow a financial pecking order in which retained earnings are generally preferred to outside financing, and debt is preferred to equity when outside funding is required. In reviewing the evidence that has accumulated since M&M, the authors argue that taxes, bankruptcy and other contracting costs, and information costs all appear to play important roles in corporate financing decisions. While much, if not most, of the evidence is consistent with the idea that companies set target leverage ratios, there is also considerable support for the pecking order theory's contention that managements are willing to deviate widely from their targets for long periods of time. According to the authors, the key to reconciling the different theories—and thus to solving the capital structure puzzle—lies in achieving a better understanding of the relation between corporate financing stocks (that is, total amounts of debt and equity) and flows (which security to issue at a particular time). Even when companies have leverage targets, it can make sense to deviate from those targets depending on the costs associated with moving back toward the target. And as the authors argue in closing, a complete theory of capital structure must take account of these adjustment costs and how they affect expected deviations from the targets.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to find whether there is a strict relationship between corporate capital structure adjustment and corporate financing friction .This paper builds a financing model with market regulation and uses a computer simulation method to examine the effects of equity financing regulation friction on company ’ s target capital structure and the adjustment of capital structure .At the same time , it also tests the applicability of the capital structure adjustment model .The results show that the change of external equity financing frictions is not only an important influencing factor on the target capital structure , but also an important factor on the adjust-ment speed of company ’ s capital structure , which provides a unique view to observe the financing friction of cap-ital market .In addition , the test on the existing model of the capital structure adjustment tells us that the model widely used by previous authors ignores a strong constraint between variables , which will lead to serious model specification bias .

Abstract:The goal of this study is to optimize a company's capital structure by modelling and programming the required equations in the components of weighted average cost of capital. This process will be carried out in the programming language Python, and then Monte Carlo simulation will be applied to increase the number of combinations of debt and equity in the capital structure and obtain more accurate results on the Qatar gas transport company. Throughout various scenarios and outcomes, the study seeks to determine the ideal capital structure that reduces both the firm's weighted average cost of capital and the risk to which the Qatar gas transport company will be exposed. The suggested method offers a practical instrument for managers and investors to make well-informed decisions when they apply financial strategies to optimize the company's financial performance. Debt and equity are considered the main parts in the capital structure in every company, and if we can solve the problems connected to these two parts, we can optimize performance. The code of the programming language (Python) used in this study depends on logical discussion to compare different results. This research also will pay attention to the whole probabilities of debt and equity ratios in the Qatar Gas Transport Company. This research considers more variables in the analysis to obtain more accurate results about the firm's financial status. The results in this research show that the cost of capital in the Qatar Gas Transport Company will be reduced to 5% (currently 6%) if the percentage of debt and equity in the capital structure is changed to 79% and 21%, respectively. In comparison with the other 9999 components of capital structure, this ratio (79%, 21%) will be the optimal one. The scatterplot reflects that the more repeated values of weighted average cost of capital were located around the value of 5%. This fact can enable us to conclude that the minimum value of WACC is 5%, even though there are lower values of WACC than 5%, but at a lower frequency than that of values of 5%. The study's results are anticipated to introduce additional findings to help other authors to understand the mechanism of optimizing the capital structure and reduce the risk in the gas and oil sector.
