Abstract:Nanomaterials filled polymers system is a simple method to produce organic/inorganic hybrid with synergistic or complementary effects. The properties of nanocomposites strongly depend on the dispersion effects of nanomaterials in the polymer and their interfaces. The optimized interface of nanocomposites would decrease the barrier height between filler and polymer for charge transfer. To avoid aggregation of metal nanoparticles and improve interfacial charge transfer, Pt nanodots filled in the non-conjugated polymer was synthesized with an in situ method. The results exhibited that the absorbance of nanocomposite covered from the visible light region to NIR (near infrared). The photo-current responses to typical visible light and 808 nm NIR were studied based on Au gap electrodes on a flexible substrate. The results showed that the size of Pt nanoparticles was about 1-2 nm and had uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix. The resulting nanocomposite exhibited photo-current switching behavior to weak visible light and NIR. Simultaneously, the nanocomposite also showed electrical switching responses to strain applied to a certain extent. Well-dispersion of Pt nanodots in the polymer is attributable to the in situ synthesis of metal nanodots, and photo-current switching behavior is due to interface optimization to decrease barrier height between metal filler and polymer. It provided a simple way to obtain organic/inorganic hybrid with external stimuli responses and multi-functionalities.

Abstract:Comb-like polyamides bearing different contents of tetraaniline pendant groups were synthesized via nucleophilic polymerization coupled with a post-functionalization method, and exhibit excellent solubility, good thermal stability and interesting spectroscopic properties. Their electronic properties, including conductivity, dielectricity, electroactivity, electrochromism and anticorrosion, were effectively adjusted and controlled by importing different numbers of tetraaniline pendant groups.

Abstract:Research on the application of metal nitrides in catalysis and adsorption of pollutants in water is gaining increasing attention. The M-N X bond is usually formed between metal and nitrogen in metal nitrides, in which covalent, ionic, and metallic bonds constitute the predominant bonds which to a larger degree influence the properties of metal nitrides, especially the bond between transition metal and nitrogen atom changes the coefficient of metal lattice. Adjusting the d-band within the metals, can improve the material properties such as electrical conductivity, chemical stability, electrocatalytic performance and mechanical stability. In this review, we sought to systematically introduce the synthesis of metal nitride, the different classes from the point of source. We also analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of various synthesis methods and their application in capacitive deionization (CDI) and electrocatalysis. Finally, we have also shed light on the modification of metal nitrides and how each modification influences the material mechanism.

Abstract:In recent years, nanoscale metal-organic coordination polymers have attracted more and more attention because of their specific properties in gas sorption, sensors, contrast agents, drug delivery, templates and so on. Carboxylate compounds are a large family of O-donor ligands and are studied widely because such ligands can be designed with various structures and can also form strong bonds with metal centers. Until now, many nanoscale metal-organic coordination polymers with carboxylate-containing ligands have been reported. The purpose of this tutorial highlight is to present recent advances in the syntheses of nanoscale metal-carboxylate coordination polymers and illustrate the potential application of this new class of nanomaterials in different areas.

Abstract:Adsorption capacities and characteristics of heavy metal adsorbents have been investigated thoroughly, but the essential functional groups to bind heavy metal pollutants in composites have not been identified and confirmed separately. Previous researches reported that –OH, –NH2, –CONH2 or their protonation had binding effects to heavy metals. However, these descriptions were all based on the complex composites. The composites were consisted of different functional groups. Thus, this article aims to evaluate and discuss (1) the adsorption properties of different functional groups containing N or O atoms, (2) the protonation of groups containing N atoms, (3) the basis properties of adsorbents related to adsorption, (4) the physical adsorption by network structure. By a series of single evaluations, the results showed that the hydrophobic ester group (R1-COO-R2), non-ionic groups, including –OH, –NH2, –CONH2, ether (C–O–C), CO, tertiary amine (R3N), and protonation of –NH2 and R3N, had no interaction with metals. Only negative groups, such as -COO-, –SO3-, could adsorb cationic heavy metals. And positive –N(CH3)3+ group could bind with Cr2O72−. Furthermore, these conclusions have been verified by the law of electric neutrality in the heavy metal solutions and solid adsorbents. This study determined that the combining process between negative functional groups and cationic metals, or between positive groups and anionic metals, can be applied to decrease the heavy metal concentration.

