Abstract:Based on the morphotropic phase boundary(MPB) compositions of the two subsystems, a series of (1 - x)(0.67 Pb(Mg(1/3)Nb(2/3))O(3)-0.33 PbTiO(3))-x(0.91 Pb(Zn(1/3)Nb(2/3))O(3)-0.09 PbTiO(3)) in the ternary system with different x were studied. Ceramic samples were synthesized by the columbite precursor method. The microstructure, phase states and electrical properties of those samples were investigated as well. X-ray diffraction results demonstrated that all of the samples possess a pure perovskite structure, and lie within the MPB region, which verifies that the MPB region of PMN-PZN-PT ternary system exists along the line connecting the MPB regions of PMN-PT and PZN-PT binary subsystems. The maximum value of dielectric constant (epsilon(m,1) (kHz)=28030), remnant polarization (P(r)=32.5 mu C/cm(2)) and piezoelectric property (d(33)=545 pC/N) were obtained for the composition with x=0.1.

Abstract:Ag1_xKxNbO3(AKNx (x <= 0.12) ceramics were prepared to understand the relationship of structure-properties driven by compositions and temperatures. The results suggested that this binary system possessed a morpho-tropic phase boundary (MPB) consisted of ferrielectric and ferroelectric phases with iso-symmetry at room temperature, in which domains switching together with electric-field-induced irreversible phase transition achieved a much higher electrostrain (Smax= 0.4%) than other compositions. But this MPB was destroyed after poling, leading to inferior piezoelectricity. A phase diagram was drawn after analyzing in situ XRD and dielectric data, where an almost vertical ferrielectric/antiferroelectric <-> polymorphic ferroelectric MPB line starting from a triple point was proposed. As temperature increased, the piezoelectricity significant enhanced near ferroelectric orthorhombic <-> monoclinic phase boundary, while the highest piezoelectricity was achieved near the mono-clinic <-> paraelectric phase boundary with d33 = 200 pC/N. The enhanced piezoelectricity is intimately related to the ferroelectric monoclinic possessing Pm symmetry.

Abstract:A series of Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -Pb(Ni 1/3 Nb 2/3 )-O 3 -PbTiO 3 (PMN-PNN-PT) ceramics with compositions of (1– x )(0.67PMN-0.33PT)- x (0.64PNN-0.36PT) ( x = 0.1–0.9) were synthesized using the columbite precursor method. The phase structures, as well as the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of the ceramics were investigated in detail. X-ray diffraction results demonstrate that all the samples possess a pure perovskite structure. It is found that the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region of the PMN-PNN-PT ternary system is located near the line connecting the MPBs of the PMN-PT and PNN-PT binary systems. A high value of the maximum dielectric constant ( ɛ m = 45540, at 1 kHz), together with a high value of the piezoelectric coefficient ( d 33 = 780 pC/N), were obtained for the composition x = 0.2. The results show that a partial substitution of PNN-PT for PMN-PT can lead to improved electrical properties in this ternary system.

Abstract:High-Curie temperature (T-C) piezoelectric ceramics 0.15Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.38PbHfO(3)-0.47PbTiO(3) (0.15PMN-0.38PH-0.47PT) were fabricated via the citrate method, which shows pure perovskite structure. The ceramics have composition locating at the rhombohedral side around the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), and present enhanced electrical properties as compared with those prepared by the solid-state reaction method via the columbite precursor technique. Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy not only proves the occurrence of the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition around T-C, but also detects the successive phase symmetry transitions, which correlate with the polar nanoregions (PNRs) or the coexistence of multiple ferroelectric phases. Large quantities of fine stripe nanoscale ferroelectric domains are observed by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) in the 0.15PMN-0.38PH-0.47PT ceramics, which form the larger micron island domains. Temperature-dependent Raman spectra and PFM results indicate that the excellent dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of the 0.15PMN-0.38PH-0.47PT ceramics can be attributed to either the existence of the PNRs with low symmetry or the multiple-ferroelectric-phases coexistence around room temperature and the fine stripe ferroelectric domains.

Abstract:The influence of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of PbNi1/3Nb2/3O3-PbZrO3-PbTiO3 (PNN-PZ-PT) ternary system were systematically investigated. The results showed that the piezoelectric constant d31 and plane coupling factor kp reached a maximum in the vicinity of morphotropic phase boundary. The highest value of the piezoelectric constant d31 was 260×10−12 C/N. The Curie temperature Tc decreased rapidly with increasing content of PNN. The lattice parameters a increased and c decreased with increasing PNN content and the Zr/Zr + Ti ratio as a result of the crystal structural transformation from tetragonal to rhombohedral phases.

