Abstract:This paper presents an approach to the thoughts and characteristics of Adam Smith's ethics, who's more often regarded as"The Father of Economics".By comparing the ethics thoughts of Adam Smith,predecessors and other men of his age,the author concludes that Smith's points were apparently different from those of Hobbes,Mandeville,Hutchinson and Hume in the following three basic issues:"the nature of virtue","the ground of moral judgment"and"the basic method to study moral philosophy". Smith's ethics oriented from"sympathy",developed to"virtue"and finally formed a complete ideological system of which the core is"propriety".His virtue theory,conscience theory,justice theory and utility theory were all strictly built on the basis of"sympathy",which is the characteristic and value of his ethics system.It is indicated that exploring his moral theory features will help to recognize Smith's special importance in the Scottish Enlightenment thinkers and to comprehend his present-day values.

Abstract:Argumentation of Contemporary Analytic Philosophy on logical rules is experiencing the return of Hegelian thought. The reason is that Although Sellars argued that representationism of analytic tradition, which mistakenly took Kantian duality of concept and intuition as empirically separable, logically led to the myth of the Given, his argument, similared to Kant's self-legislative conception, was still within the framework of the Given. This prompted Brandon to criticize Kantian Given of logic with Hegelian pragmatism. However, his argument is free from the framework, but it is caught in Hegelian so-called skepticism which always sees in its results only pure nothingness. In this regard, Hegel's argumentation strategy is self-denial of self-consciousness by the way of interactive negotiation, which shows that the logical rules are not only the logical structure of the world and the mind, but also the pragmatic norms of lawfulness and rationality.

Abstract:In Aristotle's disciplinary system, ethics is, in the first place, defined by practical philosophy. And his“practice,”as an“action”that is inherent with Zweckmaessigkeit in individuals for self-perfection and self-fulfillment, is a transcendental, true existential activity in the sense of“Dasein,” rather than“practice”as opposite to“theory”in modern sense. When Aristotle classified his ethics as a practical philosophy belonging to“political science,”he was arguing that the nature of the existence of us“das Mas”is our co-existence in the Polis. Co-existence in the Polis is prior to the existence of individuals; and the ethics of co-existence——justice——is the whole of virtue rather than one kind of virtuei. The virtue of individuals is only a part of and depends on the whole. In the final analysis, both the true existence of individuals and the ethical co-existence of the Polis are realization of outstandingness(virtue) that defines man as man. And ethics is a science of human beings in nature. The structure of the problem at its core is the relationship between the true existence of individuals and the ethical co-existence of the Polis.

Abstract:Frege’s logic, which denies the factors of mankind and his mind, is just suitable in some fields, e.g. in deduction, but not in induction, of mathematics. We would be wrong if we extended his truth to other fields, for example, daily life or philosophy. Something like the factors of mankind and mental elements that Frege gave up is just the starting point of new revolution in logic and philosophy. After Frege, logicians and philosophers returned to the natural language in the middle of the 20~ th century. J. L.Austin (1955) found some kinds of utterances, performatives that are of doing something in saying something, which are meaningful but not true or false. Then, he created his famous theory of speech acts, which is the foundational theory of pragmatics that gives consideration to man, the user of language. N.Chomsky (1957) developed his syntactic theory in rationalism and psychologism, which takes Language Faculty (LF) as innate, viewing language as the mirror of mind. After these developments, a new inter-discipline, cognitive science, was set up in the mid 1970s. Therefore, this author thinks that it would be necessary to institute a new frame of logic in the background of cognitive science, say, cognitive logic. The author got the cognitive logic system made up of six disciplines-philosophical logic, mental logic, logic of language, logics in culture and evolution, logics in AI, and logic of neuro-web-by mapping six branches of cognitive science into the fields of modern logic. The author points out that some new fields of cognitive logic, such as mental logic and logic in culture and evolution should be paid more attention to. In this paper, the different characteristics of mental logic and Frege’s logic are analyzed in detail. Mental logic is a new discipline integrating logic with psychology, in which the mentation that Frege had forsaken came back again into logic. The author points out that logic faculty, like language faculty, is also innate. Therefore, logic must have some certain structures and modalities that are genetic, innate and mental. Finally, the author concludes that logic cannot function in exploring man's mind in cognitive science until it has returned to mankind himself.

Abstract:This paper argues for the possibility of a dedicated legal logic, first by attacking the argument against it based on the presupposition that the law provides the content, not the form of arguments. The main criticism against this argument is that it presuposes that the notion of logical form is given independent of what a logic recognizes as logical form. The positive argument for the possibility of legal logic is based on a holistic view of logic, according to which there is no sharp demarcation between logic and domain theory. The paper goes on to discuss two typical topics for legal logic, that is the logical difference between rules and principles, and the evaluation of regulations in the light of the goals to which they contribute. The paper closes with an argument for the practical relevance of legal logic. In this connection it discusses the possibility to make exceptions to rules as an alternative for farfetched interpretations, and the possibility to review rules against legal principles.

