Abstract:While the mid Northern Song dynasty was a period during which culture thrived in north China and rose rapidly in the south,the last years of the dynasty witnessed a polarization of the two: the north was losing its cultural prestige whereas the south became more and more important.An analysis of the development of various cultural elements in the period shows that,while the north was still the center of Confucianism,most of the elites in politics,literature and education were in the south.

Abstract:The founders of Neo-Confucianism, Chengs and their disciples, in the Song dynasty predicted twice that the country’s cultural center would move to the Southeast. Confucianism in the South had fully developed while Northern Song dynasty was in its heyday. Song Court was forced to move to the Southeast by the touch-and-go situation, hence its fate. With the capital relocated at Lin’an, the political center moved there, and quickly the cultural center followed the suit. The resurgence in Southern Song dynasty laid political foundation for the shift of cultural center. Emperor Gaozong followed Northern Song’s system in planning the cultural reconstruction in the Southeast. Neo-Confucianism was employed to adorn political tactics in cultural construction. Academically, politics in Song dynasty wandered between Xinxue by Wang Anshi and Luoxue by Chengs, which entangled with each other and were prominent in turns. Therefore, the attitude toward Neo-Confucianism became the focus of dispute, on which cultural center is based. Southern Song dynasty was content to retain sovereignty over half of the territory, and tried to attain resurgence and prosperity with Neo-Confucianism, resulting in the irresolution between the two doctrines, and causing its people more coward and reluctant to recover the lost land.

Abstract:The concepts of China and ″Sifang(all sides)″ during the age of The Book of Songs represent geopolitical thought of the Zhou Dynasty that China was located at the center of the world.This conceptualization is also reflected in The Book of Songs.The hypothesis that the ″Folk Songs of State Chen″ is the most representative branch amongst the Southern China's folk songs can be proved by recognizing the territory of Southern China during the age of The Book of Songs.The interpretations concerning Zhounan and Shaonan in Maozhuan and Zhengjian inherited and extended the political memory of Emperor Wen of the Zhou Dynasty's moral governance,reflecting the thought which regards the Northern China as the cultural center.Maozhuan and Zhenjian's explanations of the ″Folk Songs of State Chu″ neglected in The Book of Songs as well as the ignorance of the ″Folk Songs of State Chen″,show that Maozhuan and Zhenjian's ideas deviated from the recognition of the Southern China territory during the age of The Book of Songs.This also represents the geopolitical thought of the distinction between Chinese and the uncivilized ethics.

Abstract:Using several conditions such as the special administrative systems, geographical positions, and level of economic development of different regions within Northern Song and Southern Song territory, we can divide Song territory into several "comprehensive political regions." The method of dividing the comprehensive political regions and the relations between the regions greatly differed during the Northern and Southern Song, however, and they thereby formed two completely different political geographies. The various comprehensive political regions that made up Northern Song territory had significant differences in their functions of contributing to political power and were mainly combined through division of labor to form a "ring" structure. The mutual reliance between the regions benefited the central gathering of power, but it was difficult for them to fight for themselves, so they often were defeated by outside forces. The comprehensive political regions of the Southern Song each had their own independent conditions for survival and were political regions that exercised similar functions in different positions, therefore they formed a "block" structure. This kind of structure improved the country's ability to respond to foreign wars, but it had weak domestic cohesion, and its centralized power was far inferior to that of the Northern Song.
A Research on Towns in Chuzhou of Zhejiang in Song Dynasty

Abstract:Song Dynasty is a critical period of transition in ancient city development. During that period,the springing up of fairs laid a solid foundation for the later emergence and development of market towns. In the Northern Song Dynasty,fairs sprung up across the country and Chuzhou was by no means an exception. In the Southern Song Dynasty,the number of fairs increased significantly and some fairs developed into market towns with the capital city of the dynasty moving southward and the subsequent transfer of the political center of the state. Meanwhile,the celadon kilns at Longquan entered a period of rapid development,which endowed the market towns in Chuzhou a distinctive feature of ceramic handicraft. Based on previous studies and archaic literatures,this paper investigates the emergence and development of the market towns in Chuzhou from both the perspectives of natural and human factors. The result indicates that as the consequence of the combined impact from the vicissitudes of dynasties,the decline of the celadon industry and the limitation of geographical location,only two towns,namely,Gushi and Huzhen have lasted to date,regardless of the fact that the towns in Chuzhou used to develop very fast owing to the superior social conditions and the development of celadon industry in the Southern Song Dynasty. A close exploration reveals that human and policy factors had a greater effect on the rise and decline of the towns in Chuzhou.

