Abstract:Objective To analyze the correlations between early outcomes of carpal tunnel release and the results of preoperative electromyogramic examination. Methods 50 patients were divided into three groups (mild, moderate, and severe) according to electromyogramic results. The early treatment outcomes at postoperative month 3 were evaluated according to Kelly's methods. The correlations between postoperative outcome and preoperative electromyogramic results were made by Spearman's rank analysis. Results In mild group, sensory nerve conduction velocity of the median nerve increased 21.5 % and 16.3 % postoperatively from thumb and middle finger to wrist ,respectively, and 17.7 % and 21.9 % were obtained in moderate group respectively. In severe group, the latency of CMAP in the median nerve decreased 28.6 % postoperatively. There was statistically significant difference in 3 groups between preoperative and postoperative one. Spearman's rank correlation analysis was done between preoperative electromyogramic grading and postoperative early outcomes, with a negative result. Conclusions Preoperative electromyogramic results might be a predictor of early treatment outcome in carpal tunnel release.
