Abstract:The calculation of ultimate bearing capacity is a significant issue in the design of Concrete Filled Steel Tubular (CFST) arch bridges. Based on the space beam theory, this paper provides a calculation method for determining the ultimate strength of CFST structures. The accuracy of this method and the applicability of the stress-strain relationships were validated by comparing different existing confined concrete uniaxial constitutive relationships and experimental results. Comparison of these results indicated that this method using the confined concrete uniaxial stress-strain relationships can be used to calculate the ultimate strength and CFST behavior with satisfactory accuracy. The calculation results are stable and seldom affected by concrete constitutive relationships. The method is therefore valuable in the practice of engineering design. Finally, the ultimate strength of an arch bridge with span of 330 m was investigated by the proposed method and the nonlinear behavior was discussed.

Abstract:The reliability of ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state are both important for structure safety evaluation.Sometimes,the reliability of serviceability limit state is the critical target for existing structure in use.Therefore,the characteristics of the reliability analysis on serviceability limited state for existing reinforced concrete bridges were discussed.The effect of the improvement of live load and the difference of fuzzy failure bounds on reliability was studied.With crack width as the analysis parameter of normal limited state,the calculation of a reinforced concrete bridge was demonstrated on the basis of updated inspection information.

Abstract:Aiming at the uncertainty and variation of geo-material parameters in foundation pit engineering, the reliability analysis method of soil-nailing wall is discussed based on the response surface method, genetic algorithm and taboo search techniques. A modified Morgenstern-Price limit equilibrium method for analysis of the interior stability of soil-nailing wall is presented by considering the reinforcement effect of soil nails. An approximate reliability calculation method of soil-nailing wall, in which the response surface function is constructed by these sample points that are obtained from the modified Morgenstern-Price method instead of traditional FEM numerical simulation method, is established based on the response surface principle. Taking soil shearing strength parameters c and. as the random variables. a global optimal algorithm. adaptive taboo search genetic algorithm (ATSGA) is presented for soil-nailing wall reliability, which can effectively locate the critical slip surface associated with the minimum reliability index. An example is given; and the calculation results computed by proposed method show that if taking the minimum reliability index and the minimum safety factor as the target function respectively, the two critical slip surfaces are significantly different.

Abstract:Considering the two aspects of applicability and durability, this paper discusses four factors on which the serviceability in limited state depends: the width of transverse crack, the deflection of concrete member, the depth of concrete carbonation anti-crack of longitudinal crack and the width of longitudinal crack. The analysis shows that the coefficients of the calculation mode have most important influence on the reliability based on the serviceability in limited state for concrete structural members, and that the loads also have other influences. Due to the concrete discreteness, the material property of the concrete is the other important influential factor.

Abstract:The data of resistant to stress of concrete strength has been collected in construction engineering.The static state to keep the square diagram analysis method and the dynamic state single value respectively-move very bad method have been adopted in quality control of the concrete strength.The assessment using static state analysis method has advantages of direct perception on the concrete strength as well as simple.Under the same concrete design strength,the molds are dismantled with different time will resulted in changing of assurance rate of the concrete strength corresponding to the changing of assurance rate coefficient t,because of the influence of various uncertainties. The single value control method aims verifying the process of concrete strength quality,when R_s>5.0 MPa,the quality and bone of the concrete material to anticipate of contain the amount of water variety should be adjusted,while R_m>2.5 MPa,the creation method and the possibility of molding tool deformation should be checked.

Abstract:The durability design method of concrete structure under carbonation is studied based on structure reliability in this article. First the durability limit state and the reliability target are defined corresponding to carbonation. Second the failure probability expression of designed service life is established with adoption of proper prediction model of carbonation depth. Finally the durability indexes of structure and material are comprehensively determined under the request of service life. Some application examples are provided comparatively under different environmental conditions also.

Abstract:A new multi-factor revision model of chloride diffusion in concrete was formulated on the basis of Fick's Law.The value of parameters in the model was given for practical application according to the literature survey and pilot calculation.By using this model and based on the reliability theory,different distribution characteristics of chloride ion corrosion depth was taken into account,then the method of time-dependent reliability calculation was specified.The results of an actual project example shows that the deflection coming from the assumption of corrosion depth subjected to the normal distribution is small,but the computing process can be greatly simplified.

