Abstract:The research trends of magnesium alloy were briefly reviewed in terms of micro-arc oxidation,super-hydrophobic film,laser surface modification and sol-gel coating.The growth rate was faster,the film was denser,the hardness was higher,and the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the magnesium alloy were better provided with micro-arc oxidation in bipolar and mixed (single and bipolar) current modes.The dense corrosion resistant film resisting to neutral salt spray test for over 200 hours could be obtained after micro-arc oxidation for a short time (～3 min) by adding suitable additives in the strong alkali solution mainly composed of high concentration caustic alkali.The micro-nano multi-level structure,roughened surface,could be formed on the surface of magnesium alloy by adopting hydrothermal method,electrochemical etching,micro-arc oxidation and electrodeposition.Then the surface was modified by low surface energy substances to obtain super-hydrophobic film layer and improve corrosion resistance of the magnesium alloy.The laser surface modification of magnesium alloy could improve the surface composition,refine the grain size,generate uniform phase distribution and improve solid solubility limit of the surface,thereby improving corrosion resistance,friction and wear resistance and fatigue strength of the magnesium alloy.Sol-Gel organic/inorganic hybrid coatings showed good adhesion to magnesium alloy substrate.They could not only improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys,but also entrust oxidation resistance,wear resistance,water proofness and other properties to magnesium alloys.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are preferred materials for lightweighting, particularly for automotive and biomedical applications due to their outstanding biocompatibility and osseointegration properties. However, the use of Mg in many applications is constrained by its poor corrosion resistance; hence, intensive investigations are needed to improve its anti-corrosion stability. Among the methods for increasing anti-corrosion stability, a protective layer coating on Mg has been demonstrated to be very efficient. Herein, we provide an overview of the current state and development of chemical-based coatings applied to Mg alloys, including anodizing, plasma electrolytic oxidation, electrodeposition, electroless plating, chemical conversion coating, sol-gel coating, layered double hydroxide, and layer-by-layer assembly. The emerging progress in coating fabrication and corrosion performance breakthroughs are disclosed, and coating mechanisms and functional perspectives are explored. Because of significant progress in developing corrosion protection approaches for Mg alloys, there is a vast possibility of chemical-based coatings waiting to be explored. Despite significant advancements in the technology and development of future functional and smart coatings for Mg alloys, a traditional or conventional chemical-based coating retains comparative functional qualities, hence, necessitates a deeper understanding of several important aspects, including coating ease of fabrication, coating strength, and actual anti-corrosion performance.

Abstract:Magnesium and its alloys are promising structural materials because of their lightweight. However the wide application of magnesium alloys is limited due to inferior corrosion resistance. So proper surface modification to improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys is of great importance. Microarc oxidation, laser treatment, ion implantation, physics vapor deposition(PVD) and ion beam assistant deposition(IBAD), etc, have prove to be effective for corrosion-resistance improvement of magnesium alloys. The paper presents the state and prospect of these techniques.

Abstract:Magnesium alloy has good application prospects in high-precision industries such as electronics and aerospace due to its low density, high stiffness, and excellent properties. However, the poor corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy limits its wide application. In this study, a corrosion-resistant protective coating of magnesium hydroxide doped with nano-silica was grown in situ on a magnesium alloy substrate by the hydrothermal method. The morphology, composition, structure, and corrosion resistance of the coating were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, FTIR, XRD, and electrochemical processes, respectively. The results showed that the prepared coating had good corrosion resistance, as the corrosion current of the magnesium alloy was reduced by about four orders of magnitude for the bare magnesium alloy substrate.

Abstract:This study reviews the recent progress in preparation and properties of diffusion coatings on magnesium alloys. Surface alloying of magnesium alloys by diffusion coatings has been considered as an effective approach to providing the protection of magnesium alloys because of the following distinct potential advantages. Firstly, the diffusion coating has high adhesion strength since there is a strong metallurgical bond between the coating and the substrate. Moreover, the good electrical conductivity of the coated magnesium alloy can be maintained and thus its electromagnetic shielding property will not be lost. In addition, the alloyed layer comprises of intermetallic compounds, which can improved both the corrosion resistance and the mechanical properties. Therefore, various methods have been developed in an effort to fabricate diffusion coatings on magnesium alloys. This review begins with the basic principles and challenges of fabricating diffusion coatings on magnesium alloys. The types and principles of coating methods are next described. The processes of preparing diffusion coatings can be categorized into two groups: (i) one-step processes including pack cementation, vacuum aluminizing, chemical vapor deposition and molten salt bath; (ii) multi-step processes such as surface mechanical attrition treatment plus pack cementation and post heat treatment of the metallic coatings. Based on understanding the principle of each coating process, the varied microstructures depending on the processing methods and parameters, are highlighted. The corrosion and mechanical properties of the coatings are also discussed on the basis of literature data. In particular, the corrosion property especial the passivation behavior of the diffusion coating is strongly influenced by the processing parameters and the subsequent coating microstructure. Through the experimental results obtained by various researchers, the coating process–microstructure–property relationships are discussed. This review closes with an outlook on areas that should be addressed in the future work.

