A Two-Year Clinical Study on the Alveolar Bone Loss of the Terminate Abutment and Residual Ridge with Free-End Partial Dentures

Abstract:Objective To study the two-year clinical result of the residual ridge and alveolar bone of the terminate abutment of free-end partial denture with three kinds of clasps.Methods A total of 37 free-end partial dentures,of which 6 is RPI,10 is RPA and 21 is Aker clasp,all were followed for 24 months.An occlusal modified extra oral projection system was used to obtain a serial standardized radiographs of each abutment after 6,12 and 24 months.Three radiographs of each patient were analyzed with digital subtraction radiology.Results The alveolar bone of the abutment and the residual ridge both had absorption during the 24 months,but different clasps had different amount of absorption.The distal alveolar bone had the largest amount of absorption.Conclusion Free-end partial denture designed with mesial occlusal rest is a better choice in protecting mesial-distal alveolar bone of the abutment compared with distal occlusal rest design,while RPA is better than Aker clasp and RPI in preventing bucco-lingual alveolar bone and residual ridge loss.