Abstract:It is widely accepted that became a kind of administrative unit during the Five Dynasties.Then jun was absorbed into the administrative system in the Song Dynasty——the government set many juns while it continued to use some set during the over-passed dynasties.Jun was subjected to zhou in the Five Dynasties,but most of the juns in the Song Dynasty were coordinative to zhou.The evolution of the juns in the Song Dynasty mainly took place during the period of Northern Song.It could be found out that the factors that caused the evolution of the juns are various after analyzing the evolution of such juns in the period.And based on the analysis,we could consider jun coordinative to zhou a substitute for zhou: when the government needed to set a high-grade administrative unit in some place,it would set a jun instead of a zhou if the qualifications to set a zhou weren't enough.

Abstract:Studies of the Song Dynasty gradually gained esteem among Republican scholars,but the scholars who admired Song studies the most,such as Chen Yinque and Fu Sinian,hardly ever actually wrote articles on the Song Dynasty.They just took the Song as a commanding height from which to research various important issues raised by the entirety of Chinese history and culture,such as the origin of "Song Learning," the historiography of the Song,and the New Song Learning,touching off long-running discussions among scholars in all fields.Therefore,we should make clear the differences and connections between Song history,Song Learning,the historiography of the Song Dynasty,and Song intellectuals and scholarship.It is also inappropriate to break up the study of Song history and Song intellectuals,scholarship and culture into separate academic disciplines.In particular we must avoid differentiating between classics and history,or between historical data and historical views.We should give lectures on Song Learning and research Han Learning.On the one hand,to research Song history,one must be conversant with Song Learning,just as to research a nation's history,one must be conversant with the essence of that nation's culture.On the other hand,historicizing abstruse ideas such as righteousness and rites is a reasonable and verifiable project.We should take the cultures of the Northern and Southern Song dynasties as our vantage point from which we set out to thoroughly understand the length and breadth of all history and culture,ancient and modern,domestic and foreign.We must study systematically and without bias,and not limit ourselves to the period of the Song Dynasty if we wish to achieve the heights of the New Song Learning and create a new climate for Chinese scholarship and culture.

Abstract:This chapter examines the role and significance of a unified script and Mandarin Chinese for the political and cultural formation of ancient China. From the Qin dynasty on, the bureaucracy was staffed by intellectual elites selected from their localities but sharing a unified script system and approximately similar pronunciation. The forms of writing and pronunciation, therefore, became a crucial part of China's “cultural constitution.” The chapter shows how the script and its two aspects, reading and speaking, were unified. It considers the Qin dynasty's unification of the script system, based on the judgment that the standardization of Chinese characters became the basis of China's bureaucratic governance. It also discusses the constitutional significance of a unified speech, how Mandarin Chinese was maintained and spread, and how a unified script integrated the scholar-officials in different geographical locations in a transgenerational cultural community.

Abstract:This research conducted a broad examination on the subjects of Ci works. All the writers who created Ci works for 50~ 60 years, in the early period of the Song Dynasty, were royal high officials and literary men of the upper class. It can be identified that most of works that they composed were xiaoling (a short lyrical poem) without almost breaking the poetry style of Late Tang and Five Dynasties. The poetry style is relatively simple. The poetic imagery takes on the clear, neat, and beautiful hue. Another characteristic of the works is that they subjectively focused on individual true feeling and deep thoughts, adopting Ci's weak and soft tone. Consequently, specific poetry style and flow were not established, for decades of the early period of the Song Dynasty when the Ci circles were not active. The poetry creation pattern of ‘composing Ci like a poetry’, creation criteria of feeling and setting successfully blended in the poem, and a long poem of unhurried rhythm in the initial period presented an elementary framework for establishing the heyday of the Ci circles of the Buksong Era. It can be identified above all that the clear, novel, and soft poetry style that the literary Ci pursued in the early period of the Song Dynasty, served for not a few motive for developing the Ci of the Song Dynasty.

