Abstract:The induced electromagnetic field generated by complex seawater motion seriously affects the detection and discrimination accuracy of ship magnetic signals. Based on the spectral correlation between the induced electromagnetic field of ship propellers and shaft frequency magnetic field signals, the wavelet coherence of Hx and Hy components in extremely low frequency magnetic signals is calculated by cross wavelet transform and coherence analysis to realize the detection and discrimination of ship magnetic signals. After the sea trial data verification, this method can effectively eliminate the interference of seawater induced electromagnetic field, and has good engineering application value.

First Passage Probability of Nonlinear Ship Rolling in Random Seas

Abstract:The first passage failure theory is applied in studying the stability of a ship under stochas-tic wave excitations.The ship's rolling equation is first reduced to a set of first order stochastic differ-ential equations by applying a set of transformations based upon generalized harmonic functions. Then,closed-form expressions for the averaged drift and diffusion coefficients for the amplitude pro-cess differential equation are obtained by utilizing a new stochastic averaging procedure.Next, a Pon-tryagin-Vitt equation governing the mean first passage time of the rolling amplitude process is estab-lished. The two boundary conditions for the Pontryagin-Vitt equation are derived, and the mean first passage time and the first passage probability density values are obtained by numerically solving the boundary value problem.

Abstract:The ship-rocking is a crucial factor which affects the accuracy of the ocean-based flight vehicle measurement. Here we have analyzed four groups of ship-rocking time series in horizontal and vertical directions utilizing a Hilbert based method from statistical physics. Our method gives a way to construct an analytic signal on the two-dimensional plane from a one-dimensional time series. The analytic signal share the complete property of the original time series. From the analytic signal of a time series, we have found some information of the original time series which are often hidden from the view of the conventional methods. The analytic signals of interest usually evolve very smoothly on the complex plane. In addition, the phase of the analytic signal is usually moves linearly in time. From the auto-correlation and cross-correlation functions of the original signals as well as the instantaneous amplitudes and phase increments of the analytic signals we have found that the ship-rocking in horizontal direction drives the ship-rocking in vertical direction when the ship navigates freely. And when the ship keeps a fixed navigation direction such relation disappears. Based on these resultswe could predict certain amount of future values of the ship-rocking time series based on the current and the previous values. Our predictions are as accurate as the conventional methods from stochastic processes and provide a much wider prediction time range.

Abstract:From the viewpoint of equivalent sources, the ferromagnetic hull of naval vessels is regarded as a magnetic charge layer, and a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind relating the layer with the measurements of magnetic field sensors is developed. After the discretization of the integral equation, a system of linear equations is obtained which is solved by generalized inverse matrix, and the condition number is employed to assess whether the system is ill-posed. Then the field caused by the hull at an arbitrary point in the space is predicted by the calculated layer. A numerical simulation shows that our method can precisely identify the magnetization to predict the field. And finally a ship model is used to verify the method.
Uncertain Effect of Ship's Radiate Noise of Sonar Detecting Range

Abstract:In order to research the affection of ship's radiate noise on sonar detecting range, this paper simulates the ship's velocity by Monte Carlo method. By experience formula to calculate ship's radiate noise, and make statistics analyze, it derives its probability distributing histogram, and then, a passivity sonar detecting range probability distributes histogram. Comparing it with the method of classic sonar detecting range prediction, this method gives a variable but not a certain value. It provides some basis of sonar detect range prediction for commanders with quantitative messages. And based on these, it derives that the standard variance of ship's velocity and the same of sonar detect range are linear increased.
Modeling and Measurements of Alternating Magnetic Signatures of Ships

Abstract:The alternating electric and magnetic fields are new contributors to the global electromagnetic silencing of ships. Thus, modeling and measurements of alternating magnetic signatures should be a research priority in maritime engineering. In this paper, an alternating horizontal electric dipole is adopted to model the electromagnetic fields related with corrosion. Formulas for alternating magnetic fields generated in shallow sea by horizontal electric dipole are derived based on an air-sea-seabed three-layered model and a numerical computer is also applied. In addition, the alternating magnetic fields of a ship are measured using a tri-axis fluxgate magnetometer fixed in a swaying platform. The characteristics of these fields are analyzed. Finally, the equivalent dipole moment of the trial ship is predicted by contrasting the model results and the observed data.

Abstract:Lateral waves (LW) excited by submerged magnetic dipoles near the sea surface are important for underwater magnetic induction communication and sensing. Existing approximation formulas are only suitable for far-field regions and accurate only when the source and field points are placed at the same depth. In this letter, a novel approximation formula of the LW excited by submerged magnetic dipoles is proposed by adopting the asymptotic expansion method. Numerical results show that the proposed formula is applicable to any frequency up to 100 MHz for both near and far fields in an underwater environment of dynamic conductivity. Moreover, it is accurate when the source and field points are placed at both the same depth and different depths. The proposed formula can serve as a valuable tool to accurately design and analyze underwater magnetic induction communication.

