Abstract:Objective To elucidate the pathogenetic mechani sm of the strabismic amblyopia via spatial properties of striate cortical cells. Methods After surgical creation of esotropic strabismus at the postnatal four weeks, some cats could develop amblyopia. We studied the response properties of visual cortex neurons in 9 amblyopic cats and 8 normal cats with drifting sinusoidal gratings. Results The cortical binocularity cell number was lower in the strabismic amblyopia grou p (76 cells)than in the normal group(83 cells). The optimal spatial frequency 0.90 ±0.12,2.49±0.45 respectively and the high cut-off spatial frequency 3.49±0. 51,6.19±1.07 respectively of the cortical neurons driven by the amblyopic eyes were substantially and significantly lower than for neurons driven by the non- amblyopic eyes. But there were few differences of the temporal frequency tuning bet ween the two eyes. Conclusion The loss of binocular interaction and the undersampl ing of higher-spatial-frequency components of visual stimuli are the underlyin g changes in strabismic amblyopia.
