Abstract:Electrowetting display (EWD) has promising prospects in the electronic paper industry due to it having superior characteristics, such as the ability to provide a comfortable reading experience and quick response. However, in real applications, there are also problems related to dielectric deterioration, excess power consumption, optical instability and narrow color gamut etc. This paper reviewed the existing challenges and recent progress made in terms of improving the optical performance and reliability of EWD. First, the principle of electrowetting applied in small and confined configurations is introduced and the cause of the failure of the dielectric layer is analyzed. Then, the function of the pixel structures is described to avoid display defects. Next, electric signal modulations are compared in terms of achieving good image quality and optical stability. Lastly, the methods are presented for color panel realization. It was concluded that multi-layer dielectrics, three-dimensional pixel structures, proper electric frequency-and-amplitude modulation and an RGB color panel are expected to resolve the current limitations and contribute to designing advanced reflective displays.

Abstract:Capitalizing on their unique bistable and reflective attributes, electrophoretic displays (EPDs) provide a paper-like viewing experience with remarkably low power usage. This has driven their broad application across various fields, including eye-friendly E-readers, energy-saving electronic labels, cutting-edge wearable technology, outdoor displays, and intelligent low-power devices. In this study, a dynamic multiwaveform invocation and local time-division refresh (LTDR) technology are introduced. On the one hand, we compressed and modified traditional driving waveform to various extents first, forming optimized traditional driving waveform, fast driving waveform, and speed driving waveform. Subsequently, high-frequency oscillation waveform was incorporated into the fast driving waveform, and a variety of waveforms were dynamically invoked based on different display scenarios. On the other hand, we proposed an LTDR method, to refresh the resetting phase and driving phase in different regions simultaneously, thereby reducing the flicker effects caused by refreshing. The technology could balance display quality with refresh speed and eliminate flicker caused by traditional waveforms completely. Compared to the traditional waveform, the proposed technique can display 16-level grayscales while reducing the driving time and modulation depth by 60% and 95%, respectively, which greatly improves the reading experience of E-paper. In addition, the fast driving waveforms proposed can achieve low flicker and smooth video display in EPDs. Compared with the latest video display technology, its average structural similarity index measure (SSIM) is improved by 60.29% and energy consumption had reduced by 60.00%, which meets the demand for streaming video display on E-paper.

Abstract:To address the high power consumption associated with image refresh operations in EPDs, this paper proposes a low-power driving waveform that reduces the refresh power of EPDs by lowering the system's peak power. Compared to traditional waveforms, this waveform first activates the particles before erasing them, thus reducing voltage polarity changes. Additionally, it introduces a specific duration of 0 V voltage during the activation phase based on the physical characteristics of the electrophoretic particles to reduce the voltage span. Finally, a particular duration of 0 V voltage is introduced during the erasure phase to minimize the voltage span while ensuring the stability and consistency of the reference gray scale. The experimental results demonstrate that, in standard power tests, the new driving waveform reduces the power fluctuation value by 1.33% and the energy fluctuation value by 37.24% compared to the traditional driving waveform. This reduction in refresh power also mitigates screen flicker and ghosting phenomena.

Abstract:Mobile electronic devices are playing a more and more important role in people's daily life. Portable 3D display with thin and light characteristics has attracted wide attention. According to the application requirements of mobile information terminals, this paper mainly introduces the research progresses of four portable 3D display technologies, namely directional backlighting display, compressive light field display, integral imaging display, and directional light field display, and analyzes how to effectively utilize the display bandwidth according to the application scenes of portable devices. Finally, the future development of portable 3D display is prospected.

