Abstract:The performance of routing protocols in Mobile Ad hoc network (MANET) always attracts many attentions. As many previous works have shown, routing performance is greatly dependent to the availability and stability of wireless links. Although there are some studies reported to evaluate the performance of routing protocols in MANET, little work is done for the system overall performance, which is generally referred to as the network throughput and the end-to-end delay. This paper evaluates the routing strategies of the three routing protocols (AODV, OLSR and SRMP) and compares their performance under two different mobility models. We study those protocols under varying metrics such as node mobility and network size. Our objective is to provide a qualitative assessment of overall performance of the routing strategies in different mobility model. The results illustrate that the routing strategies behind the three protocols affect their performance deeply. Meanwhile, different from previous results in the literature, the result shows that it is the combination of routing strategies behind the routing protocols to determine the performance in given scenarios.

Abstract:Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) consists of mobile nodes interconnected by multihop communication paths can experience higher packets loss rate and lower bandwidth compare with wired network because of node mobility and characteristic of wireless channel. Multicast could prove to be an efficient way of providing necessary services for many kinds of applications. In this paper, we consider the performances of different scheduling algorithms in MANET which have both multicast and unicast applications. Here we discuss four scheduling models; that are one-queue model, priority-queue model, dynamic priority-queue model and adaptive queue-model. In these algorithms, we compare the difference between multicast and unicast application performance. In addition we analyze the impact of quality of service (QoS) parameters on hop-by-hop and end-to-end performance. These show that the scheduling algorithms, which we analyzed, have much better hop-by-hop and end-to-end traffic performance than simple scheduling.

At preset.the research on routing protocols is one of the hot topics. This paper reviews its situation and main difficulties. A detailed description and comparison of ad hoc multicast routing protocols are provided. The flooding protocol and the relation between unicast protocols and multicast protocols are also presented. Finally the future research directions are introduced.

Abstract:The lack of fundamental understanding of real achievable multicast delay performance in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) severely hampers the broad potential applications of such networks. The paper studies the real achievable multicast delay performance in MANETs under a general two hop relay routing with packet replication (THR-(f, g) for short), where f represents the number of replicated packets, and grepresents the number of destination nodes each source node is associated with. Under the THR-(f, g) routing, each packet at source node is delivered to at most f distinct relay nodes, and each of the g destination nodes will receive the packet from either one of the relay nodes or the source node. To study the multicast delay performance, we develop a Markov chain based theoretical model to characterize the packet delivery process under the THR-(f, g) routing, based on which the analytical expression on mean value of multicast delay is further derived. Extensive simulations and numerical results are presented to validate the accuracy of the theoretical model in multicast delay analysis and to explore the impact of network parameters on the multicast delay performance of the THR-(f, g) routing, respectively.

Abstract:With the rapid progress of multicast applications and more users participating in it, IP multicast has been an important subject in both research and development. In the meantime, due to the rapid promulgation of mobile devices and progress in wireless technology these years, it is imperative to determine the best way to provide services to mobile equipment. Because IP multicast naturally has the merit of high scalability and efficiency, which is more significant for mobile environment whose resource is much limited, more and more people pay attention to these two techniques, and many efforts are being made to bring them together. In this paper, a comprehensive survey on mobile multicast arithmetics and schemes is given, the advantages and application range of these arithmetics or schemes are discussed respectively, also the shortcomings and problems existed are anatomized in depth, and then a comprehensive comparison is given. In view of poor reliability in mobile environment, a detailed investigation of new problems when implementing reliable multicast to mobile hosts is given, and some related works are introduced. It was hoped that the illustration and discussion presented here would be helpful for developers in selecting an appropriate mobile multicast arithmetic or protocol for their specific needs. In the end, the future trend of combining multicast and mobile is discussed.

Abstract:Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) are self-organizing, dynamic topology networks formed by a collection of mobile nodes through radio. The wireless networking environment presents formidable challenges to the study of multicast problems, especially in terms of connection maintenance mechanism and power consumption. This paper focuses on these problems, and proposes an efficient routing protocol called power-efficient preferred link-based algorithm (PPL). The performance metric used to evaluate is energy-efficient and connection maintenance. The result shows that our algorithm performs better than other algorithm in energy-efficient and connection maintenance.

Abstract:Due to the dynamic nature of the network topology and restricted resources, quality of service (QoS) and multicasting routing in mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a challenging task. Hence, the nodes are mobile, the network topology changes rapidly and unpredictably over time. The on demand multicast routing protocol (ODMRP), designed for mobile ad hoc networks, offers quick adaptation to dynamic link conditions, low processing and memory overhead, and low network utilization. This paper proposes a reliability of the ad hoc network on demand multicast routing protocol (RODMRP) in terms of the delivery of data packets. RODMRP supports a reliable multicasting suitable for mobile ad hoc network by reducing the number of route reconstructions and packet retransmissions. Simulation results show that the RODMRP has high packet delivery ratio and low end-to-end for packet delivery.

