Abstract:The pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM)'s development history and recent research achievements of main domestic and overseas organizations are reviewed. Research work in basic characteristics and modeling,structure optimization and control strategy are summarized. The results indicate that PAM can be modeled from several aspects such as the equivalent work and elasticity theory; its performance is improved through various structure optimizations; different control strategies such as robust design,adaptive control,and intelligent control are adopted according to different PAM system characteristics. Judging from the current development trend,the PAM's working mechanism analysis and high accuracy control are difficult to have a breakthrough in short term. Comparatively,the new structural design and application work will grow rapidly. A broad application can be expected in the fields of bionics,physical therapy,virtual reality and so on.

Abstract:Sarcopenia is characterized by a loss of skeletal muscle mass and a decrease in muscle strength and function.The major etiological factors of sarcopenia include lack of exercise,decline of neuromuscular function,malnutrition and so on.Sarcopenia is associated with decreased numbers and function of muscle stem cells(also known as satellite cells).Muscle stem cells have a strong ability of self-renewal,with multi-potency,immune privilege,and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and are capable of promoting skeletal muscle regeneration.The mechanisms underlying cell proliferation,differentiation and self-renewal of satellite cells are not clear,but the number and activity of satellite cells are related to sarcopenia.Satellite cells work together with a variety of proliferation and differentiation factors to regulate muscle cell formation and muscle repair.Especially noteworthy is that p38α binds to a large number of myogenic gene promoters to regulate the proliferation and differentiation of satellite cells.In animal experiments,muscle stem cell therapy has shown regeneration and repair of muscle cells.Studies on changes at the molecular and gene levels in muscle fibers and their environment will be of great significance for the prevention and treatment of muscular disorders in the elderly.
Study on the Changes in Muscle Mass in Elderly People of Different Ages in Hangzhou

Abstract:Objective To investigate the changing characteristics of muscle mass by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in middle aged and elderly people with different ages.Methods This study included 343 healthy people aged 50-89 years (178 males and 165 females).Subjects were divided into 4 groups:aged 50-59,60-69,70-79,and 80-89 years group.Fat-free body mass (FFM),the appendicular lean body mass (aLM),trunk lean mass (tLM) were measured by DEXA.The aLM/body weight (Wt％) and aLM index (ASMI) were calculated by DEXA.Results The tLM in both gender was decreased in aged 80-89 years group than in aged 50-59 years group [male (10.6± 1.8) kg vs.(18.4±2.9) kg,female (7.1±1.2) kg vs.(14.8±2.1) kg,F=5.7 and 7.8,P＜ 0.01].The average ASMI in both gender was decreased in aged 70-79 and 80-89 years groups than in aged 50-59 years groups [male (5.5±0.4) kg/m2,(4.9±0.7) kg/m2 vs.(6.1±0.5) kg/m2,female (4.3±0.4) kg/m2,(3.9±0.5) kg/m2 vs.(4.8±0.6) kg/m2,F=24.9 and 9.6,both P＜0.01].The quality of muscle mass was decreased with aging in the elderly.Conclusions Ageing is an important risk factor for sarcopenia in the elderly.DEXA can be used to evaluate the muscle mass in middle aged and the elderly,and ASMI can be used as a reliable measurement index.
Age-Related Changes of Skeletal Muscle Mass and Muscle Strength in Chinese Urban Residents

Abstract:Purpose:To investigate age-related change of skeletal muscle mass and muscle strength in Chinese urban residents.Methods:A total of 1 013 Chinese urban residents(468 men,545women)aged 3~69 in Jinan,Guangzhou,Chengdu and Xi'an participated in this study.The body weight,height,hand grip and some other physical fitness variables were measured according to the handbook of national physical fitness surveillance in 2005.The skeletal muscle mass were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA),and leg strength were measured by Muscle Evaluation System(MES).One way ANOVA was used to compare selected variables among different age groups.Results and conclusions:1) skeletal muscle mass of Chinese urban residents increased from 3 to 19 years old.Both men and women got their peak muscle mass level at age of 20~24 years.Then,the muscle mass began to decreased slowly.2) Both hand grip strength and leg strength of Chinese urban residents kept increasing since their birth until 30~40 years old.After that,hand grip strength began to slowly decrease.Compared with hand grip strength,the leg strength of Chinese urban residents decreased more quickly.3) The decrease of muscle strength is caused by both decrease in muscle mass and decrease in muscle strength per unit.