Abstract:Ceramics of the xPb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3–(1−x−y)Pb(Yb1/2Nb1/2)O3–yPbTiO3 (PZN–PYN–PT) ternary system were synthesized using a modified two-step columbite precursor method which can effectively suppress the pyrochlore phase. A morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region, separating tetragonal and rhombohedral phases in the ternary systems has been determined. The electric properties of the compositions near MPB region were investigated. Dielectric response exhibits relaxor-like characteristics with broad dielectric peaks and dispersive dielectric behavior with respect to frequency and temperature. The phase diagram of the 0.45PZN–(0.55−y)PYN–yPT pseudo-binary system in the composition range of 0.15<y<0.35 was established based on dielectric measurements. The optimal properties were achieved in the MPB composition of 0.52PZN–0.21PYN–0.27PT with piezoelectric coefficient d33, dielectric permittivity ε′, planar electromechanical coupling kp, dielectric loss tanδ, coercive field Ec, remnant polarization Pr, and TC being of 558pC/N, 2065, 62%, 0.2%, 19.88kV/cm, 31.44μC/cm2 and 259.5°C, respectively, showing potential usage in high-temperature electromechanical applications.

Abstract:Ferroelectric ceramics of (1x)(0.8PMN0.2PNN)xPT (x = 0.280.43) were synthesized by the columbite precursor method. Their phase structures as well as the dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results demonstrate that the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) of this system lies in the composition range of x = 0.31–0.37. Examination of the dielectric behavior indicates that the ceramics exhibit high dielectric constants near the MPB compositions. In addition, the piezoelectric properties of the ceramics were found quite well around the MPB. The interrelated mechanism was also discussed.

Abstract:Using composition designing, Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O-3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT) ceramics with compositions around the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) were prepared by the solid-state reaction method via the columbite and wolframite precursor techniques. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement and XRD peaks fitting combined with electrical performance characterization confirm the occurrence of composition-induced ferroelectric phase change, and the sintered PIN-PMN-PT ceramics present the coexistence of rhombohedral and tetragonal ferroelectric phases. Composition exerts great influence on the relative density of the sintered ceramics, and the 0.28Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O-3-0.40Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.32PbTiO(3) (0.28PIN-0.40PMN-0.32PT) ceramics exhibit rather uniform microstructural morphology with high relative density of 94.4%. Dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric performance characterization also confirm the existence of the MPB effects, where the composition having performance maximum presents slight difference, proving that MPB has the composition region. Dielectric response behavior fitting and Raman spectroscopy measurement confirm the PIN-PMN-PT ceramics approach normal ferroelectrics with apparent diffusive transition characteristic and the occurrence of composition-induced ferroelectric phase change.

Abstract:A ternary ferroelectric ceramic system, (1−x−y)Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3–xPb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3–yPbTiO3 (PIN–PZN–PT, x = 0.21, 0.27, 0.36, 0.42), was prepared using a two‐step precursor method. The phase structure, dielectric, piezoelectric, and ferroelectric properties of the ternary ceramics were systematically investigated. A morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) was identified by X‐ray diffraction. The optimum piezoelectric and electromechanical properties were achieved for a composition close to MPB (0.5PIN–0.21PZN–0.29PT), where the piezoelectric coefficient d33, planar electromechanical coupling factor kp, and remnant polarization Pr are 660 pC/N,72%, and 45 μC/cm2, respectively. The Curie temperature TC and rhombohedral to tetragonal phase transition temperature TR−T were also derived by temperature dependence of dielectric measurements. The strongly “bended” MPB in the PIN–PT system was found to be “flattened” after addition of PZN in the PIN–PT–PZN system. The results demonstrate a possibility of growing ferroelectric single crystals with high electromechanical properties and expanded range of application temperature.

Abstract:On the basis of the respective compositions near the morphotropic phase boundary(MPB) region of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3(PMN-PT) and PbZrO3-PbTiO3(PZT),a series of compositions of PMN-PT-PZ pseudo ternary system were selected according to the proposed linear combination rules.The PMN-PT-PZ ceramics were fabricated by the conventional columbite precursor method,and their phase structures,dielectric,piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties were investigated systematically.The obtained results indicated that all the selected PMN-PT-PZ ceramics located in the rhombohedral/tetragonal coexistence MPB region and had excellent electrical properties.The special interest was focused on the composition 0.16PMN-0.44PT-0.4PZ,and optimum comprehensive electrical properties of room temperature dielectric constant εr=2014,piezoelectric constant d33=410 pC·N-1,electromechanical factor kp=0.58,remanant polarization Pr=34.5 μC·cm-2 and coercive field Ec=1.98 kV·cm-1 were observed at this composition.