Abstract:Due to the high mobility of nodes and highly dynamic topology, performing efficient and robust multicast in a Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is a challenging task. Most of existing multicast protocols in MANETs discover the routing path by flooding message over the whole network, which result in considerable cost for routing discovery and maintenance. Moreover, the reliability of the discovered path can not be guaranteed, since the stabilities of nodes along such path are unpredictable. This paper presents the Reliable Backbone based Multicast Routing (RBMR) protocol for MANETs. RBMR employs a mobility prediction based election process to construct a reliable backbone structure performing packet transmission, message flooding, routing discovery and maintenance. Other existing multicast protocols for MANETs can also take great advantage of RBMR to alleviate the influence of nodes mobility and perform efficient data transmission. Simulation results show that such protocol achieves good performance in terms of packet delivery ratio, forwarding efficiency and normalized overhead even in the high speed scenario.

Abstract:Because of its relative simplicity and low overhead, overlay multicasting for MANET has been widely explored all over the world. By now, many overlay multicast protocols for MANET have been proposed. But most of these protocols aim only at improving the efficiency and ignore the dynamic and unreliable nature of MANET. Their performance usually degrades when these protocols are put into practice. In this paper, we propose a new overlay multicasting protocol, AREMP. In our protocol, we take full consideration of the dynamic nature of the network and try to improve both the reliability and the efficiency. Our simulation shows that our protocol can get a good balance between reliability and efficiency.

Abstract:The mobile ad hoc network (MANET) has recently been recognized as an attractive network architecture for wireless communication. Reliable broadcast is an important operation in MANET (e.g., giving orders, searching routes, and notifying important signals). However, using a naive flooding to achieve reliable broadcasting may be very costly, causing a lot of contention, collision, and congestion, to which we refer as the broadcast storm problem. This paper proposes an efficient reliable broadcasting protocol by taking care of the potential broadcast storm problem that could occur in the medium-access level. Existing protocols are either unreliable, or reliable but based on a too costly approach. Our protocol differs from existing protocols by adopting a low-cost broadcast, which does not guarantee reliability, as a basic operation. The reliability is ensured by additional acknowledgement and handshaking. Simulation results do justify the efficiency of the proposed protocol.

Abstract:Cooperative multicast serves as an efficient communication paradigm for supporting multicast-intensive applications in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Available studies on cooperative multicast in MANETs mainly focus on either the full cooperation or the noncooperation, which fail to capture the more general cooperation behaviors among destination nodes. To address this issue, this paper proposes a general cooperative multicast scheme CM(f, g, p, tau) with replication factor f, multicast fanout g, cooperative probability p, and packet lifetime t. With this scheme, a packet from source node will be replicated to at most f distinct relay nodes, which forward the packet to its g destination nodes, and with probability p a destination node helps to forward the packet. Here, the packet has the lifetime of t time slots. The scheme is flexible and general, and it covers the full cooperation (p = 1) and the noncooperation (p = 0) as special cases. AMarkov chain theoretical model is further developed to depict the packet delivery process under the new scheme and help us to conduct analytical study on the corresponding expected packet delivery probability and packet delivery cost. Finally, extensive simulation and numerical results are provided for discussions.

Abstract:Two types of basic reliable multicast transport protocol (based on ACK and NAK) are presented. Qualitative analysis of these two basic protocols and a modified protocol is given to exhibit their characters in scalability and bandwidth usage on a typical multicast network model. The analysis result shows that the reliable multicast transport protocol based on NAK with NAK compression scheme consumes less bandwidth and exhibits perfect scalability.

Abstract:In mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), one of the critical issues consists of the design of routing algorithms that are robust to frequent path disruptions caused by hosts’ mobility. This paper analyzes random walk mobility model, and establishes the relationship between a link’s reliability and current lifetime via a conditional probability model. A path reliable routing algorithm is also developed, in which the proposed analytical model is employed. Simulation results show very good agreement to the analytical model, and indicate the benefits of the proposed routing protocol in terms of increasing path duration and packet delivery ratio, as well as reducing packet end-to-end delay.

Abstract:Anycast-Routing protocol and the significance of its application in mobile Ad hoc networks are briefly described first.Then,the network performances of anycast-routing and unicast-routing are discussed,and the relationships between mean packet hop count,mean message packet delay and average network connectivity are also compared.On this basis,an AAODV routing protocol for mobile Ad hoc networks is presented,and its functions are described in detail.An analysis for the parameters of network performance,such as routing optimality,packet delivery-ratio and overhead of different topologies is made by comparison.Finally,a sound simulation with NS2 built on the platform of linux system system has been done to show the performance of AAODV.

Abstract:The widespread use of mobile and handheld devices is likely to popularize ad hoc networks, which do not require any wired infrastructure for intercommunication. The nodes of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) operate as end hosts as well as routers. They intercommunicate through single-hop and multi-hop paths in a peer-to-peer fashion. Most applications of MANETs require efficient support for multicast communications in which a node can communicate with multiple other nodes exploiting the broadcast nature of wireless channels. In this chapter, we first provide a classification approach of the mulitcasting techniques in mobile ad hoc networks, followed by the description of the protocols. Overarching issues such as energy efficiency, reliability, quality of service, and security have been also addressed. Several intriguing issues have been identified for further investigation on this topic.