Abstract:In order to study the simulation ability of a solenoid on a ship magnetic field, a new composite model based on a double row magnetic dipole array model with an ellipsoid was designed. The time-domain characteristics, such as magnetic field characteristics, magnetic inclination cosine, magnetic field scalar gradient, and magnetic field spatial distribution characteristics, were extracted. It was verified that the model can accurately simulate the magnetic field characteristics of ships through ship model experiments and simulation analysis. To further quantitatively and accurately analyze the simulation ability of the composite model for ship magnetic fields, a dynamic time wrapping measurement method based on one-dimensional time series was adopted to calculate the similarity of four characteristic quantities: magnetic field vector, magnetic field modulus, magnetic inclination cosine, and magnetic field scalar gradient. The results showed that the composite model has high simulation ability for ship magnetic fields.

A new method for predicting the induced magnetic field of naval vessels

Abstract:A method based on magnetization is proposed to predict the induced magnetic field of naval vessels. We first deduce a formula to calculate the magnetic field in the internal region of magnetized objects from the viewpoint of magnetization, and then use the formula to define the point-function demagnetizing tensor and prove some properties of the tensor. Finally we use this formula to develop a new method to predict the induced magnetic field of naval vessels in a nonuniform applied field, and we call it the Magnetization Method, in which the point-function demagnetizing tensor is used. Compared with traditional methods, the magnetization method features low computational cost, high precision and manifest physical meaning. A numerical simulation of ship model verifies the method. © Chin.Phys.Soc.

Abstract:The paper addresses the innovative issue of minimizing the ship's magnetic signature under any external field conditions, i.e., for arbitrary values of ambient field modulus and magnetic inclination. Varying values of the external field, depending on the current geographical location, affect only the induced part of ship's magnetization. A practical problem in minimizing the ship signature is separating permanent magnetization from induced magnetization. When the ship position changes, a signature measurement has to be made under new magnetic field conditions to update the currents in the coils. This is impractical or even difficult to do (due to the need for a measuring ground), so there is a need to predict the ship's magnetization value in arbitrary geographical location conditions based on the reference signature determined on the measuring ground. In particular, the model predicting the signatures at a new geographical location must be able to separate the two types of magnetization, as permanent magnetization is independent of external conditions. In this paper, a FEM model of the vessel is first embedded in an external field and permanent magnetization is simulated using DC coils placed inside the model. Then, using the previously developed rules for data acquisition and determination of model parameters, a multi-dipole model is synthesized in which the induced and permanent parts are separated. The multi-dipole model thus developed has been successfully confronted with the initial model in FEM environment. The separation of permanent and induced magnetization allows the latter to be scaled according to new values of the external field. In the paper, the situation of determining a signature at one geographical position and its projection onto two other positions is analyzed. Having determined the signature with a high degree of accuracy anywhere in the world, it is possible to perform classical signature minimization by determining DC currents in coils placed inside the ship's hull. The paper also analyzes the effectiveness of ship's signature minimization and the influence of ship's course on the signature value. The advantage of the method presented in this paper is an integrated approach to the issue of scaling and minimization of ship magnetic signature, which has not been presented in the literature on such a scale before.

Abstract:Moving seawater through geomagnetic field can evoke a distribution of weak electric currents in the medium, which may generate a measurable magnetic field. The velocity vector of moving seawater can be resolved by using the ship wave theory, and the induced magnetic field can be evaluated by solving the Maxwell equations. Simulation results show that the induced magnetic field by the wake of a typical cruising vessel is on the order of a few hundred pico-Tesla near the sea surface.

Abstract:Ship target detection and recognition have great application value for military use. However, developing such a system is always challenging, and one main reason is the lack of data. Ship's physical fields, e.g., Sound filed, magnetic field and hydraulic pressure field, contain discriminative information, and we need lots of data of ship physical field signals to learn an effective classifier. In this paper, we are going to develop models and simulations for three kinds of ship physical fields such as sound filed, magnetic field and hydraulic pressure field. The proposed system can not only simulate independently, but also accomplish the physical fields of ships at the time and point. The system could also display real time simulation graphics automatically.
The large amplitude ship rolling and capsize under irregular wave excitation

Abstract:The large amplitude rolling is one of the main reasons leading to ship capsize, it is also a very complicated nonlinear problem. By analyzing nonlinear rolling motion of ship, the nonlinear differential equation of ship rolling motion has been established. The real waves are regarded as the outputs of the white noise by a filter which is introduced into the system. Under the theory of Markov process, the four-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation in time domain was solved by using the path integration method and the transition probability density of the ship rolling movement was obtained. The evolution process of ship capsize probability distribution with the time was achieved by using first passage theory. The results obtained are compared with the corresponding model tests results. It shows satisfactory. The results show that the path integration method is available to predict the distribution of the first passage time and provides valuable reference to the ship design and the safe standards.