Abstract:A composite coating on magnesium alloy is developed. The corrosion resistance of the coating is improved greatly by a combination of electroless nickel coating and nickel-zinc alloy electrodeposit. The coating is less than 35 micrometers thick, but can stand 800-1000 hours of neutral salt spray test, so can be used as a protective coating for magnesium alloys in severe corrosive environment.

Abstract:Magnesium and its alloys have received wide attention due to their excellent properties. However, magnesium alloy is easy to corrosion, limiting its large‐scale use. This review summarizes several typical anticorrosion methods for magnesium alloys, including anodic oxide film treatment, micro‐arc oxidation treatment, laser surface treatment, and superhydrophobic coating, etc. Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys have received much attention in the aerospace, transportation, automotive industry, and military equipment fields due to their unique chemical and physical properties, such as their low density and high specific strength, particularly as the lightest structural metal materials, with the opportunity to achieve the design of lighter engineering systems. With the continuous improvement of processing technology, the application scope of magnesium alloy is rapidly expanding, and market demand is increasing. However, because of its significant electronegativity (2.37 V) and loose naturally formed oxide coating, magnesium has low corrosion resistance in comparison to other structural metal elements, severely limiting its large‐scale use. This review summarizes several typical anticorrosion methods for magnesium alloys, including chemical conversion coating treatment, anodic oxide film treatment, micro‐arc oxidation treatment, laser surface treatment, ion implantation, physical vapor deposition, and superhydrophobic coating. In most cases, the corrosion resistance of magnesium and its alloys has improved, but it has a certain degree of environmental damage. It is hoped that this review will contribute to further developing magnesium alloy materials in the field of preservative coating.

Abstract:Magnesium-lithium(Mg-Li)alloy have attracted considerable interest in automobiles, aerospace,military and nuclear industries because of their super lightweight,high strength,high ductility and good formability. However,the high chemical activity of lithium means the Mg-Li alloys are susceptible to corrode in applied environment and difficult to protect,which limit their widespread practical application. Therefore,it is important to investigate the corrosion mechanism of Mg-Li alloys and develop efficiently anticorrosion technology. In this paper,a review was provided on the current status of corrosion mechanism of Mg-Li alloys in atmosphere,neutral and alkaline NaCl solution and Hank's solution based on recent progress at home and abroad. The corrosion behavior of Mg-Li alloys in different environment was introduced. The research progress of surface protection technologies for Mg-Li alloys were systematically summarized,including anodic oxidation,electroplating and electroless plating,chemical conversion coatings,coating and other surface anticorrosion methods. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods were analyzed. The future developments of the surface protection technology for Mg-Li alloy were also prospected. This paper proposed that anticorrosion and practicability of coatings for Mg-Li alloys could improve by composite,functionalization and self-healing.

Abstract:Due to the low density and high specific strength, magnesium and its alloys have been extensively used in the automobile and aerospace applications, where the weight reduction is critical. However, they are highly prone to corrosion, which has greatly limited their application in the automotive and aerospace industries. This paper briefly reviews the technologies for improving the corrosion and wear resistance of magnesium alloys and finds that the widespread application of magnesium alloys is still limited by the lack of proper protective coatings. Therefore, there is still a need to explore new materials and methods for the effective protection of magnesium and its alloys.

Abstract:Magnesium alloys are of significant importance for lightweight manufacturing and weight-saving applications due to their high weight-to-strength ratio and good mechanical properties. However, the poor corrosion resistance of Mg alloys limits their large-scale practical application. An essential theoretical foundation for the development of corrosion-resistant magnesium alloys and their surface protection technologies can be elucidated via the investigation of the corrosion mechanism of the magnesium surface and the alteration of the corrosion rate after surface conversion and coating. This paper discusses some typical corrosion behaviors by originally describing the corrosion mechanism of magnesium alloys with and without different coatings and surface treatments. In order to predict the future theoretical investigation and research directions for the surface protection of magnesium alloys, some techniques and preventative measures to enhance the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys are reviewed, and these protection techniques are intercompared for better understanding.

