Historical Evolution of Children's Value in Economic and Moral Perspectives in Modern Western Societies

Abstract:Children came to be in the center of state and society in the 20th century after the concept of childhood had evolved for centuries. From the 16th to 19th century, the moral evaluation and economic estimation of children dominated the western society. The former was influenced greatly by the religious viewpoint of primitive sin, which was meant to inhibit the natural tendency of children, while the latter resulted in large-scale exploitation of child labor. However, the traditional moral and economic considerations of childhood had been questioned since the mid nineteenth century. Children were no longer considered to have any economic value, and emotional value substituted for the moral evaluation.