This review discusses recent research advancements on muscle strength loss from various perspectives, including factors contributing to muscle strength decline, the signaling pathways involved in the deterioration of muscle function, and the methods for assessing muscle strength. The final section explores the influence of exercise stimulation and nutrition on muscle strength.

Abstract:With increasing age, human skeletal muscles gradually decrease in volume, mainly due to a reduced number of motor units and muscle fibers, and a reduced size of type 2 fibers. As a result, progressive weakening and impaired mobility occur. High-resistance strength training is beneficial, even in the very old, and could possibly reverse some of the detrimental effects of age-related weakness. The importance of exercise for older people affords an excellent opportunity for the medicine community as a major source of information and promotion of physical activity for this rapidly growing segment of the population. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of the effects of aging on the human neuromuscular system, describe some of the major underlying mechanisms of the aging atrophy and focus on the importance of strength training to improve muscle function in older people.

Abstract:In this article, the author studies the age and gender characteristics of knee extensor isokinetic muscle strength development of 240 primary pupils aged 7-12. The result shows that peak torque of knee extensor increases with age by the rate 13. 2Nm per year. There is no significant difference in peak torque of knee extensor development among all age groups. The increasing rate of thigh circumference is much slower than peak torque of knee extensor and there is mild correlation for each other.

Abstract:Based on the physiological mechanism of strength training of junior athletes ,this pa‐per firstly clarifies the some cognitive errors that has been around the junior athlete’s strength training ,and studies the athlete’s strength training effect and method ,the hot issues in practi‐cal training and training development trend .At the level of physiological mechanism ,because the junior athlete’s physical development is not yet mature ,the level of hormone synthesis is low ,muscle fiber hypertrophy in its efforts to enhance the contribution is smaller ,so improve‐ment of pow er during the period is to improve the innervation ability .In training practice ,it is recommended to choose the combination of plyometric and speed strength training cycle model . Among them ,strength training load intensity is key indicators of training program :by not less than 50% 1 RM the load intensity of stimulation ,in order to achieve the lowest stimulation threshold of junior athletes and reach the goal of improving their strength .In this paper ,the hot issues of strength training to the growth and development of junior athletes ,sports injury problems and strength maintain and loss are also discussed .At last ,this paper discusses the development trend of the youth strength training in theory ,method and load characteristics .
Characteristics of Young and Old Men and Women BMD Changes after Resistance Exercises

Abstract:Methods: 35 young men and women aging 20-30 and 35 old men and women aging 65-70 are randomly selected as the subjects and they are divided into 4 groups with different ages and genders.They are subject to five months of resistance training to their lower limbs,3-4 times each week.Before and after the experiment,all the subjects' lower limbs are tested with 12RM of the lower limbs and RM muscle testing,and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA) is used to measure the BMD of lumbar(L2-L4) and the near-end femoral zone(femoral neck,Wards triangle,greater trochanter).Single factor analysis of variance and multiple comparison are later used to detect the differences of the experimental data of each group.At the same time,Pearson correlation analysis is adopted to judge the relationship between BMD and muscle strength.Conclusion: all subjects' BMD at near-end of the femoral zone increases significantly with no age or gender differences.Only the BMD at the femoral neck of some young subjects is higher than that in some old subjects.
Advances in the Relationship of Myostatin and Double-Muscling Phenotype

Abstract:Myostatin, a member of the TGF-β superfamily, functions as a negative regulator of skeletal muscle development and growth. Myostatin is expressed almost exclusively in skeletal muscle and is involved in many human diseases. The sequence of myostatin is highly conserved across species, which suggests the conservation of its function. Mutations of myostatin may give rise to a significantly increase of skeletal muscle, which is also called a double-muscling phenotype. Animal with a double-muscling phenotype is characterized not only by hypertrophy of muscles, but also by less fat, increased tenderness and higher proportion of expensive cuts of meat. More over, those fats remaining tend to be polyunsaturated varieties. All of these characteristics conform strongly to current health standards, as well as accord with the goal of breeding program. In this paper, the research advances in the relationship between myostatin and double-muscling phenotype were reviewed.

