Abstract:In recent years,the incidence of coronary artery disease in China has tended to increase.Early screening of patients with coronary artery disease may lead to the appropriate therapeutic intervention and reduce the incidence of serious adverse cardiac events.Nowadays,the common diagnostic imaging methods include invasive coronary angiography,echocardiography,multi-slice spiral CT,radionuclide imaging and magnetic resonance imaging.With the rapid development of CT imaging technology,in addition to coronary angiography,dual-source CT can conduct stress myocardial perfusion imaging.This "one-stop" examination can obtain coronary anatomical features and myocardial hemodynamic change at the same time,which provides the basis for proper clinical intervention.The research progress of clinical application of dual-source CT myocardial perfusion imaging is reviewed in this paper.

Abstract:Scatter artifacts in cone beam CT (CBCT) degrades image quality seriously, which limits the development and application of CBCT. Researchers have reviewed scatter suppression or correction methods at home and abroad. However, a few new technologies have appeared along with the advancement of scatter suppression methods. This paper analyses the effects of X-ray scattering to CT imaging and summarizes general scatter suppression methods. Also, the scatter correction framework is combed, in which the projection compensation technique and common scatter estimation methods are introduced particularly. Problems in scatter correction are concluded, in which the magnification of noises in scatter correction is emphasized. It provides use for reference to the research and development in scatter suppression.

Abstract:Over the past several decades, medical imaging technology has developed rapidly and got wide applications. However, there is no one single imaging model suitable for all the clinical applications in the existing imaging technologies, such as X-CT, PET, SPECT, MRI, ultrasound, optical imaging and so on. Each one of them has its advantage and they can complement others, which brings on the development of the multi-modal imaging technology. This review gives introduction of the development of multi-modal imaging technology. Then,developments of systems, details of techniques and clinical applications are introduced in different terms including PET/CT, SPECT/CT, PET/MRI and so on. In the end, issues which should be considered, as well as the prospect of multi-modal imaging technology, are discussed.

Abstract:Nowadays,low-dose CT has become a hot topic in research.The progresses of some representative low-dose CT techniques and image processing methods for helical CT and cone-beam CT were reviewed,mainly expounded some new developments on this area,including ROI imaging methods based on PI-line and interior reconstruction,sparse sampling imaging based on compressed sensing and low-mAs scanning based on novel statistic iterative methods,etc.,and the clinical applications and future perspectives of low-dose imaging were introduced in this article.

Abstract:The first lecture in the symposium “The New CT” will cover recent developments in hardware. This relates to the scanner mechanics, the x‐ray source, and the detector system, but also to new designs such as C‐arm and micro‐CT systems. The largest portion will be dedicated to detector concepts and characteristics. With rotation times below 0.5 s, modern clinical CT systems pose increasing demands on the mechanical design of the scanner and of all its components. These are contrasted by the demands of C‐arm systems using flat panel detector where rotation times are typically between 5 and 20 s. Due to the increased rotation speed in clinical CT, x‐ray power levels increase accordingly to allow for unimpaired image quality, in particular unaltered noise levels. The latest developments in x‐ray source technology, which offer power levels of 80 to 100 kW, will be reviewed and explained. CT detector technology has received remarkable interest in the past years. The continuous development from single‐slice to multi‐slice systems, including detectors allowing the simultaneous acquisition of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 32, 40, and 64 slices, has even been viewed as the “slice race” or the “slice war” in the media. The technological basis will be reviewed. In particular, the question if this development shall and will continue will be discussed. This also includes the potential role of flat panel detectors which have come into use with C‐arm systems and which are now being used frequently for interventional CT and for CT angiography. The Multi-Source Instant CT for Superfast Imaging: System Concept, Reconstruction Algorithms and Experiments

Abstract:In recent years, the dynamic CT technology has attracted more and more attentions in medical and industrial applications. Instead of increasing the rotation speed of the gantry because of the mechanical limits, a more feasible method is to increase the amount of x-ray sources and detectors like the dual-source CT of Siemens. This paper focuses high resolution CT imaging (e.g. 50μm) of in vivo human body. We propose and try to develop a new CT system named instant CT which uses about 35 couples of carbon nanotube (CNT) x-ray sources and flat-panel detectors. All of these CNT x-ray sources and detectors are installed on the same gantry. It scans the target region-of-interest (ROI) dozens of times to collect the sufficient amount of projection data. At each exposure position, all of the x-ray sources are fast pulse-exposed synchronously, and the flat-panel detectors collect the projection data. Then, the gantry rotates a little angle to prepare for the next exposure until the rotation covers the angle between two x-ray sources. Because each exposure is very fast (about 0.1~5ms) the organ motions of in vivo human body can be greatly reduced. This paper introduces the instant CT system design, image reconstruction algorithms and experimental results. The image reconstruction for this multi-source instant CT includes three steps: few-view ROI image reconstruction from one simultaneous exposure data, motion registration among the sequence CT images from different exposures, and high resolution ROI image reconstruction with motion correction from all of the sequence projection data. Experiments were designed on our micro-CT system with a homemade phantom. The results validated the efficiency of this new CT system and reconstruction algorithms.
Overview of Multi-Source Ct Systems and Methods