Abstract:Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-maleic acid-co-1-vinylimidazole), (NIPAM-MA-VI), has been prepared in water by free radical polymerization. The aqueous solution of low-molecular-weight P(NIPANI-MA-VI) has four distinct phases above a critical concentration. Effects of monomer ratio, copolymer concentration, and pH on the phase transition temperatures of P(NIPAM-MA-VI) were studied. The addition of divalent metal ions promoted the gelation process of P(NIPAM-MA-VI). Therefore, the adsorption behavior of P(NIPAM-MA-VI) to Cu2+ ions was further investigated; this adsorption behavior was pH-dependent, and the adsorption isotherm could be well fitted by the Freundlich model. The maximum adsorption capacity reaches 21.1 mg g(-1) dried copolymer at 60 degrees C and pH S. The adsorbed P(NIPAM-MA-VI) can be regenerated by the treatment of hydrochloric acid and reused in the following adsorption process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and synchrotron radiation small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) were used to investigate the effect of Cu2+ ions on the phase transition behavior of P(NIPAM-MA-VI). O is and N is XPS spectra and SAXS results analyzed by the Ornstein-Zernike and generalized Ornstein-Zemike models are in agreement with the proposed mechanisms and adsorption behavior. As a thermo-, pH-, and metal ion-responsive copolymer, P(NIPAM-MA-VI) could be used for the ion recognition, water purification, and enrichment of heavy metal ions.
Metal ion binding by pyridylethyl-containing polymers: experimental and theoretical study.

Abstract:Binding of Cu(2+), Ni(2+) and Ag(+) ions to polyallylamine (PAA), polyethylenimine (PEI), poly(N-2-(2-pyridyl)ethylallylamine) (PEPAA), poly(N-2-(2-pyridyl)ethylethylenimine) (PEPEI), and N-2-(2-pyridyl)ethylchitosan (PEC) has been investigated using batch sorption experiments, spectrophotometric titration, ESR, and XPS to elucidate how the structure of polymer precursors affects the ion binding efficiency of their pyridylethylated derivatives. It has been shown that pyridylethylation increases the sorption capacities of PAA and PEI cross-linked with epichlorohydrin toward Ag(+) and Ni(2+) ions, but does not improve or decrease that toward Cu(2+) ions. PEC was the most efficient material for Ag(+) ion sorption with the sorption capacity of 1.21 mmol g(-1). The highest sorption capacity for Ni(2+) (0.62 mmol g(-1)) was found for PEPEI. According to density functional theory (DFT) calculations, lower Cu(2+) binding efficiency to PEPEI results from the "looser" structure of this complex in comparison with unmodified PEI. DFT calculations have also suggested that the Cu(2+) ion is four-coordinated in the complexes with PEPAA and PAA and five-coordinated in all other complexes, which have the structures of distorted square pyramids with Cu-N bond lengths varying significantly depending on the ligand nature. The results of the theoretical investigations of the Cu(2+) complex structures were supported by the ESR data, which revealed the decrease of A‖ and the increase of g‖ values with increasing deviation from the square planar geometry of complexes in the ligands in the order PEI < PEPEI < PEPAA.

Abstract:Porous polymer gels (PPGs) are characterized by inherent porosity, a predictable structure, and tunable functionality, which makes them promising for the heavy metal ion trap in environmental remediation. However, their real-world application is obstructed by the balance between performance and economy in material preparation. Development of an efficient and cost-effective approach to produce PPGs with task-specific functionality remains a significant challenge. Here, a two-step strategy to fabricate amine-enriched PPGs, NUT-21-TETA (NUT means Nanjing Tech University, TETA indicates triethylenetetramine), is reported for the first time. The NUT-21-TETA was synthesized through a simple nucleophilic substitution using two readily available and low-cost monomers, mesitylene and α, α'-dichloro-p-xylene, followed by the successful post-synthetic amine functionalization. The obtained NUT-21-TETA demonstrates an extremely high Pb2+ capacity from aqueous solution. The maximum Pb2+ capacity, qm, assessed by the Langmuir model was as high as 1211 mg/g, which is much higher than most benchmark adsorbents including ZIF-8 (1120 mg/g), FGO (842 mg/g), 732-CR resin (397 mg/g), Zeolite 13X (541 mg/g), and AC (58 mg/g). The NUT-21-TETA can be regenerated easily and recycled five times without a noticeable decrease of adsorption capacity. The excellent Pb2+ uptake and perfect reusability, in combination with a low synthesis cost, gives the NUT-21-TETA a strong potential for heavy metal ion removal.

