Abstract:<p>In this paper, a lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is proposed for a class of viscous shallow water equations, in which a second-order moment of the source term is applied to recover the viscosity in the governing equation and eliminate the additional errors generated during the Chapman-Enskog analysis. There are three different schemes based on different treatments of the source term. Through numerical simulations of several classical benchmark problems, we find that the second-order moment of the source term can not only improve the accuracy of the LB model, but also ensure the conservation of the system. In addition, the influence of rainfall intensity on shallow water flow is also taken into account, and the results show that present LB model can also accurately study such problems as overland flows.</p>

Abstract:This study proposes a novel framework of the lattice Boltzmann model for multilayer shallow water equations, considering the mass and momentum exchanges between layers (LABMSWE+). Compared with the original LABMSWE model consisting of N two-dimensional lattice Boltzmann method for shallow water equation (LABSWE) models, the new model includes 1+N LABSWE models. The singular LABSWE model with unit relaxation time is introduced to update the total water depth, and thus, the layer water depths can be obtained explicitly through the fixed layer ratios. The N-layer LABSWE models with the multiple-relaxation-time operator evolve the layer velocities. These two modules are coupled by the total water depth and depth-averaged velocities. The constructed model avoids the freely variable layer thicknesses, which is considered as the main source of the instability. In addition, the mass exchanges enable this model to simulate vertical circulation flows, which are beyond the application of the LABMSWE model. Several numerical tests are then conducted to validate the proposed model. The results show that it exactly satisfies the C-property. In addition, the central difference scheme is more stable and accurate than the upwind and nonequilibrium schemes in the computing of the mass exchanges. The numerical results have an excellent agreement with analytical solutions and reference data, while some unstable and nonphysical results are obtained by the original LABMSWE model. Moreover, the computational time is about 40%–60% of that for the MIKE3, a finite volume solver for the three-dimensional shallow water equations by the Danish Hydraulic Institute.

Abstract:Conservation of mass or water balance is important for the simulation of shallow water projects. The traditional treatment of discharge and water level boundary conditions ignores it in the lattice Boltzmann model for shallow water equations (LABSWE). In this paper, we introduced the water balance equation at these boundary conditions and proposed a universal treatment for the straight boundary of any direction. Six schemes on the unknown particle distribution functions (PDFs) at boundary lattices for given macroscopic quantities (h,u,v) were compared in terms of accuracy and stability, and the nonequilibrium extrapolation (NEQ) scheme and full link nonequilibrium extrapolation (Ful-NEQ) scheme were finally adopted in the proposed treatment. The numerical tests show that the proposed treatment fully satisfies the specified boundary conditions and conservation of mass. Moreover, the distribution of the velocities at the boundaries is consistent along downstream which can reduce the artificial influence length of the boundary.

Abstract:A new approach was recently proposed to construct equilibrium distribution functions [Formula: see text] of the lattice Boltzmann method for simulation of compressible flows. In this approach, the Maxwellian function is replaced by a simple function which satisfies all needed relations to recover compressible Euler equations. With Lagrangian interpolation polynomials, the simple function is discretized onto a fixed velocity pattern to construct [Formula: see text]. In this paper, the finite volume method is combined with the new lattice Boltzmann models to simulate 1D and 2D shock-wave propagation. The numerical results agree well with available data in the literatures.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, a simplified lattice Boltzmann method (SLBM) without evolution of the distribution function is developed for simulating incompressible viscous flows. This method is developed from the application of fractional step technique to the macroscopic Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations recovered from lattice Boltzmann equation by using Chapman-Enskog expansion analysis. In SLBM, the equilibrium distribution function is calculated from the macroscopic variables, while the non-equilibrium distribution function is simply evaluated from the difference of two equilibrium distribution functions. Therefore, SLBM tracks the evolution of the macroscopic variables rather than the distribution function. As a result, lower virtual memories are required and physical boundary conditions could be directly implemented. Through numerical test at high Reynolds number, the method shows very nice performance in numerical stability. An accuracy test for the 2D Taylor-Green flow shows that SLBM has the second-order of accuracy in space. More benchmark tests, including the Couette flow, the Poiseuille flow as well as the 2D lid-driven cavity flow, are conducted to further validate the present method; and the simulation results are in good agreement with available data in literatures.

Abstract:In this work, a new lattice Boltzmann model for a class of viscous wave equation is proposed through the variable transformation, which eliminates the mixed third order partial derivative term of time and space. Some numerical tests are performed to validate the present model, and the results show that the present model has a second-order convergence rate in space.

