Abstract:With the popularity of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE), the clinical application of SMILE-derived lenticules has become a research hotspot due to the sufficient sources, good biocompatibility, and the ability of long-term storage. A large number of animal experiments and clinical studies have confirmed that SMILE-derived lenticules can be used for the treatment of hyperopia, presbyopia, keratoconus, and corneal ulcer and perforation. The safety and efficacy of this treatment are supported by many research studies. In order to provide reference for further research in this field, this review sheds light on the clinical application of lenticules and the issues that should be tackled before using them effectively and efficiently.

Abstract:<p>Contact lenses are ocular prosthetic devices used by over 150 million people worldwide. Primary applications of contact lenses include vision correction, therapeutics, and cosmetics. Contact lens materials have significantly evolved over time to minimize adverse effects associated with contact lens wearing, to maintain a regular corneal metabolism, and to preserve tear film stability. This article encompasses contact lens technology, including materials, chemical and physical properties, manufacturing processes, microbial contamination, and ocular complications. The function and the composition of the tear fluid are discussed to assess its potential as a diagnostic media. The regulatory standards of contact lens devices with regard to biocompatibility and contact lens market are presented. Future prospects in contact lens technology are evaluated, with particular interest given to theranostic applications for in situ continuous monitoring the ocular physiology.</p>

Abstract:The evolution of the slit-lamp microscope has enabled ophthalmologists to examine the transparent tissues of the eye with histological detail. This paper considers the history and optics of the slit-lamp. Optical sectioning and retro-illumination are discussed; particularly, effective placement of the reflected light beam. A variety of less conventional slit-lamp examination techniques is described. These include remote dark-field retro-illumination, examination through refractive surfaces (particularly, meniscus retro-illumination to demonstrate tear cells and non-contact corneal endothelial specular microscopy), location of vitreous abnormalities by parallax, expanding radial cords of vitreous cells in lymphoma, mirror examination of the superior fornix and corneal epithelial folds in ocular hypotension. It concludes with brief discussions about haemoglobin video imaging, semi-quantification of aqueous outflow volume by aqueous column cross-section area, and autofocus for video-microscopy.

Abstract:The application of endoscopic operation in ophthalmology has gotten great progression in recent years. It has showed many advantages such as more effectiveness, reliability and less damage, complications. Ophthalmic laser endoscopic operations can be applied in the management of glaucoma, vitreoretinopathy and so on. Lacrimal endoscopy in the treatment of lacrimal apparatus disease and nasal endoscopy in the Ophthalmo-Rhinol associated surgeries also has got great development. The application of ophthalmic endoscopic operation has indicated that the period of mini-wounded surgery in ophthalmology began. In this paper, we will describe the basic principle, status of application and prospect of endoscopic operation in ophthalmology.
Diffraction method for inspecting the defects of lenses with various curvature

Abstract:In this paper, a method for inspecting the defective lenses is proposed. Defects will not only affect the performance of the system, but also do harm to the experiment. Therefore, it is critical to find them out before lenses are used. The principle we adopted here is the laser diffraction and the light source we employed is a He-Ne laser whose diameter is closed to 0.5 mm when focused on the sample. Cooperated with the platform proposed, a convergent lens is placed to collect the diffracted light from the defects while the normal reflecting light is reflected by the mirror attached to it Thanks to this, the diffracted light can be separated simply. In addition, a circuit module with the chip named max44009 is applied to detect the intensity of diffractive light. Compared to the intensity data obtained by the computer with the threshold we have set automatically, the machine could judge whether the defect is existing. Moreover, this method can detect lenses with various curvatures and calibers. Finally, the system performance is assessed by conducting a series of tests using commercial lenses.

Abstract:A slit-lamp-based eye image acquisition and processing system is introduced.By refitting the photographic optical circuit of traditional slit lamp and replacing the original analog camera with digital camera, higher resolution digital images can be obtained in this system. It also can provide objective and quantified clinic diagnostic evidence by processing eye pictures using digital image processing techniques. In addition, efficient storage and remote transmission of patients' information and images are implemented in this system.

Abstract:With the demand for contact lenses increasing, measurement instrument and technology are needed for measuring the important parameters of contact lenses. A new method is proposed to use optical projection and self-scanning photodiode array to measure the curvature, optical center thickness and diameter of contact lenses. A new instrument based on the method has been successfully designed for measuring contact lenses. Its precision is superior to ±0.1 mm in lenses curvature, ±0.01 mm in optical center thickness, and ±0.1 mm in diameter. The measuring principal, special construction, signal sampling process of this new instrument and the design of the single-chip microcomputer hardware and software system are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Microorganisms, such as bacteria, are always detection objects in point-of-care testing, such as infectious diseases diagnosis, food safety monitoring and environment pollution detection. Optical microscopy is always a tool which is used to detect and analyze these detection objects. Lensless microscopy combines the sample with photodetectors such as charge coupled device (CCD) or complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS). This technique does not need optical devices, and the samples are imaged directly. The device is significantly simpler, smaller, easier to manipulate and cheaper than that of lens-based conventional microscope, which has been used in microstructure examinations, cell morphological analysis and microorganism detection. The lensless microscopic technology can be divided into three types, such as shadow imaging, fluorescence imaging and digital inline holography according to imaging principle. This paper reviews imaging principle and physical structure of three kinds of lensless microscopic technologies, and summaries the applications of lensless microscopic technologies in point-of-care testing. At last, we discuss the future development of lensless microscopic technologies.