Abstract:Abstract Magnesium, as one of the lightest metal structural materials, also has its advantages such as high specific strength, good electromagnetic shielding characteristics, good processability and easy recycling, so it has a wide application prospect. However, its poor insulation, corrosion resistance, wear resistance and other properties limited it to be an alloy that can be used in a large area. Therefore, how to improve the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of magnesium alloy is the key to promote the development of magnesium alloy field. This paper reviews the research progress of using magnetron sputtering technology to prepare ceramic composite film on the surface of magnesium alloy and briefly introduces the film corrosion resistance and wear resistance of the thin films. It analyzes the impact of metal transition layer, process parameters and other factors on structure and properties of metal / ceramic coatings and prospects for the development prospects of magnetron sputtering in the field of magnesium alloy surface protection.

Abstract:Magnesium alloy possesses excellent mechanical and physical properties,thus making its application increasingly abroad in engineering.Magnesium alloy is an ideal material for loss of weight in automotive industry and aviation industry because of high specific strength;besides,magnesium alloy has tremendous potency of application because of its good electromagnetic interference resistance,excellent damping capacity and preferable environmental adequacy.But magnesium alloy is short of good self-repairing capacity,surface protection coat by natural passivation is liable to corrosion during use,especially in damp air,sea water,various organic acids and salt,inorganic acids etc.Nowadays,the method to modify magnesium is just surface coating,which could prevent magnesium alloy substrate from exotic environment.On the basis of combination of the author's work on magnesium alloy surface diffusion alloying with other's study on magnesium alloy modification including metal coating,anode coating and high energy beam technology treatment.This review the state of the art in modification technologies,applied to magnesium based substrates for improved corrosion and wear resistance.

Abstract:The clinic applications of bioabsorbable magnesium（Mg） and its alloys have been significantly restricted owing to their poor corrosion resistance. Besides elemental alloying, surface modification and functionality is a major approach to increasing corrosion resistance for magnesium alloys. This article reviews the cutting-edge advances and progress of biodegradable surface coatings upon Mg alloys over the last decades, aims to build up a knowledge framework of surface modification on biodegradable Mg alloys. A considerable number of conversion, deposition, mechanical and functional coatings and their preparation methods are discussed. The emphasis has been placed on the composition of chemical conversion and deposited coatings to overcome the disadvantages of adhesion, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of a single coating for biomedical materials. The issues have been addressed on the integration of the structural and functional factors of the composite coatings.

Abstract:Describes the formation process and structure of the oxidation film on the surface of Mg alloy to explain its tendency of corrosion, presents its corrosion mechanism, analyzes its unique negative difference effect from three different viewpoints and using a more reasonable theory as well, and introduces some protection techniques for the improvement of corrosion resistance in the surface of Mg alloy, including anodic oxidation which can provide good corrosion and abrasion resistances, laser aided treatment which can be applied easily to the local surface for improvement, physical vapor deposition which can improve surface anticorrosion, greater degree of crystallinity and better strength, and chemical treatment where a developed RE conversion coatings without any toxicity can replace the harmful chromate protective film.

Abstract:Industrial deployment of magnesium alloys in most instances requires anti-corrosion coatings. Distinct from conversion coatings, the electro/electroless plating techniques are emerging as the common means of coating magnesium; however, more research is needed. A state-of-the-art review was undertaken with respect to aqueous plating systems (including pretreatment, under-coating, and electroplating), electroless plating (being treated individually, though it is used as undercoating for subsequent plating in some cases), non-aqueous plating systems (including high-temperature molten salts and ionic liquids), and novel plating methods. In addition to the performance assessment of various plated coatings on magnesium alloys, merits and demerits of existing plating techniques are discussed. Based on the literature to date, the practical issues faced in magnesium plating are raised, and possible advances discussed, providing some instructive guidelines for future work.

Abstract:<p>With promising mechanical properties and biodegradability, magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are considered as potential candidates in both industrial and biomedical fields. However, rapid corrosion is a major obstacle that severely prevents their widespread applications. Surface modification is a cost-effective way to prevent the corrosive medium from contacting with Mg substrate. Generally, fabricating a dense and stable coating as a physical barrier can effectively inhibit the corrosion of Mg substrates. However, in some complex service environments, the coatings are inevitable to be damaged during use. In this case, it is essential to equip coatings with smart self-healing abilities. This article reviews recent advances in conventional physical barrier coatings and smart self-healing coatings on Mg alloys for industrial and biomedical applications. For physical barrier coatings, metal-based coatings, metal hydroxides and hydrotalcite coatings, metal oxide coatings, silane sol-gel coatings, polymer coatings, Ca–P coatings, and others like graphene-based coatings are mainly reviewed. For smart self-healing coatings, chemical conversion coatings, encapsulation coatings, and layer-by-layer assembled coatings are reviewed.</p>