Abstract:In the researches of polyaniline (PANI) or PANI-based adsorbents, views on which nitrogen group has the highest chemical affinity to heavy metal ions and dominates the adsorption process remain in debate. To address this problem, the interaction between different nitrogen groups and heavy metal ions was deciphered exactly via density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiments. Theoretical calculations reveal that N group, rather than other nitrogen groups within PANI, serves as the primary adsorption site. And the key step of PANI adsorption process is a ligand exchange reaction. In addition, H+ ions with a higher affinity to N group can inhibit the adsorption of metal ions through the consumption of adsorption sites and ion exchange reaction. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) spectra demonstrate that maintaining a reasonably high pH value (pH > 4) proven to be an effective strategy for mitigating H+ competition. This work provides a molecular-level understanding of PANI’s adsorption sites, underlying mechanism, and H+ competition for metal ion adsorption by PANI, which is beneficial for advancing the development of PANI-based adsorbents.

Effects of Imino Groups on the Electrochemical Properties of Transition Metal Complexes Polymer with Schiff Base

Abstract:Schiff base monomer Ni (salen) and Ni (salphen) with different imino groups were chemical syn-thetized and formulated as a solution with the concentration of 1 mmol/L. Poly[Ni(salen)] and poly[Ni(salphen)] were electrodeposited on the prepared MWCNTs electrode through cyclic voltammetry on electrochemical workstation. Surface morphologies of poly [Ni (salen)] and poly [Ni (salphen)] electrodes were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and electrochemical properties were test by cyclic voltammetry,chronoamperometry, galvanostatic charge/discharge methods. The results show that poly[Ni(salen)] nano-belts are electrodeposited upon MWCNTs, and the poly[Ni(salphen)] are adhesively grown on nanotubes. The charge diffusion coefficients of transition metal complexes polymer poly [Ni (salen)] and poly [Ni (salphen)] electrodes are 1.23×10-8 cm2/s, 1.86×10-9 cm2/s, respectively. The specific capacitances of poly [Ni (salen)] and poly[Ni(salphen)] are 66.6 F/g、106.3 F/g at a current density of 0.05 mA/cm2, respectively. The capacitance and electrochemical properties of transition metal complexes polymer with tetradentate N2O2 Schiff-base ligand poly[Ni(salphen)] is better than that of poly[Ni(salen)].

Abstract:The backbones of polymers are generally composed of non-metal elements such as C,N,O and Si.Here we propose and synthesize a new class of polymers whose backbones are completely made from metal atoms connected by chemical bonds,and they are thus named metal-backboned polymers.As a demonstration,nickel is selected as the metal to construct the nickel-backboned polymers with varied lengths,which are verified by mass spectrometry and studied by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy.These metal-bonded polymers open up a new avenue to develop functional polymers in the future.

Abstract:This review article summarizes the methods for improving mechanical properties of nitramine-based composite solid propellants.It has been considered that the use of bonding agents is an economic,effective and convenient way to enhance the mechanical properties of the solid propellants.The bonding mechanism and characteristics of bonding agents are analyzed.The overview on the types and development of bonding agents for composite solid propellants containing nitramine has been presented as well.It has been shown that the multifunctional polymer bonding agent is a research direction of bonding agents.According to the surface characteristics of nitramine fillers and the structure characteristics of different adhesive,a universal bonding agent suitable for different adhesive-nitramine systems should be prepared by molecular design.Some suggestions are put forward for the design of universal bonding agents.
Open Linear Polymer Host-Guest Interactions Sensed by Luminescent Silver Nanodots

Abstract:The selectivity of the linear polymer chain toward its binding moieties has been considered negligible; thus, a clear demonstration showing the best-fit binding of a linear polymer to its guest counterpart is still unknown. Luminescent poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-stabilized silver nanodots (PAA-AgNDs) have been applied as a turn-on sensor to monitor the interaction between the PAA chain and its binding cations. The binding of cations ions to the PAA chain may cross-link the linear PAA chain via coordination with carboxylate, which increases the rigidity of the polymer chain, retards the nonradiative decay of PAA-AgNDs, and consequently enhances the emission of silver nanodots while inducing a blue-shift of its emission spectrum. For the first time, we have demonstrated that a linear polymer chain can act as an open host to selectively bind to its best-matching cations. Specifically, among Group 2 cations (Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+), calcium ions show the strongest bonding to the PAA polymer chain. Our research suggests that, with extra rigidity, the polymer improves its chemical stability as calcium ions cross-linked the linear polymer. Meanwhile, it has also been demonstrated that luminescent silver nanodots can be excellent probes for the detection of polymer activities with straightforward and simple visualization methods.
The role of available nitrogen in the adsorption of polystyrene nanoplastics on magnetic materials