Abstract:Piezoelectric ceramics with compositions of (1 − x − y)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–yPbTiO3–xPbZrO3 (PMN–PT–PZ), x = 0.025, 0.05, 0.075 and 0.1, close to the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) were systematically investigated as a function of PT content (y). With increasing PT content, the structures of ceramics in every fixed PZ content series experience a gradual transition process from the rhombohedral to the tetragonal phase near the MPB. Electrical properties such as piezoelectric coefficient (d33), electromechanical factor (kp), remnant polarization (Pr) and dielectric constant (εr) in the respective series all exhibit the peak values corresponding to the structural phase transition near the MPB. Investigations on the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant of (0.95−y)PMN–yPT–0.05PZ ceramics show that an increased Curie temperature Tc and rhombohedral/tetragonal phase transition temperature TR–T, as well as relatively high electrical properties, can be obtained in some selected compositions. This indicates that the ternary system deserves further exploration for high-temperature applications, especially for the hot research on promising candidates for high-temperature relaxor-based ferroelectric single crystals.

Abstract:The crystal structures, piezoelectric property, dielectric transition and electric-field-induced changes in the structures and dielectric constant of (0.8−x)PbTiO3–xBiFeO3–0.2BaZrO3 (0.3 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) ceramics near the morphotropic phase boundary have been studied. All the ceramics could be indexed on the base of a tetragonal symmetry. The increasing concentration of BiFeO3 induces a reduction in the c/a ratio, ranged from 1.022 for x = 0.3 to 1.007 for x = 0.4. Accordingly, the piezoelectric coefficient (d33) reaches a maximum value at x = 0.34 (d33, 138 pC/N). A relaxor-type dielectric anomaly could be found for all the ceramics. The temperature of the maximum dielectric constant (T m) at 1 MHz and the degree of the diffuseness for the dielectric anomaly (δ) increase with BiFeO3 concentration, from 544 and 96 K for x = 0.3 to 574 and 154 K for x = 0.4. After poling, the ceramic for x = 0.34 shows an increase in the c/a ratio and an obvious decrease in the dielectric constant.

Abstract:PZN-PNN-PT ferroelectrics ceramics near the morphotropic phase boundary line were synthesized by the columbite precursor method. Their structure, dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated. It reveals that excessive content of PZN may lead to the decrease of perovskite phase, while moderate content improves the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of the ceramics. The cause of this result was also presented. In addition, almost all the specimens are characterized with diffuse phase transition and frequency dispersion.

Abstract:The piezoelectric properties of the high-Curie temperature (high-TC) 0.15Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.38PbHfO3-0.47PbTiO3 (0.15PMN-0.38PH-0.47PT) ceramics prepared by three different methods were compared. The 0.15PMN-0.38PH-0.47PT ceramics synthesized by the partial oxalate route exhibit the optimum properties, in which d33* = 845.3 pm/V, d33 = 456.2 pC/N, Kp = 67.2%, and TC = 291 °C. The nanoscale origin of the high piezoelectric response of the 0.15PMN-0.38PH-0.47PT ceramics was investigated by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) using the ceramics synthesized by the partial oxalate route. Large quantities of fine stripe submicron ferroelectric domains are observed, which form large island domains. In order to give further insights into the piezoelectric properties of the 0.15PMN-0.38PH-0.47PT ceramics from a microscopic point of view, the local poling experiments and local switching spectroscopy piezoresponse force microscopy (SS-PFM) were investigated, from which the local converse piezoelectric coefficient d33*(l) is calculated as 220 pm/V.

