Analysis and Evaluation of Benefits from Comprehensive Regulation of Zhangjiabang River Channel in Shanghai City

Abstract:According to the monitoring data of water quality in 1997 from the environmental monitoring center of Shanghai City and the observed data by the authors in 2003, a benefit analysis and comprehensive evaluation is performed of the regulation project of Zhangjiabang river by use of the physical-chemical index evaluation method and the biological diversity index evaluation method for water bodies. It is concluded that the implementation of the project promotes the biological benign cycle of the water body, increases the species and quantities of aquatic organisms, obviously improves the quality of water environment, gradually rehabilitates the ecological system of the water body, and accelerates the development of real estate along the river. Therefore, the project generates great environmental, social, and economic benefits. In consideration of some problems existing, some suggestions are made, such as the collection and disposal of wastewater, along-bank virescence, and creation of atmosphere for social participation.