Abstract:Several studies have been conducted on nanoplastics (NPs). However, few studies have investigated the complexity of the interactions between NPs and other aqueous pollutants in multi-solute media. In this study, the adsorption of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) on magnetic materials (MS) in the presence of available nitrogen (AN) was studied. The results demonstrated that the adsorbed amount of PSNPs increased in the presence of ammonium nitrogen (NH+ 4–N), whereas no significant difference was detected on the adsorbed amount of PSNPs using NO- 3–N as a cosolute. The increase in the adsorbed amount of PSNPs was attributed to the formation of an MS–PSNPs–NH+ 4–N complex. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and zeta potential analyses indicated that the PSNPs with NH+ 4–N as a cosolute can be bound on the MS surfaces. Moreover, the change in the PSNPs amount adsorbed by MS depends on the valence state, electronegativity of the coexisting ions, and the surface properties and functional groups of PSNPs. Additionally, the ionic strength, dissolved organic matter, solution pH, metal cations and the subsequent release of MS-coated PSNPs and NH+ 4–N changed considerably in different aquatic systems and artificial nitrating fluids. Among different natural aquatic systems, the PSNPs adsorption on MS was excellent in lake water. The results indicate high potential for the attachment of PSNPs to MS in the presence of AN and further deepen the understanding of removing NPs using magnetic materials in aqueous systems with various coexisting contaminants.

Development of Nitrogen-Doped Carbon for Selective Metal Ion Capture

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped carbons are promising materials for applications in capacitive deionization, electrosorption and aqueous ion separation, as nitrogen atoms doped into a carbon matrix are active for the selective capture of metal ions. However, much remains unknown about the preferential interaction behavior between metal ions and nitrogen-containing active sites, which retards the development of high-performance capacitive materials for practical applications. Here, we developed two types of nitrogen-doped carbon: pyridinic N-dominated graphene (N-6-G) and pyrrolic N-dominated graphene (N-5-G). The pyridinic-N was found to prefer binding "hard" ions (H+ and Na+), while pyrrolic-N showed enhanced performance in capturing "soft" ions (Pb2+). Compared to pristine reduced graphene oxide, the specific capacitance of N-6-G in Na2SO4 electrolyte increased by 50.0% (239.7 F g(-1)), while an increase of only 22.1% was found for N-5-G (195.2 F g(-1)), which demonstrate the superior capture capacity of pyridinic N toward Na+. However, for the electrosorption of Pb2+ ion, the maximum adsorption capacity per surface area of N-5-G was 2.43 mg m(-2), which is 3.3 times as high as N-6-G (0.73 mg m(-2)). Furthermore, the distribution coefficient (Kd) value of N-5-G is similar to 50 times higher than N-6-G. It is proposed that soft-soft and hard-hard interactions exist between nitrogen-containing groups and metal ions. These findings set a new benchmark for the capture of aqueous metal ions and suggest the great potential of N-doped carbon for challenging toxic metal pollution issues.

Abstract:Quaternary ammonium salt polymers, a kind of polyelectrolyte with a quaternary ammonium group, are widely used in traditional and emerging industries due to their good water-solubility, adjustable cationicity and molecular weight, high efficiency and nontoxicity. In this paper, firstly, the properties and several synthesis methods of typical quaternary ammonium salt monomers were introduced. Secondly, the research progress on the synthesis of polymers was summarized from the perspective of obtaining products with high molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution and high monomer conversion, and special functional polymers. Thirdly, the relationships between the structures and properties of the polymer were analyzed from the perspectives of molecular weight, charge density, structural stability, and microstructural regulation of the polymer chain unit. Fourthly, typical examples of quaternary ammonium salt polymers in the application fields of water treatment, daily chemicals, petroleum exploitation, papermaking, and textile printing and dyeing were listed. Finally, constructive suggestions were put forward on developing quaternary ammonium salt polymers with high molecular weights, strengthening the research on the relationships between the structures and their properties and pinpointing relevant application fields.