Abstract:Abstract Naitō Konan’s hypothesis on the “Tang-Song transition” was first expressed in lecture notes from his 1909 class on modern Chinese history at Kyoto University and, then, expounded in subsequent works such as “A General View of the Tang and Song Dynasties” and “Modern Chinese History.” The theory systematically outlines that an evolutionary medieval to modern transition occurred in Chinese society during the period between the Tang and the Song dynasties, focusing in particular on the areas of politics/government, the economy, and culture. Political change is regarded as the core metric, demonstrated in concentrated form by the government’s transformation from an aristocratic to a monarchical autocratic system alongside a rise in the status and position of the common people. The “Tang-Song transition theory,” underpinned theoretically by a cultural-historical perspective, advocates for a periodization of Chinese history based on the stages and characteristics of China’s cultural development, which is also attributed to cultural shifts, downward to the commoner class from a culture monopolized by the aristocracy during the period between the Tang and Song, with concomitant changes in society. For over a century since it was first proposed, the “Tang-Song transition theory” has had far-reaching influence in Chinese, Japanese, and Western academic circles, continuing to be lively and vigorous even now. We might be able to find the cause in its originality and liberality, which leave significant room for later thinkers’ continued adherence and development or criticism and falsification and continue to inspire new questions. Naitō’s proposal was also intimately connected to his observations of China’s circumstances in the late Qing dynasty and early Republican period, which also provided a “sample of the era” regarding realistic approaches to historical studies.

Abstract:Since the 17th century,the cities,market towns and rural areas of the lower Yan-gtze River had gone through many changes,the core of which dwelt in the Taihu Lake plain,the basic economic zone of Qing dynasty.Wusong River,a key drainage artery of the Taihu Lake, mattering a lot from the ruler's perspectives,had only been generally studied in the framework of the local water control system so far.However,owing to the influences imposed by such factors as channel silting,water conservancy reconstruction and the economic imbalance of surrounding industries,the social life of the tow ns in the Wusong River basin varied greatly,from the up-stream Taihu Lake to the Baoshan County which was located at the estuary.For the local gentries in the Qing Dynasty,the southern region of the Wusong River,mainly clustered by the three or-dinary market towns,Gaoqiao,Jiwangmiao and Zhudi,formed a conceptual district called"Song-nan".With the common economic conditions and the relative hardship of people's livelihood,"Songnan"was never a well -off region endowed with scenic spots and men of talents.The rural settlement of"Songnan"should generally belong to the upland's rural society.Separated by the Wusong River,the regional order and the political situation of the life in"Songnan"failed to co-ordinate with those in the northern part of the watershed.Since a huge gap existed between the two regions,obvious distinctions could also be found in their living states and economic condi-tions.

Abstract:Taking the conception and model of the regional gravity center and adopting the data collecting from each province (city or district) from 1978 to 2002, this paper calculates the population gravity center and the social economy gravity center yearly, figures out the dynamic evolvements of these two gravity centers and analyzes the dynamic change of the population and economy regional differences and their related causes and at the same time, makes a contrastive analysis of the dynamic evolvement tendencies of the two gravity centers. The results show that the population gravity center makes a slow and steady move to southwest China since the opening up and reform of the country, which indicates that the population distribution tends to equilibrium in the longitude direction, however, it is disequilibrium in the latitude direction. GDP gravity center also moves to southwest China from 1978 to 1991, which indicates that the economic development differences are lessening in the longitude direction, however they are widening in the latitude direction. From 1991 to 2002, the GDP center moves to the southeast, which indicates that the economy regional development differences are widening both in the latitude direction and the longitude direction. The secondary industry gravity center also moves to southwest, which indicates that the differences in the longitude direction is lessening, however it is a little widening in the latitude direction. But the third industry and the social consumption centers move to southeast all the while, which indicates that differences are widening in both directions. However the first industry dose not show obvious change because the first industry mainly consists of the agriculture industry and the whole agriculture development level is low. The agriculture production depends on much natural condition, which leads to the randomicity of the agriculture distribution. Against the geometry center of China, the regional differences in general are widening. Against the population center, the social economy takes on imbalanced development in the longitude direction; however it tends to balance in the latitude direction.

Abstract:Essay One: The Diffusion of Cultural Traits: Migration and Human Capital in Late Imperial China, 960-1643 This paper argues that the role of cultural difference between regions in accumulation of human capital falls under the process of culture diffusion. Using unique province-level data from Song to Ming China (960-1643), we find that the spatial difference in cultural traits measured by genetic distance (calculated by surnames), a measure associated with the time elapsed since two populations’ last common ancestors, has a strong positive effect on differences in human capital (measured by the number of palace degree-holders (Jishi)) between regions, even controlling for measures of educational and socioeconomic differences, and geographical factors. We further provide a mechanism linking cultural diffusion and great migration in China’s history to explain differences in human capital, namely, that the flow of population promotes cultural diffusion and reduces differences in culture between regions.

