Abstract:Porphyrins are a class of macrocyclic compounds that contain substituents in the porphyrin ring. Some intermediate metabolites of the metabolism pathways of porphyrins, such as 5-aminolevulinic acid, heme, chlorophyll, and vitamin B12, have many important physiological and metabolic functions and are widely used in the field of medicine, agriculture, food, and industry. Microbial fermentation, when compared with chemical synthesis, is an ideal method to produce porphyrins. This paper focuses on the latest research developments in metabolic engineering and synthetic biology for promoting the abiotic synthesis of high value-added chemicals, such as 5-aminolevulinic acid, heme, chlorophyll, and vitamin B12, based on a systematic introduction of the pathway for in vivo porphyrin biosynthesis and discusses the challenges and possible solutions for further high-efficiency biological porphyrin synthesis.

Abstract:Porphyrinoids are compounds with macrocyclic structures similar to those of porphyrins. They continue to attract the attention of chemists due to their unique structures and properties, such as anion binding, stabilization of metal ions with unusual oxidation states, Mobius aromaticity, construction of interesting supramolecular assemblies, electron transfer, and NIR emission. Significance, nomenclature and classification of porphyrinoids are briefly introduced in this paper. Then recent progress of N-confused porphyrins, expanded porphyrins, and oxoporphyrinogens are highlighted and reviewed. Furthermore, corroles, oxocorrologens, porphycenes, core-modified porphyrins, subporphyrins, calixpyrroles and some other porphyrinoids are also introduced. Researches on porphyrinoids provide the possibilities of interesting properties and relevant applications that might be totally different from normal porphyrin compounds.

Abstract:With macrocyclic tetrapyrrole structures, porphyrins are potentially applicable in various fields including pharmaceuticals, catalysis, and solar cells. By changing the macrocyclic frameworks, a variety of porphyrinoids can be developed to achieve more unique structures and outstanding properties. Based on the introduction of the importance and synthetic approaches for porphyrinoids, this review focused on introducing the related researches in our group on linear oligopyrrins, phlorins, and expanded porphyrins containing N-confused pyrroles. On the basis of the oxidative cyclization of elaborately designed precursors in combination with the activation effect of N-confused pyrroles, metal coordination induced modulation, as well as regioselective reactivity of expanded porphyrins, a series of novel porphyrinoid monomers and dimers have been successfully synthesized in our group, and unique macrocyclic transformation, functionalization and modulation of the properties of the porphyrinoids have been achieved. The results provide approaches for further design and syntheses of porphyrinoids with novel structures and excellent properties.

Abstract:Porphyrins are naturally occurring macrocyclic compounds containing four pyrroles connected through four methine carbons at their alpha-positions. Porphyrins and their derivatives are widely found in biological systems and they engage in many essential processes that sustain living systems, such as enzyme catalysis, oxygen transportation and photosynthesis. The unique biological functions and physiochemical properties of porphyrin and its derivatives have made them interesting candidates in the preparation of functional materials for various applications. The recent progress on the synthesis and application of porphyrin derivatives and particularly the related macromolecular and supramolecular structures, is summarized in this review. Following a brief introduction on porphyrin and its derivatives in nature and on the binding and adsorption studies on porphyrin-related bile pigments such as bilirubin, the strategies for the preparation of porphyrin-based polymers are reviewed, including the covalent polymerization and supramolecular self-assembly of linear polymers based on porphyrin, as well as two- and three-dimensional porphyrin assemblies and frameworks. The applications of porphyrin-based polymers and supramolecular-structures are also covered, which include: artificial enzymes, photo-dynamic therapy, chemical sensors, light-energy harvesting and medical imaging. These versatile functions are a synergetic result of porphyrin and its conjunct polymers: the porphyrin has unique photo-physical properties, and the polymers manifested porphyrin moieties stable and switchable chemical environment. Despite the progress having been made, the great potential as functional materials of porphyrin and its derivatives has not been fully exploited. In the future, tailoring the molecular topology of porphyrins-based polymer is believed to be an effective strategy of obtaining functional materials with controlled self-assembly structure. Constructing higher-ordered structure with supramolecular self-assembled porphyrin derivatives is a promising field, because the hierarchical structure would bring more interesting functions that cannot be realized with single molecules. Combination of porphyrin with other biomolecules is worthwhile to pay attention to. With covalent or supramolecular conjunction of porphyrin and biomolecules, functional materials with novel properties that even do not exist in nature might be created.

Abstract:Porphyrin-based chemistry has reached an unprecedented period of rapid development after decades of study. Due to attractive multifunctional properties, porphyrins and their analogues have emerged as multifunctional organometals for environmental and energy purposes. In particular, pioneer works have been conducted to explore their application in pollution abatement, energy conversion and storage and molecule recognition. This review summarizes recent advances of porphyrins chemistry, focusing on elucidating the nature of catalytic process. The Fenton-like redox chemistry and photo-excitability of porphyrins and their analogues are discussed, highlighting the generation of high-valent iron oxo porphyrin species. Finally, challenges in current research are identified and perspectives for future development in this area are presented.