Metal‐Backboned Polymers with Well‐Defined Lengths

Abstract:Constructing the backbones of polymers with metal atoms is an attractive strategy to develop new functional polymeric materials, but it has yet to be studied due to synthetic challenges. Here, metal atoms are interconnected as the backbones of polymers to yield metal-backboned polymers (MBPs). Rational design of multidentate ligands synthesized via an efficient iterative approach leads to the successful construction of a series of nickel-backboned polymers (NBPs) with well-defined lengths and up to 21 nickel atoms, whose structures are systematically confirmed. These NBPs exhibit strong and length-depended absorption with narrow band gaps, offering promising applications in optoelectronic devices and semiconductors. We also demonstrate the high thermal stability and solution processsability of such nickel-backboned polymers. Our results represent a new opportunity to design and synthesize a variety of new metal-backboned polymers for promising applications in the future.
Ionized acrylamide-based copolymer / terpolymer hydrogels for recovery of positive and negative heavy metal ions

Abstract:In this study, we explored the effective capture of both cations and anions onto a single adsorbent. Acrylamide (AAm) served as the polymer backbone, onto which co-monomers sodium p-styrenesulfonate (SS) and N,N-dimethylaminopropyl acrylamide (DMAPAA) were grafted, creating ionized polymer hydrogel adsorbents. These adsorbents were engineered for the synergistic separation and recovery of heavy metal cations and anions from concentrated solutions, focusing specifically on industrially significant ions such as Ni2+-, Cu2+, Zn2+ and (Cr2O7)2-. The adsorption and desorption behaviors of the AAm terpolymer hydrogels were investigated across various pH solutions, considering the competition and concentrations of these specific metal ions. Moreover, the study delved into the effects of the internal pH environment within the hydrogel adsorbents, determining its impact on the type of metal adsorbed and the adsorption capacity. Our findings indicated that the adsorption of cations was enhanced with a higher proportion of SS relative to DMAPAA in the hydrogel. In contrast, significant anion capture occurred when the concentration of DMAPAA exceeded that of SS. However, equal ratios of SS and DMAPAA led to a noticeable reduction in the adsorption of both types of substrates, attributed to the counteractive nature of these co-monomers. To enhance the adsorption efficiency, it may be necessary to consider methods for micro-scale separation of the two types of monomers. Additionally, the adsorption capacity was observed to be directly proportional to the swelling capacity of the hydrogels. For complete desorption and separation of the cations and anions from the adsorbent, the application of concentrated NaOH solutions followed by HNO3 was found to be essential. Given the varying concentrations of cation and anion pollutants, often present in heavy metal factory effluents, it is crucial to fine-tune the ratios of DMAPAA and SS during the synthesis process. This adjustment ensures optimized efficiency in the decontamination and recovery of these significant heavy metal ions.

Abstract:The article summarizes the research progress of polymer binders applied in cathodes and anodes of lithium‐ion batteries in recent year. The properties and future prospects of polymer binders are mainly discussed from the structural design and functionality of polymer binders. It is hoped that this paper will create new thinking and research directions for the development of lithium‐ion batteries. Polymeric binders account for only a small part of the electrodes in lithium‐ion batteries, but contribute an important role of adhesion and cohesion in the electrodes during charge/discharge processes to maintain the integrity of the electrode structure. Therefore, polymeric binders have become one of the key materials to improve the charge/discharge properties of lithium‐ion batteries. Qualified polymer binders should not only require good bond strength, mechanical properties, conductivity, chemical functionality and processing performance, but also be environmentally friendly and low cost. The existing commercial polymeric binders cannot meet all the above requirements at the same time. This is a hot research area that researchers are keen to focus on, and it is hoped that through structural design, the matching of functional groups can meet the requirements of high‐capacity lithium‐ion batteries with long cycle life. Focusing on the structural design of polymer binders, the mechanism of interaction with electrode materials, and the functional properties of polymer binders, this review summarizes the polymer binders used in the cathode and anode in recent years. It could expect that this review can inspire a deep consideration on these critical issues, paving new pathways to improve comprehensive performance of polymer binders.

Abstract:We focus on the published results of the interfaces between depositing metals and insulating and semiconducting polymers, and the interfaces between polymer films and metals. They indicated that when metal was deposited on polymer films, diffusion action occurred at the polymer surface and new interfacial states were formed during the process of deposition. Chemical reactions led to good adhesion and good performance of charge transfer between metal and polymer. When polymers were deposited on metal substrate, adsorption to the substrate occurred at the interface.