Abstract:Immigrants to Lin'an, the capital city of the Southern Song Dynasty, may be classified into three groups: those from the North at the turn of the Northern and the Southern Song Dynasty, new comers from the North and the Northeast in the Southern Song, and those from the South. Influenced by the native cultures of these immigrants, a merging of cultures occurred in Lin'an. The indigenous southern culture experienced a shift to a culture based on northern characteristics with northern nomadic influences. However, the local culture of Lin'an finally evolved into one that was based mainly on southern characteristics yet bore some influences from northern traditions of the remote past.

Abstract:This article analyzes the geographical distribution of poets in Song China based on Complete Song Poetry (Quansongshi), which includes poems from over 9000 poets, with 6056 of them having clear native place. Visualization strategy is used to present the geographical distribution of these 6056 poets, and its formation factors are also analyzed. The results reveal that majority of the poets come from Zhejiang, Henan and Sichuan provinces, with Guangdong province also exceeding a hundred poets despite its remote location. In the central area of Ningbo, Luoyang and Meishan, there are also large distribution of the poets. Over time, the density of poets in the south increases while it decreases in the north, and this pattern becomes more pronounced as time progresses. By employing visualization strategy, we aim to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the geographical distribution of poets of Complete Song Poetry in Song Dynasty to reflect the cultural, economic, and political development of Song China.

Abstract:The processes and mechanisms of cultural evolution provide helpful insights into the origin and development of civilizations. This study analyses data from the national archaeological survey using kernel density analysis, a geospatial tool provided by ArcGIS10 software, to explore the spatiotemporal pattern of cultural evolution from the beginning of the Yangshao cultural period to the Bronze Age in the Yellow River basin. Agricultural development and the environmental background of this region were reconstructed using published flotation materials and high-resolution paleoclimate records. The results indicate that cultural expansion and differentiation from Yangshao (7000–5000 BP) to Longshan period (4600–4000 BP) are responding to the establishment and strengthening of millet-based agriculture and the appearance of multiple subsistence strategies in the context of environmental deterioration. To the Bronze Age, the center of sites accumulates to the Central Plains and Shandong, in contrast to the continuous cultural expansion and differentiation. The opposite circumstance may result from early urbanization along with the formation of a social system with high centralization of power.

Abstract:The term "geopolitics" is commonly understood as a particular mode of visualizing space,states,and the relationships between them.Geopolitical models always take the form of mapping by emphasizing the strategic importance of particular places.The principles of geopolitics,especially the heartland theory from Halford Mackinder,can be employed to analyze Chinese history,in which the territory suffered many times of splits and unification.Both the geographical pivot and heartland are in the Central Plains comprising the middle and lower reaches of the Huanghe River.The pivot has been defined by the ancient students of China such as Sima Qian.If we link Luoyang and Anyang in Henan Province and Huozhou in Shanxi Province with line segment to form a triangle on a map,the circumcircle of the small triangle gives the pivotal location of Chinese history.Further,if we link Beijing,Xi'an and Nanjing,the well-known ancient capitals in the history of China,to form a geographical Einthoven's Triangle on a map,the inscribed circle of the great triangle gives the bounds of the heartland.When the ancient Chinese statesmen were in conversation with the defeated enemy,some lovely airy cherub should have whispered to them from time to time this saying: "Who rules Pivot controls the heartland;Who rules the heartland commands the Great Central Plains;Who rules the Great Central Plains commands the whole country of China." Geographical factor is not the first most important determinant of national security,but it is very important,especially under specified spatio-temporal conditions.Therefore,it is significant to reveal the natural seats of power in a country in order to explain the past,understand the present,and predict the future.

Abstract:Writing on the same subject by multi writers has a long history in China,and in the early period it was generally confined to the context of scholar assembly.But in Tang and Song Dynasty,it began to frequently appear at non-assembly occasions.As the works with a certain subject such as Ming Fei Qu,Chao Ran Tower,Qian Qiu Sui,and Zhong Xing Stele in Northern Song Dynasty have showed,the existence of this phenomenon was not only based on the convenience of information transmission but also closely connected to the development of scholar-bureaucrats' group expression: starting from the circle of friends,with mutual recognition in political standing and literary fashion,till open to the public;from the intentional invitation and organization to spontaneous singing and harmony;from occasional emotion echo to voluntary discussion from different angles with different themes.All these make clear that the scholar-bureaucrats were generally related to each other by literature and paid close attention to contemporary literary circles.