Abstract:Multiple-source cone-beam scanning is a promising mode for dynamic volumetric CT/micro-CT. The first dynamic CT system is the Dynamic Spatial Reconstructor (DSR) built in 1979. The pursuance for higher temporal resolution has largely driven the development of CT technology, and recently led to the emergence of Siemens dual-source CT scanner. Given the impact and limitation of dual-source cardiac CT, triple-source cone-beam CT seems a natural extension for future cardiac CT. Our work shows that trinity (triple-source architecture) is superior to duality (dual-source architecture) for helical cone-beam CT in terms of exact reconstruction. In particular, a triple-source helical scan allows a perfect mosaic of longitudinally truncated cone-beam data to satisfy the Orlov condition and yields better noise performance than the dual-source counterpart. In the (2N+1)-source helical CT case, the more sources, the higher temporal resolution. In the N-source saddle CT case, a triple-source scan offers the best temporal resolution for continuous dynamic exact reconstruction of a central volume. The recently developed multi-source cone-beam algorithms include an exact backprojection-filtration (BPF) approach and a "slow" exact filtered-backprojection (FBP) algorithm for (2N+1)-source helical CT, two fast quasi-exact FBP algorithms for triple-source helical CT, as well as a fast exact FBP algorithm for triple-source saddle CT. Some latest ideas will be also discussed, such as multi-source interior tomography and multi-beam field-emission x-ray CT.

Abstract:Multi-scale 3D characterization is widely used by materials scientists to further their understanding of the relationships between microscopic structure and macroscopic function. Scientific computed tomography (CT) instruments are one of the most popular choices for 3D non-destructive characterization of materials at length scales ranging from the angstrom-scale to the micron-scale. These instruments typically have a source of radiation that interacts with the sample to be studied and a detector assembly to capture the result of this interaction. A collection of such high-resolution measurements are made by re-orienting the sample which is mounted on a specially designed stage/holder after which reconstruction algorithms are used to produce the final 3D volume of interest. The end goal of scientific CT scans include determining the morphology,chemical composition or dynamic behavior of materials when subjected to external stimuli. In this article, we will present an overview of recent advances in reconstruction algorithms that have enabled significant improvements in the performance of scientific CT instruments - enabling faster, more accurate and novel imaging capabilities. In the first part, we will focus on model-based image reconstruction algorithms that formulate the inversion as solving a high-dimensional optimization problem involving a data-fidelity term and a regularization term. In the last part of the article, we will present an overview of recent approaches using deep-learning based algorithms for improving scientific CT instruments.

Fast Imaging By A Single-Slice-Detector Helical Ct

Abstract:In order to accelerate imaging process and lower overall system cost, many practical CT systems use single slice detectors and big-pitch helical scanning, especially in next generation Baggage Scanning system. In this paper, we present a reconstruction strategy for this kind of systems. We researched on the imaging qualities resulting from different scanning parameters, especially the thickness of the detectors. The experimental study is both on simulation data and experimental data. We found out that reconstruction results from relatively thicker detectors are better than those from thinner detectors. We also compared post-processing methods of single dimensional smoothing and multi-dimensional smoothing in improving the imaging quality for such resulting reconstructions from single-slice-detector helical CT (SSDHCT). Finally, an implementation scheme of the reconstruction algorithm and post-processing using the latest GPU is presented. We achieve a 10 times speedup and the performance meets the requirement for practical applications. At last, we produced a sample machine using this technique, and get some real baggage scanning result. Our method works effectively in reality applications.

Abstract:Micro-computed tomography(Micro-CT) is a new three-dimension high-resolution imaging device based on X-ray imaging principle.The system enables a non-invasive three-dimensional inspection to the specimen, bones, teeth and biomaterial, and in latest year, it was more widely applied to screen small animal in vivo for drug discovery, cancer pathology and gene expression research.This review describes the technical aspects of Micro-CT, and indicates four main development directions, improved imaging contrast, ultra-high spatial resolution, fast speed and multi-modality imaging.

Abstract:Current medical CTs obtain projection data at different angles by rotating the gantry. However, the gantry rotation introduces vibrations, which cause the blurring of the reconstruction images. Moreover, the limited speed of the gantry rotation limits the possibility of shorter scan time, which makes the clear cardiac imaging difficult. In order to solve the above problems, the multi-sources static CT system is proposed. Instead of rotating the gantry that mounted with the source and detectors, the static CT system uses three line-array sources to avoid any movement during the scan. A Monte Carlo dual-energy thorax CT simulation based on this static CT system is performed. The dual-energy reconstruction and material decomposition results are represented. The good imaging results verify the feasibility of the proposed static CT system. The potential problems and limits of the static CT as well as the further researches are discussed.