Abstract:The reliability of concrete in complex environments is the basis for improving the reliability of concrete structures. A concrete reliability assessment based on multiple degradation factor is proposed. First, chloride penetration and fatigue damage are selected as two degradation parameters for concrete, and series tests are developed to investigate the surface chloride concentration, diffusion coefficient, and degradation of residual strength under coupled effect of chloride penetration and fatigue. Then, two marginal distribution functions of the durability reliability of the concrete are deduced based on two failure modes. Subsequently, fatigue loading the parameters of different typical copula functions are obtained by using the maximum likelihood method (MLM), and copula function selection is carried out according to the Akaike information criterion (AIC) criterion. The joint distribution function is then derived by fusing the two marginal distribution functions using the selected copula function, and a remaining durability reliability model is obtained. Finally, the proposed model is verified by experimental data. This method should be considered as a reference for the evaluation and reliability calculation of concrete structures.

Abstract:For concrete structures in chloride environment,in order to meet the qualified reliability requirement during their design service life,a method of determining the durability parameter is proposed by introducing the structural durability coefficient γD to consider the influence of resistance attenuation on reliability index,based on the dynamic calculation model and dynamic reliability analysis of structural resistance deterioration process as well as the existing reliability expressions.For the design service life of 50 years,considering three load combinations and five ratios of variable load to permanent load effect,the value of structural durability parameter γD is determined according to different environmental conditions,water-cement ratios and concrete cover thicknesses.Consequently,the practical reliability design method based on durability is established.

Abstract:This study established a three-dimensional random spherical aggregate model of concrete. Models with various volume contents of coarse aggregate were sliced, and slice areas were statistically analyzed. To study the effects of the coarse aggregate volume content and the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) strength on concrete’s compressive strength, a concrete strength calculation method based on graphical analysis was proposed. The ratio of crown area B to sectional area A of the spherical aggregate model was found to be close to 1.5. At the ITZ strength below 70% of the mortar strength, the increased volume content of coarse aggregate reduced the compressive strength of concrete, with the opposite trend observed at the ITZ strength exceeding 70% of the mortar strength.

Calculation and Reliability Analysis of the Shear Capacity of Steel Reinforced Concrete Beams

Abstract:Two formulae can be used to calculate the shear capacity of steel reinforced concrete beams.In order to study their suitability,these calculation theories,methods and formulae were presented at the beginning of this paper.Engineering projects and experimental data from tests including thirty three specimens were employed in this research,and the reliability indices of the formulae were calculated by means of the second moment of first order method,which is used in the analysis of structural reliability.The results indicates that the reliability index of the calculation formula provided by Technical Specification for Steel Reinforced Concrete Composite Structures(JGJ 138-2001) is 4.647,which meets the requirement of the design value of reliability index.However,the reliability index of the formula from Specification for Design of Steel-Reinforced Concrete Structure(YB 9082-97) is 2.100,which does not meet the requirement.Therefore,to calculate the shear capacity of steel reinforced concrete beams,it is safe and reliable to apply the formula provided by Technical Specification for Steel Reinforced Concrete Composite Structures(JGJ 138-2001).

Abstract:The second moment of first order method recommended in the National Reliability-Design Standard of Building Structure (GBJ5009-2001) is applied to analyze the reliability of design formulae of compressing, pure bending, pure torsion, compression-bending and bending-torsion members, these formulae are recommended in Technical Order of Centrifuge Concrete Filled Steel Tubular (DL5020-96) and related research findings. Based on the theoretical calculation, the influence of the changing strength of the materials, load ratio, slenderness ratio and live load on the reliability are discussed. The analytical results indicated that the reliability indexes of the design formulae satisfy the demand of the National Reliability-Design Standard of Building Structure (GBJ5009-2001) for plastic material on the whole.

Abstract:The analytic method for strong shear weak bending design reliability of RC frame column and sensitivity thereof on random variables under earthquake action is investigated. The corresponding calculating, program is compiled and the indexes of reliability and sensitivity are calculated under different cross-section size, different reinforcement ratio of longitudinal bars and stirrup ratio, and different shear-enlarged. The results indicate that the target index of strong shear weak bending design reliability can't be ensured by shear-enlarged coefficients taken in the current design code, and that the indexes of sensitivity on calculating model of shear-resistance k(v) and flexural strength of concrete f(t) are large, which necessitate the calculating formula of shear-resistance taken in the current design code to be perfected and the statistical characters of flexural strength of concrete to be more accurate.

