Abstract:Endogenous plant hormones are important for the development of plant organs and for their traits. The contents of abscisic acid(ABA),indoleacetic acid(IAA),zeatin riboside(ZR),and gibberellin acid(GA)of the female inflorescence of three maize inbred lines characterized with different sinks, including 082(multiple ears with abnormal development of the 1st ear),3H-2(normal multiple ears),and 48-2(single ear),were determined with ELISA.The results indicated that from 20days to 0day before silking(DBS),GA content in the female inflorescence steadily declined in 082,but decreased firstly and then increased in 3H-2and 48-2.In the late period of female inflorescence development ABA content exhibited an obvious increasing trend in 082,but slightly decreased in 3H-2and 48-2.In view of the balance of these 4hormones,the ratios of IAA/ZR and ABA/ZR in the young ears remained at the lowest level at the stage of 12DBS in 082and 3H-2,while these ratios in 48-2reached the highest level at this stage. These results suggested that 12days before silking might be the critical developing stage that determines the other female inflorescences except the 1st one,and that the low ratios of IAA/ZR and ABA/ZR could restrain the development of the 1st ear and promote the development of the other ears, while the high ratios of these hormones may accelerate the development of the 1st ear and inhibit the development of the other ears, which agrees well with earlier reports about tiller performance in cereal crops. It is hoped that chemical control and high yield inbred breeding would benefit from this conclusion.