Abstract:AIM: To provide an evidence-based review of muscle metabolism changes with sex-, age- and maturation with reference to the development of youth sport performance.METHODS: A narrative review of data from both invasive and non-invasive studies, from 1970 to 2015, founded on personal databases supported with computer searches of PubMed and Google Scholar.RESULTS: Youth sport performance is underpinned by sex-, age- and maturation-related changes in muscle metabolism. Investigations of muscle size, structure and metabolism; substrate utilisation; pulmonary oxygen uptake kinetics; muscle phosphocreatine kinetics; peak anaerobic and aerobic performance; and fatigue resistance; determined using a range of conventional and emerging techniques present a consistent picture. Age-related changes have been consistently documented but specific and independent maturation-related effects on muscle metabolism during exercise have proved elusive to establish. Children are better equipped for exercise supported primarily by oxidative metabolism than by anaerobic metabolism. Sexual dimorphism is apparent in several physiological variables underpinning youth sport performance. As young people mature there is a progressive but asynchronous transition into an adult metabolic profile.CONCLUSIONS: The application of recent developments in technology to the laboratory study of the exercising child and adolescent has both supplemented existing knowledge and provided novel insights into developmental exercise physiology. A sound foundation of laboratory-based knowledge has been established but the lack of rigorously designed child-specific and sport-specific testing environments has clouded the interpretation of the data in real life situations. The primary challenge remains the translation of laboratory research into the optimisation of youth sports participation and performance.

Abstract:Skeletal muscle contributes significantly to human health, such as locomotion, energy metabolism, and immune regulation. The development of muscle tissue engineering better mimics complex muscle structure and functions. This review summarizes emerging strategies to fabricate biomimetic muscle tissue with various cell resources mimicking the architecture and physiology of muscle tissue and their applications. Skeletal muscle contributes significantly to human health, which is closely relevant to human locomotion, energy metabolism, immune regulation, and aging. Skeletal muscle holds the potential to recover its healthy condition via self‐repairing after minor damage. However, the capacity of sarcous self‐repair becomes incompetent following massive trauma or some myopathy, which raises a huge demand for skeletal muscle regeneration. Skeletal muscle engineering aims to rebuild muscle tissues in vitro to repair muscle injuries, develop pathological models, advance myopathy‐related research, and explore myopathy‐related medications. This review summarizes the advances in skeletal muscle engineering, including the cell resources that can be used in muscle regeneration, the recent progress of rebuilding methods for skeletal muscle engineering, as well as the biomedical applications of engineered skeletal muscle for tissue repair, drug testing, disease modeling, and soft robots. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives are discussed on improving skeletal muscle engineering by integrating multidisciplinary approaches, thus accelerating the technological innovation and translational application of this area.

Abstract:Skeletal muscle (SkM) is essential for body movement, energy metabolism, and material metabolism, and directly influences the quality of human life. Aging, chronic diseases, and strenuous exercise often lead to various health problems associated with SkM, including muscle atrophy, loss of muscle mass and strength, and metabolic disorders. Various natural products(NaPs), mainly resveratrol (RES), quercetin (QUE), ursolic acid (UA), ecdysone (ECD; mainly 20-OH ECD, 20-HE), and vitamin D, have been reported to protect or regulate SkM health. Some of the products are functionally equivalent to sex hormones, and some are even referred to as "plant exercise pills." However, controversy persists regarding the role of NaPs in SkM health. Therefore, this review objectively summarizes the in vivo and vitro biological activities, molecular mechanisms, and clinical research results of studies on NaPs applied in the regulation of SkM health over the past decade. The present review could advance further research on NaPs and SkM health, and facilitate the revelation of new evidence that could facilitate the application of NaPs in ensuring SkM health.