Abstract:On the basis of DR(Digital Radiography)/CT security inspection system,DR/SSCT(single slice spiral CT) security inspection system was developed.This spiral CT system can improve the CT system's drawbacks.The research work includes in replacing the former data acquisition system by a new system which can acquire projection data of multi-slices and devising the SSCT reconstruction algorithms.Simulation experiments and practical experiments were devised to contrast several algorithms.Interpolation technique was operated in detectors data in order to improve the algorithms.In conclusion,the system exploits an algorithm of weighted average of 360° LI(Linear Interpolation) and JH-HI(Jiang Hsieh-Half scan Interpolation).

Abstract:This paper summarizes the recent contributions made by the authors in the field of CT imaging. The work includes both theoretical research and industrial applications of methods about image reconstruction, image processing and understanding. The contributions can be concluded into four aspects: i) algorithms for 3D cone-beam reconstruction are analyzed in performance and with error distribution, and a new algorithm is proposed to improve image quality; ii) reconstruction methods under different principle are studied and implemented, iii) system performance is evaluated theoretically and experimentally based on task, iv) effective methods for image processing and understanding are presented and verified for practical usage.

Abstract:Objective To discuss the construction and principal of dual-source CT,as well as its superiorities in imaging of heart coronary artery and the clinical application of dual energy technique.Methods The structure of Siemens 64-slice CT was analyzed.The superiorities of dual-source CT in imaging of heart coronary artery were compared with conventional multi-slice CT,and the clinical value of dual energy technique was discussed.Results The dual-source computed tomography had high temporal resolution superiority,and high quality coronary artery CT angiography could be acquired without heart rate control.Dual energy technique could be applied to differentiate tissue component,display given tissue,evaluate the content of iodine in tissue.Conclusion Dual-source CT can not only enhance the diagnosis veracity of pathological changes of heart coronary artery but improve the ability of CT in tissue differentiation.

Abstract:With the improvement and progress in CT technology,dual-energy CT applications became clinically available.Compared with conventional multi-detector CT,dual-energy CT technologies have realized multi-parameter imaging,including monochromatic imaging,spectral curve,basis pair for materialdecomposition images in quantitative analysis and effective atomic number.The most prominent advantage of dual-energy CT is that it can not only demonstrate the morphological changing,but also provide several quantitative imaging markers reflecting the substantive characteristics of lesions.As an integrated diagnostic method,dual-energy CT technology could potentially improve the diagnosis and differentiation in the future.
Multi-energy X-ray Imaging Technique and Its Application in Computed Tomography

Abstract:With the rapid development of X-ray detectors,photon counting energy dispersive detectors become more and more popular in X-ray imaging area. Using this kind of detectors,a polychromatic X-ray spctrum can be seperated into different energy regions and the photon number in each energy region can be counted independently,thus attenuation coefficients under different photon energies can be obtained. Multi-energy X-ray imaging technique opens up new perspectives within the fields of X-ray imaging. This paper introduces the latest development of photon counting X-ray detector and its application in medical imaging. Also some advantages of this technique in CT imaging are presented in this paper such as dose reduction,SNR improvement and precision improvement of material discrimination. Recently,a lot of research institutes are dedicated to faster electronic device and readout chip for photon counting detectors. With the rapid development of multi-energy imaging,it will bring a large revolution for X-ray imaging.

Abstract:Compared with 2D fan-beam or parallel-beam CT, cone-beam CT system is able to achieve higher special resolution and better utilization of photons. It also requires less scan time. However, it had not come into practical application because of the difficulties in algorithms and technology. With the development of hardware and algorithms, cone-beam CT has become practical in recent years. Flat-panel detector is the best candidate for cone-beam CT. Here we discuss the advantage of flat-panel detector. Then we summarize the flat-panel cone-beam CT systems at present and make a discussion and comparison of them.

Abstract:Objective CT quality control method is mainly to monophyletic CT at present.The aim of this study was to investigate the quality control methods for 64-slice CT through analyzing the quality control protocol in Siemens dual-source 64-slice CT scanner in routine work.Methods Slice thickness,spatial resolution,density resolution,CT value linearity,field uniformity,noise and CT dose index of dual-source 64-slice CT scanner were measured with a Catphan500 CT phantom(made by American phantom laboratory) and a Barracuda multi-functional X-ray detector(made in Switzerland).All statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 21.0 software.Results The radiation dose was in the normal range(F=34.362,P<0.05),the conventional algorithm under spatial resolution was 8-9 LP/cm,and the density resolution was 3@0.5%-3@0.3%.CT liner was 1.56E-0.4 to 1.68E-0.4,homogenity was 2.0 Hu,and noise was 0.19-0.39.The results measured in the research were in the normal range.All the indicators of the dual-source CT were qualified.Conclusion The detection parameters of CT images,such as the noise,linear,contrast resolution,can effectively guarantee the optimal system performance and maintain the good image quality.The detection of CT dose can help to timely understand the dangerous levels of radiation,optimize the scanning and scheme,and reduce the dose on the premise of guarantee the diagnosis.