Abstract:With the rapid development of optoelectronic fields, electrochromic (EC) materials and devices have received remarkable attention and have shown attractive potential for use in emerging wearable and portable electronics, electronic papers/billboards, see-through displays, and other new-generation displays, due to the advantages of low power consumption, easy viewing, flexibility, stretchability, etc. Despite continuous progress in related fields, determining how to make electrochromics truly meet the requirements of mature displays (e.g., ideal overall performance) has been a long-term problem. Therefore, the commercialization of relevant high-quality products is still in its infancy. In this review, we will focus on the progress in emerging EC materials and devices for potential displays, including two mainstream EC display prototypes (segmented displays and pixel displays) and their commercial applications. Among these topics, the related materials/devices, EC performance, construction approaches, and processing techniques are comprehensively disscussed and reviewed. We also outline the current barriers with possible solutions and discuss the future of this field.
Materials For The Microencapsulated Electrophoretic Display

Abstract:The electrophoretic display (EPD), based on the electrophoresis to switch pixels or segments on and off, has received a great deal of academic and commercial interests because of its interesting properties such as light-weight, good contrast ratio, wide viewing angles, flexible, and low power consumption. The key materials for EPD are the microcapsules and the electrophoretic particles inside. Here, systematic studies on the preparation of electrophoretic particles by the surface modification and microencapsulation by complex coacervation were carried out, EPD prototype devices based on the obtained electrophoretic particles and microcapsules were prepared and driven at a low voltage.
Improvement of video playback performance of electrophoretic displays by optimized waveforms with shortened refresh time

Abstract:Electrophoretic display (EPD) has become one of the most important display technologies due to its bistability, low power consumption and outdoor readability. In this work, an image processing algorithm, which aims to enable video playback on EPD device without image distortion and grayscale loss by reducing the particle moving distance in EPD, is proposed and verified. The refresh time could be shortened by 22.2% with a video playback speed of more than 10 frames per second (fps) being achieved. This method could reduce the EPD switching time for quicker information displaying, and potentially extend the applications of EPD with video-like display property in the future.

Abstract:This paper involves a review on the advancing history of electroluminescent and displaying devices based on semi-conducting polymers(PLED), a series of main breakthroughs in this field in recent years. The different PLED structures and their features of nowaday ongoing research works are compared, the basic working principle of PLED are briefly introduced to the point, a precise defination of PLED quantum efficiency is given and the methods about how to improve the quantum efficiency are comprehensively described. The design, synthesis of charge transport polymers and their application in PLEDs are presented taking the prevalent multilayer PLEDs as examples. The application fields, existent problems, and future development of PLEDs are commented as a conclusion remark.

Abstract:Electrochromic devices (ECDs) possess the performance advantages in terms of color adjustability, low power consumption, and visual friendliness, emerging as one of the ideal candidates for energy‐efficient smart windows, next‐generation displays, and wearable electronics. The optical and electrical characteristics of ECDs could be adjusted by modifying the materials or structure of devices. This review summarizes the recent developments of innovative technologies and key materials of ECDs for display applications, highlighting the key issues and the development trends in this area.

Abstract:The transflective LCD is one of the more active research directions within FPD because it has advantages of both reflective and transmissive LCD, in lower power consumption and large dynamic range ambient light conditions. In this paper some representative transflective LCD technology presented were introduced including openings-on-metal transflector, dual-cell-gap transflective ECB LCD, the transflective LCD with IER, single-cell-gap transflective LCD driving by DGM, transflective mixed-mode LCD and color-sequential transflective LCD. Now, transflective LCD has some problems, such as color balance, image brightness, viewing angle and manufacturing cost, waiting to be solved.

Abstract:A new low-voltage reflective display pixel for electronic paper based on electrowetting-on-dielectric(EWOD) is proposed.The principle of the display pixel and the influences on the performances were analyzed,and the applied voltage was reduced by using the multiple dielectric layers of a Si_3N_4 film and a fluorocarbon polymer film.The on-switching and off-switching of display pixel were successfully realized by applying the low voltage of 15V,and the response times were less than 1/30s.