Abstract:Numerical analysis of acoustic characters in near field and self-noise of ship is studied by using structural FEM software NASTRAN and acoustic BEM software SYSNOISE. First, the vibration response characters are computed based on the 3-D FE model of ship, then taken the vibration characters of the ship as boundary conditions, a 3-D acoustic BE model is constructed and the influence of point sound source is also taken into account. At last the acoustic characters of the ship in near field are calculated by using indirect BEM. The computed results are compared with the experimental results, and it shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Machinery health monitoring is a key step in the implementation of Condition-based Maintenance in industry. In this procedure, a quantitative description of machine health condition is necessary for maintenance decision-making. In this paper, we applied singularity analysis with wavelet for data processing and a new concept, Lipschitz exponent function, was proposed based on wavelet transform. A kurtosis based health index was defined, which can be used for maintenance decision-making. The proposed method was validated with two sets of gearbox vibration data in comparison with three other indexes. The results show that kurtosis based health index demonstrates excellent performance.

Abstract:Accurate modeling of ship performance is crucial for the shipping industry to optimize fuel consumption and subsequently reduce emissions. However, predicting the speed-power relation in real-world conditions remains a challenge. In this study, we used in-service monitoring data from multiple vessels with different hull shapes to compare the accuracy of data-driven machine learning (ML) algorithms to traditional methods for assessing ship performance. Our analysis consists of two main parts: (1) a comparison of sea trial curves with calm-water curves fitted on operational data, and (2) a benchmark of multiple added wave resistance theories with an ML-based approach. Our results showed that a simple neural network outperformed established semi-empirical formulas following first principles. The neural network only required operational data as input, while the traditional methods required extensive ship particulars that are often unavailable. These findings suggest that data-driven algorithms may be more effective for predicting ship performance in practical applications.

Abstract:The presence of complex electromagnetic noise in the ocean significantly impacts the accuracy of ship shaft-rate electric field signal detection, necessitating the development of an effective denoising method to enhance detection precision. Nevertheless, traditional denoising methods encounter issues like low frequency resolution, challenging threshold configuration, and mode mixing. This study introduces a method that integrates variational mode decomposition (VMD) with multi-window spectral subtraction (MSS). The intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) of noisy signals are extracted using VMD, and the noise components within different IMFs are identified. The spectral features of both signal and noise within different IMFs are leveraged to eliminate noise signals via MSS. Subsequently, the denoised components of IMFs are rearranged to derive the denoised ship shaft-rate electric field signals, achieving noise reduction across various frequency bands. Following validation using simulation signals and empirical data, the noise reduction efficacy of VMD-MSS surpasses that of alternative methods, demonstrating robust performance even at low signal-to-noise ratios. The marine electromagnetic noise is effectively suppressed in the empirical data, while preserving the characteristics of ship's shaft-rate signals, thereby validating the method's efficacy and demonstrating its practical engineering value.

Abstract:A new meshless analysis method is proposed using Daubechies wavelet scaling function to approximate the field function of ship structure.Firstly,Daubechies wavelet with compact support and orthogonality feature is chosen as the basis function,and using the wavelet scaling function with the tensor product form, the approximate expression of the two-dimensional ship structure is constructed and the complexity of solving problem is reduced.And then,by the incremental method, the field function of the two-dimensional ship structure is solved iteratively with the meshless field function of Daubechies wavelet.Finally,typical examples of ship structures are selected,and the calculation results are compared with those of the finite element method (FEM)to verify the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:The unsteady flow around a ship advancing at a constant speed was studied in time domain by using a higher-order boundary element method. The Rankine source was employed. The ship hull and free surface were discretized into 8-node isoparametric elements. A modified Green formula was used to overcome the numerical difficulty arising from singular or quasi-singular integral equation. In the case of τ>0.25, a rigid wall condition was applied to the upstream and a numerical beach was applied to the downstream to absorb the outgoing waves. The numerical results are satisfactory compared with the experimental results.

Abstract:The fundamental problem of determining the free-surface potential flow that corresponds to a given flow at a ship hull surface is reconsidered. Stokes’ theorem is used to transform the dipole distribution over the ship hull surface in the classical boundary-integral representation of the velocity potential. This Stokes’ transformation yields a weakly-singular boundary-integral representation that defines the potential in terms of the Green function G and related functions that are no more singular than G. Accordingly, the velocity representation only involves functions that are no more singular than ∇G.