Abstract:Porphyrins are a class of macromolecular heterocyclic compounds formed by the inter-carbon atoms of four pyrrole-like subunits through the submethyl bridge (〓CH▬). Porphyrin rings have 26 electrons in highly conjugated system and are easily modified peripheral structures, often serve as ideal building blocks to construct self-assembled nanostructures with excellent physical and chemical properties. Porphyrin nanostructures have excellent visible light absorption properties, which will significantly improve the efficiency of electron–hole separation, and are also commonly used in photocatalysis fields. Porphyrin photosensitizers have superior strong phototoxicity and little side effects, and are widely used in tumor photothermal/photodynamic treatment. This chapter summarizes the self-assembly methods of porphyrins, the applications progress of porphyrin self-assembled nanomaterials in photocatalysis and tumor therapy, and discusses the development trend in future of porphyrin nanomaterials.

Abstract:Porphyrins and their derivatives have attracted great attention due to their unique properties and diverse functionalities which contribute to their wide applications such as catalysis, solar cells, biomedicine and environmental science. It is interesting to note that porphyrin-containing polymers have recently aroused great interest due to the simultaneous presence of both porphyrinic and polymeric characteristics, especially for porphyrin-containing polymers linked by covalent bonds giving well-defined macromolecular architectures, unique self-assembly morphologies and promising applications. Herein, we summarize the different synthetic strategies and self-assembly protocols adopted in recent years to explore various applications of porphyrin-based functional polymers followed by a brief discussion on the challenges and outlooks for future research. With the discovery of advanced polymerization techniques such as living/controlled radical polymerization and click chemistry, the synthesis of porphyrin-containing functional polymers with well-defined architectures has been greatly developed. Porphyrin molecules tend to form the aggregates based on the self-assembly driving force of pi-pi stacking. Much attention has been paid to the self-assembly behavior of porphyrin-containing functional polymers, and various nanostructures have been constructed including nano-sized or micron-sized spheres, vesicles, belts, wires, rings, tubes, and rods. Porphyrin-containing functional polymers, with special photochemical and photophysical properties, present significant applications in photovoltaics, catalysis, biological and biomedicine fields. Particularly, the porphyrin-based photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy, porphyrin-conjugated polymers for solar cell devices, porphyrin-based polymeric nanocomposites in catalysis and chemical adsorption and separation have been widely studied. Abstract:Since the first synthesis of tribenzosubporphyrine in 2006, the chemistry of subporphyrins has attracted great interest. Recently, many methods have been developed to synthesize multiple-substituted subporphyrins. It is notable that the preparation of subporphyrin through the metathesis of expanded porphyrin is an effective way. Subporphyrin possesses a 14 pi conjugation system and C-3 symmetric bowl arrangement. The properties of subporphyrins such as UV-Vis spectra, fluorescence and substituent effects, are much different from those of normal porphyrins, which can be well explained by a four obital model, theoretical calculations and X-ray single crystal analysis. The subporphyrins bearing large meso-aryl groups exhibited some interesting properties including higher energy transfer efficiency, enhanced fluorescence intensity and two-photon absorption. Such modified subporphyrins have great potential applications to electronics and optics.

Abstract:The porphyrin-perylene arrays, which have rapid and efficient photo-induced energy or charge tranfer processes between porphyrin and perylene blocks, have been widely used in the fabrication of organic molecular devices, organic photovoltaic devices or as light-harvesting antenna materials for optoelectronic devices and so on. In this review, the recent progress in the synthesis and application of the porphyrin-perylene arrays is described and prospected.

Abstract:Porphyrins and phthalocyanines are structurally related macrocyclic compounds with a highly conjugated p-electron system, which exhibit strong absorptions in the visible-light region and extraordinary thermal/chemical stability. Meanwhile, their photophysical properties and electronegativity can be adjusted by changing the metal centers or peripheral substituents. Porous organic polymers (POPs), as a class of emerging porous materials, have been researched extensively and applied in various fields. Porphyrins and phthalocyanines are significant buliding blocks widely used in the construction of POPs on account of their special properties. The incorporation of porphyrin or phthalocyanine in POPs makes the polymers versatile and the application of porphyrin- and phthalocyanine-based porous materials includes catalysis, adsorption, separation, degradation, therapy, and so on. Preparation strategies, structure designs, and monomer functionalizations essentially influence the properties in a certain application. In this review, we first summarize the current preparation methods of powders, nanosheets, and films of porphyrin- and phthalocyanine-based POPs. Then, we introduce the main applications of porphyrin- and phthalocyanine-based materials, focusing on the impact of material construction methods and structural design on performances. Finally, the main challenges and prospects for the materials are further discussed based on our knowledge. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A series of (4-cyanophenyl)porphyrins have been prepared and structurally characterized by H-1 NMR, IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The relative singlet-oxygen quantum yields, two-photon absorption cross-sections and DNA photocleavage activities of these porphyrins were measured. The results show that (4-cyanophenyl)porphyrins with a properly designed hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance for better cellular uptake have potential application in two-photon-absorption photodynamic therapy.