Abstract:The lattice Boltzmann model for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation is proposed. The new model is based on the technique of the higher order moment of equilibrium distribution functions and a series of lattice Boltzmann equations in different time scales. The Euler equations are derived from the nonlinear Schrodinger equation by removing non-physical pressure. We have simulated two irrotational flows. These numerical results agree well with classical ones.

Abstract:In this paper, a hybrid lattice Boltzmann flux solver (LBFS) is proposed for simulation of viscous compressible flows. In the solver, the finite volume method is applied to solve the Navier-Stokes equations. Different from conventional Navier-Stokes solvers, in this work, the inviscid flux across the cell interface is evaluated by local reconstruction of solution using one-dimensional lattice Boltzmann model, while the viscous flux is still approximated by conventional smooth function approximation. The present work overcomes the two major drawbacks of existing LBFS [28-31], which is used for simulation of inviscid flows. The first one is its ability to simulate viscous flows by including evaluation of viscous flux. The second one is its ability to effectively capture both strong shock waves and thin boundary layers through introduction of a switch function for evaluation of inviscid flux, which takes a value close to zero in the boundary layer and one around the strong shock wave. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the present solver can accurately and effectively simulate hypersonic viscous flows.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new Lagrangian lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for simulating the compressible flows. The new scheme simulates fluid flows based on the displacement distribution functions. The compressible flows, such as shock waves and contact discontinuities are modelled by using Lagrangian LBM. In this model, we select the element in the Lagrangian coordinate to satisfy the basic fluid laws. This model is a simpler version than the corresponding Eulerian coordinates, because the convection term of the Euler equations disappears. The numerical simulations conform to classical results. Linear discrete velocity model-based lattice Boltzmann flux solver for simulating acoustic propagation in fluids

Abstract:A linear lattice velocity model is developed, and a corresponding lattice Boltzmann flux solver (LBFS) is constructed based on it. This solver calculates the fluxes of the linearized Euler equations (LEEs), which are discretized by the finite volume method (FVM), and can simulate acoustic propagation in fluids. First, the expressions for the distribution function and the lattice velocity of the linear discrete velocity model are constructed using the moment relations in linear form. Second, based on Chapman-Enskog analysis and moment relations, the mesoscopic flux expression can be constructed by comparing the linear lattice Boltzmann equation and LEEs. Finally, the developed scheme is used to calculate the LEE flux term. The developed linear lattice velocity model-based LBFS has the following advantages: (i) It extends the lattice Boltzmann model-based flux solver from solving the macroscopic equations of fluid dynamics to solving linear equations; (ii) it also inherits the advantages of the Boltzmann model-type flux solver. The variables at the interface are calculated from the local solution of the lattice Boltzmann equation, making it more physical. In addition, least-squares-based finite differences and Gaussian integration are used for the FVM to discretize the LEE, making it a high-precision algorithm. Thus, the developed algorithm can accurately capture acoustic propagation in fluids and acoustic scattering in complex geometries. Several numerical cases for propagating acoustics in fluids are simulated to validate the accuracy and robustness of the present algorithm, and an accuracy test shows it approaches fourth-order accuracy.

Abstract:In the last decade or so, the Lattice–Boltzmann method (LBM) has achieved great success in computational fluid dynamics. The Fully–Lagrangian method (FLM) is the generalization of LBM for conservation systems. LBM can also be developed from FLM. In this paper a FL model and a LB model are developed for D -dimensional advection-diffusion equation. The LB model can be viewed as an improved version of the FL model. Numerical results of simulation of 1-dimensional advection-diffusion equation are presented. The numerical results are found to be in good agreement with the analytic solution.

Abstract:A new immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) is proposed and validated in this work by its application to simulate incompressible viscous flows. The conventional IB-LBM based on the lattice Boltzmann equation with external forcing term, which contains a boundary velocity to represent the effect that the moving boundary exerts on the bounce-back distribution functions, whereas the present method use the boundary velocity to compute the momentum exchange in terms of the momentum theorem. Moreover, the momentum exchange based IB-LBM meets the Galilean invariance. Numerical examples show that the present method can provide very accurate numerical results.

Abstract:A new immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) is presented in this work. In the conventional IB-LBM, the restoring force is pre-calculated, which makes the non-slip boundary condition to be only approximately satisfied. As a result, the streamline penetration to the solid body occurs. In the present study, the velocity correction ( restoring force) is considered as unknown. It is determined in such a way that the non-slip boundary condition is enforced. As compared with conventional IB-LBM, the solution procedure of current IB-LBM is almost the same except that the non-slip boundary condition is guaranteed in the present scheme while it is only approximately satisfied in the conventional scheme. Numerical results for simulation of flows over fixed circular cylinders showed that the present method can provide accurate solutions without any streamline penetration phenomenon.