Abstract:The phase structure, piezoelectric, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties of (0.80 = x)PMN-0.10PFN-0.10PZ-xPT were investigated systematically. The morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) was confirmed to be 0.30 < x < 0.34. Both MPB compositions of x = 0.32 and x = 0.33 exhibit high piezoelectric coefficients d(33) = 640 pC/N and 580 pC/N, electromechanical couplings k(p) of 0.53 and 0.52, respectively. Of particular importance is that the composition with x = 0.33 was found to process high field-induced piezoelectric strain coefficient d(33)* of 680 pm/V, exhibiting a minimal temperature-dependent behavior, being less than 8% in the temperature range of 25-165 degrees C, which can be further confirmed by d(31), with a variation of less than 9%. The temperature-insensitive d(33)* values can be explained by the counterbalance of the ascending dielectric permittivity and descending polarization with increasing temperature. These features make the PMN-PT based quaternary MPB compositions promising for actuator applications demanding high temperature stability. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:High Curie temperature (TC) xBi(Ni1/2Ti1/2)O3-(1-x)Pb(Zr1/2Ti1/2)O3 (xBNT-(1-x)PZT, BNT-PZT) piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the conventional ceramic processing. The composition-induced morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) and its influences on structure and electrical performance were investigated. The synthesized BNT-PZT ceramics exhibit rather pure perovskite structure, and densified microstructure morphology with uniform elementals distribution in both grains and grain boundaries. With increasing the content of Bi(Ni1/2Ti1/2)O3 (BNT), crystal structure of the BNT-PZT ceramics transform from tetragonal phase to rhombohedral phase, and dielectric response peaks change from narrow shape to very broad shape but all presenting dielectric frequency dispersion. The diffused and relaxation dielectric behavior can be fitted well by the quadratic law, and the Vogel-Fulcher law fitting provides additional information on the relaxation characteristic. The MPB effects are confirmed further by ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties measurements. High-TC combined with excellent piezoelectric performance can be realized in the BNT-PZT system, which presents promising applications in geothermal exploration, aerospace and related elevated temperatures fields.

Abstract:A ceramic ternary system of (1−x−y)Pb(Lu1/2Nb1/2)O3–xPbZrO3–yPbTiO3 (PLuN–PZ–PT) has been prepared by two-step synthetic process and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and electric measurements. A morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region has been delimited in the ternary system at room temperature. With the PLuN content increasing, the morphotropic phase boundary region becomes broad as well as the dielectric peak. The best comprehensive piezoelectric properties were achieved at MPB composition 0.42PLuN–0.1PZ–0.48PT, with the piezoelectric coefficients d33, the Curie temperature Tc, the planar electromechanical coupling factor Kp, and the remnant polarizations Pr being 367pC/N, 360°С, 68% and 35μС/cm2, respectively. The results indicate that the PLuN–PZ–PT ternary ferroelectric material may be a promising candidate for high-power electromechanical transducers that can operate in a large temperature range.

Abstract:Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3–Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 (PMN–PNN–PZN–PT) ceramics with compositions of (1−x)(0.14PZN–0.56PNN–0.30PT)−x(0.528PMN–0.132PNN–0.340PT) (x=0.2,0.4,0.6,0.8) were prepared using the conventional mixed-oxide technique. X-ray diffraction results demonstrate that all the samples lie within the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region in the pure perovskite structure. The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant of the ceramics has been investigated in detail. All samples are characterized by a pronounced diffuse phase transition and weak frequency dispersion, and can no longer be regarded as typical relaxors. Excellent dielectric properties have been obtained for the selected compositions. The εm value of the composition with x=0.8 at 1kHz reaches as high as 36,800, which implies that the quaternary compositions near the MPB merit further study.

Abstract:Phase transitional behavior and electrical properties of (1 − x)Pb(Mg,Ni)1/3Nb2/3O3-xPbTiO3 ceramics (PMNN-PT with Mg/Ni = 1:1, x = 0.20–0.40) across the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) were examined. X-ray diffraction and dielectric measurement reveal that two phases, pseudocubic and tetragonal phases, coexist in the composition range x = 0.30–0.36. The maximum d33 (about 570 pC/N) was observed at the composition x = 0.32–0.34. Dielectric and ferroelectric properties exhibit abnormal high near the MPB. An unusual peak shoulder occurred in the dielectric measurement upon thermal cycling for poled samples. This phenomenon was considered to be associated with the “macro to micro domain” transition and depolarization.

Abstract:xPb(Ni 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -(1-x)Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 (x = 0.12, 0.24, 0.36, 0.42, 0.55 and 0.64) ceramics were prepared using conventional solid-state reaction. The morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) composition region, sintering characteristics and performance parameters of ceramic samples with different PNN compositions were studied. The phase structure, microstructure and electrical properties were characterized in detail. The results show that the Curie temperature ( T C ) of PNN-PZT ceramics decreases from 324 °C to 44 °C while the piezoelectric coefficient ( d 33 ) changes from 43 pC/N to 1170 pC/N with PNN content from 0.12 to 0.64. Interesting phenomena were observed, which can provide useful information for practical applications of PNN-PZT ceramics.