Abstract:New perspectives keep emerging in the logical study of social interactions, witnessed by yet another collection of research papers. Once our focus of reasoning shifts from an individual to a social setting, interesting issues naturally arise. The central question is the following: how is an individual’s attitude related to that of others and that of a group, especially when we take into account the informative communication between agents, as well as the structures of a group? This has been studied to various extent in social epistemology, social choice theory, social norms theory, etc. In this context, our main concern is logic: how can a logical approach shed light on our reasoning about these scenarios? Abstract:Primitive people, in their initial struggle for existence, must have found Nature to be a formidable force to reckon with. Our ancestors eked out their means of survival from the abundant bounties of the ancient world with the meager tools at their disposal and sometimes tried to placate Nature by worshipping her. The earth was a rich mother and the needs of the early people were few. With time the ever increasing demands of humankind were matched by their growing power to wreak destruction and havoc. They destroyed forests and dug into the earth with unrestricted abandon in the quest of greater wealth and enjoyment, slaughtered every type of life for food and even for the mere pleasure of killing. Human beings remain the only predator that kills the young adults of a species, damaging the reproductive capital of the latter. Philosophers have argued against the wanton destruction of the earth’s resources. That these warnings have been largely ignored is apparent in the danger signs that have started to raise a question mark on the future of life on this planet. Therefore, these ethical theories are needed to be analyzing in a pragmatic point of view of their applications. The tendency of the theories is to concentrate on the former and take the latter for granted. This creates a gap between knowledge and application of environmental ethics. There must be some aspects other than worldviews that affects human behavior. We proceed with a pragmatic theory of ethics which takes into account the practical aspects and strengthen it further with a psychological probe into the aspects responsible for creating the gap.

Abstract:'Logic' is a growing and changing concept.Logic is concerned with human thinking;it refines the prescriptions of how human beings should think from the descriptions of how human beings actually think.Because of the development of human thinking and the change of human's wants in cognition and practice,logical studies of different historical periods usually show important difference in their subject matters,emphases,methodologies and results,and then the varieties of logical theories have been multiplied.In the push of computer science and artificial intelligence research,contemporary logic becomes to focus on the investigation of how human actually think on different concrete topics,and brings itself some new characteristics,e.g.the direct and obvious description of actual process of thinking,the complexity of logical techniques,the uncertainty of the conclusions of inference,and the pursue of the applicability of the resulting theories,and so on.We can't take the dominant approach of a historical period to be absolutely or uniquely correct one,and use it to judge all the research of our historical predecessors and contemporary colleagues.We should never forget the slogan that 'independence in spirit,freedom in thinking' which is the soul of academic research,and never forget to put it into practice in our logical studies.We should maintain academic standards and protect academic freedom at the same time.

Abstract:Classical logic is about propositions which we can know or believe, and unchanging inferential relationships between them. But inference is first and foremost an activity, for which propositions are merely the input, and the result. In recent years, there has been a growing awareness that various activities of reasoning, evaluation, belief revision, or communication, are themselves typical themes for logical investigation, and that their dynamic structure can be studied explicitly by logical means. 1 For instance, it seems strange to study only the statics of what it means to 'know' a proposition, when knowledge usually results from basic actions of learning that we perform all the time, such as asking a question and getting an answer. Indeed, asking questions and giving answers are just as much logical core activities as drawing conclusions! This line can be extended: the natural dynamic counterpart of static epistemic logic is the theory of arbitrary individual or social learning mechanisms. Similar trajectories from static to dynamic arise when we look at inference in such stages, first as a zero-agent mathematical relationship between static propositions, then as a one-agent activity of drawing conclusions, and finally as a many-agent interactive process of argumentation. This broadening of perspective, sometimes called the 'Dynamic Turn', started around 1980 with work on interpretation procedures for natural language, as well as belief revision in artificial intelligence. Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to outline a simple set of axioms for basic set theory from which most fundamental facts can be derived. The key to the whole project is a new axiom of set theory which I dubbed "The Law of Extremes". It allows for quick proofs of basic set-theoretic identities and logical tautologies, so it is also a good tool to aid one's memory. I do not assume any exposure to euclidean geometry via axioms. Only an experience with transforming algebraic identities is required. The idea is to get students to do proofs right from the get-go. In particular, I avoid entangling students in nuances of logic early on. Basic facts of logic are derived from set theory, not the other way around.

Abstract:What are the basic logical notions and skills that all beginning students should learn, and that might stay with them as a useful cultural travel kit for their lives, even when an overwhelming majority will not become professional logicians? The course "Logic in Action" http://www.logicinaction.org/ tries to convey the idea that logic is about reasoning but also much more: including information and action, both by individuals and in multi-agent settings, studied by semantic and syntactic tools, and still confirming to the standards of precision of an exact and mathematized discipline. Viewed in this way, modern logic sits at a crossroads of academic disciplines where interesting new developments occur every day. In this light introduction, I explain the main ideas behind the design of the course, which combines predicate logic with various modal logics, and I lightly discuss its current manifestations and dialects in Amsterdam, Beijing and the Bay Area, as well as its future as an EdX pilot course.