Free-Weight Resistance Training in Youth Athletes: A Narrative Review

Abstract:Generating high levels of muscular strength and power are important for success in sport and may have long-term implications for sporting careers in youth athletes. Importantly, maturation may confound the neuromuscular adaptations to resistance training when attempting to differentiate between training- vs. growth-induced strength and power gains; thus, potentially leading to erroneous conclusions regarding the efficacy of resistance training in youth athletes. The aim of this review was to critically appraise the literature concerning the efficacy of externally loaded free-weight resistance training on strength and power measures in youth athletes at different stages of maturity. Strength underpins power production; thus, developing strength through traditional resistance training methods can positively influence powerful sporting movements. In addition, weightlifting has the capacity to improve muscular power via explosive lower-body triple extension, which is essential for many sports. Despite the complexity of the techniques involved, it can be a safe and effective method to improve athletic qualities in young athletes, potentially more so than plyometric training. While low-load, high-velocity training can have a positive effect influence on high speed movements such as sprinting, the reduced intensity appears to be disadvantageous post peak-height velocity. Irrespective of age, well-coached progressive strength training adhering strictly to correct technique can then be periodised within a long-term athletic development program. It is important to primarily develop muscular strength, while concurrently refining the technical skill required for weightlifting. Physically mature athletes should undertake high-intensity resistance training to maximise neuromuscular adaptations, leading to positive changes in strength and power.
Age- and sex-related differences in muscle strength and physical performance in older Chinese

Abstract:Background Little is known about muscle strength and physical performance in Chinese. Aim This study aimed to assess the age- and sex-related differences in muscle strength and physical performance in older Chinese. Methods Three hundred and eight healthy participants (110 males and 198 females) age 68.3 ± 6.1 (mean ± SD) years were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The handgrip muscle strength (HGS) of the dominant hand was measured using a Jamar dynamometer. Physical performance was assessed by the Timed Up and Go test (TUG). The EuroQol five-dimension questionnaire (EQ-5D) was used to evaluate participants’ health status. Results Men showed higher levels of HGS with a smaller percentage having low muscle strength compared with women. No differences were observed in TUG between sexes. No significant association of TUG and age was observed in males. However, older females had increased TUG and hence poorer performance. Good health status was associated with better physical performance but was not related to muscle strength in either sex. Discussion In men, there was no correlation between age and TUG, although a negative association with handgrip muscle strength was observed. For women, both muscle strength and physical performance declined with age. The sex-related differences in aging effects on physical performance in our study could partly explain why women have a higher incidence of hip fracture than men. Conclusion Chinese women may be more vulnerable to severe sarcopenia in old age than men.

Abstract:The early concept of sports biomechanics refers to biomechanics in sports, which mainly solves the problems of performance enhancement and injury prevention. With the integrated development of related disciplines, the research of sports biomechanics has been extended to the fields of biology, medicine, mechanics, et al. The advance of intelligent testing, big data and artificial intelligence technologies greatly promotes the experimental measurement technologies and simulation methods of sports biomechanics. The renewal of technology and method has gradually expanded and deepened the research content and direction of this discipline and also offered new challenges. This review summarizes the recent advances and points out the development trends and key issues in sports biomechanics.The muscle constitutive theory and calculation of muscle force are the key points in the theoretical modeling and simulation calculation of sports biomechanics. The new testing methods play important role in the competitive sports. Among them the human key point detection algorithm based on deep learning has made a breakthrough in solving the non-contact measurement of competitive sports. The macroscopic damage mechanism of bone, ligament, cartilage, muscle and other tissues has been clarified, but the prediction of their early damage and the mechanism of cross-scale damage still need to be further studied. Intelligent wearable equipment, artificial intelligence and other new technologies have been applied to the research of sports biomechanics and become the hot topics. This review shows that the current research of sports biomechanics is developing towards intelligence, individualization and quantification, integrating with the related disciplines, and continuously promoting the development of scientific and technological innovation in sports, health, medical and other fields.