Abstract:The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has gained increasing popularity in incompressible viscous flow simulations, but it uses many distribution functions (far more than the flow variables) and is often memory demanding. This disadvantage was overcome by a recent approach that solves the more actual macroscopic equations obtained through Taylor series expansion analysis of the lattice Boltzmann equations [Lu et al., J. Comput. Phys. 415, 109546 (2020)]. The key is to keep some small additional terms (SATs) to stabilize the numerical solution of the weakly compressible Navier-Stokes equations. However, there are many SATs that complicate the implementation of their method. Based on some analyses and numerous tests, we ultimately pinpoint two essential ingredients for stable simulations: (1) suitable density (pressure) diffusion added to the continuity equation and (2) proper numerical dissipation related to the velocity divergence added to the momentum equations. Then we propose a simplified method that is not only easier to implement but noticeably faster than the original method and the LBM. It contains much simpler SATs that only involve the density (pressure) derivatives, and it requires no intermediate steps or variables. As well, it is extended for thermal flows with small temperature variations and for two-phase flows with uniform density and viscosity. Several test cases, including some two-phase problems under two-dimensional, axisymmetric, and three-dimensional geometries, are presented to demonstrate its capability. This work may help pave the way for the simplest simulation of incompressible viscous flows on collocated grids based on the artificial compressibility methodology.

Abstract:A linear lattice Boltzmann flux solver (LLBFS) is developed based on the high-precision finite-volume method (FVM) and is used to simulate problems involving acoustic propagation. The least-squares-based finite difference (LSFD) is used to construct the high-precision FVM, which discretizes the linear Navier–Stokes equations (LNSE). In terms of the flux calculation for the interface of the control cell, the LLBFS is derived by comparing the macroscopic and microscopic variables through the Chapman–Enskog (C-E) multi-scale analysis, which establishes the relationship between the linear lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) and the LNSE. The algorithm has the following advantages. First, the proposed LLBFS inherits the advantages of the lattice Boltzmann flux solver (LBFS), i.e., the local solution of the lattice Boltzmann equation is used to calculate the fluxes; handling the inviscid and viscous fluxes simultaneously makes for a more consistent algorithm and it can be expanded to the multi-dimensional scheme without approximation. Second, solving the LNSE using the high-precision FVM on unstructured grids, which enables problems involving acoustic waves interacting with complex geometries can be simulated conveniently. To validate the accuracy and robustness of the proposed method, several cases are simulated, including acoustic waves propagating in an inviscid and viscous mean flow and interacting with complex geometries.

Abstract:An immersed boundary-simplified lattice Boltzmann method is developed in this paper for simulations of two-dimensional incompressible viscous flows with immersed objects. Assisted by the fractional step technique, the problem is resolved in a predictor-corrector scheme. The predictor step solves the flow field without considering immersed objects, and the corrector step imposes the effect of immersed boundaries on the velocity field. Different from the previous immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method which adopts the standard lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) as the flow solver in the predictor step, a recently developed simplified lattice Boltzmann method (SLBM) is applied in the present method to evaluate intermediate flow variables. Compared to the standard LBM, SLBM requires lower virtual memories, facilitates the implementation of physical boundary conditions, and shows better numerical stability. The boundary condition-enforced immersed boundary method, which accurately ensures no-slip boundary conditions, is implemented as the boundary solver in the corrector step. Four typical numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the stability, the flexibility, and the accuracy of the present method.

Abstract:We used the lattice Boltzmann method to study the wave-like equation with variable coefficients.We constructed a lattice Boltzmann model for the wave-like equation with variable coefficients.By using this model,the two-and three-dimensional wave-like equation with variable coefficients are simulated.By comparison between these results and analytic solutions,we find that this method can be used to simulate wave-like problems with variable coefficients.

Abstract:A hybrid immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) is presented in this work to simulate the thermal flow problems. In current approach, the flow field is resolved by using our recently developed boundary condition-enforced IB-LBM (Wu and Shu, (2009)). The nonslip boundary condition on the solid boundary is enforced in simulation. At the same time, to capture the temperature development, the conventional energy equation is resolved. To model the effect of immersed boundary on temperature field, the heat source term is introduced. Different from previous studies, the heat source term is set as unknown rather than predetermined. Inspired by the idea in (Wu and Shu, (2009)), the unknown is calculated in such a way that the temperature at the boundary interpolated from the corrected temperature field accurately satisfies the thermal boundary condition. In addition, based on the resolved temperature correction, an efficient way to compute the local and average Nusselt numbers is also proposed in this work. As compared with traditional implementation, no approximation for temperature gradients is required. To validate the present method, the numerical simulations of forced convection are carried out. The obtained results show good agreement with data in the literature.