Abstract:In order to improve the accuracy and reliability of the calculation results of the ultimate bearing capacity of reinforced concrete beams, this paper proposes a calculation method for the ultimate bearing capacity of reinforced concrete beams based on the unified strength theory. Firstly, we analyse the mechanical properties of reinforced concrete materials and conduct principal stress analysis of reinforced concrete beams. Then, the plastic damage model (CDP model) is used to simulate the mechanical properties of concrete components under reciprocating loads. Based on the unified strength theory assumption, concrete and steel bars are considered as equivalent materials, and the shear deformation method is used to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity. The results show that the accuracy of the proposed method can reach up to 99.2%, indicating that the proposed method can effectively improve the accuracy of calculating the ultimate bearing capacity of reinforced concrete beams.

Abstract:The traditional reliability analysis method of structural system mainly depends on the branch and bound technology of the structure failure path,leading to that identifying the main failure mode is very difficult and the calculation work of the system failure probability is huge.In view of this,combined with the beta bound method and the joint failure probability branch bound method,a new method that could fastly and efficiently solve the structural system reliability was put forward.Firstly,the safety margin functions of structural element and the corresponding failure probability were determined by applying the structure analysis principle,and the element with the maximal value of failure probability was then removed and substituted by virtual force to form a new structure,and then the reanalysis for the new structure was carried out.The steps above was recycled until the mechanism was formed,and then the structure system reliability was finally calculated by using the failure probability of the component.The comparative analysis of the cases show that the proposed method is simple,less calculating workload,high efficient calculation accuracy and available failure path available,which is very suitable to calculate the system reliability calculation for large scale structure.
Calculation of flexure strength for SRC elements

Abstract:Four calculation methods of flexure strength of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) elements are introduced in this paper. Based on the plane section assumption, the flexure strength of SRC can be calculated as reinforced concrete elements. Another theoretical method is universal superposition method, which is based on the lower bound theory of plastic mechanics. These two theoretical methods are precise and in good agreement, but they are too complex to be used for design purpose. The simple superposition method, used in Japanese SRC design code, is easy to calculate, but its results are too conservative in some field due to the roughly approximate distribution of axial force. Based on the concept of universal superposition method, a simplified formula of axial force distribution is suggested by the authors. It is shown that the results are more precise than the simple superposition method and in good agreement with the theoretical methods. Besides, the suggested method is easier than the two theoretical methods. An example is provided to demonstrate the introduced methods.

Abstract:The calculation of flexural strength of reinforced concrete members in Code for Design of Concrete Structures (GB50010-2002) is the equivalent rectangle method based on the plane section assumption.This method is inconvenient to symmetrical reinforced members.A simplified method is proposed,which is based on the superposition theory.The superposition theory has the lower bound theorem of the plastic theory as its foundation.The simplified formula of the superposition theory is easy to use and its result is quite close to the accurate solution of the plane section method.

Abstract:When the analytical approach is adopted to determine the double-K fracture toughness of concrete,the accuracy of the calculated fracture governing parameter,i.e.,the initiation fracture toughness,is directly influenced by the accuracy of the calculated cohesive fracture toughness.An expression for calculating cohesive fracture toughness,where a tension softening relationship determined using CEB-FIP Mode Code is assumed,is developed in the present paper based on the weight function approach.Using the measured maximum loads and critical crack mouth opening displacements of five groups of wedge splitting compact tension specimens of which the maximum depth is 1000mm,the double-K fracture toughness parameters are then evaluated using the developed expression and compared with the values calculated using the analytical integral approach.The results show that two different approaches agree well and the maximum error between them is less than 2%.

Abstract:Based on the method of obtaining the partial derivatives of basic random variables, stochastic boundary integral equations are established, and practically, the method is applied to solve the engineering problems of concrete gravity dams, considering the random factors including material parameters of dambody, water level of upper reaches, anti-slide friction coefficient of dam base, etc. Numerical examples show that the stochastic boundary element method applied in the paper, in computing the reliability degree of grand volume costructions such as concrete gravity dam, comparatively has the advantages of fewer inputting data and more precise computational results.
