Abstract:Objective To investigate the role of neural cell adhesion molecule in process of neural plasticity after the ischemic brain injury in rats. Methods Twenty six male Wistar rats were randomly allocated into 3 groups: Ischemic brain injury group, in which the animals were subjected to an episode of right middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO) for two hours( n=20 ), sham operation group ( n=3 ) and no operation group ( n=3 ). Immunohistochemistry was used to study the expression levels of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) at 1,2,3 and 7 days after ischemia. Results Increased expression of NCAM in the temporal lobe could be noted in the injury group at all the four time points, but it was more prominent at the 2 and 3 days after ischemia, and was rather higher at 7th day. Conclusion The increasing NCAM expression after transient ischemic brain injury may be considered as an molecular evidence of the neural plasticity following reperfusion in rats with ischemic brain injury
