Role of adult attachment and ego identity in Internet addiction

Abstract:Objective The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of adult attachment and ego identity in Internet addiction.Methods About 2 161 students from four colleges were assessed with Internet Addiction Scale for College Students,Relationship Questionnaire,Close Relationship Experience Scale,Identity Status Inventory and Social Support Rating Scale.A total of 259 students diagnosed with internet addiction were chosen as case group,and 259 students with no internet addiction matched with gender,grade,major and college were classified as control group.Results Attachment anxiety in case group(4.05 ± 0.78)was higher than control group(3.54 ± 0.90)(t = 6.99,P 0.01).The present ego commitment in case group(14.80 ± 3.25)were obviously lower than control group(17.39 ± 3.74)(t = 8.42,P 0.01).The results of multiple regression analysis indicated that four factors of attachment anxiety,present ego commitment,willingness of future ego commitment and total social support were risk factors for internet addiction.The SEM showed that attachment anxiety had direct positive effects(β = 0.35,P 0.01),and indirect effects on internet addiction through present ego commitment(β = 0.05,P 0.01).The present ego commitment had direct negative effects(β =-0.12,P 0.05) and indirect effects on internet addiction through willingness of future ego commitment and total social support(β =-0.17,P 0.01).Conclusion Adult attachment and ego identity have important influences on Internet addiction,among which self-evaluation is the most important factor.