Abstract:Electronic paper display has received increasing attention due to its outstanding properties of wide viewing angle, bistable state and lower energy consumption. Among various electronic paper display technologies, electrowetting e-paper (EWD) is the most promising as it can achieve full-color display by using stacked layers or RGB color filter. However, the EWD is faced with several challenges, including poor color brightness, low contrast ratio and small color gamut. To improve the performance of the EWD, we proposed a new configuration of EWD consisting of three independent PCLC reflection films based on the cholesteric liquid crystal materials. We designed and experimentally fabricated three types of reflection films, and then added the PCLC films to the tri-layered EWD device. We experimentally characterized the reflectivity and color gamut of the sample in the dark room. It is found that the experimental results and simulation results match with each other. It is demonstrated that with the PCLC films, the reflectivity is improved by 20%, while the color gamut is improved by 80%, which is sufficient for the daily display demand of E-paper. The proposed EWD device containing PCLC reflection films provide a new strategy to improve the brightness and color gamut of current EWD device, and is promising for realizing the full-color E-paper display.

An application of electrophoretic display in large-area screen

Abstract:A large-scale (1 m x 1 m) microencapsulated electrophoretic display screen had been developed for the outdoor information displays, in which synthesized nano-particles were employed as the electrophoretic display material. The display has 200 x 192 pixels and the thickness of the display is less than 1 cm. The electrophoretic display screen is driven using 12 V DC voltage. The working current is about 60 mA when the display content is refreshed, while the average driving current is about 20 mA. Also, the display have a wide viewing angle, higher contrast ratio and memory. In addition, eight-level grayscale images were achieved by using pulse modulation driving method.

Abstract:The electronic paper has been successfully applied on electronic readers (E-Readers). Among all electronic paper technologies, the electrophoretic display (EPD) would be the most popular one due to its promising visual quality for showing text only contents or gray-tone images. However, playing videos/animations on the EPD is still a big challenge, thus none of the commercial E-Readers can support such a fancy feature. This drawback limits the application scenarios of the E-Readers. In this paper, we propose an integrated driving system for playing videos on the EPD. The system contains a new real-time signal processing hardware engine for video halftoning. In addition, the entire system is driven with a new driving waveform aiming at the reduction of residue images and visual flickers.

Abstract:E-paper market has great potential and huge development in the next three years.The advantages and drawbacks of the current flexible display technology nowadays were described.Cholesteric liquid crystal display technology has great advantage on consumption,colorization,contrast,aseismicity,etc.but the high cost will be a bottleneck for the further development and popularization.The advanced technologies and industrialization of cholesteric liquid crystal display technology were mainly controlled by the developed countries.The Chinese universities and research institutions still work on the primary studies.Fudan University's research findings on the cholesteric liquid crystal display was described in this paper.Combining the characteristics of flexible display industry and the industrial environment in China,three suggestions were proposed.

Abstract:Electrophoretic displays (EPDs) have become the main solution to electronic paper because of its invariably reflective and bistable properties. With different requirements of display resolution, speed, and contrast ratio, the electronic paper (E-paper) designers may adopt different types of electrophoretic material and active matrix backplane for building the system. The driving waveforms should be also customized for accommodating different application specifications and environment temperature. In this paper, we present a configurable EPD controller which can support various application specifications. In addition to providing a new architecture of compacted waveform lookup tables, the controller supports partial image update and integrates a real-time halftoning engine for improving image quality. The design has been implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and tested with several real EPDs.

Abstract:Recently, ‘Liquid crystal display (LCD) vs. organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display: who wins?’ has become a topic of heated debate. In this review, we perform a systematic and comparative study of these two flat panel display technologies. First, we review recent advances in LCDs and OLEDs, including material development, device configuration and system integration. Next we analyze and compare their performances by six key display metrics: response time, contrast ratio, color gamut, lifetime, power efficiency, and panel flexibility. In this section, we focus on two key parameters: motion picture response time (MPRT) and ambient contrast ratio (ACR), which dramatically affect image quality in practical application scenarios. MPRT determines the image blur of a moving picture, and ACR governs the perceived image contrast under ambient lighting conditions. It is intriguing that LCD can achieve comparable or even slightly better MPRT and ACR than OLED, although its response time and contrast ratio are generally perceived to be much inferior to those of OLED. Finally, three future trends are highlighted, including high dynamic range, virtual reality/augmented reality and smart displays with versatile functions.