Abstract:Objective To observe the application and effect of filtration test throughout trabeculectomy with adjunctive scleral flap suture. Methods 78 eyes(64 patients) underwent the filtration test throughout trabeculectomy.That was after the resection of trabecular,the suture of scleral flap and the sutre of conjunctival flap,water was injected into anterior chamber to check and adjust the situation of the filtration according to the test. Results There was no postoperative shallow anterior chamber.66 of 78 eyes formed the functional filtering blebs after six months. Conclusions The filtration test throughout trabeculectomy can effectively prevent the incidence of shallow anterior chamber,improve the quality and the safety of the operation.

Abstract:A rotary workpiece measurement system that has a combination of contact and non-contact measurement scheme is introduced.The application of telecentric lens in non-contact measurement is analyzed.The structure of rotary workpiece measurement system and the measurement scheme are introduced.The characteristic parameters of rotary workpiece are discussed.The non-contact measurement method should be used as much as possible in order to improve the measurement speed.Telecentric lens and parallel light are used in experiments.The result indicates that the parallel projection of telecentric lens can effectively solve the problem of the contour interference of rotary workpiece plane features.

Abstract:The opening of time of microsurgery by introduction of operation microscope into ophthalmic surgery rendered the coming of a new era of modem cataract surgery and vitreous surgery.However,after this time goes through half a century,telescopic loupes are still been advocated by most surgeons internationally.Is microsurgery a patent only for use in intraocular operations? Although an earliest exploration of using microscope in strabismus surgery in China was reported in the 90 s that discussed the technique of rectus ciliary vessel separation under microscope,no more followed after that.Since this century,some experts often as intraocular surgeons and some young doctors with background of microscopic training continued persistence in the exploration of microscopic strabismus surgery.During this process,the council of strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology of COS has been engaged in guiding its healthy development,unearthing its value in strabismus surgery and pursuing the raise of operation quality.This issue was hotly communicated and discussed at the 14 th national meeting of strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology held in Jinan in June,2011.This article summarized the goal and the importance of microscopic strabismus surgery and suggested the measures for the healthy development of microscopic strabismus surgery according to the current status.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the application of dark field microscope in ophthalmological researches.Methods The common ophthalmological samples,including cultured cornea epithelial cells cultured for 1 week,vascular net at corneal limbus in mice,retinal stretched preparation and preretinal membranes cut from operation on vitreous,were directly observed under dark field model and transmission light model by Nikon E800 microscope.Results The arrangement and distribution of microfilament in corneal cells were seen,and three-dimensional sensation enhanced under dark field model;Intracytoplasm structure,cell layer and morphologies of blood vessels were not clear under transmission microscope;Under dark field model,three-dimensional sensation of vascular net at corneal limbus in mice enhanced,color contrast was great,cell layer,morphologies and limits were clear,arrangement and morphologies of blood vessels were obviously clear.Compared with transmission light model,proliferative new vessels in preretinal membranes were clearly seen,arrangement and distribution of blood vessels could be observed clearly under dark field model.Conclusion Dark field microscope is easy to be used,help to observe pathological changes and has its unique superiority in ophthalmological researches.

Abstract:Eye drop solutions are widely used by the ophthalmologist to treat the anterior segment eye diseases. However, eye drop solutions have many limitations including low bioavailability, high dose requirements, and poor patient compliance. Contact lenses are used to deliver the ocular drugs with high ocular bioavailability due to their immediate location to ocular surface. Based on the contact lenses, loading conventional drugs are used to explore the feasibility and potential to treat anterior eye disorders. Drug incorporated to the lens body is achieved with techniques, like simple soaking, inclusion of drug-loaded colloidal nanoparticles, or molecular imprinting. No matter what technique used, the key properties of the contact lens maintain unchanged, such as transparency and oxygen permeability. The drug delivery system based on contact lenses can effectively prevent and control ocular surface infection, promote corneal injury healing, treat allergic conjunctivitis, improve dry eye symptoms, and reduce intraocular pressure. Abstract:AIM: To describe the application of image acquisition function of smart phone with slit lamp examination in the ophthalmology residency training program.METHODS: The supporting set for smart phone can be securely connected to the ocular lens of slit lamp microscopy. The anterior or fundus photos and dynamic videos were obtained through slit lamp examination with non-contact lens, three-mirror lens or gonio lens. Acquired images or recorded videos were transmitted to ophthalmology trainee by using wireless local area network(WLAN), WeChat and other software.RESULTS: High quality images and dynamic video could be successfully taken with smart phone and supporting set by slit lamp examination, which could clearly display tissue details and pathological features. The fast transmission of image data can enable more trainees to access clinic education resource simultaneously and communicate with each other timely and effectively.CONCLUSION: High resolution smart phones are wildly used and supporting sets are very accessible; thus high quality of images could be easily obtained for clinical teaching purpose. Furthermore, it enriches the clinical teaching resources. So the application of image acquisition function of smart phone with slit lamp examination is worthy in the standardized training of ophthalmology residents.
